Ok, i'm sick of hearing people complain about X-2. well, I haven't seen it on this board for a while but on other boards and IRL, i'm sick of people complainging about the game. I liked it personally. Granted it wasn't the best FF by any means but still, why do so many people hate it?

If you ask me, most of the people who hate it (or so I've noticed) are guys. I'm a guy and I liked it just fine. I personally think it has such bad reviews from guys is because none of the girls running around had double D chests and weren't acting slutty. They were respectable, although gooffy, young girls fighting for fun and love.

Also, a big grip I've heard was the Dress Sphere system. Lots of people complained that it was too "girly". PLEASE, it was the job system just redo with a more feminin flare. Personally, I liked it a bit more than the old Job system wehre you had to put all your hopes on having one job selected for a battle but you might have screwed up by having the wrong job selected. With the Dress Sphere system, you can change on the fly giving you a lot of freedom in battle. Gotta love it.

Now...I don't think X-2 should have been stated as a sequal. It placed WAY to much pressure on the game but I do believe that if it had been stated as a side story or spin-off, that it would have been graded a lot less harshly.

I know this thread is just personal ranting and if theres a thread like this already, I appologize but I just want to see some intellegent reasons for peoples hatred of the game.

Thanks folks.
Finch
My complaint. It was plain and simple stupid, The story had no need to be told.. They could have just finished it with Tidus coming back in FFX rather then making a silly game about girl power with a bland story even more then the first.

Obviously if Yuna is the main characters its a sequal no matter if its called it or not containing the character then would make it a Spin off if it had a different game which people frown upon even more.

Me personally, I'd much rather a new Original game with new characters and new story with the job system they used. Honestly I loved the speed of the game but the % complete was also stupid.. You had to play through twice to get the full ending? Because of the choice you had to make?

My opinion is probably Biased because the only character in FFX I did like was Auron.. The rest such as Rikku, Tidus, Yuna.. I simply hated.

Another thing I did hate the girly tone of the game.. They really had many too revealing outfits to draw people in.. Or else thats the way it seems.. But the whole Girl power and save the world.. Yuna went from a quiet summoner to a gunslinger girl with an attitude.. with her cousin who looks like a tramp and her emotionaly disturbed friend paine..

I hope I explained my hate for this game good enough =P
maxxumas
actually, you gave some pretty good explanations. Thanks. Least I'm getting a good start with the explanations.
Yuna went from a quiet summoner to a gunslinger girl with an attitude..

I agree that Yuna's transformation was a bit extreme. Sure, Tidus helped bring out her more reckless side, but looking at the new Charlie's Angels Yuna from X-2, one would think that the summoner Yuna from FFX never existed. Not to mention that her maturity level actually decreased between X and X-2, which makes no sense whatsoever. I really liked Paine; not only did she kick ass, but she was by far the most down-to-earth of the Yuna-Rikku-Paine trio. Hearing her tell spastic little Rikku to shut the hell up was music to my ears.

Somebody tell me how to use this stupid quote thing...I'm worthless.

I would have enjoyed the job system in a new game.. I always thought that if they made an FFX sequal or something it would be about Ject's Journey rather then Yuna's.. I did enjoy the fast paced game.. But it really tried to be something it wasn't, And that was a sequal with a point.

You have to put
at the end of the sentance your trying to quote.

I'm one of those who liked FFX-2. Personally I believe a lot of the negative comments it gets is greatly influenced by hearing other peoples rants on it, that they don't bother to play through the game themselves to form an opinion. Then of course, there are a lot of people who played it and still didn't like it.

I really liked it though. Being able to come back to Spira and see what things had changed, and what things stayed the same these past 2 years was interesting, because I did like the original Spira in FFX, and it's characters. Seeing Kilika port rebuilt, and meeting old familiar faces again. I also liked the story, even though it wasn't as deep as the one in FFX. Yuna's concert was one of the best parts.
The "girlpower" thing, I felt ended rather quickly after the first few missions. Sure, they made some high fives here and there, but it was nothing like the initial Charlies Angels posing they started off with. It became a bit more serious.
The Mission layout was also somthing I liked. The first non-linear Final Fantasy game. You could do most of them in any order you wanted. And mltiple endings is something I wish was available in most rpgs. Halfway through the game you could also chose which faction to follow, and that changed the story on certain parts.

