Trailer

The story sounds interesting. It seems that Snake being injected with the first generation nanamochine Foxdie might actually work in his favor somehow in the game. He seems to be somewhat unaffected by whatever it is that affects everyone else in the trailer. And the game seems to take place in 2014. Naomi mentions injecting Snake with Foxdie 9 years ago during Shadow Moses, which took place in 2005 in the game.
And Raiden's body seems to be more machine than human this time arround judging by his battle with Vamp at the end of the trailer.

mmmm MGS4......

but seriously, this game is about to be amazing, maybe even to the point that I will save money for a PS3
AnimePaul
Very nice trailer indeed. From what the trailer has shown Snake doesn't have the stamina he once had and I wonder if that will be a factor in the game, like Snake can't run for long periods time or he'll start gasping and slow down.

Raiden seems to have become a complete cyborg from the looks of it. Think Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, who is also a complete cyborg. She can swap out of different bodies and replace damaged limbs.

Did anyone notice the soldier that was with Meryl who seemed to be the only soldier not affected by Foxdie? I wonder who it is, maybe its Raiden?

I think it is a "Johnny" =P.
There is a Johnny in every game and always has a balaclava, might be another Johnny =P.

Anyhoo, the trailer is great =D. Great action and I am looking forward to this title.

Imagine it and then his suceptibablilty to colds and diarrhea is what gives him immunity to the Foxdie. In anycase great trailer, the sole reason why I'm getting a PS3, right next DMC 4 (Though I can get a 360 fo r that).

Its most likely not Johnny because if you watch closely there is some hair sticking out from under his mask which is colored white. It could possibly be Raiden, since he is the only known and living character with white hair, before he went cyborg or a completely different character. A Johnny appearances is very likely and I would be surprised if he wasn't in MGS4 in some shape or form. Johnny is like a trademark with the Metal Gear Solid series as Chocobos are to Final Fantasy games.

Well if you listen closely to the conversation, you hear one of the soldiers call the masked character "Johnathan". So my presumption would be that he is a "Johnny" plus we don't know if this "Johnny" might have white hair or not, we only think of him as an enemy soldier who suffers from genetic diarrhea (cuz it runs in your "jeans") problems as well as a succeptibility to colds.

I saw that part differently. I thought the masked soldier that wasn't infected by FoxDie was the one calling the soldier, who was infected by FoxDie and on the ground in pain, Johnathan not the other way around. All the other soldiers including Meryl were in pain and screaming when they were infected and hardly had the time to be calling out someones names in such a calm voice. Plus, it would be a high probability that Raiden would join Foxhound. I also thought the voice sounded like Raiden's too.

I just saw the video, and took your view on it in mind. I see reason in your assumption that it is Raiden. Though we really can't be too sure, I can't wait to play this game.

I wish instead of making so much separate threads and announcements that everyone would just post them in my E3 thread. Though I guess this makes it a lot easier for people to be educated.

The trailer was awesome, I'm just mad it wasn't actually gameplay.

Just random speculation on my part, plus the current Johnny living in the time-line seems to be a decent person, I mean he did let Emma through that crossway. He's just there at the wrong place at the wrong time, so who says he wouldn't be working with Meryl. Though the thought of it is hilarious, considering she did kick his ass and stole his clothes.

Well he had to have some skill in order to be in Liquid's genome army on Shadow Moses. i mean they wouldn't just pick some moron who would fire into open air (Seal Team 6 anyone?). In anycase, we'll just have to wait for the game and find out.

I liked the trailer, but I still don't get what's the deal with Raiden being a cyborg ninja now. Cyborgs can't have babies. Though I read somewhere that Raiden has some disease that destroyed his body, so he has white blood powering his robot suit.

That trailer was feeling like an episode of a long running Sci Fi channel TV show, though.

They probably turned Raiden into a cyborg because people were complaining about how he looks like a girl and was a wimp. They turned him into a cyborg so you can be a badass and far the reception of this new Raiden has been good.
Denim
I must've been the only one to like the original Raiden. Say whatever you like, but to me he always made the impression of being better than Snake. 23 Metal Gears, for chrissakes. 23 metal gears!

And he was a flawed character that didn't reek badasserry, while still kicking enormous amounts of ass with moves, that while many would think girly because of the amount of gymnastics needed to perform them like he does, that take a lot of skill to do. Snake did rolls anyone can do.

Turning Raiden into a badass to appease fans is lame.
Though hopefully he's still gonna have a roughly similar personality.

Great news for everyone who is excited about MGS4. Kojima demonstrated MGS4 in Japan yesterday and the footage has been released.

