A bard function in a party is to be a main supporter. You are basically standing back and play songs to either help boost your party members attributes and fighting effectiveness or you are weaking a mob defenses stats or attack stats so your party would have an easiertime to kill it. Since the job is basically standing back and playing songs, it's not the kind of jobs that appeal to a lot of gamers as people want to be in the heat of battle. This is why there are very few bards around in the lower levels to nonexistence in the higher levels. Invites might not be great at the lower levels since a bard has yetto be able to acquire all their songs but post level 50, a bard is extremely valueable to a party. Post level 50, mobs have higher HP, stronger defense, and stronger attacks. This in turns mean that it takes longer to kill a mob. A bard truely shine in this situation because a bard can help buff up your parties attacks and accuracy, give MPrefresh to all your mages, debuff a mob strength and attacks, and even knock down any mob defensive spells that they cast on themselves. Having a bard in a party means you can kill faster and party longer. Unfortunately finding a bard at the higher level is very difficult. Especially one that is looking for a group. You best friend isanon so people don't know what kind of job you are or else you will be pester non stop for joining someone's party.
Your main weapon of choice are musical instruments. Can't play any songs without them. However for those that are soloing or what to do a bit of melee in a party, dagger is the ideal second choice of weapon for Bards due to their Rank B proficiency.
Sub Job Combos
Brd/Whm: This is probably the only real choice in terms of job combo for a bard. Since a bard function in a party is to be a main supporter, subbingany damage dealer jobs is quite pointless since you won't be able to do any real damage due to a bard weak strenght and attack power. And a bard isn't really a mage so they have no real MP pool to be too useful as a nuker. And with their weak INT, their black magic spells won't do much damage at all. Not to mention that all the elemental spells would only be half of what it's true strenght would be due to black mage as a sub and not as a main. However since a bard is a support job, with whatever small MP pool they have, they can provide some back up healing to party members as well as some back up status ailment curing before their MP pool run out. Which is why white mage is an ideal sub job for bards.
Brd/Thf: The only time you want to sub thief is when you are out farming. Plain and simple.
Bard Job Quest
Locatioin: Lower Jueno
Client: Mertaire
Reward: Able to be a Bard
Requirements: A level 30 job on hand.
Items Needed: Parchment
Change to a level 30 job and head to Merry Minstrel Meadhouse in Lower Jueno and talk to Mertaire. Once you done getting a cut scene from him, talk to the bartender, Bki Tbujhja to learn about Song of Runes. Once that's done, buy a parchment at the auction house under Materials---->Leathercrafting. With parchment on hand, head out to Buburimu Peninsula. At G-9 of Buburimu Peninsula you will find a ???, examine it to get a cutscene. After the cutscene, examine it again and the ??? willask for a parchment. Trade your parchment to the ???. After this head back to Lower Jueno and talk to Mertaire again to finish the first half of the quest.
After talking to Mertaire again, head out to Valkurm Dunes at the secret beach in the northwest corner of the Dunes. At the secret beach you should find a ??? that says Song Runes. Examine the Song Rune to get the final cut scene. Afterward you will be awarded the Bard job and some small amount of gil.

I agree with RPG's post that BRD is one of the few jobs that in high demand~ tongue.gif
The job requires a good number of macros, including switching of instruments / equipment to maximise the effect of the buff or debuff. It's cheaper compared to the other jobs but there's the downside to it too. Yes, it can be a rewarding and challenging job but it is not meant for soloing, well serious soloing. dry.gif
For the record, I have no problems killing robber crab with "Melee > Cure > Lullaby > Cure > Ballad > Repeat steps 1-5..." in 10+ mins maybe 20 while skilling up for G5, one by one of course. yuk.gif