The battle system was one of the things I like the most though. Very fast paced and very variable compared to FFX. Building up all the dress spheres to learn all the different skills was fun to do. I liked it more than the sphere grid system, since you didn't have to waste time building stats. You had equipments and Garment grids for that.
It was also quite challenging to go through Via Infinito. But the reward was pretty good. The best accessory in the game, and you also learn the truth about Spira's past. What Yevon did with the spheres and such.

A good and underrated game imo.

I beat the game. To me it wasn't horrible then again it wasn't something that totally drew me into it either. I think the main thing about this game that bothered me was it was so jumpy timelinewise. We go from the present, to something that happened a week ago, to something that happened a thousand years ago, to somethign that happened two years ago. Although overall it made sense there were parts that were to me just there for space fillers. Such as the Luca, where Yuna had to run around as a moogle.

The overall gameplay was not bad. I liked the job class system and the introduction to spherebreak was a decent game. Definately fun to play.

Finishing the game with 100 percent was asking a lot to do. You have to sleep in the ship all three chapters. You have to do things in certain orders. Most of the things you'd never think about doing unless you were looking at a guide to tell you what to do. Some of these same things were redundant and annoying. <_<

Just the same as I said I didn't like it, I didn't hate it. My overall feelings were just meh..

I actually liked the game, though not as much as it's predocessor or Final Fantasy 9. My only problem is that Spira modernized too quickly. To a degree, I'm a gaming realist; I don't like seeing major inconsistancies between timelines or story plots. So what if Yuna is in her early twenties when she finds that sphere that shows "Tidus", as long as Spira has had at the very least four or five years of her Calm. Four or five years would definitely explain the rapid modernization of the world. Everything seemed to happen too quickly for my tastes.

Otherwise, I actually liked the game.

I think FFX-2 isn't needed as a sequel. I was pleased with the way FFX ended, and there wasn't any need to make a sequel. I really hated how Yuna was becoming like a clone of Rikku with a mini skirt =\ I liked her more when she was quiet and refined and civilised and all that. And somehow, an all-female cast drove me crazy! Paine was the one keeping me sane, as well as Baralai, Gippal and Nooj whenever they appeared..... And guns. There was absolutely no sign of guns in FFX (none that I can remember at least), and then poof, suddenly everyone's got a gun! >__<;

But I didn't hate the game entirely. The gameplay was hella fun. The battle system was enjoyable, and the mini games were addictive (Gunner's Gauntlet and Sphere Break <3). Some of the music was pretty all right as well and it was nice graphic-wise...

Here we go, basic pointers that made me hate the game:

1) Characters: By having a sequel there is a fair chance that you can show some development with your characters, its a way of telling the public that even if you have previously met the characters and went along with them as they matured because of their adventure, you still havent seen how this growth has affected them, their lives and the people they know, knew and will come to know. No chance, Yuna went Rikkuesque and ##### Rikku, they made her more annoying, i thought i could stomach Rikku for another game, of course i was wrong. God do i hate Rikku. Payne could have saved this department, beign the only character that they could make from the ground up and could have been the voice of reason alongisde the two idiots but that didnt happened. Payne became first angsty, then emo, then agnsty/emo and finally to celebrate like an 11 year old cocaine fueled kid with ADD like the other two.

2) Story: Its true there wasnt a need for a sequel but i wouldnt use that point since i got the game so i somehow wanted to see what happened next even though i pretty much enjoyed FFX ending with the twist at the end. However this time around the story was weak, beneath all that stupidity of each chapter there were just little nibblets of the main story and it never truly felt like the creators actually put some effort into it. If you are going to leach out of a popular, fairly decent game like FFX, at least try a bit harder to make the story interesting.

3) Gameplay/gameflow: this is not about the battle system, i liked the pseudo job system that the game had, my beef is with the way the game was played and "moved on". Every single chapter was the same, you had to go to the same places to do the same thing over and over again. For instance, who was the ##### genius that came up with the find the loser a wife and promotional minigame? once in a chapter to go through Spira was ok but every single chapter, the same places, the same people? thats just retarded.

So thats characters, story and game flow, totally ripping away any enjoyment, three strikes you are out bitch.

PS: I did actually finished the game with 96 percent, i was gonna get my 50 bucks worth of #### software.

Wow, thanks everyone. I'm getting some actual intelectual debate in here. haha.gif I really appreciate it. So I wanna pose another question to you all. Do you think you might have expected less of the game if they had labeled it as a spin-off from the start? I mean, to me, it seems like since they called it a sequal, specifically the very first direct sequal of any final fantasy game, a lot of people were expecting some serious mojo to flow from the game. But do you think you might have been less critical of the game if they had just called it something else and said that it had characters from FFX? I think it might have changed some reviews about it.
Raincoat
I liked the game a lot, even though I am not finished with it. There are a few things that turned me off it though...

