I'm thinking of getting into this series but couldn't find the first one in any of the few shops I looked in. So i'm just wondering if i should continue with my "Quest" so to speak.

I dont think its rare at all and I thought Namco put out enough copies of the game. Didnt it get Greatest hits? I dont know.
And yes you should continue with your quest to find it, if you cant find it physically you should order it online, its worth it. Its the best of the three and you would miss out on a great game if you desist.

I was in America for a week and I bought it... So I would assume I was either lucky or it isn't that rare... but this was a year ago I guess.
If you start from Episode 1 then yes, this is a series you'll want to get into and you will be rewarded nicely. If you can survive episode 2 that is.
I've only played a couple of hours of Episode 1 myself, but I've seen the majority of the story and read up on it. Story-wise it's brilliant and I have never heard much bad about the gameplay. It is just generally a really good game...
Now Episode II is where you'll have to grit your teeth. Not a terrible game by any standards but due to a huge amount of changes and a different (and much less interesting) battle system, it was only half the game it should have been. As always, it's got story on it's side, but gameplay isn't that great.
Episode III however goes back to being a really awesome game. The battle system is improved A LOT, there was a graphics change and they finally got the characters looking good. There are some things in it that could have done with improvement, but the same could be said about any game.
Xenosaga is one of my favourite series, I've only played episode II and III (soon to add episode I, as well as the DS game) and I'm in love.

It's not rare at all. Theres soo much used ones for like,7.99 where I live in just one shop. Or you can get it new for 20 bucks. It's a damn good game. Like Raz said, if you can't find it in stores, get it online. Gamestop.com has plenty used ones.

Yeah, I found the first at EBGames for $7.99, and the second for about $12. It's not all that rare to find where I live. But yeah, I recomend that you keep up the search as this series is definitely one of the best I've played. Take everyone else's advice and just get it online if you can't find it elsewhere^_^

Heh, yes I think you were just unlucky. Its like any greatest hit game, you can generally find it in any game store or just a place that sells a good amount of video games. But if you really cant find it anywhere where you live I'd try amazon or ebay, both probably sell it for very cheap and in good condition as long as you choose wisely. As with amazon, choose the used one with the highest star, usually the first. But that's probably pretty obvious.
Definitely try and get that and the other ones, an excellent series. Hell I'd shoot for Xenogears, the greatest game of all time but...that one actually is getting rare. Hope and pray for a ten year anniversary release. Probably not. *sigh*

Xenosaga is sold at my local Gamestop at about $12.99 with all the copies they have being Pre-Greatest Hits, and there's like 7 or 8 of them all the time.
