With the game due out within the next 3 months in Japan, I suppose it's time
FFIV DS can stop sharing a thread with FFXII International, eh?
(Previous thread here, made because these two games were announced at the same time: http://www.rpgdreamersforum.com/index.php?showtopic=51937) So let's kick this mofo off with the latest scans:

The first scan we saw, earlier this year

Trailers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHl2lrj_6GQReview: RPG Land Final Fantasy IV DS review (Japanese version)The deal with FF4 DS:
-Full 3D remake
-This game has been released on SNES, PSX, Wonderswan Color, and GBA, but DS will mark its first foray into 3D
-Uses the FFIII DS engine
We don't know yet if anything will be added to the story, but I would not assume so. It's also not yet announced for North America, but really, this is Final Fantasy we're talking about. It's got about a 99.9% chance, especially since Square's got a fresh, excellent English translation from the GBA version sitting in its file cabinet,

UPDATES:
-Thought system:
QUOTE
Another developer chimed in about a new feature within the game. When the player opens the menu, a thought bubble appears expressing the party leader’s feelings at that time in the game. Screens of this system are here:

QUOTE
Through this addition, the developers are expecting players to have greater empathy for the characters, and are encouraging future players to look at the menu with different characters many times throughout the game.
VOICE ACTING:
QUOTE
Of course inside the company, even in the development team there was the argument of whether or not this would break the traditional image of FFIV. But, what with the GBA edition that can be played on DS in addition to the fact it has been ported many times (even for an FF game), we decided to turn a new page.
QUOTE
The journal goes on to list the vocal cast of the Japanese vresion of the game.
Rosa: Yuko Kaida (Dixie Clemets, Rumble Roses).
She gave us the impression of honesty and strength of core.
Kain: Koichi Yamadera (Kaji, Neon Genesis Evangelion).
At one point, he’s sort of like an older brother on which your existence depends. When he becomes your enemy, we want also to see his forceful nature. In addition, he’s one of the most popular characters so the casting relied heavily on your impressions.
Gilbert: Ryo Horikawa (Kou Uraki, Gundam 0083).
Should be delicate. Even though he’s a uselessSpoony Bard, the fact that he perserveres leaves a lovely impression.
Rydia: Noriko Shitaya (Moegi, Naruto).
Performance of the girl was good. You thought that there was some strength to her performance that would work well for when she grows into an adult.
Palom & Porom: Rie Kugimiya (Kagura, Gintama).
We expected her to play the part of just one character, but actually they’re twins so two parts are possible.
Golbez: Takeshi Kaga (host of Iron Chef).
This was one character where we were especially careful (with the even the new logo featuring his image!). First and foremost his ability to show his evil nature as an enemy, but also an actor who can reveal Golbez’s human nature.
Cecil: Shizuma Hidoshima (who?).
Yang: Tesshou Genda (typically replaces Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sly Stallone in Japanese dubs of Western movies).
Edge: Hiroya Ishimaru (Rodimus Convoy, Transformers).
Cid: Ichiro Nagai (Mito, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind).
Fusoya: Banjou Ginga (Captain Blue, Viewtiful Joe).
Tellah: Gorou Naya (Zenigata, Lupin films).

Rosa looks like Quistis with a royal touch... me like! =) Of course, I have no DS and don't plan to get one, but maybe someday I'll get to play this anyway. I think this is the only "older" SNES FF game where I bothered reaching the final boss (but didn't beat him); this was originally known as FFII outside of Japan, right? Either way, if I had a DS I'd probably be interested in getting this. As for now, I'll just stare at the pretty scans.

Ooh, definitely a fan of the visuals. Sticking to the Amano-style artwork for the characters, and they look pretty nice rendered in 3-D. The character sprites are pretty nice-looking as well. Would it be safe to assume that the soundtrack will be redone as well? Interesting that they changed the logo's background image to Golbez. (Did they do that for the FF III DS release? Haven't paid much attention to that one.) I like it, though.
Hm. With these DS releases coming out, I might just have to pick up a DS one day. I was originally only planning on picking up a PSP sometime after I get a job, but a DS is looking pretty good, too, even if just for these re-releases.

