Sigh, FPS's are pretty much my favourite games...but I've been looking for a really good one for awhile now...and I got Painkiller: Hell Wars. It SUCKS. It seems like I've pretty much played them all, to my knowledge. Help me out? Oh, and a question...is Half Life 2 for xbox any good? I'm just looking for somethin' with a lot of interaction and a good story...or at least a damn point to the game.

Well there usually isn't much of a story in any FPS game, but Half-Life 2 does have one of the better ones that you will find. You have probably played both Halo games, so there is no need to tell you to play them. Really, you won't get much of a story in any FPS game.

Well, I mean not really a story..just a point to it, yah know? In Painkiller, you just...kill everything. You don't find soldiers you need to help out, you don't have objectives. You just kill everyonoe, go in the wormhole, and boom, level 2, kill everyone.

Dude.
Painkiller won game of the year in NUMEROUS PC magazines and definitely doesn't suck. Maybe do a bit of research on titles before purchasing them in the future brosef because it's not storyline based. It's an homage to old school FPS titles like Doom. There are cutscenes and storylines to the game after you beat each chapter.
When Painkiller first came out about 3 years ago ( Yes it's been that long, why they put out Hell Wars on the regular X-Box this late is beyond me ) it had one of the most beautiful graphics engines available and made use of the Havok physics engine which is now pretty standard in a lot of PC FPS titles and is even being used in a lot of console titles as well.
In fact, it's one of my favorite PC FPS Titles of all time... Don't know how it turned out on the X-Box outside of a few positive reviews I've read ( Scored around 8/10 in a mag and 2 sites I read reviews for it at ) but the PC version looks amazing and offers some of the most intense and enjoyable gameplay I've experienced in an FPS title in years. The title is even a staple in the CPL gaming league.
You're in the FPS genre. If you're looking for a game with a point play an RPG or something dude. FPS titles are generally just run and gun, even most that do have a story don't offer much to the table unless it's halflife 2 or something.
Anyway... To the recommendations:
Halflife 2 for the X-Box is tolerable but there's no extras because the system could barely handle having the title in the first place ( Which is why I never understood why HL2 hadn't gone to the 360 WITH Painkiller ) so I guess if you're limited to a console ( Which is my guess here ) Then sure, go ahead and pick it up. Just don't expect anything extra because it's just the main game. There's plenty of storyline and people to talk to in the title though and I guess you'll feel like you'll have more of a point.
Timesplitters 3 is amazing as well. Definitely one of the best console FPS titles around, I highly suggest getting it if you get the chance. It's got that Goldeneye kinda feel to it but it's a game from this generation that offers hundreds of unlockables a fun story mode and tons of " challenges " that unlock goodies like extra characters in the game for you.
Darkwatch was a really good FPS title as well. It has a storyline so you'll probably enjoy it and feel like you have a purpose, but it has a pretty solid engine as well. You're some guy who gets turned into a vampire in the wold west, you can hop around and pretty much fly/glide and blow the ##### out of all your enemies. It's good times and I definitely recommend it.
Doom 3 for the box is tolerable provided you can't run it on a PC instead.
I'd list more titles but I pretty much think you're working from a regular X-Box ? You could always buy like one of the hundred World War 2 based FPS titles out there. There's plenty of pointless storyline in those.
Let me know if you have any other consoles or a decent enough computer to run some PC games because I'll go outside of the box ( har har ) and list some more titles off for you.
I find it hard to believe that FPS's are your favorite genre if you're dissing on a title like Painkiller. You should have massive respect for a title like Painkiller which is a grassroots FPS title that has some of the best FPS gameplay you'll ever find and really defines what the genre is all about.
We're all entitled to our opinions of course... But if you don't like a genre definer like Painkiller... What are you going to like?

Yeah, I got Darkwatch and Timesplitters(all three), I mean, Painkiller is fun..but I mean, I was expecting just a lil more yah know. I guess I'll just have to play more into it and then if I don't like it, return it. But anyway, I got ps2, xbox, and GC, and a decent computer...and I'm about to get a 360.
Hit me up.

You could just wait around for Bioshock which seems like its going to be the hottest piece of ass this side of Duke Nukem 3D. Hell, it even makes me want an xbox 360 and i will probably get one just for that game if Bioshock doesnt get a ps3 release.

If you're looking for a good story, you can't beat Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Just don't expect a serious story because it isn't. It's actually quite funny at times. Aliens Vs. Predator 2 for the PC also has a pretty good story too, with the story of each species entertwining with one another. Just don't get the Primal Hunt expansion, because it'll be a major disappointment.
As far as the Gamecube goes, the only FPS titles worth getting are the Metroid: Prime games, because all the other FPS titles for the 'Cube can be found on other consoles. They're quite a bit of fun, although at times the difficulty can get to be a bit much. The controls also take a little getting used to, because unless you're locked on you can't really "run n gun."

Maybe its just me and I don't have a pulse or something but I don't find either of these games scary at all there were probably only two points in FEAR where I jumped and thats it. FEAR is a class game amazing AI and a thrilling game game from start to finish with a decent multi player.
Rainbow 6 Vegas is a hell of a good game too if you have a 360.
I wouldn't get a Half Life 2 for the xbox its frame rate issues really annoy in comparison to the PC. I think that there will be me sort of Half Life compilation along with Episode 2 I think> (some one will correct me if I am wrong

)for the 360 sometime this year so it my be best waiting for that.

Yes... I don't know when it's coming out or if the title will include the additional episodes but there is a plan for HL2 on the 360 and PS3.

Try Counterstrike.
It might sound cliche, but the game is just an amazing FPS, plus there is a high competition level.
Unfortunatly there are also cheaters, but those are in every game.

Hmm, I'd reccommend Savage or C&C:Renegade, but those games are pretty old so by now the only people playing are the ones that still have been playing from the start, aka are reeeallly good. So being a newcomer in that game would be somewhat discouraging.
Therefore, I'd probably recommend Savage 2. It isnt out yet, but I highly encourage looking it up. It's somewhat a mix between RTS and FPS, and it works very dreamily, if everyone knows what theyre doing. I've had great times with the original game, and will have great times with the new one when its released.

Dude the level of cheaters in CS is higher than ANY other FPS I've ever played. I don't know how bad Source is, but I imagine it's just as worse as 1.6. CS was great times of course but it can be difficult to find a server where someone isn't cheating.
I think they've added some admin cheat detection things but I don't even think most admins know how to work that crap properly. Plus I think to level the field against cheaters they added a radar function where you can see enemies that are firing or were spotted by your teammates or something.
Loom I always found Renegade to be kinda weaksauce myself. I mean it wasn't a bad FPS by any means but it felt kinda like it was halfassedly made.
You could always go pick up Warhammer 40k, Firewarrior for the PS2. I spent 5 bucks on it and I'll be damned if it's not an ok 5 dollar game.

let see. Good FPS games
I suppose that largely depends on the system you want it on.
Half Life 2 rocks hard. It actually had a bit of a plot to it. At teh very least you knew where you were going and why.
The game play it awesome. especially when you get a certain weapon that lets you pick up saw,s and chuck them at your enemy. hehehehehe
A lot of the levels were a lot of fun.
Halo was a lot of fun. Not as much as HL2 but then I never beat Halo.
I know of a few more but they are all a bit oldschool. These two are the most recent FPS that i have played.
