In the UK a couple of weeks ago we were unfortunately subjected to a new series of Big Brother. 13 weeks (or whatever it is) in which my poor television is continually raped everytime it has to show that program. And it is whored A LOT! And each year seems to progressively get worse imo. I mean this year one contestant has the condition Tourette's which for those of you who don't know is a medical condition in which the sufferer is has muscular contortions, vocal disruptions and outburts of swearing. Obviously he volinteers himself into the show, but BB must be pretty desperate for this. Oh! And there's a real life Barbie Doll in the house whose had so much plastic surgery she actually looks plastic. Not to mention seemingly every other contestant is a sex addict and one guy has already threatened to kill himself on live TV. What fun dry.gif

My point is, is that we seem to be developing a new culture, one in which real talent is no longer a criteria for fame. People enter the Big Brother house in search of fame and money, the only drawback however is that the public is fickle, and this fame doesn't last for long. They have their 15 minutes and they're evicted from the spotlight. Why do you think they hold the celebrity ones, to boost the fame of celebrities well past their sell by date. It takes the meaning out of those who work hard to be noticed, if people can get to the virtually the same position through doing absolutely nothing but more often than none make a mockery of themselves. Jade Goody was a Big Brother contestant here, and she is still in the papers pretty regularly . She is famous for being stupid! For goodness sake.

Though I shamefully used to watch this program as everything on TV was just this all the time, I really hate it now. I was wondering what you guys thought of this and what it has brought to society's view of what real fame requires.

Lol I just realised this should be in another forum xD

I'd be lying if I said I didn't keep up to date with this years Big Brother... but I'd also by lying if I said I watched it religiously.

It IS quite amazing... thanks to Big Brother we now have such talented celebreties such a Jade Goody

Maybe not...

I agree, but the people do it to themselves so I have very little pity. There are a lot of celebraties that don't posses a lot of talent (such as chatshow hosts or presenters) but they have still had to work to get where they are and develop their charisma and be noticed. All these reality programs do is exploit people.

I rest my case.

But seriously, being "famous" sells. No matter what people are famous for really. It's not called "talented" after all. Just famous.
Personally I guess I don't care much. If people find it entertaining, then they should be able to watch them act like fools or whatever. I just won't watch it myself. But this is a trend that started to grow more with the "reality shows."

This type of fame has always depressed me. Reality Flavored fame is by and far the worse type of Fame because they are really just average people. Who got lucky to be picked to be on a TV show. Their lives are manipulated to make an interesting story, and the character we are shown on our TV, is rarely the actual thing.

So, not only is this fame harsh and fickle. It is also showing a fake form of themselves. It isn't something I would want to have, eventhough some people would do anything to become famous. Do anything for that fame like be horribly misrepresented on a reality TV Series.

What I don't really get, is that people actually watch these shows. They are awful!!
