Square Enix stepped on to the stage during Microsoft's pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference today to talk about two of the company's upcoming projects for the Xbox 360. The first title was the previously announced Infinite Undiscovery, developed by tri-Ace, and the second was the multiplatform title, The Last Remnant. The latter title will not be playayble at TGS, though it will have a trailer.

Infinite Undiscovery had previously been announced as an Action RPG from tri-Ace, with the publisher announced as Microsoft Game Studios. Square Enix has now taken over those duties, as well as taking of the production of the game. The game's main theme is "Situation Battle," where the game's situations will be continually evolving. The game will be completely real-time, with nearly seamless transitions between gameplay, battles, and cutscenes. The game will not even pause the action when players access in-game menus. Though it is currently unavailable, the official site will be found Here.

As of right now, neither game has a release date, though for Infinite Undiscovery the game will "hopefully" be released in the near future.

Not much info yet, but I figured you guys might wanna have a look smile.gif

I remember when Tri Ace mentioned this game a few months back it's good to see it hasn't disappeared from development.

IGN posted some screens of the game and it's looking good so far. SCREENS

EDIT I just noticed their up in TOKYO GS thread, but this game looks like it deserves its own thread anyway.

Just found this on IGN:

QUOTE
In a meeting with Hiroshi Ogawa, Director for Infinite Undiscovery, and Hajime Kojima, Producer for the title, IGN learned for a second time at TGS this year that a game coming to Xbox 360 would require multiple discs. This time around, it's Infinite Undiscovery. The two game makers couldn't say exactly how many discs the game would require as it is still in the middle of production, but they were certain that it wouldn't fit on a single DVD. They also weren't sure how long the game would last, but estimated 30-40 hours.

Get used to the notion of a multiple disc games on Xbox 360. It's looking like you'll be seeing a lot of it in the future.

I'll reiterate my opinion again, that I don't think this is a big deal at all. Ever installment of the main FF series on the PS required 3-4 discs each ( 7,8 and 9), and those are some of the biggest, epic, and overal fun rpgs I've ever played. All I'm reading into this, is right out of the gate, developers are going all out to create classics for the system.

EDIT - gamespot have a Q&A up with IU's producer and director here

Some interesting things of note are:

- Infinite undiscovery is a play on the fun of discovering things and how you can do that forever. I assume mystery and discovery is a big theme here.

- In this world's mythology, the moon gives certain people ( maybe a certain race) great power, and therefore the central villian enchains the moon( whatever that exactly means) in order to steal the light as it were ( very symbolic XD). Apparently a hero rises up and attempts to defeat the villian; however, thats NOT you. You're drawn into the story when you realise you look identical to this hero in question? How, or why? Thats obviously a big part of the story, but it is confirmed that your female companion originally mistakes you for this *hero* and then joins you.

- Being from Tri-ace and SE, the battle system will have some similarities to that of SO3 ( oh goodie >_>) and battles will seamlessly engage from realtime play. eg. you don't have to run facefirst into a moster to trigger battle, approaching them will seamlessly do this. Your companions will be controlled by AI.

- While there is no multiplayer, their aim is to have the AI at such a level that you genuinely feel like your playing an mmo, in that, your alleis running around beside you will behave like real people do when they play, not how some ai's do. Fairly ambitious.

There's other stuff there, but its a little confusing to re-iterate clearer, so have a read! smile.gif
Athrun
Lol, well personally I like to make extra save files in games to watch certain scenes or movies again. (A lot of games these days gives you a Movie Viewer mode) It's annoying for me when you have to have to switch discs between watching them. In Xenosaga 3 for example, there's a movie viewer. I remember we were sitting at a friends house a couple of days ago and looking through some movies. We chose one that looked good, I couldn't remember which disc it was on, but I was hoping it was on the one we had in (Disc 2). Then it said "Please enter Disc 1" We were like, "doh". Luckily I could cancel and backstep. XD We just ended up watching the movies on Disc 2 instead. Lazy lol But it would be a nightmare to have to switch back and forth between 4 discs for me, so I'll stick to one disc games as often as possible.

