Over at Variety, a Hollywood paper, was where this rumor began. Exactly where the information is from, they refuse to give any details, but the rumors are that Steven Spielberg will be directing the (World of)Warcraft-based game, and that it should be out sometime during 2009.

Blizzard themselves are not denying or confirming it, but are only saying that they just want to find the right gang to make the movie as great as possible.

Here's a link: http://joblo.com/index.php?id=11769

Remember, its not at all confirmed, so don't take it for granted either.

I think this is just strictly rumor, and if for some reason Spielberg would even bother to think about creating a movie based on a video game I doubt he'd end up being the director for the film anyway.

Most game movies are on a pretty tight budget, generally not being able to cough up more than 50 mil for production values, and if you're wanting Tom Cruise to play some sort of Paladin, there goes 3/4th's of your production cost right there.

What I'm trying to say is I doubt they'd give this movie the budget for someone like Spielberg to bother with the film. His productions are EASILY over 100-150m per film and I do not see that being the case for this film.

Unless he's of course interested in doing charity work and working with B list actors.

I'm not so sure Warcrack's budget would be too small, given that it's one of the top MMO's continuously draining cash from millions every day with the playing fee's or whatever.

But this really isn't something I want to see made. Which I guess is just due to my dislike for MMORPG's in general, and the kind of addictions that come from them. I understand that it's peoples' own damn faults for throwing their lives away on these damn games, but meh. It's not something I'll be watching.

You can say that... But who is going to be behind the production? Do you think Blizzard themselves are going to be the ones coughing up the production budget? There has to be a company willing to foot the bill and someone to produce the funds to create this movie from the ground up. Not a lot of people are willing to take a huge risk and make a large budgeted video games. They prefer to go the cheap route, which is why we're so used to game movies being so campy with everyones favorite B movie characters in there.

I realize that Warcrack has millions of subscribers, but I just don't think they'll dump that kinda budget into yet another game gone movie. Then again, I could be wrong... But think about it... Mario Brothers was huge back in the day and Nintendo made mad money when they were the OG's of the game market having a large audience and gettin' cheese, and what we got was Dennis Hopper as King Koopa.

Eh im not going to take any news about this to heart because it still is just a rumor. I really could care less about who the director is. We all know its going to suck, yet we are still going to go see it anyway. There's no way around it.

Still, if he does direct it, I hope he at least goes all out. I would want it to be as good as it can be.

I dunno, considering Blizzard seems more involved in the pre-production efforts than most video game companies were with theirs, maybe it's likely they'll be supporting it a bit more budget-wise?

Taking into consideration this quote-

It sounds like they want something to do with it, rather than some previous game movies where game companies did not much more than sign over rights for someone to make it. I'm probably wrong here, but it's the impression I got.
Monty
I feel completely meh about this. Spielberg is not a director I particularily enjoy and I don't think he would be able to give it the feel the movie would need.

So, whatever, I am not really interested that Spielberg is on the gossip list for this production.

I highly doubt it man... Companies are stingy, and Blizzard doesn't even own themselves anymore as they're another one of Vivendi Universal's bitches now.

We'll see, I just don't see them putting more than 50-60 mil into this movie as game movies rarely cash in more than what their production values are for theatrical runs. Most of their revenue is generated from rentals and movie purchases, which is why we keep seeing more game movies and sequels to those game movies.

Seems like the source of the rumors was Yahoo! Films.

So much for that then. ohmy.gif
The Evil Dead
Yeah I #####' told you.

Sorry, I had to get that in... Spielberg would never stoop to the level of video game movies, not until they somehow gain the respect of critics and a list hollywood people.
