I just come across the full E3 trailer for Lost Odyssey, the game looks beautiful and so far i'm loving the idea and theme behind the game, and i'm also really excited to play a "new gen" rpg with a good old traditional but fun looking turn based battle system.

With this and all the other fantastic looking Japanese and Western RPG's due out this year(Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect etc) its the first time i've been genuinely excited for a large list of 360 games at around the same time, MS are doing a pretty good job of keeping my money in their pockets this year lol!

Anyway enough babbling from me here is the TRAILER
LunarMaster
I wasn't exactly hyped for this game, but these new trailers make me want it. It seems to have a PSX era look to it. Still not sure how the battle system will play out, but it seems to resemble the Final Fantasy battle system quite a bit.

That's exactly what I think too, it definitely looks like a very traditional Japanese RPG and that is what is getting me hyped for the game, many people are considering a sort of spiritual successor to the Final Fantasy of old but obviously that remains to be seen, I can't help but be excited though.
Athrun
The trailer looks promising, and the game looks very much like a traditional rpg now, and I like that. The theme of the game and the setting looks as epic as it should be. However I'm still haunted by the simple, stale and dull battle system I saw before, but that wasn't all there was to it since it looked much better in boss battles, so I don't know what to say about it until I see it in action again later. But the game looks much better than before and I was impressed by the trailer.
Hoodman
Agreed I'm worried about that stale battle system too as it really turned me off from remotely even caring about Lost Odyssey. But this trailer seem to have improved things and the battles actually look like they might be quicker, plus now theres a lot more color than there was in the battle seen before.
cloudycat
This will probably be one of the last times I can post on here for a while with my girl about to give birth any day now, but I came across an interesting 15 minute gameplay presentation for LO and I'm still hyped for this game, old school battle system and all. Anyway here is that presentation -

I just read om Kotaku that the game will be on 4 discs. It seems that during the battles it will contain CG movies instead of Real-Time because they felt that it was easier to do it that way.

Wow, a 32 GB game huh? Well I watched the trailer. The game looks moe interesting. I don't think the battles look as stale as they did in the first trailer though. They worked on that by throwing in some interaction and the characters look more natural even when they stand still before attacking now. But it does feel like the battles are a bit slow paced.
But that asside it's looking to be an intersting rpg. Definitely something X360 owners should look into.

Is there even that big of a difference between the CG and in game models for the characters? I would have thought that doing everything from the engine would be easier and at the same time save space. The only thing that bugs me is that there are random encounters which in my opinion is a ancient mechanic in this generation of hardware. Back then it was used because of hardware limitations, but with such powerful hardware why don't they just get rid of random encounters like they did with Blue Dragon, it seems like a step back.

Don't get me wrong I love playing older RPGs that have random encounters, but after playing games like Rogue Galaxy and Final Fantasy XII exploration becomes tedious with random encounters. It just makes more sense to be able to see your enemies on screen on the same field instead of having an intrusive transition screen pop up to go into battle.

32 gigs...ha, wow that'll be quite the project for pirates to download/play. laugh.gif
The Evil Dead
Not really... We get 1.6gb down here and my roommate has newsgroups.

Of course there's plenty of newbs who use their shite comcast 2mbps connection to pirate. How I pity them. tongue.gif

I do LOL at the four discs... Maybe DVD won't be enough for this generation after all.

I called this before.
Metal Gear Solid 4 for Xbox 360, 18 disc box set.

Just wait and see.
Mushroom
Some of my favourite rpgs are on 4 discs, so its not a big deal to me. In fact, its an encouraging sign, that they've really went for it.

I've been following LO, and although I'll miss out on some of the newer FFs on ps3, games like this make me look forward to playing rpgs on the 360. Plus, there are so many rpgs abandoning turn-baed, that i'm glad this game has the battlesystem it has, to mix things up a bit.

Basically, bring it on!
cloudycat
Oh what a shock and travesty, some gamers have to get their fat lazy asses off the couch to change the disc. I love the fact that it's on four discs because in agreement to the above comment to me, it shows they've put a lot effort into the game and the CG cut-scenes, so bring it on.

XD i meant to say, I downloaded that 15min presentation you put up above, and it looks pretty awesome, I definetely think this game could be really awesome. I thoughtthe vid would likely be made up of stuff we'd seen before, but I had seen alot of that. I like how boxes appear with their faces as they speak and you travel. Works alot better than the chatting in ToS, and it means you can keep going at a good pace. Is this still definetely due before x-mas? Or is that just for Japan? I'd really like to be able to pick it up alongside my 360.