The girl's had barely anything on in most of their outfits. Hello! I don't play a game to see a girl running around with nothing on...

Yuna: Went too girly for me. At least she didn't have the voice where she sounded out of breath...

Three playable characters: Not enough for me! I like being able to switch them around and such...

There was a bit more, but I can't remember due to a headache... I will think about it and post back.
KaiserDragon18
I definitely expected a bit more from the game; it wasn't like what I had expected. though when Yuna appeared wearing hot shorts in one of the previews of the game Electronic Gaming Monthly had done, I sort of lowered my expectations a little. Really, could I expect a serious, in-depth game with the heroine running around in short-shorts?!
As for if they had changed the title, calling it something else, I might have thought a bit differently about it. But what would they call it? Any title close to revealing what appears to be one of the constantly-present themes in the game (the girl-power, happy-go-lucky atmosphere) probably...no, definitely...would have turned me off to the game.
finduilas_09
I agree that things might have turned out a little differently if the game hadn't been hyped so much. Given how much publicity it was being given, one would think that Square would go the extra mile to make it a really top-quality game, but the developers only put in two or three years on X-2, and it shows. Who knows, maybe that's one of the reasons they're spending so long on FFXII. Six years is a long time to wait, but I'd rather have a delayed release and an awesome gaming experience than a short development period and a crappy game.

By the way, thanks, Finch. Every time I thought I had the
thing in the right place I only managed to screw it up more.
darth malice
everything well maybe not everything but it was short for a ff game to me they should have kept the sphere grid. changing jobs in the middle of battle was a good twist i liked that and on top of it there were no summons in the game come on now there should have been summons they could have put them in there some how like trap an aeon spirt in a special sphere or something well anyway thats what i think.
Armaros
I only have two complaints about this game. First the music. I can't stand the majority of the music, especially the vocal pieces. There's really no logic behind this besides it just not being the kind of music I enjoy (some of the boss battle music is pretty good though).

Secondly, the dialogue. It's just so annoying the way they banter back and forth, especially Rikku and Yuna. If it weren't for Paine, the dialogue would've slowly driven me mad.

However, unlike a lot of people here, I don't think the overall story is that bad. They just should've left out the whole Tidus thing. It really doesn't serve a very large purpose.

LYKEOMG AN AWSOME SPHERE~!!!! We gotta have it because it's just soooo awsomee!!

You mean parts like that tongue.gif

The dialogue annoyed me a tad but it really didn't make or break the game. The whole thing turned out to be the kiling Vegnagun reuniting Shuiyun and Lenne. I think the finding Tidus was a way to open the story. But I think they really could have put it on the backburner a tad bit more. Maybe only have brought it out on certain sidequests that were required to get the 100%
maxxumas
To me, the game lacked a certain feel because...well...we didn't really know Shuyin and Lenne did we? yea, we knew they existed during the War 1000 years ago and that Lenne was a Summoner but that was pretty much it. Was Shuyin a soldier or just a regular guy who loved Lenne? How did they meet? How did they get to Bevelle? I didn't really feel the emotion in the game when 1000 words was played cause I didn't really care about Shuyin and Lenne as much as I would have if the game had focused more on describing their history. Think aobut it, all of the great scenes in FF history that came close to making you cry, why did they make you cry? Because you got to know the characters. You sympathised with them and felt sad. Look at Aerith, would you have felt nearly as bad for her if her death scene had been the first time you saw her? Of course not, you probably would have just laughed a little or winced a little when Sephy stabbed her. Other than that, no emotion. So I think they could have saved the whole game by giving you the opertunaty to go back into the past and play as either Shuyin or Lenne for a while to get more of a feel for them.

Intresting side note about Rikku. did you guys know that her voice actrist won an award for playing Rikku? Just a thought to ponder on. I kinda like her hyperactive little butt. Althought in X-2, I can seriously see why a lot of folks were annoyed by her and Yuna's banter.

PAINE FOR PRESIDENT!!
AbYsS
I hated the music for the battles. It was too, Err.. not Final Fantasy-like. And the pop-techno for everything, Not to mention a lot of the themes got annoying really fast. I <3 Rikku because She was rikku xD

Ah, The whole Shuyin and Lenne thing also didn't effect me all too much. You barely knew them, as stated previously. If they went into their lives a bit more, maybe had some scenes with them in it ( Like the flash back scene in FFVII, the long one.) One where you could actually get to know their personality more, then it would of been better.

hey i liked the music the intro was really quite good and the vocal bits were cheesy as hell but over all i got 50% through and lost interest in it, it does get boring.

