With that said, the obvious: Don't overpower your characters, don't use other peoples' characters without speaking to them first, don't hog the spotlight, etc etc. Have fun. =]
Darkrock Prison
To the people living on the continent of Viatha in the world of Tyrea, the Darkrock Prison is one of the places that no person in their right mind would ever want to enter. Floating over Anginyu, one of Viatha's technologically robust cities, the prison was rumored to be so heavily guarded that a butterfly could not get in without alarming some sort of security, it housed thirty-eight of the world's most dangerous criminals in its maximum security cells.
Most of them were notorious throughout the world for the atrocity of their crimes, and their trials made international news when held. One such example was the year-long trial of 'Death Vampire', Ludwir Wen Schezarger, who committed a massacre of an entire town among other crimes and managed to escape detection for ten years. But due to a mysterious lack of evidence to give him a death sentence, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and unconditional contribution to the Tyrean Acquisition and Refinement Center (ARC) just like all the others in the prison.
Imagine the shock of the people living in that city when one night, they heard a great explosion originating from the prison. Stunned citizens could only watch as, the prison, horrifically decorated with flames and smoke, suddenly ceased to float and plummeted to the ground. The impact shook the entire city, not unlike being affected by an earthquake, and when the tremors finally stopped, a single shrill noise plunged everyone's mind into sheer fear and panic.
For the second time in history, the Darkrock Prison has been breached.
Tyrea
Tyrea is the fifth of twelve planet in its planetary system, with two moons, Enuin and Elna. There are four known continents, namely Astaroa, Ruciphir, Lirith and Viatha, and three oceans, Arberu, Elthasa and Albetos. Scientists have drawn parallels between Tyrea and Earth, the only planet detected to have life in the faraway Solar System, as both planets have only a single ruling humanoid species. It is believed that the two species evolved together, or are linked in some other way, as they are damn near identical. The only difference one can discern is the auras Tyreans possess, but that is due to the core and the core alone. Unlike Earth, Tyrea has two known pure natural energy sources, liquid Aether and gaseous Hemera, which were discovered within the last century and has been introduced to replaced more traditional (and expensive) fuels. Aether is the commonplace fuel, as Hemera is still a highly volatile and requires extreme precision for every step from extracting to actual energy generating.
Viatha
The country and continent of Viatha lies to the north, with an almost inhabitable cold climate that is shared (to a minor degree) by northern Ruciphir. The fairer skin Viathans used to be hunters and nomads, but they eventually settled down. Led by a monarch, King Eviatha Ceraia VII, the whole of Viatha is ruled in a strict but just manner, with its income coming for fish trade, Aether mining and refining, and most significantly, technological products. In the last five hundred years, the continent has advanced from being where, say, America is now to something more closely resembling Star Wars.
Technology
The edge of technology in Tyrea had been drastically pushed forward steadily since the use of Hemera as the main energy source for large scale electricity generation became common. Coupled with a much earlier invention of Aether batteries, that could last for decades with moderate usage before they require recharging, it meant that there will be no lack of energy for long time to come.
One of the most significant technological growth was the establishing of the Oversphere developed by the Yggdrasil Technologies to take the place of the Infoweb. Two hundred and eighty-six Overtowers, each with their own Hemera energy plant, and twenty-three satellites were the physical pillars of the high-speed wireless information highway, which makes accessing any public data only a few seconds' work.
In the last several hundred years, technology has increased exponentially every decade or so, to the point where Tyreans have now regularly enjoyed such commodities as personal robots, virtual reality, entry-level AI and nanobots to keep one's body in peak physical condition. These advances are not cheap, however, and are not often seen on the general public. Older models of all technology, though, are dirt cheap, falling into obscurity the instant a new version comes out. As such, you can expect to see endless modifications and hodgepodge creations in the hands of anyone from a highschool student to a down-on-his-luck businessman.
Some of the more recent technological advancement includes:
- Hover technology for most transportation, even for bullet trains.
- Budding laser technology (small-arms have not been realized yet, the only lasers in production being heavy, vehicle-mounted canons).
- Everyone has a microchip 'MiCell' (pronounced as 'my cell') implanted in them that serves as everything from a credit/travel/passport/information card to a database of personal information, criminal records and other such things. It also functions as a miniature computer, lightning-fast and capable of mostly any function you could require. It is able to interface with most any electronic device from within ten feet, and has a broad wireless range for communication purposes. This chip also allows people to 'interface' with the Oversphere, acquiring what can most closely be described as a HUD over their vision, where they can virtually navigate the web, or stand-alone programs they've placed in their chips themselves via thought. However, it has limited storage capacity which is not expandable.
- Watches with every communication function imaginable, from phone-like abilities to full-on virtual conversation capabilities, and most models also contains multimedia playing capabilities, primarily music, but also utilizing holographic technology to view text, images or videos stored within the hard-drive. A number of models are fully customizable, and additional functions includes but are not limited to radio waves transmitting and receiving, taking photos or videos, even area illumination.
