Take a jump into the celebrity world for once.

I was kind of surprised they decided to place Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie joint 35th place x.x'. Tom Cruise topping everyone? What do you guy's think of that...?
I don't want to stretch this post than it already is so I'll post my comment later xPP.

Its probably terrible I don't know who half these people are, even moreso I don't take the other half seriously. laugh.gif

I don't quite understand what they mean by "powerful". Do they mean how much money they have + how much attention they recieve or something?
Monty
I honestly don't care one iota about which celebrity weilds more power. It is subjective matter that I don't even care to pursue.

I didn't think there was a celebrity list I could be less interested in than "100 dumbest celebrity moments."

I was wrong. My interest is at an all-time low.

That's brecause they needed to make room for the real #1 celebrity. If you highlight the text above Tom Cruise, you'll see who the real most powerful celebrity is.
HiMAT ftw.

And I think they mean which celebrity has the most influence, in whatever ways.
This list could be completely jumbled depending on which site or magazine you're checking though. No Conan O'Brian?

Can I just ask... what is the point in making a post here then? blink.gif

I only did it to make discussion... I don't really care myself who comes out one top or who runs the world, but it doesn't hurt to have a discussion about it, right? x.x

Way to troll a topic, guys. =__=

I'm glad that they put a few Food Network stars on there, but wtf, where is Giada de Laurentiis?! I think she has more influence than that damned Mario Batalli, at least.

Something tells me that the "power" that this guy has is unlike that of the rest of the list.

Why is Paris Hilton on there again? Where the hell did she come from anyways? She just showed up, i wonder if i make a pornographic movie.....will i get on the list. I think who has more power is stupid. Half those people on there either have bulemia/anorexia or have a servant read for them. happy.gif

Yeah, yet you guys jerk off to World of Warcraft and Zelda. We're all into different things.

Those lists really bother me sometime because it shows you which douchebag celebs have the most power and income in the world of hollywood, music and sports. There's a lot of people on that list that don't deserve their fame and somehow are still favorites ( Tom Cruise!? ) and where the hell is Bruce Campbell?

Another surprise is how high up the Stones are on the list. Did they release a new album or do some major tour recently? Even then I don't see them being so high up on the list unless I'm just missing something.

I'll admit to being into just about anything celebrity related, I can be found watching numerous E! and VH1 specials daily.

Why the heck U2 up there? I thought most of the world doesn't even know who the heck they are. I just found about them a few years ago. They're at number 4? Well, ok.

Lol, Gay-Rod at 48. I think Jeter should at least be ahead of him. Though, not sure how popular, powerful or whatever they are. Is this list based on who has the most influence? Not sure why two baseball players would be on this list then.
Natsuki
Yeh, it seems quite a few people missed the link at the bottom of the list. If you click on the link, there is a paragraph just giving you a little info how the the list was made up (third paragraph).

QUOTE (forbes.com)
The rich and famous have had a great year--and a terrible one. Movie attendance dropped 8% last year as fans retreated to their home theaters, complaining of, among other things, high ticket prices. Can-do-no-wrong actors such as Nicole Kidman delivered the year's biggest turkeys ( Bewitched, anyone?). As a result, box office receipts fell 5% to $8.9 billion.

Breakups, babies and betrayals monopolized the headlines nearly eclipsing the careers of actors such as Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie (who, in a future twist of tabloid fate, tie for 35th on our annual list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Celebrities.) But generating headlines isn't enough to solidify your standing in Hollywood. A fat paycheck won't do it, either. Only a combination of earnings and sizzle will land a celebrity a coveted spot on our Celebrity 100.

To generate the list, we used a combination of factors including income, Web references as calculated by Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ), press clips as compiled by Lexis/Nexis, TV/radio mentions from Factiva and the number of times a celebrity's face has appeared on the cover of 26 major consumer magazines. Earnings estimates are for June 2005 to June 2006 and are dollars earned solely from entertainment income. Management, agent and attorney fees have not been deducted.

The year's biggest winners were the entertainment stalwarts. The 20 most powerful names in show business include seasoned old-school performers such as the Rolling Stones (No. 2) and U2 (No. 4), even Muhammad Ali (No. 13). The Champ cracked the top 20, despite not having boxed a single round in almost 25 years, when he sold the rights to his name and likeness last year for $50 million. Tiger Woods, who has been in the top five for the last five years straight, once again is ranked fifth, making $90 million over the last year, mostly from endorsements (although with $58 million in career earnings, Woods has made 25% more from actually playing golf than any golfer in history).

And the Rolling Stones aren't the only blast from the past--a lot of older marquee names made the cut, including comedian Jerry Seinfeld (No. 28) for the ongoing strength of his show in syndication; schmaltzy crooner Neil Diamond (No. 47) for a new album and tour; and Jodie Foster (No. 54), the highest-earning (and oldest) actress on the list thanks to blockbuster performances in Inside Man and Flightplan.

