The Girls of Dead or Alive
And Why They Kick So Much Rear

Sure, the girls in the game are sometimes skimpily clad. And sure, you can adjust their “bounciness” by setting your age in the options menu. But the fact still remains that the girls of Tecmo’s Dead or Alive series kick serious rear.

First we have Kasumi, the ex-shinobi. That just rocks in itself, as it shows courage and independence to renounce such ties. She is fast, her hits are of decent strength and doing cartwheels lets people like me, who can not block a hit to save my life, avoid getting thrown or beaten to a K.O. And her outfits are cute – wow, wasn’t that shallow? Seriously, though, if only she could use that tanto in battle. Maybe they’ll make a DoA 7: Melee.

Helena sort of bothers me. I guess it’s mainly because she’s a little clunkier than, and thereby slower than, Kasumi or Ayane. Often times her outfits are more tasteful and show less skin, so that is nice. And her hits are hard, thereby making her a decent contender when fighting a male character. The “windmill” looking attack is also quite effective.

Next is Tina Armstrong. I really dislike this character. Though she hits hard, she seems slower than most of the cast. Her little wrestling costumes are an annoyance, though I do suppose that fighting in a (for all intents and purposes) bikini does take away any chance of someone grabbing you by the clothing and throwing you to the floor. Maybe Ms. Armstrong has it right? But daddy sure doesn’t agree ...

“I mastered Kung Fu to live in your world.” Wow. Lei Fang is by far my favorite character, the one I always pick and the one I played my first time, ever. She is cute, sassy, well-dressed and a T’ai Chi Quan queen! My favorite move of hers is her “No, No, No” appeal in Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore. Really, I want to be her when I grow up. (Or at least when I go to No Brand Con and cosplay.) I think she is stronger than most give her credit for. Not necessarily physically, but she has a wicked independent streak and I think that, upon meeting her, we’d throw all the boys into the volcano. And all the girls who’d oppose us. I still can’t figure out how to avoid Jann Lee’s “blind elbow” attack when playing her, though. That really smarts.

Ayane-chan, the purple haired shinobi, is fast. I mean really, really fast. I hardly play her, as she moves too quickly for me to keep track of half the time. Her storyline is intriguing, shunning the traditional “revenge” plot (as is Helena’s) and the “bitterness and retaliation” plot (Lei Fang). Her moves are fairly easily executed, once you get them down – and made for rapid succession. Perhaps the only fair way to play her is against herself or Kasumi.

The girls of Dead or Alive are attractive, intelligent (for AI girls, at least) and powerful. The story modes help their personalities come to life – surprisingly well for a fighter. And, despite all the hentai doujinshi floating about with the girls’ faces (ahem) plastered on their pages, I doubt we’ll ever actually see one of the girls legitimately in such compromising situations.

I was reading the latest issue of Game Informer and stumbled across the top 50 greatest games listing. Seems that “...Tomonobu Itagaki [series creator] considers the DOA girls his children and would never allow them to be seen naked. Just very, very close to naked.” On that (perhaps rather disappointing) note (to some), I bid you adieu!

I always thought the chicks of DoA were just there for eye candy, and were poorly developed. They're not very original, and most of them have zero personality.

However, that can be said about all the characters in the DoA universe. I suppose the only reason I like the game is because the chicks bounce when you move around, that's definitely a badass thing to have in a video game.

They need to work on character design, and originality. There hasn't been an original fighting game chick since Morrigan.

You forget about the greatest videogame fighting chick ever.... Chun Li

To me, DoA is just another fighting game, not much originality to the characters in it. Most of them are just ripped offs from other fighting games, or they're just normal and boring. I used to like the game, but it got pretty boring after a while.

You also forgot Felicia.. Meow!
jenni-girl
all I have to say is that their boobs are soo outta proportion nobody can stand upright with jugs like that yuk.gif

True... Just about any of the Darkstalkers girls scream originality.

Also I forgot to mention a favorite of mine, Sakura. She's the ultra spazzy butt-kickin' school girl that I love so dearly. Nothing is more satisfying than beating an MvC2 pro at the arcades with a spazzy femme.