Here it is: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22703.html
HD Version: http://www.gamersyde.com/leech_4139_1_en.html

I've watched it and it is awesome a real evolution of the MGS formula. The options in Snakes movements are great and the Octo-Cam is a great addition. You can play the entire game in FPS, over the shoulder view ala Resident Evil 4 or regular third person view like in MGS3 Subsistence with rotateable camera. There are new CQC attacks like being able to hold a enemy up and then searching him for items or probably the most used one would be crotch grabbing an enemy which causes him to be knocked out cold. The environment is intense like it is suppose to be in the midst of a battlefield. You just have to watch it to appreciate the level of detail Kojima has put into this game. There are still a lot of stuff I haven't mentioned so go watch the video. NOW!

Metal Gear Online for MGS4 was also announced with some details.
QUOTE (Gamespot.com)
The online title, which will shortly be going into closed beta with a select team of 3,000 Japanese beta testers, was one of a series of announcements that the company chose to make at its own dedicated event--as opposed to at this year's E3, where Konami caused a stir with its 15-minute press conference.

The official recruiting period for the open beta will be from July 24 to August 6, and the actual beta testing will run from August 7 to September 3. So far the open beta is also Japanese-only, although Kojima Productions assistant producer Ryan Payton stated that he would like to see the beta go international--but as yet has no official announcements.

The game will be a kind of hide-and-seek for up to 16 players at a time, and is called a "strategic multiplayer experience." It will feature the SOP system, which allows players to keep track of their teammates via nanomachines injected into their bloodstream. The nanomachines allow them to see where the rest of their team are, their condition, which way they are aiming, and their range of sight. Enemy soldiers can also be injected with nanomachines, which will enable the other team to then keep track of their movements.

Metal Gear Online will also feature playable characters and environments from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and is slated as a PS3 exclusive.

MGS4 In depth interview: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22922.html

I forgot to comment on the E3 demonstration before. It was very impressive. The thing I noticed first was that the controls seemed less restrictive. Snake can move arround a lot more smoothly, and it definitely showed. Lock on target while moving arround the enemy, rolling arround while flat on the ground to instantly pull up your gun and fire at a target behind you, throw granades over your head and moving in a first person perspective. One thing I liked was using the Sixaxis to peak arround corners and shaking it to reset the Octocam.

Everything looks like it's been taken one step further. Holding up enemies and checking them for items was a logical step up. The return of the dirty magazines was interesting too. I wouldn't have thought of being able to flip through the pages like that. (Maybe you need to flip to a guy for certain enemies like Raikov.) The most interesting thing I think is that you can chose who you want to support and ally yourself with, or just not ally yourself with anyone. And the graphics were no less amazing, if not more, as expected from a MGS game. Especially when seeing the explosions and the effects on buildings and surrounding areas. I'm hyped up about seeing what else they're bringing to the game.
Pesmerga
The gameplay looks very interesting and it shows a lot of improvements over the gameplay as well as the graphics.
Kojima is definitly using his magic again and from what has shown us so far, it is going to be a fantastic game.
Rhadamanthus
I am blown away, once again, at the attention to detail of the smallest things. The controls look top notch really, and I can't wait to play.

It does seem sort of the same, but different, expanded, and just lovely.
Denim
I'm disappointed in the camera choices, though. I mean, FPS mode might be useful, over the shoulder is just unnecessary with Subsistance camera, and it doesn't have the traditional MGS top down view which made the game so much more playable. The only times I toggled on the Subsistance camera playing MGS3 is in a firefight, which I avoided anyway. Subsistance camera nearly destroyed Portable Ops for me.

But I'll live. The game looks gorgeous, and maybe the RE4 camera can still work out.

Some bosses from MGS 4 have been revealed.

Screaming Mantis, Crying Wolf, Raging Raven and Laughing Octopus.
All of them are voiced by female voice actors.

Here are some more screens:

Looks like the ones who bombed this area in the trailer may have been Raging Raven and Screaming Mantis.

I'm kind of hoping that those characters aren't actual bosses, but more of mini-bosses. For some reason, I was expecting the bosses to be more along the lines of bosses that were in previous metal gear games, such as vamp as well as others, but I realize there probably aren't enough surviving villains to be a full team of bosses. The reason I say this is that, since this is the final MGS title, that there it would be this epic "all storylines must end" kind of thing where there are epic battles with all the villains who aren't dead yet, I feel like the stuff I'm looking for in bosses are still going to be in the game though, so this is still a good update.

Another thing worth mentioning is that it looks like Laughing Octopus (the one with the many arms (not tentacles, arms) I'm assuming) is holding puppets of what appears to be Psycho Mantis and....The Sorrow maybe? This is probably just a little.... reference I guess in the game and not really related to the plot at all.

That's Screaming Mantis. Laughing Octopus has tentacles.

They're probably real bosses since the site refers to them that way.
Well most old villains are dead, so of course there's going to be a bunch of new ones. Using exoskeletons is nothing new but this is the first time there are more than two in one game. (Olga and Solidus in MGS 2) Unless they are actually robots, but I doubt it.

