Full Version: Online Zelda?

This is the silliest, wackiest, most stupid suggestion ever! But it's a suggestion nontheless.

I just suddenly thought while playing - what if they made an online Zelda world where you could upload your file into it, go in and fight other people? Maybe they could remake all the worlds like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker etc. Do you think that idea is good or as I put it - silly?
JD-san
It's one of those ideas that could work well but will never happen. Given that there's a number of different races and character styles featured in Zelda games, it's not hard to think up an ideal MMO in a vastly expanded world of Hyrule. Players would create their own character, be it Hylian, (What Link is, right?), Zora, Goron, Gerudo (Ganondorf's race or whatever), and whatever others they'd throw in, each having their own stat advantages for developing different types of characters.

I'd personally love to see something like this made for the Wii, but I just don't see it happening. Same goes for the Poke'mon MMO I've wanted for years, but all we get are those damn rehashed stadium games. =( Some ideas are golden but we'll probably just never see them done, or at least not done right.
Athrun
Like JD said it could turn out nice with all those different races. Being a Zora you could move around in water much faster etc, so there's probably good enough reason for people to chose different races.

As for a Pokemon MMO, it's probabbly coming soon enough.
Xanadu
smile.gif well at least people don't think I'm retarded! I think I'd love something like this to happen as well as you guys.
Dragon Brigade
yeah, I don't think it's such a stupid idea either. It'd be fun to be a different character and fight other real people or join them. But...Like most other things we wish...It's probably not going to happen, like Athrun and JD-san said...It was a good idea though^_^
Valince
There's no doubt in my mind that this would be a popular online game. It may even be too much for Nintendo to handle. Zelda has an enourmous fan base~. So it would never happen based on that theory lol. Think of the server load @_@.

I think turning Zelda into an MMO is a horrible idea.

First of all it's straying away from its roots, and really it'd be nothing more than WoW Zelda style. Sure you could have your different races and everything but basically different parts of the world would become your land, your temples would basically be the instances, and it'd just be another generic MMO outside of the fact that it's loosely based on Zelda.

I don't like Zelda anymore myself, but I'd like it even less if it were an MMO of sorts.

I was waiting for you to come out with something like that Ted wink.gif

Prove me wrong. How would a Zelda MMO really be any different than any of the other numerous fantasy based MMO's out there other than the fact that you'd have a Zelda universe to wander around in?

I just don't think it's a stellar idea, and I don't think a series like Zelda that has pretty much remained true to its roots so far should sway off course.

It's like Phantasy Star... Phantasy Star was an AMAZING RPG series that unfortunately got turned into a somewhat successful MMO for its time. Now it's still doing the MMO thing and PSU is nothing more than yet another generic MMO title that doesn't offer anything more than larger titles like WoW, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, RF Online, D&D online, or the bazillion other big MMO's on the market.

I would have preferred it stayed with its roots instead of expanding into a genre that has already reached overkill. I'm saying the same about Zelda.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Won't they still make a profit it off due to Zelda name? World of Warcraft Zelda? Isn't that good since I thought you liked World of Warcraft?

I'm not disagree with you though. If Zelda did that, it would likely be another generic MMORPG. I'm just questioning whether or not it's a good from a business point of you. I'm sure Zelda fans would run to game simply, because it's Zelda. Though, I doubt it be successful like the up tier MMORPG like Warcraft.

I wouldn't see why not. I never said it wouldn't be profitable.

A number of ways, actually. For one, the battle style is obviously VERY different from what's out there now. It's more action-adventure based than your typical RPG style play. And as Athrun pointed out, characters would also have their own terrain advantages such as faster swimming and water breathing as a Zora, Goron abilities to use in mountain areas or similar terrains, etc., etc... There's a lot more room for difference from other MMO's out there.

Not every series is going to do that though... Especially not Zelda. For further proof on that statement with a similar comparison, take Final Fantasy. FFXI was and is one of the top MMO's out there... (although I personally see nothing in it, but that's another subject for another time) And it very much so "strayed from its roots" compared to the rest of the series before it. But that didn't mean that MMO's were all they did from that point on, did it? Nope... In fact the numerical series just got better after that with FFXII, and FFXIII looks badass as well. So a series like Zelda, with a successful past comparable to Final Fantasy, would probably turn out similar - They'd create the spinoff MMO and expansions, but still release badass 1-P games like before. I understand your problem with the Phantasy Star series and I agree with you as far as that goes... but Zelda is a very different series with a far more successful past built on 1-P games, and they wouldn't just throw that away to make MMO's only.

I'd only agree that it's reached overkill for PC... And somewhat XB360. But Nintendo consoles haven't yet seen MMO action, and there's plenty out there who'd definitely eat up any MMO released for the Wii, especially a mascot title like Zelda. So I really don't see any reason for this not to happen, except for developers continuously failing to capitalize on great ideas. Maybe one day though. Who knows.
Xanadu
JD you've capped everything precisely. I mostly agree with this statement right here -

100% correct.

I also agree that the battle system is unique, it's plain, but free combat you just swing your sword and kababoombaBAM! Yeah

It would be different because it would have the lock on fighting style of Zelda, which would be alot better then holding a button to attack, because you could dodge, attack you know with the wii mote (since it has wireless internet thing) so it would make sense.. And yes I know they won't but THAT is how it would be better... so you are proven WRROONG and if someone else already said this..sorry?