- Miniature personal notebook computers, capable of being the size of a cell phone, that easily match today's supercomputers. These devices are capable of whatever technological functions you can dream up, from instantly searching and connecting with other designated computers to giving advice to the owner through an advanced, experimental form of AI that was made publicly available some years ago. Believe it or not, they were first developed with the purpose of replacing printed reading materials as the damage of turning trees into papers was globally recognized.
War
There is a steady alliance between the four continents, but tensions do mount and patience does wear thin from time to time. As opposed to an alliance of total peace, it sometimes seems that it is more of a 'I'm not going to attack you, but I am going to research weapons technology and stockpile in the event that I do.' The last war was several decades ago, and at the moment the only serious threats come from rogue terrorist cells and pulsed criminals.
Auras
Everyone on Tyrea is born with a specific color signature ingrained deep into their very being. This color makes itself apparent most commonly in the eyes, which will always be the color of one's aura. Depending on the strength of one's aura, their hair and/or blood may also take on that color, the vividness of the color denoting strength. In extreme cases, the aura may even be dimly visible in a dark setting.
The auras stem from the planet's core, which is in the shape of an irregular dodecahedron; it has twelve faces, though they are not all the same size. The core rotates opposite the planet, generating energy and warming the surface. The aura one is born with is determined which side of the core was facing their point on the surface when they were born. This leads some auras to be more common than others, with some occurring in less than .2% of the population. The core constantly builds and depletes it's own energy in an unknown process, and how much energy the core has at one's time of birth affects how strong their aura is. Every fifty years or so, the core reaches a critical level and 'pulses'. This is a thirty-second release of energy that literally bathes the planet in light from the inside. Those born within the time of the pulse are unnaturally powerful. Having roughly the same population of Earth, this means that nearly a hundred Tyreans are born in that timeframe. These individuals most often grow up as either infamous villains, powerful forces of good or choose to hide themselves from the general public.
The different auras are as follows:
Sepia (Common) - A defensive color, capable of forming energy shields and lessening the damage taken from blows. Those with a sepia aura can also manipulate the element of earth.
Viridian (Common) - A strong, gentle color, a viridian aura gives a Tyrean an affinity for all things living. Primarily used for healing, and the manipulation of nature.
Cerulean (Common) - The color blue has always had a 'flowing' feeling to it, and the same applies here. Cerulean auras can manipulate anything that flows, be it water, air or electrical currents.
Crimson (Common) - This is a fierce, passionate aura that gives a Tyrean control over fire and heat. These people are usually very charismatic; someone you will either love or hate. They can usually talk their way into or out of anything with more ease than a normal person.
Vermillion (Common) - A vermillion aura grants it's Tyrean enhanced control over their own body. These individuals are faster, stronger and more flexible than the normal person. Metabolism is also increased greatly; it can take barrels of alcohol to become inebriated, serious wounds heal in a matter of days, etc.
Amethyst (Common) - Psychic powers. Clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis... You get the idea. The more powerful this aura is, the more the range and potency of these abilities. Weak clairvoyance could lead to hazy messages, whereas a strong aura would allow one to perfectly grasp hidden details.
Saffron (Uncommon) - A strange, voodoo-like magic. Those with a saffron aura have an uncanny knack for blessing or cursing those they speak to when their emotions run high. These can either be long-term effects, or instantaneous mental commands that wrench control of the target's body from him/her.
Slate (Uncommon) - A slate aura allows the user to vanish without a trace, and pass unnoticed among others. A weak aura would allow someone to escape authorities easily, or hide when they wanted to. A powerful aura would let someone walk through walls, drop through floors, and literally walk right up to a target without them knowing it. Extremely powerful slate auras can simply disappear at will.
Ebony (Uncommon) - Technological control. Ebony auras are capable of instantly understanding and using any form of technology, and higher levels are capable of giving life to inanimate objects, moving and controlling them at will.
Ivory (Uncommon) - Ivory auras are capable of creating small rifts in space. The most common applications of this ability are teleportation, bringing objects to oneself from another place, or hiding in a small, dark pocket of the universe that no one else can get to.
Amber (Rare) - Raw data assimilation and manipulation. Amber auras are capable of reading the absolute history and truth of anything they focus on, and, in some cases can manipulate that data, changing it at their whim. Weaker ones can only read data, whereas powerful ones could literally change their own appearance or physical makeup through DNA manipulation. This applies to anything; computers, people or objects.
Platinum (Very Rare) - Platinum auras are unique, and incredibly powerful. They are only created during a core pulse, because the dodecahedron that makes up the core is shaped in such a way that the platinum surface isn't naturally facing out at Tyrea's surface. During a flash, however, a small section of the surface does see the platinum side of the core. Platinum auras are capable of physically manifesting their dreams, no matter what they are. They can bring monsters into existence, change the laws of physics and lay waste to an entire city with a single nightmare. Since the only platinum auras come from core pulses, there is no such thing as a weak one. There have, however, been documented cases of those that could enter a dream-state while still awake... Able to manipulate reality to their will, consciously. For the most part, though, Platinum auras end up destroying themselves before too long.
