1. The story became repetitive.....
A lot of you out there never played 1 and 2, some of you probably would think it sucks. You're way off base, 1 and 2 were the building blocks that relied on a story and not flashy graphics to win the gamer over.
2. They've changed the BoF crew too many times.
BoF 1 and 2 had a crew that worked well together and had everything in the game complimenting eachother. BoF 1 had story issues some called it "Boring at times" so when 2 came out they made sure to spice it up. I've played most of the BoF's on the consols like Ps PS2 and the like....they are boring....only the mini games like fishing and stuff were anywhere near good.....
The only way they'd keep a good rep would be by redoing the original 2 BoF.....
But that's not gonna happen....

I must have missed the part where the Breath of Fire series *ever* tried to use "Flashy graphics." In all 5 games, I don't ever remember seeing that happen.

I agree with Bomb, none of the more recent BoFs were about flashy graphics. Only "Dragon Quarter" even came remotely close to that, and I still wouldn't count that. Dragon Quarter was a disappointment to me because of it's 'world', characters, and it's survival RPG style.
And BoF3 was quite good in my opinion--probably better than BoF1.

Depends. Imma be a tad bit biased and say I agree with you.
But then again, I don't. Breath of Fire 5 was one of the best Breath of Fire games released. Now, BoF3 and 4 is a different story altogether. I didn't like them.
Changes for the Breath of Fire series is best you know. The new thing they did with BoF5 was amazin' in my opinion. I loved it. The series wasn't really big on grapics. Even when it was moved to the Sony console. Playstation. Capcom could've did more, but didn't. Which makes me wonder. Haha.

I've played both 1 and 2, on emulator. I liked them both although I have to admit, it became annoying trying to figure out where to go some times. But hay, that just gave me more exp so It all balenced out in the end. They all did have good stories but they didn't suffere from anything more than any other rpg of their day suffered from (poor directions, translations) but both kicked butt. 3 was pretty good too although the endings were morbid but that was a nice twist from your "happy ending" type games so I liked it for originality. 4...well...while 4 looked good, i liked the anime look to it, 4 fell short in a good amount of key areas. and dragon quarter...i refuse to commit on that for the fact that i'd start cussing to much.

The only BoF that I didn't like would be BoF V unfortunately, because I am seriously not use to the new battle system which really turned me off. However I think BoF III and BoF IV are relatively good, I mean they have good storylines and although they are not related to BoF and BoFII. As for the crew part, they keep maintaining Ryu and Nina, they keep changing their kind of roles as wel? I don't think that's a problem and for the rest of the characters, the most memorable ones would be from BoFII, but we can't help it if they change the timeline =/

Startlingly Relevant Editorials! Here's one about how the often-neglected fact that the first 3 are a coherant trilogy:
QUOTE
Editor's Comments:This is to all those people out there who still don't get it. The history of the breath of fire trilogy from beginning to end, covering how each game fits together with minimal interpretation.

Today, I'd like to address a generally misunderstood notion about the early trilogy in the Breath of Fire series; that being that the first three games are a cohesive trilogy following a single continuity. It is an issue that, to this day, I've never quite understood how it became so misunderstood. Granted, it did suffer from terrible translation problems, but the amount of confusion underlying these games seems excessive even considering translation. With that in mind, I shall be stating pretty strong views on the nature of the games, their story, and how they work together.
And a separate one:

Editor's Comments:A tribute to one of the lesser appreciated actors upon the stage of Breath of Fire.
Anyway, yeah, that link should add a new dimension to this discussion here...

I don't remember the BoF series getting crappy. BoF 3 and 4 are amazing games that have a home in my game collection forever. BoF DQ is slightly more subjective i happily will admit, but theres no arguing that its very innovative. 4 in particular is one of my favourite rpgs of all time on any format.

Flashy graphics? Did you even play 3, 4 or 5? Those games didn't have flashy graphics as every member state so far. If you're complain about the improve graphics, well games' graphics tend to improve over time, you know?

If you believe the story is repetitive, then that's your problem. THat also from your point of view. You're the first person to ever call the Breath of Fire 3, 4 and 5 plot repetitive. I never knew 5 plot so similar to the previous 4 games.

Crew? Breath of Fire 5 only had 3 characters through the entire game, 4 playable if you count Bosch, so I'm not sure what you're refer to. Also, most of us never looked at any Breath of Fire game really being connected, even though review Bomb posted does make a good arguement about 1, 2 and 3 being connected. Still, I never viewed any of the games being connected.
You don't provide that many good reasons why 3, 4 and 5 sucked. Consider 3 was probably the most popular Breath of Fire title out there, you must not know what you're really talking about when it come to reputation. If anything, they should redo Breath of Fire 3 to keep a good reputation since most fans loved 3.

I just want to say, in regards to what Eva said at the end of the post-- We ARE working (or at least thinking of ideas) on 'creatin a sequel to BoF3' because of that very reason, being it so popular.
Look for the 'creating a sequel -BoF3' post (started by Yuuki-2006) and go from there!
By the way, I too disagree. There aren't really any flashy animations in particular and (though i wouldn't know to be honest) I doubt if the stories are repetitive.

Umm... I think Bof3 is remarkably brilliant and it hints at the firsdt 2 nicely. I'm even currently working on a Breath of Fire remake, titled "Breath of Fire - Resurrection" with completely originally redone animations, sprites, spiced up characters, dialogue and plot, music and graphics. The post is somewhere around here, and I'm in the process of uploading a short demonstration of the game.

I own and have played all of them and I think that all the stories are excelent and although they may not have "flashy graphics", who cares. Thats a very small part of why I choose the games I play. Anybody who needs flashy cut scenes to play a game wouldn't make it in the NES / Genesis days.

notice that capcom took over for BoF 3???
before then square had the series. i was good with square, and since capcom took over it has become increasingly bad with time ( 4 was the best and the worst)
what they need to do:
1) make the game less japanese. it needs to go back to its european dragon look.
2) bring bak the fishing game
3) bring back the master system.
4) make the game considerably longer than 5
5) go back to the 4 style of mmagic combination.
6) NEVER, EVER, again make the entire game underground and depressing.
summery:
make the game less like 5, more like 1,2 and 4, + some aspects of 5.

I agree whole-heartedly. I really enjoyed all of the BoFs up until 5; Dragon Quarter was an innovative game, and had it not been for the fact that the idea behind the Dragon Form was completely wrong, I probably would have liked it. The only thing that really made me dislike the game is having to use tokens to use Save Points, the inherint lack of money, and that you couldn't use your Dragon Form, unless you liked dying.
Besides Dragon Quarter, I actually liked the other four, though BoF 2 suffered from terrible translations in the beginning! (I mean, sometimes it didn't make any sense, or sometimes it was so simple, a toddler could have understood it....)

Well, if you mean repetative by... Group of Heroes goes out and saves the world with Ryu, Nina, and the rest of the characters supporting them... Then I could say... All RPGs are repetative >.>
What is most important to remember is the story of the game. They've created their own lore, and through playing the game you come to understand the story. Sure, BoF 5 was a little different, but it's continuing on with the saga. Noticing with BoF 4 and 5 they seemed to have given up on making various types of dragons and just 1 dragon form x.x;

BoF1 and 4 were my favourite of the games.

I've played BoF1 through to the end 29 times to date. It's awesome.
