Browsing around looking for news of new titles, it seems to be going more slow for this generation than I remember for the previous one. Even after the initial launch stock, they usually filled up with new games every month or so at a pretty decent pace, while also announcing new future titles along the way. I'm not seeing much of that now.
We already know which eyecatching titles are coming for the new console a good few months down the line.
Playstation 3: MGS4, DMC4, GTA5, Asassins Creed, Resident Evil 5, ZOE 3, Gran Turismo 5, Tekken 6, Ninja Gaiden, FF XIII, FF Versus XIII, Heavenly Sword, etc.
Wii: Mario Galaxy, Mario Party, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Harvest Moon.
But what's coming to PS3 and Wii in the meantime? I hardly see any news on new game releases for them that aren't month and months down the line. What about until then? Should we settle with the launnch titles for 6+ months?
The release list for PS3 up to April. (Thats about 3 and a half months.)
01/15 College Hoops 2K7
01/30 Sonic the Hedgehog
02/06 F.E.A.R.
02/13 Virtua Fighter 5
03/30 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The M...
Wow, 5 games in 3-4 months, thats sad.
The Wii is looking a bit better, but far from good.
12/18 Space Harrier II
12/25 ToeJam & Earl
12/31 Shrek Smash and Crash Racing
01/15 WarioWare: Smooth Moves
02/05 Bust-A-Move Bash!
03/01 Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
03/05 Mario Party 8
03/06 Sonic and the Secret Rings
They need some more titles to keep them going during theses months until the good games come out.

I dunno man... If you think back to the past two generations of console launches it was pretty much the same deal. It usually took close to a year for some really exciting titles to come out and it's just going to be the same for this generation. Unforutunately we just have to wait it out for some extremely solid titles to come out.
There's enough PS3 titles out now, and on their way, to keep me satisfied until some really good titles come along. Looks like it's pretty much for the same case for the Wii.
It'd be nice if they'd change it up and have more launch titles planned for next gen consoles... But for some reason it never goes that way. I don't know if it's because developers are trying to work with the latest hardware, are already finishing up on games for the previous generation of consoles ( I think that's usually the case to be honest. ) or what... But either way it IS a tad bit lame.
What are ya gonna do though? Soon enough things will get into gear.

Well I'm not asking for really solid titles to appear early, it's just I'd like to see some more games coming out to hold us over until then.
For PS2 I think the first big release was Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Gran Turismo, about 4-5 months down the line. But in the meantime we did get some more titles to keep us busy. Even rpg's like Ephemeral Fantasia, Orphen, etc. Not the greatest titles, but it's still something.
The overall number of releases for the upcoming months is pretty low this time.

As far as RPG's are concerned, that era is going to die with the PS2. I guess it would be slow as they are now going to adapt to needs of the newer breed of gamers(FPS/sports/action adv. fans and so forth). And it seems like every company wants to have it's own MMO, which REALLY takes away from the market.
It's just the first quarter though

I don't think the rpg era will die with PS2. There's Blue Dragon, Enchanted Arms, and Kingdom Hearts coming, so is White Knight Story and a new Suikoden and Final Fantasy.
But you know, among those early releases for PS2 I managed to find a few personal favorites, such as Ephemeral Fantasia. It's not a big title, and not a game most people like, but that was basically Sony's thing that made them so big. They released a crapload of games, and since every persons taste is different, chances are you'll find some games you like among them.
Well this shortage of games just makes me want to wait a while before getting into the next gen consoles.
I'll get Wii just for Zelda though, but I'll stick to PS2 for a while longer to provide me with new releases.

mabye in numbers its looking better, but def. not in quality of titles.
and yes it is really slow but just looking at that list of ps3 games coming in 4 months is enough.. plus ps2 is still coming out with games so its not major that the ps3 launch a ##### load of titles.

Who said those games listed above are coming in 4 mounths?
Nono, here are the games that are listed coming out in 4 months for PS3:
04/01 World Pool Championship 2007
04/02 The Darkness
Excited yet? lol
The "good" games I listed above don't even have release dates, except Asassins Creed I think, and GTA 4 is set for October 2007.
As for the "quality" of the games released for Wii and PS3, I'd say it's about the same.
Sonic, F.E.A.R. and Virtua Fighter 5 for PS3.
Sonic, Mario Party and Mortal Kombat for Wii
Well maybe one title here and there. Not a big difference.

Wow... Even I thought PS3 would start releasing better stuff sooner than that. I mean, the only titles I'd touch from that list are already old news for 360 owners. Wii's got a bit of a faster start, mainly due to having a decent launch from the beginning, with at least a few good ones coming. Still not quite as good as I'd expected though.
All the more reason I choose to wait on both, more so for PS3. I'll go for a Wii sometime early or mid '07, and I probably won't get PS3 until... '08? I figure there should be improved bug-free models out by then, with hopefully a price drop. But price drop or not, I'll get it by then if there's a good enough library to make me drop that $600.
But yeah, all 3 consoles were/are off to a slow start. I think the biggest factor in all of it, and the reason for the difference between now and previous launches, is the fact that the previous gen isn't "previous" at all just yet. So things will probably remain slow until sometime in '07 when they finally stop making games for the old consoles.

You guys act like FEAR isn't a good title or something.
Buy it and learn of its greatness.
And you won't be getting a price drop anytime soon... Probably not for a couple years. And I've yet to have a bug problem on our PS3. But yeah, doesn't hurt to wait. There's nothing absolutely amazing coming out on the system for about a year.

I think this is pretty common. On the couple occasions i have bought consoles on release I have learned it takes a bit of time before we get better release line ups, thats why I dont go overboard when a new console is released because I know that for about 6 months i'll have to wait either way. No biggie.

The thing to hold everyone over is the Arcade titles. I've probably spent too much money and time on Live Arcade games, but they are a blast to play. They release a new one every wednesday so there is always something new and cheap available. How is the virtual console and the PS3 online arcade games? I just download a game called Army Heroes and it rocks.

That's just you. The only good arcade titles are the ones you can DL for free anyway... Like Smash TV.
Arcade titles are NOT enough to hold me over.
The PS3 I know is working on putting out some more titles, but I think they only have maybe 3 available for DL at this time. I'm sure they'll expand it eventually but it'll probably take awhile for anything good to come out... Just like on the 360.