Anyway, it's good that the games are being developed properly, and Tri-Ace has made some good games in the past so it's worth keeping an eye on.
Razael
Yeah I particularly Love the name of it, seems like a something a 10 year old kid came up with, like Total Overpopulation or Uncharted Inexperience.

I saw the TGS trailer earlier today and was pissed of when it said xbox 360. Since it is squenix i didnt get as mad as when they said they werent gonna release bioshock for the ps3, but it still looks like a fun game.
Athrun
Well I have to check that TGS trailer, but I assume there wasn't much (any?) of the battle system in it?
Sounds like a SO like battle system with the AI controlled partners. I hope you can still give them commands though.

Nothing that can helps you form an idea, there are some quick moments were the system is shown, it actually reminded me of a more action packed FFXII.
Mushroom
Woah, I actually had somehow missed that trailer XD that looks frickin awesome! I guess I now know that when they say "enchained" they literally meant the moon is on a chain XD

The shots of the battle look pretty good, but it was all very quick, didn't see much of what was going on. I know what Raz means in regards to the FFXII comment. I got more of a "SO3 BUT GOOD" vibe wink.gif
Razael
Well I didnt play SO3 but what hit me like FFXII is that its all kinda fixated on the enemy while you can move freely and the rest of your party is also fixated on your enemy but you only control the main dude actively.
Athrun
I watched the trailer now, and I can see the Star Ocean influences in the battle system, even if we didn't get to see much. So the villain has stolen the moons shine? Well I guess it has a serious story like Final Fantasy 12. XD

The game looks pretty cool, but is it me or have most recent rpg's all focused arround characters wearing knights armor? Anyway I hope it turns out good. Then this Microsoft section that we (supposeldy) have on this forum would have more good games for the rpg fans to discuss.
Razael
Yup, i have watched White Knight, Lost Remnant, Lost Odyssey and Infinate Discovery and they are all set in medieval fantasy realms. We should get more modern day era rpgs, even Atlus slipped a bit with Reidou Kuzonoha, not saying it wasnt a welcomed effort but i you know, it would be fun to have more skyscrapers instead of castles on a more balance manner, like 50/50.
Mushroom
I couldthrow mass effect out as being an example, but that would drag up the whole "is it an rpg" debate. Although, I guess thats kind of relevant. Maybe the similar setting because people tend to identify that kind of setting more with rpgs, than the setting of say mass effect. The rpg gamer is generally an untapped market when it comes to x-box still, so thats probably a reason for LO and IU being back to basics. Reel the gamers in, then evolve, or something. I don't know, I'm rambling XD
Hoodman
evolving gameplay I've had this idea for years. I love it when people get on my concepts. No I'm not saying I came up w/ the idea but I've wondered about the possibilites of it for a while. Just like FF Dissidia. I mean come on you can't tell me there arent elements that you RPGers have thought of and have actually seen happen in a game. Maybe this could make me forgive squeenix. I hate the company if you havent figured out yet.
Mushroom
what? Your concepts? I have no idea what you're talking about. I've thought of things that appear in games too, but that doesn't mean someone jumped on my concept. That just confirms it was a good idea since someone put it in a game themselves. Good on them. Also, you came up with these cool ideas, and SE are using them, yet you hate SE? So what do you hate them for, putting out games with good concepts :S in fact, no don't answer, since its really irrelevent to this topic. I just find that statement bizarre.
Sigs Minock
Tri-Ace/SE made Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria... this does look interesting.
i do need more games for my 360...
Hoodman
I hate SE for making me feel like I'm not playing classic RPGs anymore, yeh they put in ideas I've had, which is props; but I've felt so different playing Squeenix than squaresoft RPGs.