Amber and Platinum are not available for use. You may not create a pulsed character without asking nicely, and getting approval.
The Acquisition and Refinement Center (ARC)
Not the largest, but easily the most well-funded joint government organization on Tyrea, the ARC is centered in an unknown location somewhere on one of Tyrea's three oceans. It was created with an intensely simple purpose in mind - collect unwanted objects with negative characteristics from the planet, and convert them into something more useful for Tyreans to benefit from. So far, an incredible number of technological and biological advances have come from ARC. Though their methods are unknown, and none of their employees have ever been introduced publicly, the government tends to turn a bit of a blind eye to the organization, as long as they deliver results. Their goal is clearly the greater good, but they seem to fall into a morally gray area most of the time; probably the reason why their doings are never, ever made public. The Center seems to have an uncanny amount of leeway when it comes to the laws of the various countries, and usually moves and acts of it's own accord without reprisal.
All of the prisoners inside Darkrock have been sentenced with an unconditional contribution to ARC, which most likely means their abnormal powers and auras will be studied intensely in an effort to glean anything useful from them. Should any harm come to them over the course of these studies... They're criminals anyway, who would care?
ARC essentially owns Anginyu, the city Darkrock floated over and crashed into. They provided complete funding for the prison, and provided most of the research that made the anti-rift shields possible. Over the course of several decades, they purchased enough corporations and pieces of the city until they literally owned well over 95% of it. It is as close to an independent city-state as you will find in Viatha.
The Story (so far)
Anginyu has always had a shadow looming over it... Literally. With Darkrock Prison perpetually hanging in the sky overhead like some grotesque insect, all sharp corners and jutting spires, the general mood of the populace is never very high. There is a constant feeling of tension in the air, though some live there for that very feeling, claiming it makes them feel more alive, makes life just a little more exciting. Everyone in Anginyu does actually tend to live every day as if it could be there last. For many, this may just be the case.
Darkrock was placed over Anginyu for a specific reason. A new shielding technology was being developed in the city, one that would allow for an entire city to be covered in a near-inpenetrable shield, one that would block not only all physical attempts at entry (and exit), but also the rifting attempts of Ivory auras. This shield is merely a larger version of the ones found lining every cell in the prison, keeping the criminals secure in their cells with no chance of escape.
When the prison fell through the air, trailing smoke and belching fire from every conceivable opening, half of the civilians began panicking while the other half could only stare in mounting terror. The smart ones simply ran to their vehicles and departed the city as fast as they could, if they were close to the edge. They were the lucky ones. Darkrock Prison impacted the center of Anginyu, punching straight through the floating state buildings, malls, bars and raised highways of the upper section of the city, nestling itself nearly a mile underground in the city's sewer network and lower maintenance tunnels. Before the final shields around the prison failed, the shields around the city were activated by an unknown source, most likely the military or ARC. The entire city was effectively closed in, trapped in with the prison before any of the criminals could rift out, or be rifted out by potential rescuers. The city was thrown into chaos.
There were many criminals in the city to begin with, keeping their ways in check and biding their time for an event just such as this. They are all either fanatically loyal to one of the famous prisoners, or simply want to see mass anarchy spread over the city and, eventually, all of Viatha. Once the proverbial dust settles, they will all likely make their way to the crash site and form a rather formidable team. Their agenda is completely unknown.
Anarchy is inevitable, once people realize the magnitude of what has happened. These were the thirty-eight most dangerous individuals on Tyrea, at one point or another, most of them pulsed and all of them insanely dangerous, now joined by all their loyal followers from the city who have been waiting for this day. A large force of unknown military personnel was rifted into the outskirts of the city seconds before the shields went up, complete with several military vehicles and an entire mobile command post. Those civilians that don't simply panic will probably either throw themselves at the military for trapping them in the city, or go after the criminals themselves as vigilantes, hoping to stop the threat that will most likely destroy their home within several days' time.
Will you play the role of a normal citizen, thrust into an extraordinary situation? Will you play the role of one of the inserted military team sent to deal with the prisoners? Will you play the role of a criminal, attempting to overthrow control of the city amidst the chaos? Or will you play as a part of the shadowy organization ARC, whose agenda is always questionable?
Guidelines
Please try to keep your IC time in sync with everyone else's, if at all possible. My biggest pet peeve with RPs is when character A is in the middle of a heated battle in the dead of night, and *poof!*, character B decides to have a nap and drags the RP into the next day before events are resolved. As such, please be conscious of what's going on around you, and try not to mess up the flow of the story.
You may have high technology and an aura capable of superhuman feats, but please try to refrain from godmodding. Using their aura is tiring to a Tyrean, and the more they exert themselves in doing so, the further their powers slip from their grasp. Those who go too far over their limits risk damaging themselves or losing their aura altogether.
You cannot have a pulsed Aura, or belong to ARC without permission from Sel or myself.
