Played this game for one year, three months....but it all seems to fade away nowadays...I'll see if I can remember any useful tips:

If i remember right, you pretty much want to buy every single piece of new armor and weaponry you can get your hands on (being reasonable, of course, don't pay 20,000 gil for a weapon with 1 more attack...), otherwise people will not like you, since you're not in peak fighting shape, alot of people REALLY take this seriously.

Mostly, you're going to solo around your starting city until ten or so, then ask around for the next leveling spot....then party a lot there, then repeat.

Whenever possible, sell items in the auction house. Some items really surprise you with their worth. If you're going to be a tarutaru, and you start off at the taru home of windurst, you'll find carrion crawlers or something out in sarutabaruta, which drop silk. When I played, those sold for anywhere between 10k and 20k gil, not bad for level 5 monsters.

Make some friends, more important than you know! XD

Be prepared for hours of farming to make money to support your ranger job, pretty expensive job to play.

It WILL be a pain getting the missions done, hang in there.

Remember to get your chocobo liscense at level 20, ask around Jeuno for how to do it.

It's......really hard to explain much like this, the game is pretty trial and error, but don't worry, that's how mmorpgs are, most people are nice enough to help you learn. Sorry if these tips aren't much, but it really is hard to remember much specific help. If you've picked your job combo you probably know enough of the rookie stuff already.