I've got FM4, what the heck was that?! does anybody know I mean the premises of that game were disconnected and uninspiring. Musashi: Legend? hmm a deviation from the old PS1 game definitely, it wasn't much to build but this made it worse. FF12, besides Balthier, great graphics & voice acting, the judges plus vayne; this game annoyed me, and I cared far too little to get everything, then again there was just so much stuff, which was real unnecessary but guess you could get it. Plus Level 37 after 90 hours of gameplay? ugh. Crystal Chronicles did anybody play it? Sword,Dawn & Heroes of Mana were all messes that could not compare to the original or Seiken Densetsu 3. Grandia 3, just not interesting, not really bad just not interesting. FF7 extended universe, debatable. KH2.....Well I just dont like KH period.

vs. Squaresoft & Enix separately: Early Dragon Quest(which I've played a little, real small amount of), FF1 through 10(self-explanatory), Chrono Trigger, the god's RPG & Chrono Cross, FM1-3!, Soul Blazer series, Valkyrie Profile, if you like them the Saga series(that's always a mixed bag), Star Ocean 2, The Seiken Densetsus(Secret of Mana and the third one), Xenogears, Einhander(not a half bad shooter), Vagrant Story & FF Tactics, Super Mario RPG, and collaborations w/ tri-Ace.

The only game I had liked as much as those from Squeenix was Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria which hey was in collaboration w/ tri-Ace someone who knos what they're doin, which is I'm hopeful for Infinite Undiscovery.

Well... you're not. Maybe that's why.

Sure you can compare Squares early work to their later, but their good games don't always come out in succession of eachother every year. They had a full load of less-than-good and some even unheard of titles before as well. The last games from Squaresoft were Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Two games that are more disliked than liked by most people. (Even though I happen to be one of those who liked FFX-2.) Square Enix has only been arround since May 2003. In those four years they've released some games that a lot of people have enjoyed. The Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy XII, various FF remakes and I hear Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII got a great reception in Japan.

It's not their best four years, that's for sure. But if I had happened to like FF 12 more than I did, I probably wouldn't have been complaining.
And that said, I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII. I miss having a futuristic setting in an rpg.
Mushroom
Yea, fair enough, I'll admit, SE's most recent games probably don't beat out their older games, but hell, look at the bar they've set. And i agree, maybe some criticism is fair for that, I'm annoyed thatNamco can't put out a tekken on par with their older ones XD I just found it pretty crazy you hate them, thhen the company has obviously provided you with alot of games you love and have spent many hours on.

I agree with Hik, and also i'd add, i personally really enjoyed FFTA, and I've actually seen some very good reviews for Heroes of mana in the uk. I personally think you can loo kat it two ways: take into account their games havent been as good as past offering but remember how many good game sthey HAVE put out; its insane, and they deserve alot of love for it. OR, look at SE as a completely new company. If you can do that, and they didn't have the comparisonof their old games present, then I think alot of people would be like "wow, look at these rpgs and stuff, they rock", but instead people ( and especially a trend with internet psoters XD) gravitate towards the negative side of things, and are disappointed because whatever new game, didn't blow all the old ones away.

I of course hope SE make a game that ends up being more massive than any game they've ever made, that would be awesome, but at the same time, i don't expect every game to do that. IMO FFVII is amazing, and it'll take ALOT for a game to dethrone that for me, so i'm happy playing games that aren't quite as good, because that doesn't mean they suck.

XD And to round that off and bring this back in, I think IU is an excellent example. Look at this game, it looks AWESOME. I'm major hyped for it, SE has ALOT of cool looking games in development, and I think this one could be a winner, and hopefully kick off a new franchise for them.
Hoodman
Hmm yes, I should look at SE as a new company, who I think should make more of their own series instead of making bad sequels to great series. FFX-2(I did like the music there actually lol). I don't miss the futuristic settings, but I definitely the mixture of futuristic into present as was down Chrono Trigger and the Empire of FF6. However, I'm beyond excited for FFXIII, more than anything, I'm expecting to be everything I hope for. I've been so teased by watching that trailer it's crazy I CAN"T WAIT to try it out. IU looks to be pretty good, but I want Mistwalker's LO more, why? Sakaguchi & Uematsu, lotta good RPGs have them in the credits.

