My friend rented it and beat it in the matter of a weekend.
Correction: A night. XD
Yeah, I rented it and enjoyed it very much. The story seemed pretty nice, and even built off of a handful of details from the original plot of FF VII. It was definitely nice to get some more development on Vincent's character as well, and I think DoC did a good job giving some closure to his story. The gameplay was fun, in my opinion, and the controls weren't very hard to get used to. The gun customization was fun to mess with, as well, though I found the machine gun to be somewhat useless for most of the game. *shrug* It was fun messing around with Galian Beast, and it certainly helped in boss fights and other situations. The graphics, as many pointed out, were great. Not just the FMV's (which were indeed amazing; Advent Children-quality), but the in-game graphics were nothing to be ashamed of, I thought. Everything seemed to run rather smoothly. Overall, I was a bit surprised with how much I enjoyed the game. Sure, it was short, but I thoroughly enjoyed those 12-13 or so hours of the game. (I was also renting
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria at the time, so I didn't bother with many extra missions. After I completed DoC, I pretty much put it away and started working on VP2.)
Oh yeah, I never really did figure out what those capsules were until I had already beaten the game. Haha. ^^; The game didn't have the manual with it, so I wasn't able to consult that, so I only shot a couple of them, thinking they were just quick saves or something. Wish I'd known earlier that they'd unlock things at the end of the game. >.O Would've also helped if they told you about them in the tutorials in the beginning as well, but I guess they wouldn't be very "secret" then...
Anyway, overall, yes, I found it to be a very enjoyable game, and in many ways. Due to its length, however, I'd probably only recommend renting it. After playing it through a rental, you can decide for yourself whether or not you think it's worth permanently adding to your collection. (Personally, I plan to buy it at some point, though it's not particularly a priority of mine. Someday, though.)