Bad news, it was originally planned as a worldwide release before Christmas but it's been delayed for a European and US release until February, the Japanese are still getting it as planned though. I don't mind too much, I'll be distracted enough by Mass Effect over the silly season and when you think about it a two month wait is a damn sight better than what we are used to with the PS2 RPGs which can take anything up to a year to get released in the West.
Mushroom
haha XD damn, thats annoying, but its not killer or anything. Its actually kind of cool, since there's kind of waves of games comnig in with a few mnoths between each wave for money saving. When i get my 360 in december there'll be halo 3, bioshock, blue dragon, assassin's creed, overlord, mass effect and thats just naming a few off the top of my head that i want XD come feb/early 2008 there'll be lost odyssesy, devil may cry 4, and more. So yea, it's not killer. I like the fact more developers seem to be pushing for worldwide simulteneous releases of games, making me feel more confident as a british gamer XD LO and blue dragon are made by the same people right?

- Something cool I read about this game: "Lost Odyssey will follow in Blue Dragon's footsteps in another way as well. The team plans to ship the game with multiple language options, including English and Japanese. However, the voice animations will be synched to English on all versions, including the Japanese release. Sakaguchi explained that the Japanese are used to having voices not match up to lips because of all of the western movies that have made their way to Japan and that he wanted to show the English speaking audience his appreciation of their support."

- from ign.

I think thats pretty sweet happy.gif

Double post~! I rarely do, but since I have some really info to update this thread with, I'll just go with it.

Gamespot, has stuck a new impression up from TGS, and here's some of what it has to say:

QUOTE
More details of the combat system were revealed in this latest look at the game, including the precision aiming system. In the game's menu, you can equip onto each character one of around 150 combat rings that you'll be able to find around the game world. These rings have a variety of power levels and elemental affinities. If a character is wielding a fire-based weapon, you can match him or her up with a fire-based combat ring for a little extra oomph. During combat, you can use these rings by holding the right trigger while attacking. If you do so, you'll see two large rings appear on the screen, the larger of which will quickly shrink to overlap with the smaller. If you let go of the switch just as the two rings overlap, you'll be able to execute a more powerful attack than you normally would.

This sounds awesome. 150? Wow, thats alot, and this adds a completely new element to the tradition turn based system. Some people are quick to rag on it; I myself like turnbased, but this is a cool addition to keep things fresh, and keep the player engaged. I have no idea if this is anything like the ring thing you get in Shadow Hearts, but I like the idea, and if there are that many, I bet some will be super-secret.

QUOTE
Another new system involves the manner in which powerful characters can protect the weaker party members. As in other RPGs, this is represented by having the powerful melee characters stand in front of the weaker magicians and ranged characters. However, there's also a meter in the upper right-hand corner of the screen that indicates how well the forward characters are protecting the rear guard, which apparently goes up as the forward characters take and deal damage, and drops as the rear characters take damage. It's unclear precisely how the system works, but it seems that the higher the meter goes, the more effective the protection is, which presumably lessens the damage the weaker characters take. Sakaguchi claims that this system is inspired by the MMORPG concept of tanking, wherein heavily armored characters attempt to take damage and distract enemies from weaker characters.

Tanking~! This sounds like a cool idea. I wonder if there'll be any rewards/penalties for the bar going really high or zeroing? Outside of damage that is. Again, it looks like efforts are being many to keep the gameplay fresh and interesting, and at a point where you can't/won't want to just bash A until the battle is over with.

The update also mentioned the previously posted info on the lipsynching, and mentions a little scene that takes place with the party, so its worth checking out the link here: http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/lostody...p;mode=previews
cloudycat
Gameplay and cinema montage from Japan - it's the first vid dated December 6th.

Apparently the game scored well in Famitsu Magazine too, only to lose a few points for lip-syncing issues due to the game being designed only to be synced with the English version in mind.

This is looking amazing and it's easily one of my most anticpated games this year. With a bit of luck we'll get a region free release with Lost Odyssey since it's out in the US about a month before Europe gets it.

i pre-ordered this game for three reasons:
1> apparently, by pre-ordering it, i can get a free 'in-game weapon and bonus mission.' not sure how they'll do that but whatever.
2> i only have a half-dozen 360 games. so may as well add another to my small library.
3> Mercenaries 2: World Inflame was delayed to August, so now i don't have many games coming in.

all in all, i'm intrigued... an immortal amnesiac- i wonder if the story will flipflop between his many adventures.
Mushroom
Actually its out only just over two weeks later over here man ^^ save yourself the cash on importing if you didn't know haha, as far as I know its in the uk on the 29th of Feb. This definetely isn't one of my most anticipated games or anything (MGS, Killzone 2, resistance 2) but I've definetely enjoyed everything i've seen on it and it looks to be a very solid rpg which imo both the next-gen consoles need right now, so this is a big plus towards the 360 right now. I'll probably wait a few weeks to let the price drop and then grab it just after my birthday in march, i have plans to do a big game shop then. Do let me know your thoughts though guys ^^

EDIT: and yea Sigs, the main plot will cover his relevent past in regards to the game, and there's also going to be an ongoing sidequest where you can find "dreams" which will fill in other cool parts of his past. Its a great oidea really, it has the potential to throw us a very big curveball at some point, which is always nice.

