Yeah there's nothing really called the Ibox but I've heard a lot of rumors on the internet and even on the news on TV, that Apple may be considering working or are already working on a home console.
I'm curious if anyone has any insight to these rumors at this time, and what everyones thoughts would be IF Apple decided to enter the console market?
Personally I don't want to see it. The mac is embarassing enough... But I am curious if there's any truth behind these rumors.

I wouldnt see a benefit from apples side to do it, because I dont see where they would get their sales. You already have 3 systems out, 2 of them are solid, so would they really expect to turn a profit in this market? Also would they get any third-party support and whatnot, would they get enough games out on their system?
I just dont see them doing something that stupid and taking a huge hit money wise. The only way i see them selling any consoles would be a 150 dollar price tag and some kind of gimmick to lure people in, because it will take a lot to sway people from the 3 current consoles that just hit the market.

I'd say all 3 of them are solid as of now, so yeah, agreed on the first part of your statement there. It'd be tough to jump into a console war as a total n00b to the market, but it'd be interesting to see what they come up with. It damn sure better be badass at least in terms of hardware or design, if they hope to last even a month in the middle of the 3-way chaos of Sony, MS and Ninte. Knowing them they'll aim to be...different, which is always either a complete success or a laughable failure. Risky move on their part, but I'm definitely interested in what exactly they're working on.
Although, I don't think I like the idea of yet another console coming out. Gaming consumes enough of my cash as it is. I already have a 360, I'm getting a Wii soon, and I know I'll most likely grab a PS3 a year or 2 down the road... So that's already a huge chunk of change spent over time on console hardware, let alone games. If Apple manages to cook up something that catches my interest, I'm gonna cry. ;_; But over-all I heavily doubt any kind of success on their part in the gaming industry. I think the best they could possibly hope for would be to do as good as MS's first run with the Xbox, but the obvious difference being that they're not quite as big of a company. Either way, I've heard the rumors forever now, so I hope they announce something official soon so we know wtf is going on.
But they should really stick to the catchy name if they go through with it. They'll probably change it though. Just like "Revolution" became "Wii", it wouldn't surprise me to see "Ibox" become something like.. "Cooch". lol

I don't see this system being cheap. Has Apple ever been a company to sell their innovative products for a cheap price? Not really

Even if they go for something innovative- That's Nintendo's department, and that's what they're striving for. I think it would be difficult to jump in and innovate the innovators (Hehe). That doesn't mean that they can't try.
Granted, they very well could sell for the lower price and be the cheap console. I really don't see that happening.
I think they've already lost their chance, they should have released one before the Ps3 and Wii, and should have been innovative then with a moderately high price.
Oh well.

I'm not expecting much, but I think they should start now and get more experience and get truely into the console market, then there would be another nice line of consoles, assuming it would all go to plan, which I don't think it will but you know... they may as well attempt it.

Well yeah that's what I thought too when Microsoft decided to jump in between Nintendo, Sega and Sony. I think they announced the Xbox long before the Dreamcast was killed.
I guess that the only way to make room for a moderately successful fourth console would be if one of the current three get 'Dreamcasted' by the time it gets out.

The Wii?
lol. I can dream, can't I?
I see Nintendo going down before any other current company, at least home console wise... But I don't think that's going to happen this generation.
Yeah, their may not be much room at this time to enter the market but many people said the same thing about Microsoft when they brought out the X-Box. I think Apple would have a chance provided they create a decent enough console, gather enough third party support, and maybe run some of those " DUR IM A MAC " commercials for the system.

one of the 3 would have to go down for apple to even have a chance and the most likely to do that would be the wii and nintendo but I dont see that happening. There just isnt enough room for a 4th console and apple would be going greatly against the wind on this one. They would have to come out with a load of firepower(games) to make a run at even respectable numbers

You really think Wii is the most likely to go down of the three, Voyou? Because it looks like it will easily outsell X360 to me.

Yeah but Microsoft can take a hell of a lot more losses than Nintendo. They don't care if they're losing money so long as they have their own little corner on the market, and they most definitely do.
Nintendo is going to go the way of Sega eventually.
We're not here to have a console debate though, so lets keep this about an Apple console please.

Not much to say from me - but I thought about this a few weeks ago.
It would certainly not come to many as a surprize if Apple did, since they still want to one-up Microsoft for past reasons.
You don't wont the market to have TOO many home consoles though, thats why a lot of the ones back then didn't last long. Developers just wouldn't have enough staff/resources to produce for every console. An apple console would be like a skeleton.

evil said what i wanted to.. I will just add that once Nintendo goes back into its shell and produces nothing but kiddie games, then 360 will catch it and pass it. It happens with every nintendo system and this one will be no different. Hell wii is outselling ps3, think that will keep up down the line too? But yes this is about apple and not a console debate you naughty boy.
Im sure apple would love to beat Microsoft at the console war

They're both outselling 100% of their stock. The demand and popularity for Wii right now is far above what we see for X360. You can asume by looking at this that it will pass X360 in sales easily. Both PS3 and Wii would in a matter of weeks if there were enough consoles available.
The thing is, if Apple are to have a shot at this then there probably has to be at least one console tailing behind in sales. And the only one I see doing that is X360. That would mean that there would be four consoles out at the same time. Because as TED said, low sales won't ruin Microsoft. And low sales probably won't happen to Wii.

I disagree. I think the Wii will outsell the 360 in the longrun.

Bingo.
Even if Apple enters the market here, I don't see them surpassing the 360 in terms of sales. A new console, even from a company like Apple, will have to prove itself and there's not enough die hard apple fanatics out there to support the system. I think it'd just end up being a huge loss for Apple... But hey, I could be totally wrong.

Yeah I don't see them passing X360 either. It already has a solid fanbase, and whether it falls behind PS3 and Wii or not, that doesn't mean it's going to sell few consoles. Especially not low enough for Apple to be able to take a big enough market share to be concidered successful.
But it would be interesting to see how a fourth "successful" console would do. It's never happened before, and I think the reason for that is because there's not enough room for a fourth.

Then they'd most likely have repeated Dreamcast's failure for sure... being that it launched before PS2 and was completely destroyed there after.
I'm starting to think the only chance for survival they have here is to underprice the Wii... Because the cheapest console will always sell, even if just for the fact that it's the cheapest. They could easily target people still clinging to the previous generation of gaming, offering games on par or slightly above PS2/GC/Xbox titles, and there'd be little risk for any huge loss since they'd be manufactoring cheaper hardware. And if you look at the number of people still buying old PS2's, Xbox's, and GC's even now, that tells you there's definitely a market that'd eat up a new console in the same price bracket, if it could bring out the games to go with it. Many people would prefer to stay in the past era of gaming for price or other reasons, so Apple could indeed have a shot here if they went that way. It's just about the only area there's any room for a 4th console. But I guess that does seem like a very unlikely move from Apple. I'd have to assume that if they're going to try, they're just going to go all-out and try producing something aiming to beat out all 3 consoles, in which I'd expect a definite failure.