But despite being pilloried and parodied after pairing up with an ingenue 16 years his junior (nevermind the couch-jumping antics), Tom Cruise still reins supreme at the box office--and on our list. Love him or hate him, Cruise, who earned $67 million last year alone, is Hollywood's most bankable star.

But other stars are on the rise. Keifer Sutherland appears this year (No. 67) as a result of the incredible success of his Fox television series, 24. He reportedly inked a $40 million contract to play Agent Jack Bauer for at least three more seasons. Former supermodel turned talk show host Tyra Banks (No. 84) is making a play for Oprah's crown. And women's pro golfer Michelle Wie (No. 74), the youngest member of the Celebrity 100, had $10 million in endorsements before she turned 16.

I don't really see what's so important about these "celebrities". They do a job that's no greater than the average dude who runs your town bakery but they get paid a jackload, because people know their name.

Honestly I don't really see what makes them so special and apart from the rest of us.

However to each their own. I'm surprised Cruise made it given...or perhaps it's due to his ridiculous antics.

Oh well.

Well the lead singer, Bono, has been a big figurehead in the struggle against AIDS for a very long time now.
I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why they rank so high up. I always see him on TV talking about various different campaigns, gathering donations and going to Africa, etc.

Well you know, their ability to act, play music or sports well enough to get paid millions for doing so might be something that separates them from us.

As for U2, I'm pretty sure they're one of the top grossing bands in the music industry. Not only do they make ridiculous amounts of money through music contracts, their live shows with ridiculously priced tickets are always sold out because of the good word always surrounding them. Bono is always doing charity #####, people like their light rock because it makes them feel rebelious, and their guitarists name is The Edge. THEY ARE UNSTOPABLE.
Eva
Who the heck is Dan Brown? I'm trying to think about who he might be, but I'm coming up blank.

U2 well known, eh? I'm not that in touch with the music world. laugh.gif
Athrun
I believe Dan Brown is the author of the Da Vinci Code.
gelmar
Yes,Dan Brown wrote the Davinchi Code, and also J.K Rowling is on the list, because she wrote Harry Potter.

But,Tom Cruise first? I couldn't imagine that.
Raincoat
Yeah, I cannot figure out how the heck Tom Cruise is first, or why half those people are up there. Some people I can understand for being on there though.
gelmar
I think the same as you.
And I'm glad that Spielberg and Oprah are on the list. They deserved it.
But,I also thought that Leonardo Di Caprio is going to be on a higher place, cause he iz a good actor. (not just because of Titanic).

I just noticed that the Olsen twins topped Jerry Bruckheimer... wtf? blink.gif

Their popularity has pretty much died over here, so I'm guessing they're still running around making presses in the US? Odd enough, I hear Bruckheimer's name alot more than I do of the olsen twins x.x'.

Who is Howard Stern, btw?

Hahaha, what a list, typical "american" to list things, they do that with everything that is basically non important.

And you people wear wooden shoes. So stfu.

Annnyywwaayyys. I agree with the number 1 listing as Tom Cruise, but the rest of the list seems a bit...out of order, to say the least. Tiger Woods and U2? Maybe if this list were from the 90's, but now they don't belong anywhere near the top of that list. I'd also say Angelina and Brad belong waaaayyy closer to the top than they are. And there's also quite a few names I'd just erase all together, but meh.
Dart
About the list, it's not that I hate celebrity culture, it's that I find it to be this to be the most boring, obtuse entertainment list I've ever seen (and I wanted to express that in the form of a post. We can do that, right?).

Like I said, it's not like I hate celebrity culture. It's just, you know, the pointlessness of this list. I mean, this list is clearly bias and #######, considering how there is no consistency with this list and other lists, and considering who got the number one stop. It's fairly pointless, as these celebrities don't use their "power" for anything but to improve either public image and promote movies and projects. That's not real power, is it?

Don't let one bad topic ruin the forum experience for you though.
Bloo
Lol... Wat happen to michael Jackson??? The all famous line " Money Talks, Jackson Walks " Lol He shoudl be on the list... haha...

I don't usually do this, but I am sorry for my original post in this topic. While I think this list is awful, I never was trying to say the person who posted the list was in the wrong for posting it. I was merely stating my opinion about said list.

Let me make this clear, any list that judges the relative power a person has is going to be completely subjective, and one about the power a celeberity possesses without any indication of what other public officials possesses is inane and not worthy of note.

Also, people have different places in which they have a particular expertise. What Expertise is this list based on? If there isn't one than it adds even more to the subjective matter found with in it.

Call me an elitist. Call me what you will, The fact of the matter is this list is not a good list. I like other celebrity based lists, and even find myself watching the stupid Mtv Cribs show because I can't help but watch it, because for some reason I am interested in different celebrities.