Not as samll as my PS3 library I've only got one game for it. Although I'm planning to grab DMC4(since it allows a partial HDD install) and Uncharted.

I hate to piss you off even more but there's a chance that Mercs 2 won't get released until 2009
http://www.destructoid.com/mercenaries-2-c...her-67921.phtml

It's a shame about Mercenaries 2 I've been looking forward to that quite a bit more so than GTA IV. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait though I just hate f**king waiting. I'll have to get my sandbox fix with GTA IV until then and hopefully Just Cause 2 won't be long either since that's looking promising.

Two weeks? Cool I can live with that smile.gif Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this game I just hope it lives up to my expectations. I'm sure it will especially with calibre of developers behind it. I know its apparently got a few bugs in the Jap version but they can be easily ironed out in future updates and hell I liked Blue Dragon as old school as it is, but this is more of what I am expecting from Mistwalker.
Mushroom
I can't say i've got to blue dragon yet, but i am looking forward to it despite its art direction ( not a big fan of the dragon all look myself). Mistwalker are a very promising studio though. Unfortunately I did hear news of ASH being panned in Japan which is worrying to think of how it ould be received over here, but i've only heard positive in regards to lost odyssey and al lthe news sounds very good.

On a completely unrelated note, go for uncharted man, you won't be disappointed ^^ its honestly one of the best action games i've ever had the pleasure of playing, and I'm already waiting on the sequel. Unless it really goes against the type of game you normally like, I think you would love it.

yea, all these constant delays are starting to irk me... fix all the damn bugs before you announce a 'release date' i pre-ordered Mercs 2 last October. ah well, i'll put the money i had stored for it to something else.
[Should I mention i don't give a rat's ass about GTAIV? probably not...]

as for Blue Dragon, meh... being a MegaTen fan, the whole "shadow monsters" thing just screams "We ripped Persona!" plus, i hated the 'epitome of mediocrity' Draggin'on Quest VIII-and the art style reflects that. i want to play good games. not generic crap.

meh... Lost Odyssey in Feb. Dark Sector in March. Infinite Undiscovery sometime in the summer.
Mercenaries 2 when-the-F***-ever... i wonder if Dynamite Entertainment will make another Mercenaries mini

maybe i'll pick up Condemned 2 if it comes with bonus pre-order goodies.

Well if ASH bombs then Mistwalker can just blame Racjin who were apparently the actual developers of that particular game.

I'd say Blue Dragon is worth a look if you find it cheap like I did. The art direction isn't my cup of tea either but it has grown on me and Nobuo Uematsu's music is easily recognisable.

Yeah, I like action games so I'll have to pick it up and the visuals look stunning. I've just been short for time lately and I've been bogged down by a HUGE back catalogue of games.

I just noticed a Lost Odyssey up interview on RPGamer I thought some of you may interested in reading it

http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/xbox2/l...ointerview.html

The part of the interview that caught my attention was this:
QUOTE
Similar to many Japanese traditional role-playing games, the combat in "Lost Odyssey" is turn-based. But we wanted to take it a step farther, so we’ve inserted the Aim Ring System. When a party member equipped with an enhancement ring attacks, instead of just letting the attack play out cinematically, the player actually can inflict varying amounts of damage by using the aim-ring to time a "Perfect," "Good" or "Bad" attack. It adds a real-time element that few games in the genre have.

It's nice to see the battle system from Nautilus' (Shadow Hearts) team carry over a bit on to this title it's to be expected since most of the team ended up in Mistwalker developing this game.