The DoA chicks are pretty wicked...and I don't necessarily mean just their looks. I mean, ok...so Capcom haven't designed a "good" 3D version of Chun-Li, Sakura, Morrigan, Felicia...you get the story. Until they do, Its not really fair to compare them to the DoA characters.
Maybe its just me, but a 3D fighter tends to look more visually appealing than a 2D fighter. I mean, I own SF 2, SFA 1, SFA 2, SFA 3, MVC 2, and DoA 2.
When you get right down to it, 3D chicks do look better than 2D.
So they are a little out of proportion. It is a GAME!! You will not walk down the street and suddenly bump into a Kasumi or a Chun-Li, or even a Sakura. They are SUPPOSED to be out of proportion.
Maybe the storyline is a bit shotty in DoA 2, and the characters aren't as developed relative to Chun Li, or Morrigan. Its still only in DoA 2...there is plenty of time for the characters to develop and become more a character.

Personally i could care less about the characters, development or what they look like, the only thing important to me when i start playing a fighting game is... Which character can i use to kick the crap out of my opponent.

They're really bland buddy... Wow, Ayane is just Kasumi but with a different color pallet... HOW FANTASTIC.

Who cares if they haven't been designed in 3D? What does that have to do with originality as far as backstory, character, and general plot for the character?

I do agree. While it is nice to have story/graphics/costumes/strong characters, the ultimate question is the same: Does it matter in a fighting game?

I think it depends upon who is playing it. Some people obviously prefer fighting games and fully expect JUST that: fighting. Some people are not huge fans of most fighting games (me), and would play it IF it offered a little more. I think that DoA does this.

And I am a sucker for good costumes. Plain and simple, men and women - if I were a man I would dress as Jann Lee every day. As a woman - well, I don't think the world wants me to walk around dresses as Lei Fang in my daily life. tongue.gif

Ill agree with FaErY saying that DOA does add a bit more than what some fighting games offer. For instance DOA attemps to put a decent story with the characters. For some reason some fighting games havent added much of a story, or the story they added wasnt done very good. An example of that is Bloody Roar 3, in terms of fighting games its decent, but i felt the stories that went along the characters sucked, and i do understand its hard to integrate stories and character development in fighting games, but they could make a better effort to attract those who are looking for a more indepth fighting game. I made the statement about not caring about stories or characters because frankly i have given up on the hopes of a in depth fighting games. I cant say this is based on any facts because i havent played every fighting game out there, this is just IMO.

ah...this thread reminds me of a silly YM article I once read ( Keep in mind that I don't read this magazine unless I want a GOOD laugh) where the editors were complaining about large-chested vidoe games characters. They stuck a pic of Ayane from DOA:EBV on there and didn't label her name...just something about "this one from Dead or Alive Extreme Beach blablabla as if they were too azy to look up the names. They bashed Lara Croft too lol. Not that they had anything to back themselves up with but hey, that's what everyone gets with empty calorie magazines that don't know what they're talking about.

Personally, I think that what VG Charas look like doesn't matter. Yes, I know, I am a girl and am entitled to caring about the "jiggling" on female charas but it's stupid. Why bother? Just play the game.
Maximillian Jenius
To me Dead or Alive is just another fighting game. I don't really like this game. The only aspect that attracts me to play this game is those bouncing babes. I prefer Soul Calibur series to DOA series.

the one bad thing about the game is the story line is weak. but the game play makes up for it

Yeah, but the same could be said for any fighter in that respect. When I say the characters are weakly developed, I mean it didn't take much originality to design them and sorta give them their own " personality " If you know what I mean.

DoA I played it once..Didn't really See that much Bouncing. Of course I played with someone named Hayabusa the whole Time. I haven;t gfot used to it So I can't really Say whether it's Just another one. But From what I'm Hearing. Ms. Millia-Rage is still on Top for Girls.

Perhaps a sequel editorial is due. Don't worry, TED, j/k.

If I forgot your fave, post up why she rocks! It's discussion, after all!

Sexy girls fighting each others.

I like the game partly because the chars (well, most of them, at least) looks great, but mostly because of the fighting. I like the story fine, their character development alright and doesn't care if they are out of proportion (okay, except during the ending of a battle for Ayane or Kasumi, i shudder a bit sometimes) or fares less when compared to other fighting games.

I don't choose Ayane because she has err... bigger upper part or because she has a well developed storyline, I choose her because her attacks rocks and is dead efficient in taking care of some of the chars I hate with a big passion.

All these are my own opinion and I'm posting here as a reason of why I like DOA.

This game gets really old after awhile... but I'm pissed..

I had two fifths of vodka at a party, and my XBox was there, with DoA 3. Well anyhow the party was dull so I started playing this game. Tag team survival... the drunker I got, the higher score I got, and to this day I am unable to beat that score... ugh tongue.gif

Anyhow

whoever mentioned Hitomi.. *nods* she rocks.

