Why Yaoi is so Popular? Help me out here.

Yuri, not popular? I don't think that's true. But as for yaoi; girls (and some guys too *cough*) apparently like seeing their favorite bishies make out and... stuff. I'm not sure who I asked, but when I asked why they like seeing those bishies do so, and if they didn't rather prefer them to be straight (for their sake, you know? xP ), I got answered: "Because then we get double fun, 2 bishies making out is hotter than one". I think I asked Seluna, not sure anymore.
But I think Yuri is equally popular, though it's true I see yaoi mentioned a lot more on this forum. Me...? I wouldn't dare. =P

Despite being for gay rights, the whole Homosexual anime thing is going straigth over my head.
What i'm really confused about.....why are you looking at a cartoon for this in the first place? Ink+Paper=Erection? Where did that come from?

How bout real girls and not Ink and Paper?
I'm starting to question everyone's sanity here. Science damn I feel like that one guy at the party who always sits off to the side, doesn't know anybody, doesn't know where to go....just sits there and drinks something for three hours and leaves.

You'll find that most pixelated characters (not just anime, game characters too) are designed to match the definition of beauty. You won't find any real person who looks as flawlessly stunning as a lot of anime and gaming characters. I'd imagine that's why "ink and paper" and not real people. ;p

Besides bad spanish, I have to think that Yaoi is a lot more popular than Yuri as well, or at least from what I've seen on the masses at DeviantArt/LiveJournal/Forums etc. And in all honesty I dunno either. :O I personally would get the most kick out of ME being in the spot of the kissed/held/caressed/hugged rather than an animated/drawn character. ;-; (And jealous if it's a real person, wahh.) So yeah, it all flies over my head, but if I were to go by observations, I'd say Yaoi is more popular because it's less cliche and skanky to see two unrealistically beautiful boys make out than two unrealistically beautiful girls?

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree.
Anime/game characters may look good and all that, but putting them above the real thing is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who says otherwise is in serious need of getting laid.

Well, anime and game characters are often designed to be perfect. Their skin is flawless, the real thing will never be that "perfect". But I agree the real thing is better (besides, perfection does not exist). But for me there's a world of difference between yaoi and gay porn. It crosses my moral line to watch erotica with real people in it. On the other hand; pixelated, fictional characters are not real and I don't mind watching that... lots of that. xP

So to better understand this, it's your (and possibly others) way of watching porn without crossing your moral boundries? I guess that makes some small shred of sense. But I could still honestly argue the point on appearance differences. I've seen quite a few flawless looking models, both nude and non. Some even go through quite the amount of cosmetic surgery to make themselves as such. And still yet while you may say animated characters are "flawless", I could also say they're simply lacking detail or realism. Now if there were any realistic GC yuri/yaoi (matching FF7 AC in quality, for example), I'd be a bit more willing to concede a bit on the matter. But otherwise most of it is, for the most part, more simple than it is "flawless" if you'd ask me. But perhaps they're one in the same for you. To each his own I s'pose.

Xerno, you asked me that question. ^^;; And I remember because that was and still is my answer. It's like how some (if not most) guys like watching lesbian action, me thinks. It's the attraction of the opposite sex multiply by two. Especially since I'm a bishonen fan first. XD Why not have two bishonen than tolerate some female I don't particularly like? (I do like some female characters but some are just.... urghhh *do the straggling neck motion*)
That's just my reason of liking yaoi. I won't say that all yaoi fans think like me, but I know a few that thinks similarly. As for why it's so popular... well... maybe the most original definition can answer the question:
As for yuri... it is not popular in comparison to yaoi? o.o Maybe because yaoi fans are more outspoken? Or perhaps because yuri is so... 'normal' in the hentai scene that guys don't make a big fuss out of it, unlike yaoi which has to be classified aside specifically. I don't really know, since I'm not an expert of hentai. You gotta ask somebody else that.
And uh about the question of why hentai and not porn... well... to me, porn feels like one hell lot of playacting and/or repetitious actions, despite varieties. I haven't exactly seen gay porn but I can't bring myself to see it. Maybe it does have something to do with hentai being not real and not having as much flaws than the real deal. And in hentai, anything goes, even the strangest fetishes (like tentacles >.>). And nobody gets hurt or look fake like hell since... it's just pencil + paper, or pixels, moving or not.
I prefer my entertainment written, anyway.

Technically, the term "Yaoi" is an acronym for the Japanese words, "Yama-nashi, owari-nashi, ima-nashi" ("No peak, no point, no meaning", when translated in English). It was used in reference to the works of artists and writers that portrayed beautiful men or boys having a relationship. Intended for the enjoyment of female consumers, most of the characters of these works came from various popular anime series and possess a striking aesthetic beauty so celebrated that probably no male alive on earth could ever compare to it. At present, "Yaoi" is also used to refer to fan works that were produced mainly for the enjoyment of fellow fans. Fanfiction, fan arts and fanfiction archives are very common examples of such.

It's even worstat conventions. Girls come in with paddles with YAOI written all oer it, and some of them expect some of us guys cosplaying to make out with each other. *shudders at bad memory* Wow, was I harassed that day. Well to why YAOI is so popular? Hel if I know, it just is, apparently two males making out is more popular to women than two women making out.

Thanks to Chal for the set
