Full Version: Why Yaoi is so Popular?
RPG Dreamers Forums > Japanese Animation > Anime and Manga

Okay. I have a connfession: I like Ansem *Beeping* Riku and I don't know why. unsure.gif

The main quesion I need to understand is why Yaoi is so popular and not Yuri?
Razael
Because the world we live on makes Baby Jesus cry.
Xerno
Yuri, not popular? I don't think that's true. But as for yaoi; girls (and some guys too *cough*) apparently like seeing their favorite bishies make out and... stuff. I'm not sure who I asked, but when I asked why they like seeing those bishies do so, and if they didn't rather prefer them to be straight (for their sake, you know? xP ), I got answered: "Because then we get double fun, 2 bishies making out is hotter than one". I think I asked Seluna, not sure anymore.

But I think Yuri is equally popular, though it's true I see yaoi mentioned a lot more on this forum. Me...? I wouldn't dare. =P
Nani?
Despite being for gay rights, the whole Homosexual anime thing is going straigth over my head.

What i'm really confused about.....why are you looking at a cartoon for this in the first place? Ink+Paper=Erection? Where did that come from?
Death
Wow...Great topic /end sarcasm

Uhh, because it sells more would be my guess, i'd rather not look at yuri, or yaoi. I like my girls real, without dicks
Nani?
How bout real girls and not Ink and Paper?

I'm starting to question everyone's sanity here. Science damn I feel like that one guy at the party who always sits off to the side, doesn't know anybody, doesn't know where to go....just sits there and drinks something for three hours and leaves.
Xerno
You'll find that most pixelated characters (not just anime, game characters too) are designed to match the definition of beauty. You won't find any real person who looks as flawlessly stunning as a lot of anime and gaming characters. I'd imagine that's why "ink and paper" and not real people. ;p

En favor de opinion.

:x

Besides bad spanish, I have to think that Yaoi is a lot more popular than Yuri as well, or at least from what I've seen on the masses at DeviantArt/LiveJournal/Forums etc. And in all honesty I dunno either. :O I personally would get the most kick out of ME being in the spot of the kissed/held/caressed/hugged rather than an animated/drawn character. ;-; (And jealous if it's a real person, wahh.) So yeah, it all flies over my head, but if I were to go by observations, I'd say Yaoi is more popular because it's less cliche and skanky to see two unrealistically beautiful boys make out than two unrealistically beautiful girls?

Eva
They're both popular, depending on where you're looking.

I don't have much else to add to discussion other than that.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree.

Anime/game characters may look good and all that, but putting them above the real thing is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who says otherwise is in serious need of getting laid.
Xerno
Well, anime and game characters are often designed to be perfect. Their skin is flawless, the real thing will never be that "perfect". But I agree the real thing is better (besides, perfection does not exist). But for me there's a world of difference between yaoi and gay porn. It crosses my moral line to watch erotica with real people in it. On the other hand; pixelated, fictional characters are not real and I don't mind watching that... lots of that. xP

So to better understand this, it's your (and possibly others) way of watching porn without crossing your moral boundries? I guess that makes some small shred of sense. But I could still honestly argue the point on appearance differences. I've seen quite a few flawless looking models, both nude and non. Some even go through quite the amount of cosmetic surgery to make themselves as such. And still yet while you may say animated characters are "flawless", I could also say they're simply lacking detail or realism. Now if there were any realistic GC yuri/yaoi (matching FF7 AC in quality, for example), I'd be a bit more willing to concede a bit on the matter. But otherwise most of it is, for the most part, more simple than it is "flawless" if you'd ask me. But perhaps they're one in the same for you. To each his own I s'pose.

I don't know. I'm too busy avoiding them like plague.
Seluna
Xerno, you asked me that question. ^^;; And I remember because that was and still is my answer. It's like how some (if not most) guys like watching lesbian action, me thinks. It's the attraction of the opposite sex multiply by two. Especially since I'm a bishonen fan first. XD Why not have two bishonen than tolerate some female I don't particularly like? (I do like some female characters but some are just.... urghhh *do the straggling neck motion*)

That's just my reason of liking yaoi. I won't say that all yaoi fans think like me, but I know a few that thinks similarly. As for why it's so popular... well... maybe the most original definition can answer the question:

QUOTE
Technically, the term "Yaoi" is an acronym for the Japanese words, "Yama-nashi, owari-nashi, ima-nashi" ("No peak, no point, no meaning", when translated in English). It was used in reference to the works of artists and writers that portrayed beautiful men or boys having a relationship. Intended for the enjoyment of female consumers, most of the characters of these works came from various popular anime series and possess a striking aesthetic beauty so celebrated that probably no male alive on earth could ever compare to it. At present, "Yaoi" is also used to refer to fan works that were produced mainly for the enjoyment of fellow fans. Fanfiction, fan arts and fanfiction archives are very common examples of such.

As for yuri... it is not popular in comparison to yaoi? o.o Maybe because yaoi fans are more outspoken? Or perhaps because yuri is so... 'normal' in the hentai scene that guys don't make a big fuss out of it, unlike yaoi which has to be classified aside specifically. I don't really know, since I'm not an expert of hentai. You gotta ask somebody else that.

And uh about the question of why hentai and not porn... well... to me, porn feels like one hell lot of playacting and/or repetitious actions, despite varieties. I haven't exactly seen gay porn but I can't bring myself to see it. Maybe it does have something to do with hentai being not real and not having as much flaws than the real deal. And in hentai, anything goes, even the strangest fetishes (like tentacles >.>). And nobody gets hurt or look fake like hell since... it's just pencil + paper, or pixels, moving or not.