Oh, I just didn't which was which in terms of Octopus and Mantis, but I just assumed that because Laughing Octopus's head thingy looks kind of like an insect like head, but now that I think about it, it makes sense.

Anyway, I realize most of the villains are dead, but it seems that Big Boss is not dead (from some earlier stuff about MGS4) but I think the thing I don't really like about these four being bosses is that in the other games, you could see the bosses faces, which kind of added to their personalities for me I guess. This kind of seems like a very minor complaint, but something just doesn't sit right with me that I can't see any one of their faces (because of the exoskeleton obviously) which I think might be that them being masked makes it kind of...impersonal. I realize that at some points they will probably show their faces, but I also don't want my motivation for beating them to be being able to see their faces, but I doubt that would happen. I'm sure this will work out though, it worked to an extent in FFXII (Judge Magisters) so I'm sure its not all how it seems to be.

Yeah I know what you mean, but lets not jump ahead of ourselves here. These are only a few preview pictures of the bosses. The bosses in the game haven't been introduced yet. Besides, I think that seeing artwork of the bosses like in the past doesn't neccisarily tell you more about them than seeing their exosceleton type. In that way it's a bit more personal to see their abilities which is what really matters the most rather than just their face.
But like I said, these are just a few pictures Konami released. The characters will be properly introduced in the game. They don't show everything in promotional updates naturally. They also hid Snake, Raiden, Ninja and Ninja in MGS'2 faces from us in the beginning.

But that Wolf boss, the shape of the legs don't look very human, so I'm not if that one might actually be a robot or something.
Grahf
Well, I just watched the trailer that featured these bosses (I couldn't find one on the page Athrun posted, I watched it here)

I found this to show more about what kinds of powers they all have, although I must admit that I'm not too fond of their names being as literal as they are, such as Raging Raven constantly saying "Rage" (it reminds me all too much of pokemon, who for some reason constantly say their names) I did however think that it was cool how laughing octopus was laughing, because that made her/it seem on the insane side. Another thing I noticed is that it appears that Screaming Mantis controlled them all, which I guess would make her/it the leader of the 4. I guess it kind of combines the bosses of MGS1 with animal names with the emotion kind of theme in MGS3.

Nice trailer. I agree that Raging Raven shouting rage was kinda silly, but the others seemed cool enough. Laughing Octopus does indeed seem "slightly" on the insane side, but like Athrun said (in Live Chat, I think), she looks like Medusa (also known for her petrifying powers, though I doubt Laughing Octopus shares those). Crying Wolf appears inhuman (due to its shape), but I guess a person could fit in there in horizontal position (with the legs not necessarily located in the machine's mechanical legs). Either way, they seem like decent bosses to me and will probably make for great battles. =)
Athrun
Cool movie. This made their abilities and personalities more clear. But you say you saw Screaming Mantis controlling the others? I didn't notice that. What time on the trailer should I pay attention to it?
But regarding that, the person Screaming Mantis controlled was only being controlled physically and was trying to break free. The other three bosses seem like they want to do this anyway so I don't see a reason for Screaming Mantis to controll them. Anyway, they seem like pretty cool bosses. I like the part about them losing their human side to war.

Right between around 3:00-3:30 in, it seems like Screaming Mantis is moving her/it's arm, and causes Raging Raven, Laughing Octopus, and Crying Wolf to start coming back, but she may have just as easily been calling them back, but the reason I don't think this is is that she moves her arm, doesn't make a noise, and then Raging Raven, whos facing the other way, activates her jet pack and starts to fly, and the others soon start to follow.
Pesmerga
Fantastic movie. I am very curious in these bosses. MGS3 already had splendid bosses that had their own background and I hope that this might be the case again in MGS4.

I wonder if any of the bosses have anything to do with previous MGS games, for example Screaming Mantis.
Raging Raven was just annoying. His/her voice was good, but the constant "RAGE!" was just overdone.

Speaking of Mantis controlling. When I see him, I immediatly think of Psycho Mantis from MGS1 (obviously), he had mind manipulating power and was able to control other people, or tell them things via kinetic powers. This could be the case again.

These character models are indeed very artistic and unique (except maybe Laughing Octopus; she's reminiscent of Doctor Octopus. Then again, it's too early to tell for sure.). Only someone like Kojima could have come up with such astounding characters.

Twould be pretty fun fighting them all at the same time!... Ok it probably wouldn't be, but they all look pretty cool - very high tech. I really can't wait for this game, I just hope its a little longer than the previous ones!