Though I'll admit before that Final Fantasy, square was about as pale as SE is now, IMO. So maybe you're right they might need a few years...like the PS3 lol.
Mushroom
XD i agree, the ps3 will likely be a huge turning point for them, not that im convinced they need one haha. Ive been thinknig alot about SE today, since its been up for debate here, and honestly, I think even im probably overcritical to them, and i try and be balanced. I mean, most of their games are REALLY good. Even FFXII. I wasn't that happy with it, but when i sat and thought about it today, relatively, it IS a very good game. Its only because i've came to expect so much that perhaps i overcriticse it, or criticise it for the sake of criticising.

On LO, and IU, I think i dig the design for this game a bit more than the character designs i've seen for LO (look a bit plain) but i think i'm more hyped for LO overall, the game's premise, and stuff i've seen and ehard about what will be in it, sound awesome. And while it sounds IU is using alot of good ideas, they could all translate into suckage, whereas lo has stuff i now im going to like ( turnbased with a twist for example), so maybe thats why. Both are going to rock im sure though.

Well Final Fantasy X-2 was made by Squaresoft, before they became SquareEnix, so blame that one on your old Square if you don't like it. wink.gif But like I said above it was a game that I liked so it doesn't matter to me either way.

But how different they are as a company than before, I can't say for sure. But from what I read, it's made no difference on the games they create. Meaning that Square still focuses on their own games and Enix produce their own. But they have more manpower to put on their projects now.

And why I missed the futuristic games is because most rpg's as of late take place in medival times or has characters runninga rround in armor. Final Fantasy XII, White Knight Story, Lost Oddesy, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata, and probably a few more. Makes me miss settings like those that could be seen in FF 7 and 8 for example.
FF XIII looks a lot like FF8 with it's futuristic setting, so I'm looking forward to that.

No it wasnt, FFX-2 was actually the first game to be released after the merger, what the hell are you smoking?
Mushroom
First game released after the merger, last game developed by squaresoft before it. Thats what I got anyway.
Hoodman
FF X-2 was definitely by square, their last one, probably why they didnt care as much.
The biggest feeling for me is that SE just feels so much like all the other mess that's going down the drain music, movies, and other things. Hopefully SE can make some stuff that lives up to enix and square's older series, for me they don't but that's also because I love the SNES to death. FFXIII really does look great. Of course u like future style w/ the KOS-MOS avatar, Xenosaga is futuristic heavy and actually quite cool to look at, they create so wonderful future worlds in that game, Miltia in particular.

I agree though IU feels so iffy for me. But LO I feel so much more confident about it w/ that new trailer and ingame footage.

Also consider that, you know, like 4 years+ have gone by since this merger you reference. Not only is that a lot of time in general, there's been a console generation jump. Squaresoft today, even if hypothetically left on its own, would not be the same Squaresoft you used to know. And you might be making this same post.

Must be the fumes coming out of your room. There are other continents besides America on the map. wink.gif

It was developed and released by Squaresoft in Japan. Almost one year later it came out in the US. And by then the company had switched names to Square Enix.
Mushroom
I have to say again. Where are all these sub-par/bad SE games anyway? I've spent the last fews days going through my collection and while they are necessarily my favourite games in each series, look at some of the games SE have put out: SO3, massively popular, FFXII, massively popular, DQVIII, massively popular. Now you can argue these aren't as good as older counterparts and power to you, but these are not bad games. These are very solid/good games. And believe me, i'm saying this objectively, since i could rant on about elements of SO3 and FFXII that i hate. Those three juggernauts in 4 years? Yes please. And thats without touching on other games they've released/ have in development.

Fcuk it looks good. I cant wait!!!
LunarMaster
Well PS3 gets FF13 so this Square's 360 exclusive. My biggest gripe with this game is the damn title. Could they have picked a more horrible name. A quick question - Is this going to be in real-time or is going to be more alone the lines of an ATB? It sort of gives off the impression of being more of an MMO battle system than an RPG battle system. Still I like the characters and vibe that the screens shots give off.
Athrun
Yeah I agree about the name. It might get a name change before its release, like some other rpg's recently. Trusty Bell, White Knight Story, Valkyria of the Battlefield. (Although the last two had subtle name changes.)