As far as story, the character witht he most backround is Ryu Hayabusa, the super ninja, and the winner of the first two tournaments. All in all the game is ok I suppose... not the best.

when you say DOA girls you may aswell say "bouncing breasts" (not that i dont like it) these girls know how to rock i think that the game is alright but i think there are better fighting games as far as the girls go we know everyone loves them because they bought out a game souly to do with the girls wearing skimpy outfits (DOA extreme beach volleyball) that was good and i liked some of the camera shots but as far as the game goes its alright i bought it once and after a while sold it and i think once is enough.

I dont know i think she is the best too.

Man, Helena rocks I can do a 12-hit combo with her I'm sure everyone knows that and Jan Lee is cool, but that would be off topic since it is on the DOA Girls.

Uhhh...Paul shouldn't you at least delete one of those two posts you have? ^^;;; Just reminding you about something...

Mweh I don't know about you people..but I'm always for Kasumi...lets say since the first time I encountered DoA. ^^ Yeah she just floats my boat.XD
guardian84
Kasumi! I have a thing for scantily clad kunoichis. ^^;; That's not my fetish, thank you. Ayane looks cool as well.

And how on earth did this topic get digged up? Heh.

I can pull off a 15 hit with Kasumi.

ph33r the speediness of the scantily-clad ninja. =p
AnimePaul
I never heard of anyone who can go past 12 hit combo maybe because I have DOA: Hardcore for PS2 and you must have DOA3 for the X-Box with the extra moves.
Servant Saber
Actually, I did do it on DoA 2.

My record on Do3 is 19. And boy, did that ever take me a while to plan out! x_x

I think the best combo I did was a 10 hit combo with Ayane. I can't keep up afterwards ^^;;;

15 hit combo? 19 hit combo? A 15 hit combo is believeable, but a 19 hit combo I have not seen before. Who you use? and how you do it? I assume that it took over half of the opponents health. blink.gif

I used Kasumi in DoA 3. I studied the guide book and her move list and basically used trial and error to chain as many moves together as possible. Then I wrote down successful combinations for later use. It is very difficult to pull them off against human opponents, but the lower difficulty AI are easily pummeled.

And about the damage....it depends. I've KILLED by knocking them into walls and through barriers, but other times, a 13 or 14 hit combo only takes off half.

On the other hand, my brother, who can pull off a 10 hit combo ending with an aerial throw, is an instant KO no matter what the circumstances are.
AnimePaul
A ten hit KO! Who he use Kasumi and its hard doing combos on Bass or Leon because they are so damn heavy and don't stay in the air as long either.
Servant Saber
Actually, Bass is the character he uses for that. If you master Bass' aerial throw, you can slap it onto practically any move that throws the opponent into the air.
AnimePaul
Those Aerial throws are in DOA3 and not in DOA2 since I only got a PS2. I hope for DOA4 that Itagaki makes it for all consoles. nocomment.gif
Servant Saber
I somehow doubt DoA 4 will be on the PS2.
They will, after DoA 3's performance graphic and gameplay-wise, probably stick with the box.
AnimePaul
DOA4 is going to be made for next generation consoles so if there isn't much difference in graphics between them I hope Itakagi will make it for all the consoles.
Servant Saber
Uhh...there's a massive difference between the processing power of an Xbox and a PS2...

And the Xbox has much more of it.
AnimePaul
I said next generation consoles meaning the PS3 and X-box 2.
Servant Saber
Again, the Xbox 2 is most likely going to be beating the living crap out of the PS3 just like the predecessors.
AnimePaul
QUOTE

Not necessiarly because if you remember the PS2 came out like a year early then any other consoles and the other consoles got extra time to improve. I think they will be even. Sony isn't going to drop the ball this time on the graphics parts of it they will be trying hard to beat he X-Box.

the next doa IS scheduled to be first released on PS2.
And who cares which system is 'better' i care more about the games rather than bloody graphics.
I judge the games not the systems that run them. A good game takes advantage of what the system it uses can do.

my personaly favorite has and always will be brad wong, his drunken appearance often causes his enemies to under estimate him (and me) but i win about 99% of the time with him and have gotten to 158 with him on survival mode.

he looks like a weak simple character, but he actually has the widest variety of moves in the game (20 more combos than any otehr character) he has fast weak attacks, and slow powerfull ones, he has it all

I'm sorry to say this but this game is only for guys who can't get lade. (did I spell that right???)
AnimePaul
What makes you think that all guys buy this game just for the female fighters in here and there are girls who play this game too dry.gif . DOA is a great game because of the environments and the variety of characters, but since its a 3-D fighter there are those who will button mash to victory pissed.gif .