I'de put myself in between these opinions.
I liked it, it was entertaining, more original and innovative.
But, the more 'girly' feel to it did (to me anyway) make me feel slightly embarrased about saying i liked it.

Why I disliked the game...well after your sexual comments about guys dislike thios game only cause of the non d-sized slutty babes I'll give you this:

I am a guy who likes small breasts and girls that are dresses decent.

With that being said, I say this to Hiku:

Alot of people did yes, I for one never read any review of the game, I rarely read reviews anyway.
I just wanted to play this game since I liked FF X so much.

To me the game just sucked cause of a couple of reasons which I will tell now.

- The story: it had no depth at all, it was just Yuna and her goofy crew that wanted to know about the Spheres...

- Tidus should've stayed dead, X had a wonderful ending, except the swimming part, but X-2 ruined X

- The missions...I mean wtf, 75% was useless, had nothing to do with the story and were lame aswell...

- Paine...I mean how much more Cloud wannabe can she be....huge sword, tough clothing, gravity defying haircut and an "I don't care attitude"

- Rikku...like the never ever but happy personality...

- Also the Music, it sucked imo. It had a couple of songs that were okay with me, like 1000 Words, or Real Emotion, but that was it mostly...

The only thing I did like was the battle system, cause that was quite good, it was active for once (although I prefer turn based) and it was quick.

Seeing the places again was also something I liked...but X should've never had a sequel.

So yeah, I am a guy that likes decent small breasted girls, not some slutty d-sized one...not everyone is the same you know...

Wow, decent guys DO exist...

Anyways, I remembered some more reasons why I did not like the game much.

I don't like games where you have to get 100% to see a cool ending. You don't get 100%, you get a crappy ending. And half the quests sucked.

The stupid game with the numbers cheated me.

Paine: Tried to be so tough; all she ended up doing was looking like a guy...

Rikku: TOO happy for me...

The music: Not the great Final Fantasy music I am used to, and expect from these games.

Dress Spheres: I didn't like having to switch them to be able to cast 1 spell, and then have to switch back. Took way too long, and while waiting, the enemy just bashes you.

Battle System: Besides not being able to switch characters, the enemy is always attacking you, constantly. I liked FFXs battle system, how you could see who's turn was when, and how attacks could affect what turn you would get. You could also get up for a moment without worrying the enemy would attack you 50 times before you sat back down.
aussie_rpg_fan
Final fantasy X-2 lost me as well.

The game had its strengths and weaknesses, but just didn't have the involvement like the other Final Fantasies. Like the movies, sequels should be done when the original is deliberately left open at the end, and a sequel should be done properly.

I like the battle system, but continuously changing dresses to get the right is a real pain. Maybe the idea of dressphere system may needs a bit of re-working in the future.

The lack of GFs/aeons make it annoying, a battle should not last forever unless you are fighting a boss.

Lack of available characters... Yuna has gone too wild, Rikku has gone more annoying and Paine is too blokey. Three characters is not enough, especially getting hammered in battle.

But, good things is how Wakka and Lulu got together with a child, and how O'aka gets in debt with the Al Bhed.

First off:
To Dark Pesmerga, like I said, most of the guys I've talked to said gave the opinion that the chest and dress was a large reason for people not liking it. I was just saying why I wanted to start this topic.

Anyway, I'm really liking the points that everyone is bringing up. Lots of intelegent answers and I really appreciate it. Althought, I have to agree with some folks, I really didn't think X needed a sequal. It ended with a uniquenss to it that most RPGs wouldn't follow. The main male dies/vanishes. Granted, thats sad but I've always been a bit annoyed by everything having a happy ending. I rather enjoyed the bitter sweet ending of X.

Next up...I wanna hit whoever decided to name Lulu and Wakkas kid. >.> I sware I thought that was a girls name. Sides, woulnd't it have been more honorable (although most people would have probably complained) if they named their kid Tidus or even wakkas brothers name (I forgot it)

I mean, honestly, you have to give it to Tidus. He may have cryed a bit to much but honestly, he fought for a world that techniqually wasn't even his. He fought for people he had never known or even cared for. He fought even though he knew he was gonna loss everything. He found love and knew he was gonna lose it if they were successful. That takes a certain kind of bravery that most folks really wouldn't have when the situation came up.
