Glad to see Resistance at number 5... It's really one of the best FPS titles in a long time, PC or console.

Prey being mentioned is good news.

FEAR at #25 is fair enough I guess.

HL2 Episode 1 at 20 is cool.

FXII at 12 makes sense.

Guitar Hero 2 at such a high rank is garbage.

Gears of War at number 1 is total #######... Yeah, great, it's innovative and I like that but a 5 hour campaign and very limited multiplayer doesn't score it number 1 in my book.

And I'm confused... Why include HL2 Episode 1 and not HL2?
Voyou San
there are many rankings in this i just dont get, but a lot of them do seem fair.. i would have seen hl2 as a higher rank doh and guitar hero 2 lower, not sure how it ranks at 4.

I'm surprised to see Kingdom Hearts 2 down at #35 when games like Guitar Hero are on the top 5.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. It's around 8 hours, more if you're playing on Hardcore or Insane. And I've had a hell of a time trying to finish co-op with friends, since it seems they make Insane 10x worse to compensate for giving 2 players a challenge. But I don't have any real complaints on the campaign mode being too short. It has enough replay value to keep me playing co-op now and then. Hell, the only reason I buy FPS games is for multiplayer anyway, which is the case for most people. So judging the game by the 1-P mode is kinda silly. Though I do agree that Gears as #1 may've been a bit much. I thought Zelda was going to snag 1st, judging by how impossible it's been to find a copy for even GC. That may've been more due to limited production though. *shrugs*
Athrun
Well it's going to be mostly Zelda and Gears of War on that spot on most lists I imagine. But I'm not surprised about the #1 here because when a good game appears on Xbox, suddenly it's the greatest game in the world. Just look what they did to Halo and Halo 2. It makes FF7 seem under-hyped. =p

If you skip all the cutscenes it's a little over five hours on hardcore ( and who plays it on easy mode? wtf ). I'm about halfway through on Insane and it's not taking me terribly much longer, just a few more deaths than before thus far.

Sure there's replay value, I'm not knocking it. Just compared to say the 12+ hour campaign of Resistance Fall of Man and the kickass 64 player multiplayer it baffles me that Gears made it above it. Props for originality but I'd rather take a solid FPS title like Resistance which is far more fun and delivers on every premise of the title flawlessly in singleplayer and most importantly, multiplayer.

Did I forget to mention the lackluster multiplayer? Wow... 2v2 or 4v4. With Resistance you get up to 64 player deathmatch, 32v32 team deathmatch, 5 other modes of multiplayer play like capture the flag, etc... You're able to determine which weapons are on the map, damage modifiers, number of players and other tweaks. I just think that Resistance Fall of Man is worlds above Gears but since Gears has this one little innovation, magazines and review sites are going apeshit like they always do over something just slightly new to a genre.

Sorry dude. I've played a lot of FPS titles and while I definitely enjoy the stop and pop of Gears, it's still not a finished product to me. I think a more lengthy sequel with a better idea on multiplayer outside of what's available now will really put this series towards the top of my list. It's by Epic so I know that they're going to be giving us a better product with a sequel that expands the ideas of the original.

I'm not saying the game is terrible, and I'd say it's definitely in the top ten for the year but saying it's the best of the year is a bit silly.

Oh yeah... Dead Rising at 7 is crazy. It's an awesome game and all but, I don't know about it being in the top ten. It has too many problems and annoyances in the game to make it top ten of the year material.

I never claimed it was better than Resistance. Couldn't really say that without having played the game. But assuming it's as good as you've said (which I don't doubt), you can thank Sony for it's spot at 5th instead of first. Had Sony actually developed an online service to match or surpass Xbox Live, I think Resistance and all similar games to follow on PS3 would be getting a lot more of the attention they deserve. But it's still definitely a title I'm interested in when/if I do pick up a PS3, although by the time I buy one there'll probably be a Resistance 2. =p

And on Gears... I never defended it as first on the list. I actually agreed with you, but just argued your 5-hour argument. Yeah the cut scenes do take up a chunk of that 8-hour time, but it was meant to be that way. It's even advertised as a "both cinematic and gaming experience" and all that ####. But all in all I can't say it deserves 1st on the list. More like...somewhere between 4th and 7th. It's not even as inovative as it's said to be... anyone who's played the Eradication game mode in Perfect Dark Zero will recognize that entire multiplayer setup of only living once, reviving teamates, mixed chat and spectating when you're dead, etc.. Breed that with some Halo-styled mechanics, throw in grenade tagging and chainsaws, and voila... you have GoW.

Agreed. The 8-player max and team-only setup is for a reason... Basically consider the first GoW a beta, with the following sequel(s) to add free-for-all style play with a larger number of players. People scattered everywhere in a free-for-all deathmatch chainsawing, fragging, and killing every way possible will be absolute madness, and I look forward to it. But with an experimental playing style as it is, they obviously needed to start small, and learn from the millions of people test-running the game engine over Xbox Live with this first title. Already being pretty fun in it's baby stages, it'll be interesting to see what kind of insanity they bring us in the rest of the series, which I hear is supposed to be a trilogy. I hope that's the case.

Guitar Hero quite popular, especially compared to a RPG. The first Guitar Hero did extremely well in the US. Plus, the list most likely for the US. I can't see half of those top titles being close to top 10 in Japan. RPG are not quite that popular genre here in the US, but I know you are aware of that. It's surprising enough FFXII was even to crack the top 20, but that's one of the few RPG series that receive a commerical here and there on US TV and Final Fantasy a well known genre in the US for RPG. Kingdom Hearts 2 did not seem to have a strong following this title around in the U.S. this time around, unlike like the first title. Heck, I can't even remember if a commerical got aired. 30-50 where it should be. In Japan, it's likely among the top 10.

No, Resistance Fall of Man is definitely not game of the year and I think its spot in 5th is appropriate.

As for developing an online service... Okay... So a free online service with matchmade ranked games just like Halo 2, and creatable custom games isn't good enough? You're able to search for custom games just like you can in Gears. You can message each other through the game, form a clan, invite friends to a match, have a friends list... It's no different than X-Box Live and Insomniac has set up a great online system for the game much like Bungie did for Halo 2 ( Outside of the annoying matchmaking for unranked games, which is why I like Resistance you can pick your custom games. )

Gears is top ten as well but claiming it as number one is silly.