I prefer my entertainment written, anyway.

It's even worstat conventions. Girls come in with paddles with YAOI written all oer it, and some of them expect some of us guys cosplaying to make out with each other. *shudders at bad memory* Wow, was I harassed that day. Well to why YAOI is so popular? Hel if I know, it just is, apparently two males making out is more popular to women than two women making out.

I'm only asking that question because I can't find any Yuri gallery but I found alot of YAOI. So I wonder why base on that.

Lesbians > Gays.

It is the law of the universe.

And I'm still having a bit of trouble with the whole Ink and Paper deal. Honestly, the people who search for that are either super perverts (and this is coming from me, the Pervert), or annoying fangirls......

Well now I think I know why Yaoi is so popular. Annoying fangirls.

(At this moment, I am listening to drunk lesbians being interviewed on the radio)

The logic applies is actually the same as... "Why people likes anime?" For the sake of watching!

The ink and paper deal, why question it? Some fans do get excited too when a new chapter of naruto or bleach is being updated. Why not try asking them, "Hey there! Why are you so anxious about a new chapter being uploaded, I mean its just all ink and paper right?" (no offense on that though).

Naruto is ink and paper too, so why can't Yaoi? Its all just what people prefer really...

As for why Yaoi is more welcomed then yuri, I can only say that, there is no way you can judge it... No one can say that yaoi is more popular then yuri, there is no proof is there? If you tell me that Yuri is less popular because you can search for yaoi much faster, then that isn't a good reason at all is it?

Lance.

With Yuri all the woman have overly large boobs...at least with Yaoi they can't give the men over sized erections.

I really don't care either way Hentai is Hentai.

What's the difference between looking at " ink and paper " and porn containing " real " women considering they're both on your computer screen?

Hentai is a huge business much like the porn industry. I don't think the people that view it are any more perverted, everyone is into their own thing.

Anime is JUST a bit different then Hentai. And by just a bit I mean the intent is INCREDIBLY different.

Really, it's trying to give you an erection, or get you excited. Where anime is trying to tell a story (I know some doujin has a story, but that doesn't count. It's mostly just trying to give you an erection).

*Mocking Televangelist voice* Well....I do believe sawh, that Hentai anything related to the Japanese are causing the moral degeneration of our culture! The obvious solution is to preach about it on shows that nobody watches or cares about anyway! Praise white Jesus!

Then won't you be contridicting yourself? First you say its te fan girls, now you say its for us people to get an erection xD....

Not just some doujin has a story, most yaoi anime/manga actually has a romantic plot too... You are like generally saying that anything that is yaoi must be porn! It will get you excited and whoa! Lol... no... not all of them really.

If you are saying those "Wet erotic xxx doujinshi" then its another thing, just like viewing a porn show "movie poster" and the show itself. The movie poster and sometimes has a erotic picture on it, would you go high and crazy? Usually is while you watch the thing isn't it xD? (No offense again)

Like Dookster said, us yaoi fans don't always go after yaoi material for the sake of getting hot and bothered. Sometimes yeah, but not all the time, obviously. There's more to yaoi than just watching (or reading) two (or more) good-looking bishies getting at it. I have a few shonen-ai (shonen-ai because it's way milder) manga series that has no sex whatsoever and has great storylines. The popular shonen-ai animes Gravitation and Kyou Kara Maou don't have sex scenes either. Although shonen-ai materials are generally more story-based, yaoi materials aren't that far off.

As for getting excited over printed or drawn stuff instead of the real deal... well, it's the matter of perception and imagination. And how you are sending those 'get excited' signals to your brain. If you watch porn and feel that it is so damn boring or disgusting, I don't think it's likely to get a person excited.
Alazuli
In all honesty, I don't see Yaoi as more popular than Yuri, but since in situations in Hentai where most of the audiences are male over female, Yaoi generally is taken out. Yaoi is directed towards females, so I see it as separated and put into its own catagory. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course. I don't watch hentai.

But I believe we see more fanbase for yaoi / shounen-ai rather than yuri because fans of it (ie. Fangirls) are generally more outspoken about it when compare to a fan of yuri. As in being more creative about the pairing(s) they support. That would go for writing, fanart, and whatever else. I'm not putting doujinshi in there since it is a medium for a profit.

But everyone has a different reason for liking it, but I guess the most common would be "because it's hotter and better than a man with a woman!".

From my experience, as a shounen-ai fan (literal meaning: Boy's Love, which focuses more on the romantic side of the relationship. Compare that to Yaoi - No climax, no point, no meaning - which focuses mainly on the smuttier side.), I prefer it because of the drama, the story, the character development, and the romance rather than "Hey, you're a hot guy! Let's have sex!" In all honesty, I've read (I prefer writing over anything else) some stories that are amazingly written dealing with all that I look for without going straight into sex. Actually some of my favorites go nowhere near the option.

But that's off the subject.

Basically, I see the yaoi / shounen-ai fanbase as more open than yuri / shoujo-ai, but the latter is not obsolete in the least bit. It depends on where and what you're looking for. As in, if you want to find so writing about yuri, then that's a pretty small medium and very little exists.

Sorry if I repeated anything, I honestly don't know what everyone is on about with the 'getting off with ink and paper'. XD Think about this, please. If there's something wrong with enjoying drawn characters on a computer screen or paper, is that really all that much different from real people on the computer screen or in a magazine? Granted, they are living people, but you can't touch them, they're still in the same 'ink and paper' medium, and honestly--- who gives a crap? Everyone has different preferences and not everyone 'gets off' with the idea. It's entertainment.

Thank you~ 8D
