Gamespot says downsizing

So, this year was the last time we were gonna get a full blown kick ass exposition about everything that its gaming. Next year, May will pretty much have little meaning to us gamers and the dream of actually pulling monster strength to get into the expo will never become a reality for some of us.

Anyway, the article mentions the possibility of smaller shows through they year that will give publishers a bigger chance to impress without expending million of dollars in trying to get people to stop while they are on their way to see what the big boys have on their booth.

So, discuss, is it a big blow to the gaming industry or will this benefit it (i think it could), whatever your take, keep in mind we just lost a huge tradition we always counted on. E3, you shall be missed.

Oh well, there's still Tokyo Game Show, and some times I look forword to that one more than E3.
Though nintendo still refuse to attend that show for some reason. Maybe they'll have to reconcider now.

Holy #####.
Wow. Thats one thing I didn't see coming at all. E3 gone? I mean, I see more bad then good, its a tradition now lost (I don't get to make an "E3 expectations thread like I did for the past 3 years sad.gif) a huge well of gaming news at one point effectively destroyed, and the chance of exposure minimalized drastically.

Just...bad. But something else will come and pick up the slack, I'm sure.

You have to understand, Hiku, that this was an American show. We, basically, don't have anything happening on our shores (well, maybe GDC, but thats a closed event too, isn't it?) thats worthwhile, or nearly as big as E3. Its a definite loss.
Athrun
Well TGS still gets good coverage by media as it is a big event. All gaming magz I've read always report thoroughly from this event. And the thing about E3 being on Western soil is nice, but it is always closed to the public, so does it really make a big difference where it's located?
Xerno
Can't say I care about this. I've never followed anything related to E3 before. Actually, only this year on Dreamers did I pick up some of the E3 news, but I still hardly bothered with it. And if nothing had been mentioned about it here on Dreamers, I probably wouldn't have known anything about it. So *shrug*
The Evil Dead
I don't really care. You still get game information from magazines and websites... Now there's not some big festival that none of you get to go to anymore.

It's not a big deal, if it were, it'd still be around.

I wonder if game company's are going to still reveal their big game plans in May or just release it through out the year. I guess it's not so bad considering that all of the new consoles have been shown so perhaps we might see another big one in like 5 years(when the next gen begins).

GDC is not a closed event, but you do have to pay to attened (or you could apply to work at the event). It's more of a workshop that spans a week, but game company's tend to reveal their new technology or new games. Hopefully I will be able to make it next year.

Something else will take it's place, even if that something is just several smaller things at first. You're still going to get the same news, the same showings, and whatever else developers want you to see and know, when they want you to. The end of E3 simply means they'll be finding other means to do so. Life goes on, as does gaming...with or without E3. Developers and companies aren't going to suddenly lock themselves away from the world just because they can't gather at the same festival they used to. And again, there will be things to take it's place. And don't be too surprised if it is in fact a mirror clone of the E3 expo, under a different name.
Mistik
Maybe we will get a trade show open to the public like tgs. I doubt e3 will stay down for long. We Americans thrive on excess. Try telling sony next year not to spend millions of dollers to hype up thier products.
SwodeG
It probably only be "big" for say new consoles. Which BTW only come by every couple of years. I guess they figured that going big every year was a waste of money.
Pesmerga
E3 gone, well too bad. Imo it was getting to big anyway and it seemed that it wasn't about games anymore.
Also, being closed to public wasn't a good thing either. I still prefer the TGS, mainly because I can get to see all the funky Japanese games.
Loomis
It's not gone.

News have been popping up and around, and from what I hear, it's going to be more.... er, meetings and stuff. No huge convention for the public. I don't remember all that was said, but it was going to live on somehow, in a few different ways, and perhaps other smaller shows that would get larger to compensate.
Pesmerga
I'd rather see a game event open for public. Since I am only aware of the E3 and TGS, but something like that, but then for public would be much better imo.
Ocelot
Even though E3 is going to be a more smaller convention, I just hope that the public gets a few more shows that are more spread out, both time and location-wise, and are open to the public. Maybe some of them could be genre-specific conventions, or maybe even platform-specific conventions.

To be honest, that would be quite horrible. Just think how E3 was recently, with the whole place getting overcrowded because the eb dudes brought their families as well.

Smaller is fine, as long as we still get info.

Oh, and heres a news update about E3. It's not dead, it just changed its name.