Natsuki, neither this post or my previous post was meant as a slight to you. I would hope that people who post topics can realize that a person can disagree with the validity of the subject matter of said topics without offending the person who posted it. If not, why do we post on forums?

Monty
The Evil Dead
Alright kids, lets play nice.

As for the gay insult, I'm pretty sure it's as strong as ever and wasn't left behind in the 90's Vins.

As for " celebrity bias " and all of that Dart... Take another look at the list. Do you even know what Tom Cruises earning power is? What his power as an actor is? He can manipulate hollywood to do just about whatever... Like you know, not promote MI 3 because a certain episode of South Park was going to air again making fun of him. Notice how that episode has dissapeared.

I realize not everyone pays attention to the world of celebrities, and a lot of you deem it a waste of time and all that... But you guys do play RPG's and other video games, so you know, a lot of people would make the same argument against you.

Can you argue that Tom Cruise is probably the most powerful celebrity today? He gets paid over 20 million a film, gets work with the biggest names and studio's in hollywood and stars in movies that make hundreds of millions because of his name alone.

The rest of the people on the list have a reason for being there as well.

This list is composed by Forbes, it's not like they don't know what they're talking about. While this list can be deemed pointless, it's not unfounded.
spekkio
Nope, when you have a name like Sony behind you, you can charge whatever you like and people will still buy. Maybe you guys won't because you're all clever people and realise the price will drop before long, but many people will, and KK will be all the richer for it.
Bubble
Hang on, I cannot see Bill Gates on there - maybe I am blind. But he is the owner of Microsoft, if you can suggest Ken Kutaragi shouldn't he be on there too? Isn't he supposed to be one of the richest men in the world?
spekkio
Bill could buy a country if he wanted, but no he gives to charity instead. I guess this is a list of "powerful and evil" celebrities.
Bubble
Lol I suppose so. Lord knows the Olsen Twins are evil, sucking poor innocent girls into the world of make up and fashion and.... boys =o! And why in almost every film of theirs is their mother dead?! So depressing.

Half the celebrities on there I don't know either, could be cause most of them are American maybe. But I didn't know Bill Gates gave to charity, thats good =)
The Evil Dead
Why would Bill Gates be on this list?

Think very long, and very hard about that one guys. Go through the list again if you have to.

Thanks.
SwodeG
lol, apperently If you have that much money, your considered a "Celebrity". Or because it's not like he did anything in say movies, and/or music. Or maybe when they reached the end of their list they noticed they only had 99 people.

He's a successful buisnessman - like Richard Branson (also considered a celebrity), and a big promoter of charity. More importantly, he's a household name.

If he's not a celebrity, why did Bob Geldoff bring him on stage at the Live8 concert?
SwodeG
I don't mean to pick a fight or anything but there are a lot of successful business men out there, but they aren't considered "Celebrities". And if household names make people celebrities, I don't see the person who made "Windex", or the person who made "Pledge" on there?
spekkio
...and yet funnily enough you cannot name these people. Strange isn't it?
SwodeG
Touche'

However, these days (and somebody back me up on this) the term "Celebrities" usually refers to people in the entertainment industry. Execeptions are rare, and I don't think Gates clears the bar, now he might pay someone to remove the bar, but then again......

*And FYI Harry R. Drackett created Windex, and I believe he also created Behold, later renamed Pledge. So I guess he must be a god!

Alright Estaban, lets take a look at the situation here. Bill Gates is not a celebrity by definition, at least not under the criteria of this particular list. He is not a public figure, is not involved in entertainment in any way shape or form, and other than having shitloads of money there's nothing else to define him as a celebrity.

Do you think a magazine like Forbes would overlook someone like Bill Gates if he qualified as a celebrity? Seriously, just take a look again at the list and the explination of the list in the article and try to comprehend what we're trying to say here. It'd be nice.

Like The Evil Dead said, Bill Gates does not entertain us by casting in movies or playing a sport or even sing... That is why he is not on the list, no matter how rich he is. Heck, if it was all about how much cash you had, let's ask why isn't the Queen on there. blink.gif

Also, Dictionary.com sucks.
spekkio
Alright, maybe we should leave debating the definition of celebrity for another time tongue.gif

I wouldn't say the Queen was that powerful. Rich? Yes, but by the very nature of being the Queen she loses all ability to use that wealth. She cannot take opinion on any matters of public ambiguity without intense scrutiny from the press (remember how badly Charles got grilled for going to a fox hunt?). In the modern age, one of the most common ways to gain power from wealth is to invest in a political party, which is of course impossible for the Queen.

We're not debating the definition of celebrity at all... What we ARE debating is definition of celebrity by this list created by Forbes. They're not including people like Gates, who doesn't have a part in the entertainment world, he'll be included in their 100 Most Powerful/Rich people list that they do yearly as well.