*sigh* I have a feeling I’ll be borrowing my sister’s DS for a while sometime in the future, what with all these games coming out =D I still have not played a Final Fantasy that I like, but this one looks really good, in my honest opinion. So far the screens look spiffy and all, can’t wait to see more =) The 3-D renditions look good. I look forward to more info as it comes out =)

I just don't understand why it's DS only, especially with all the new games coming out for PSP, u think they'd centralize their gaming, or at least make it dual consoles.

You kidding? This is probably one of my most anticipated games. I'll probably get the English version as well as the japanese if it comes out. I know it's not a great game but I just love playing it, although the ingame graphics are weak, the FMVs are quite stunning. I'd say that I'd rather the whole game looked like the FMVs but I think a more cartoony style fits the game a bit better... after all, with all the deaths that goes on throughout the game, it would look too depressing if it was shown in ultra-realistic quality.
Oh yeah, and Kudos for Square for actually making Cecil's paladin form actually look pretty cool... I never thought it would be possible.

I ended up forgetting about this game as I didn’t think I’d actually have a DS before it came out. However, now that I do have one, my interest in this game has been reestablished. I’m kind of glad it’s coming out for the DS instead of the PSP purely because of the fact I own a DS and not a PSP. Though, the in-game graphics do look somewhat undesirable, but everything else looks good. Thanks for the update, Bomb.

I do like the Amano artwork however, just was it possible to get the graphics of the characters of FFIV ingame to not look so chibi and look more like FF8 characters? FF3 in chibi was fine, because many people hadn't seen the characters b4. But I want mature looking FF4 characters since they are so the bada**es of FF. Though Cecil looks really cool

Well that's just it, the ART and the CGI Renders look AMAZING, they're SO badass. But the ingame chibi version of characters KILLS it. KILLS IT. There are lots of styles to use (WA3, FF7), that make the characters smaller without having to go to a chibi version of it. This is a TOTAL turnoff from the game.
It's like looking at Legos.

Finally, a first look at the four fiends! Awesome! My only question is, do I wait for it to get translated or buy it in japanese... it's a tough decision, I am seriously that excited about the game. I hope that the Guillotine stays in for the english version, it looked so much coller then just a big black ball almost hitting Rosa.
I can't think what the third picture is about (The black and white one) I know it must be a flashback, but I can't think what it is of. Intriguing.

In somewhat of a surprising revelation, Tokita disclosed to Famitsu that only one-fourth of the original scenario made it into the Super Famicom title! The remake will see some areas fleshed out while others will be cut.
WOO! This looks like they are going all out for this game. This isn't just a 3D version of the game with an extra dungeon, this is going to be a much better version. FFIII DS was disappointing, but looking at the sauce material, it isn't that surprising. This on the other hand... makes me excited.

I like the cel art, but the realistically drawn pictures make Cecil and Rosa look like they were beaten severely with an ugly stick and then given eighties hair styles.
I don't have a DS, donno if I'll ever get one, but this does look fun. I liked the original FFIV (though I hated the amount of grinding needed at the end of the game).

The game shop two blocks away from me just put up a big carboard display for this game, alog with a screen looping that and another trailer for it. They have empty boes p contining the final box art too. I'll have to try and get a pic of the back of the box soon. It's not fascinating, but it's still kinda cool. The display itself gave me a good chill, though, which is uncommon for blatant hype ploys like that.

WOW that came out faster than expected. I'm still hesitant on the chibi-models, but FF4 was a great game, and hopefully a remake like this will give it the proper attention it deserves. I feel like many of these old games got lost within each other because the graphics and music-sound were so similar.
Like, if they could render whole new worlds, enviornments, and play music not as MIDI formats but as real songs, each game would have more individual appeal.

I started playing and it's awesome. The world and the monsters translate so well into the fixed 3D, the voices are pretty nifty, the battles remain fun, and I'm having fun exploring the game fresh to see what's new and what's just remade spiffily.
My only complaint is the stupid Pouchika thing (white block-headed addition shown in earlier scans). What the hell? What does this have to do with anything, and why am I playing Rydia math minigames to make it stronger in return for Potions? That, and we have Namingway as a bunny (and additionally, Mappingway and possibly Leavingway?). I don't understand the point at all.
A few of the additions are legitimately cool, though. I like the map completeness thing, in which you enter a map like a dungeon, and it's got the map on the bottom of the screen and says like "5%" or something. Reach 100% and there are itemsyou can obtain. It's kinda cool--we'll see if I still think it has any place in FF4 a couple gameplay hours from now. The extra dialogue in the menus and the extra scenes definitely add some more characterization -- that's not to say the original lacked much, but now there's more of it. There's also extra backstory on certain characters. I haven't really tested out the Decanto abilities yet (because all I have is Auto Potion), but it seems like they could add something to the game without breaking the original experience.
The way that the opening trailer and all the propaganda has been pimping Yang, Palom and Porom, Gilbert, etc. makes me wonder if this version is going to be like the Advance version where you can get those extra four or five in your party, if you like, at the end.