I don't particularly like the design of the brown haired character, but the girl looks more interesting. And the battles certainly look nice, but it makes me wonder how the battle system works. I hope there's a video soon.

Nice pics Bomb. Hmm this thread I was so upset on. My opinion hasn't really changed, but then again it's hard to compare current things to before, considering it's hard to be original nowadays.
LO haven't really got a chance to try it out, but I hear very mixed reviews.
Well 360 IU whoop, FF13 is there a new trailer yet lol?
MMO RPG style =( I frown upon that.

World release on September 2, 2008. So another RPG for 360 this year. Great for anyone who is fond of STAR OCEAN and VALKYRIE PROFILE (same developer). Also a new trailer on GT:

Looks awesome, the music reminds of Star Ocean a bit too smile.gif Yet another 360 title to add to my most wanted list for this year. For anyone in Europe the game is getting released the same week on the 5th. I can't fault MS' treatment of its European gamers though we never have to wait very long after the US release which is so unlike what we are used to.
Verner
Every time I look at this game, and see those two kids (I have no idea who they are), it reminds me of Zorn and Thorn from FF9.

Every time! I just can't help it. Does anyone else see the resemblance, or is it just me?

Anyway, I just saw a trailer for this game a couple days ago, and I'm interested in it already. Granted, the lip syncs were way off, but I imagine that'll be fixed in the final version. I'm looking forward to this one.

*wibbles* And this looks like a nice RPG to try out. The graphic is to my liking too. sad.gif Me is sad.

The voice acting needs some help not gonna lie about that. But the use of colors, graphics, and the moon story sound pretty good to me so far. The battle system looks fun, I always love turn-based RPGs, but hey times have changed. I like that whole twin concept haven't seen it really in awhile. Love tri-Ace Star Ocean 2 (Star Ocean 1 is a little too dated for me to get into) and Valkyrie Profile are so of my favorite games. It looks to me like a stronger game than LO, can't wait whoohooo 360
FusionNoJutsu
Looks great, I can't wait. Only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the characters call out their special moves. That's gonna take some getting over lol.

This game looks amazing. I'm hoping this title will iron out all of the problems that were present in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. Tri-Ace has a great field record, it's hard not to be excited.

The game certainly looks beautiful. I can't wait to find out more about the core engine.

Infinite Undiscovery has Star Ocean’s private events

Way back in Star Ocean, the first one for the Super Famicom, Tri-Ace included optional story scenes where players can chat with their party before entering a town. This feature carried over to later Star Ocean games in various forms and it will be a part of Infinite Undiscovery too. Viewing private events changes the speaking character’s emotion outlook. This affects the game in battle and relationships.

This isn’t the only element that Infinite Undiscovery shares with Star Ocean. Writing, crafting, alchemy, forging weapons, and cooking are part of the game too. It’s almost like Infinite Undiscovery is Star Ocean with an open MMO-style world like Final Fantasy XII. I just hope it doesn’t have a plot twist of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

I've been liking everything I've read/seen about this game. I'm definitely getting this game, though probably not at launch (it'd just be sitting around anyway, due to a lack of a box). Can't wait. =).

Tell me about it now that the Summer games drought is almost over tons are coming out and there's three damn games I want coming out on the same day (this, Mercenaries 2 and FFIV) and (if I'm lucky) I can I only afford one, but Infinite Undiscovery easily wins for me smile.gif

Anyway there's a preview on IGN with some embedded videos of the game, roll on September 5th (2nd in US).

Having things in common with star ocean is not complimentary imo. I'll probably buy this though, although not at launch. There's a few game sI want in September ( the force unleashed, sonic chronicles), so I'll hold off and get this once its down in price. Who knows though, I can't stand SO3 but loved VP2 and both are Tri-ace, I might be suprised.