I think its just awesome the fact they have the same animal avatars as the foxhound had in mgs1, thats something very cool about that. Of course, the video was awesome as well, but really I wanna see gameplay now. Still hoping this goes to 360, its the one game that makes me wish i was getting a ps3, but thats very unlikely now, my purchasing a 360is pretty much a lock, and I'm not buying both.

TGS 2007: Metal Gear Online Starts Off Free
Konami's upcoming MGS shoot-em-up will come packaged with MGS4.
by IGN Staff

September 19, 2007 - Clearing up some confusion regarding the release of Metal Gear Online -- the upcoming networked multiplayer game set in the Metal Gear universe -- Hideo Kojima and Konami officially set firm its release plans for the game at a TGS conference held yesterday in Japan.

Metal Gear Online will in fact be bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4, as originally planned way back when the mode was announced. The confusion on this point came up when Konami independently announced the game at a special Konami Metal Gear conference held a few days after E3 2007. Previously, Metal Gear Online was assumed to be part of the overall Metal Gear Solid 4 release (as in MGS3: Subsistence), but the press conference presentation hinted that it would be its own product, with perhaps its own pricing structure and release date. There were also rumors about the possibility of Metal Gear Online being a PlayStation Network downloadable title.

Those questions are settled (at least for now -- the possibility of a PSN version of MGO outside of MGS4 seem quite possible), as Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will come bundled with the Metal Gear Online Starter Pack. Exactly what is in that Starter Pack (and what kind of additional content will be available beyond the Starter Pack, and when it will be available) was not announced at the event. Online charges (if any) were also not discussed.

Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Metal Gear Online Starter Pack are together planned for a worldwide release in 2008.

This trailer blew me away. I can't wait to see more from the game. They're definitely not holding back in this game. It's going to end the story in a big way.

They updated the English site of Kojima Productions which has the same trailer from the Tokyo Game Show, but with English voice overs this time with subtitles and of course the quality is better. The new trailer for Metal Gear Online is also up on the site as well.

haha, this looks so awesome. I'm praying they make it multiformat. I must know how it all ends! The kid must play some form of part in all this. No idea how, but the kid's so going to turn on someone at a very inoppertune(sp?) time!

Here is how the new codec looks:

You can see it in motion by downloading the clip:

Just a word of caution the file is pretty big like 266MB.

Again a fantastic film. I am sure that the game will be awesome.

No, MGS4 should stay PS3. Go away with your silly Xbox.

XD fans and development costs defy you pes! defy!

Gah, who knows. I'll likely get a ps3 in a few years anyway when the price is considerably lower (£250 for example) and alot more games are out. i can wait....but I may go insane >_<!

Finally watched the trailer, and I agree it looks awesome. I'm a big Naomi fan, so I'm glad to see she'll play a considerable part in the story (I really hope she'll survive D: ). For whatever reason I'm not so thrilled about Meryl's return, even though I like her character. She just didn't leave much of an impression in the trailer. And, uhm... Big Mama? Couldn't she have chosen a less silly code name? xP

Only one real complaint; Liquid has Ocelot's voice, while in MGS2 he had his own voice when he was "awake". I hope Cam Clark will return to voice him at some point in the game as well (I never cared much for Ocelot, so the more he's Liquid, the better =p ).

Fans of the franchise don't buy a Xbox for MGS, that is just stupid.
Development costs, I never heard Konami/Kojima Productions complain about the money.
In an interview Kojima had also said to never release a game on the Xbox again after the failure of MGS2 on the Xbox.

Um, did I say that "Fans of the franchise don't buy a Xbox for MGS"? No. I simply said fans defy you, in that, alot of people who like mgs and have an x-box would like to play it on 360. Not quite sure how you could misinterprete that.

So fordevelopment costs, that was a direct quote. I don't have the article handy, but the president of Konami apparently said to his board that he was considerin gthe possibility of MGS4 on 360 in the future, due to fan demand, and in order to make back development costs. Read into that what you will, he said it, not me.

Fans of the serie have a PSX and a PS2 and will obviously buy a PS3. Any fan that want MGS4 and bought a Xbox didn't just think straight.

This discussion has been going on in a diffirent topic and I know that.
Cloudycat said that the head of Konami can do that and I said no. Kojima is the owner of the project.
Also, Kojima said that he didn't want to release it on the Xbox, no MGS at all. Would head of Konami do it (in case he could (this remains a whole diffirent debate)), Kojima would be pissed and leave the company.

Now, Kojima has a rich history at Konami, considering he was executive there not too long ago, so he has all the respect in the world from everyone in Konami, so I highly doubt it.

Big Mama = Eva (I believe, thats just what I've been told, but it would make sense).

I personally am a huge fan of Ocelot (except in 3, he sucked as a young'un) and while I think different voices for liquid and ocelot would be cool, it kind of solidifies his new name (Liquid Ocelot) as a true combination between the two characters. This game will be truly epic.