It's also recieving generally good reviews especially for the story, with it's criticisms being that it can be too traditional personally for me that's NOT a criticism but a bonus and it suffers from the odd frame rate issue and screen tearing which after playing Mass Effect(damn Microsoft and their core console) will probably not be all that noticeable.
LunarMaster
I put in my pre-order yesterday smile.gif It comes out on 12th here in the States.
Mushroom
I definetely have to agree on the point about traditional battles. While alot of rpgs are moving on from the turnbased and I personally probably the other various ways of battle more, I do love a traditional rpg and there's something nostalgically endearing about turnbased. AS as mentioned, thats really the only criticisms this game is getting - being traditional in some of its methods, which imo is nothing to get worked over, and its not a negative. That said, I can generally add a point onto those reviews for m lack of problem with turnbased, and that puts LO in the area of a sweet 9 - I very much want this XD I'll be interested in the sales though. I just don't ge tthe feeling its going to do very well. Fingers crossed though, they do have "from the creators of FF" on the front XD
Noir
I looked into this. It has convinced me to get a 360 instead of a PS3.
Mushroom
*shakes head* Nono, it should convince you that both are necessary XD
The Evil Dead
I'm going to end up buying it probably at the end of the month along with DMC 4 for my PS3. RPG's are good, TED likes to buy them.
Noir
I read that it is 4 disks, was I misinformed or is this game going to be looong?
LunarMaster
From what I read it takes 35-50 hours to complete. So it averages out to around 10 hours a disk. My guess is that there are ton of HD movie clips so they need the extra discs to hold them.
Noir
Damn, when I get into a game I log 14 hours a day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (multitasking, lol). Let's hope for my sake that it's fun to replay.
The Evil Dead
Oh yeah I forgot about that.

DVD's are gonna last my ass.
Hoodman
I hate the critics sometimes always hating on that classic turn-based style that I love.
cloudycat
Well you lucky Yanks get this game tommorrow three weeks before the EU but what the hell I'm sure I can wait I have DMC4 and Uncharted to keep me distracted.

Anyway here's another trailer showing off one of the cities in the game.

cry.gif I want this game so bad tomorrow but I don't have the money until the end of the month.

Looks very impressive, been lookin' into it a bit more and I doubt it's going to disappoint. Please be a huge success so Microsoft sees the sales power of the RPG.
Sigs Minock
gonna get my copy tomorrow, though i am a little busying play Suikoden V.
Verner
Has anyone gotten it yet? How is it?
LunarMaster
To put simply... It's awesome. This has one the most emotionally rich and mature stories I've ever seen in an RPG. I'll post further impression once I finish Disc 1. Oh and I found out why it has so many discs. It turns out that the game comes packaged in 5 languages. The packaging is kind of lacking (it's just packed in like Blue Dragon except one of the discs comes in a paper sleeve). I wish they would have used the same package they used in Asia.
Verner
A coworker of mine convinced me to buy it, so I snagged myself the last copy in town. I seriously had to call every store that carries games. =/

I'll post up my thoughts on it later tonight. =D
Exire
Seems to show that the ratings aren't everything. I think it still looks cool, seems like its selling very well. I may have to wait before I get it on my PS3. Not that it matters, I don't have the money anyway.

Gamespot

EDIT (again): By the way, about the fairly popular trailer seen both online and on TV...who does that song that plays? I've heard it somewhere else but I can't put my finger on it. I'd really like to know what that song is, if anyone has a clue, let me know please. >_<

That's strange, I thought I heard someone talking about it being on the PS3, I swore I saw something about it being on the PS3 as well. Odd, I obviously was wrong. That really sucks, I was looking forward to it. Damn.

Microsoft payed for that game so I doubt it will ever see the light of day on the PS3. Well unless ICO goes to 360.

I'm not too far into the game, still in Uhra, but I LOVE the dream sequences. I realize it's more reading, but seeing into Kaim's past like that is a great way to tell his story.

Also the 6 dreams I've unlocked so far all got to me. I don't know why I'm enjoying them so much, maybe because I've been in a weird reading mood, but I love the way this game tells the story of Kaim. I'll have to keep playing, if only just to see where the story goes.
Sigs Minock
I'm currently in Numara, i just met Cooke and Mack and the subsequent story twist
<spoiler: Lirum, Kaim's daughter, survives the fall off the cliff in Kaim's dreams- and is mother to Cooke and Mack. Too bad she's very ill and dies shortly after reuniting with Kaim. sad.gif>

I like the voices, and it took me a while to recognize Seth's voice-actor [Tara Strong] but I recognized Cooke's voice-actor [Kath Soucie].

Does anybody know if i can input the 'bonus material' code and get the extra mission and in-game weapon when i want, or just at the beginning of the game?

You can do it whenever you want. As soon as you put in the code, you get the accessory that gives you a GODLY skill. To get the dream, you have to go back to Uhra, and play the piano at the pub, I believe. I'm not sure, since I haven't gotten the dream yet, but I did get the accessory.

Funny thing though, Japan just got it as DLC, so if you have a Japanese account, download it, and it'll work on all versions. I didn't preorder it, but that was the way I got the stuff. =)
Sigs Minock
one thing: i need XBL to download the stuff, because that's how i input the code to get the weapon and side-mission. thanks though.
