Without a white mage there is no party in the mid to lower levels. At higher levels other jobs subbing white mage can make decent healers such as a summoner but in the end, you still would prefer a white mage because they were design for healing and raising your dead party members. White mages are a rare job class just like their cousins, the black mages. There aren't enough of them around which makes finding a white mage to join a party hard. Those that want to become white mages need to be content of just sitting back and healing party members and curing them of any status ailments. This can be a boring job and thankless job as well so it's not for everyone. As a white mage, not only are you needed at exp parties but you're needed at almost any sort of Linkshell event gathering as well. It takes a very selfless, easygoing, helpful, and friendly person to be a white mage. People will be asking you for raises, teleports, powerleveling, and any other stuff that they need help on. If you're the kind of person that doesn't like to be bother or don't enjoy helping other people then being a white mage is not for you. Other problems that comes with being a white mage includes needing lots of money to keep your equip up to date as well as all your spells. The plus side is that everyone loves you and need you. You won't have any problems looking for parties as they will be looking for you.
There are only two types of weapons a White Mage is good at handling, staff and club. Staff is more when you're in a party and casting magic while a club is when youare out soloing and need to hit a mob.
Sub Job Combos
Whm/Blm: This is the standard combo when using white mage as a main job. Subbing black mage will give you some boost in MP and INT attributes. You alsohave some offensive magic spells and transportation spells such as warp to go along with your teleport spells. Other useful black mage spells that help round out your life saving white mage spells are escape and tractor which are very useful when it's time to save party members.
Whm/Smn: This is the second best sub job combo. Subbing summoner will give you a huge boost in MP and the very important auto refresh traits. This in turn will help your party continue the exp grind longer. However without a black mage sub, you lose out on escape, tractor, and the ability to warp yourself home. Of course those might be off set by having an actual black mage in the party. So you might want to sub summoner if you know beforehand that there's already a black mage inthe party.
Whm/Brd: There's not many benefits when subbing bard but it's not a total loss that you should over look it complete. The job traits that you can inherit is resistsilence which is good for any mages. But the idea of subbing bard is more so that you can play Mage's Ballad for some MP refresh. This might be a good alternative ifthere is no red mage or bard looking for group around. But for the most part stay away from this sub job combo.
Whm/Rdm: Don't even bother. A red mage is a half black mage and half white mage combine. If you sub a red mage, you won't get half of either jobs, youget a quarter only and that's not worth it. And there are no real bonus traits as well. The same reason as with a black mage trying to sub a red mage job.

Nice!.... um.... I'm gettin' FFXI soon, and judging by the description, I'd say the white mage job is for me! I'll look out for you guys, and possibly join your party/alliance if you want! I'm up for the whole "Standing back and doing nothing but healing, but sometimes attack" kinda thing! Well, see ya! ...... Maybe.....

You will never attack in an XP party as a WHM. By attack I mean melee. Banish series well..those are a WHM's trump card against the undead.

Well imo, it is not hard to find parties for White Mage as mentioned by others earlier. They are very much loved for Raise / Teleport etc but WHM wannabes must understand that they will not be able to solo unless they are taking on Easy Preys or lower. WHM won't be able to solo NM or coffer key mobs like some of the other jobs so that's a minus point if you want to be self-sufficient.

I was able to solo coffer key mobs just fine as a 70WHM/35BLM O_o. Stoneskin + Flash + hexa strike makes you a God. Throw in /NIN at 75 and you got a Super Mage.

Yes, I never said you won't be able to solo, just not as well as some of the other jobs. Heck, WHM probably solo better than my BRD. cry.gif Well, there are pros & cons to every job, just my 2 cents to it. haha.gif

I prefer going whm/rdm for soloing coffer keys in most areas expect velugannon/newton etc. With stoneskin/phalanx/pro5 up stoneskin will last a long time. It does kill slower than dual weld though, even with the en-spell on. I guess I like /rdm better than /nin due to the ease of casting stoneskin/phalanx once every 2 mins compared to having to watch the shadow count all the time, against tougher mobs I would use nin though. Since I had rdm and nin subs, I never really tried soloing with /blm. I can solo den of rancor coffer key mobs that are DC, but a lot more time is spent casting stoneskin so it's not efficient.

Once a whm gets hexa at lvl 67 they can solo ordinary coffer keys with /rdm. And at 74 solo with /nin is quite easy.

Btw, by 60rdm/nin can also solo some coffer key mobs like robber crabs in boyahda, just to prove how ridiculously powerful they are XD

the white mage class has gotta be one of the best class's in final fantasy but i always hated how if you dont have a white mage in your party everyone leaves in like one second

It's a good class but didn't fit so well with my Elvaan. Or wait, was it when I made him into a black mage? It was quite some time ago so I don't remember too clearly. Elvaan can be good WHM's, a little more beefed up than the Taru's but not quite as good as them. At least they can survive a little better with slightly more defense and HP. Of course you can say the same for the Galka but...Galka WHM? Oh dear.

Elvaan make good WHM's, due to their high mind. It allows them to invest in mostly MP gear, where as a tarutaru could focus on MND. Most Galka who try out WHM are well prepared and make up for their low MP with great skill and good gear. As the TP burn trend grows to it's year mark, WHM's find it a little more difficult to get parties, but alas we remain the best healers. biggrin.gif

I could come up with an equipment guide, but only if enough people here were playing FFXI.

I have myself a goal to solo almost everything Avesta's RDM/NIN did when I get a fully-hasted WHM/NIN setup going. (Except Hakutaku and Fenrir.)

With that said, WHM is the best healer but can actually DD better than a RDM/NIN with Hexa Strike, Dual Wield Clubs, and Haste+% gear. This has to do with RDM being shafted, I'll agree on that. But at the same time, an awesome RDM can heal just as good as a WHM and enfeeble/support at the same time-I know cause that was my ex-girlfriend.

Just to show you my WHM...

You may ask yourself why I do not simply respond to threads after I've posted my view in. My reasoning is very logical, I have learned if I have to post my view more than once in said thread without any new points from any rival view it is thus over-redudant and a waste of MY time. I simply refuse to fall into any traps.