The reason you've not received what you'd consider a "straight answer," which I'm assuming you'd call a simple yes-or-no response, is because there is not such a response that can be given.
Because, yes: it
*probably* will be, because it's Final Fantasy, and FF4's other versions have done well in the States.
But, Square Enix USA has not officially cofirmed it yet, and there is no official release date announced for the English version. It's a safe assumption that there will be one, but we have literally no idea when it will be--just guesses.
And that's why there is no straight, legitimate answer that can be given. But hey, now you know everything you need to know.

Same as the original Final Fantasy IV and all its incarnations. Save points are in all the same original locations.
Final Fantasy III didn't have save points because the original did not have any save points either.

Hey - thanks for the info. This is pretty much what I expected, but I wanted confirmation.
Bringing it to the US should be a no-brainer. I would go as far as to claim that FFIV is the second most beloved Final Fantasy in the US next to FFVII.
Also, I bet I wouldn't be alone if I suggested that S.E. save their money and forget about using American voice actors. After all, we all know how wonderfully dubbed Anime turns out. English subtitles with Japanese voice acting would be fine, thank you very much.

I wouldn't agree with you. Even though I do not watch too much anime anymore I still find dubbing to be getting better and better to the point where I think it is usually on par to the original Japanese voice actors. And personally, I am more for hearing a language I can understand over one I can not.

-About Pouchika-
Right after you kill the guards after Rydia in Kaipo and she introduces herself, she introduces Pouchika, which is a...I'm not entirely sure. But after that you don't hear much about it. It's a summon, for 50 MP, and when you go to a Fat Chocobo, modifying Pouchika is one of the options. Playing various character minigames raises Pouchika's stats, but so far I've only had Rydia's. Rosa and Kain probably have some, but I haven't been able to get to a Fat Chocobo with them in my party. In this manner, if you were rather masochistic, you could get Pouchika stronger than Bahamut, for however many MP less, but where I am in the game it's a little useless and silly.
Also, when you summon Pouchika, he's more like a FFX summon than a regular summon. You can assign him up to five commands or spells, and then when he's summoned, you use those at will until he dies, I guess.
I think the Fat Chocobo's item storage is obsolete in this game, so instead when Namingway starts offering new stuff to do and then changes his name, the old option goes to the Fat Chocobo. So far he's been Namingway, Mappingway (gives you the ability to clear maps for items), Livingway (a bestiary, I guess), Dabinway? (view old voiced cutscenes again), and Campingway (took all my tents). I just found him again and he's Jammingway and comes with a music player. Woot.
-About FF4DS in general-
One thing that's really impressed me so far (aside from how much of the script I'm actually absorbing) is that the choreography of each scene is almost exactly identical to the SNES version, discounting the graphical differences and camera angles. If reflecting upon the SNES scenes as a cutscene plays, you'll see it all checks out. Yes, this is the same. The same. The same. And it's really cool because of that. No Nomura-like overtheatrics here.
(Also: These are now mostly crossposts from my wife ^^)

A crappy localization and crappy voice acting seem like the only things that even have an outside chance of making the US version disappoint in any way. And the former isn't likely, since they've got a fresh and excellent FF4 Advance English script to work with.

If you've already played the SNES version of Final Fantasy IV and think you'll find the DS remake a breeze, then here's one way to make things tougher (which doesn't involve remixed bosses): try playing it in a different language.
Siliconera's Spencer Yip discovered that the North American version of Final Fantasy IV will ship next week with the French, German, Italian, and Spanish dialog from the European edition included. Accessing any of these is easy -- just change the language setting on the main DS menu. Perfect for anyone in the States who doesn't use English as a first language, or any non-English-speaking Europeans who want a cheap import!
