You'll have a much easier time soloing mobs and leveling up on your own whilelearning the roles of FFXI then most beginning jobs. In terms of invites it's fairly even as most low level parties always need a good pure damage dealer. Once you hitlevel 30, you will have a big decision to make on whether or not to continue to use monk as your main DD job or go with one of the higher advance DD job. If youcontinue to play monk at the higher levels, understand and be aware that your invites will start to become very slow. With so many different DD jobs available at higherlevels, a monk place in a party can be lost amongst all the other DD jobs. This isn't to say that monks aren't good DD, just that they shine more at the lower levels thanat the higher levels. One thing that monks are special for and specialize in, is killing undead skeletons. Some of the higher missions and artifact quests require the killingof skeletons, and this is where a monk can shine.
Weapon of choice? There's no other weapon available but Hand to Hand type of weapons. Don't bother with anything else.
Sub Job Combos
Mnk/War: This is probably the most and only logical choice in terms of job combo available for monk. With a warrior as a sub job, you get a boost inHP and strength. Add in the berserk ability and double attack trait from warrior and you can increase your ability to do more damage. A monk can also make a goodback up voker when subbing warrior too.
Mnk/Thf: Most other sub job combos including using thief is a distant second. You get a boost in evasion and agility but those aren't what a monk really need. The benefits in terms of damage is using Sneak Attack and Trick Attack from a thief as a sub. Your Weapon Skill will do a bit more damage but in terms of abilities and traits with a thief, there's not much there. Subbing thief is a good combo for farming though.

Ah, yes the lovely monk. After 30, there are no invites, so try to find a static or go solo for awhile. I hardly ever see a monk past 30, because alot of people decide to change to something else once they hit 30, as i did. (<3 ranger) But i can not say its not fun, being a monk can be a very enjoyable job. Just a couple words of caution:
Monks do not make good pullers, please dont do it unless absolutely necessary. Monks do not make good tanks, they are not tanks! It can work if there are two monks though, every 30 seconds one monk has to voke off of the other constantly... but it is not ideal. And those are the problems i mostly had while playing as a monk. Good luck!
EDIT: Holy hell this is old! Monk 75 now and love it, pts aren't a problem, Only Warriors with Ridills can compare to our dmg. Tanking, soloing - i love it all and it is all very very possible.

I really think the monk is an underrated job. Of course there are better attackers for brute strength but they put out good damage very quickly, even more so at higher levels, certainly above thirty. They have a long ranged attack which can do some nice damage as well as their other attacking abilities. You could say they are the emergency puller/tank. Even calling a monk a tank sounds very strange though. Needless to say, they are great damage dealers who don't stick out all that much. I must say for a newbie, if they can get a group, its the easiest job. Just click for attack and watch. Not really any special pulling or abilities to use every few seconds. You should have no need to use provoke and there aren't many useful other abilities to use. All in all the Monk is my favorite class who definitely fits in as a great support attacker.

My MNK will forever be level 1!!
This job is ok, but it's kind uninteresting to me.
