I just played this game a couple of days ago. This game is HIGHLY underrated. If you never played this game, you should the battle system is crazy, I know I'd never get bored of it. If you did play it, tell me what you think of it.

I'd don't know what is is about the "Tales of " series, but I've never been able to really get it to them. Everything about them seems to represent what I love about J-RPGs, but every version I've owned was quickly put down and forgotten. I usually play about 5 hours into them and then lose interest.

I got Tales of Phantasia for my GBA, but I never finished it. I think I only got five hours into it. I dunno, it never jumped out at me as a game to finish. I suppose I could go back and finish it one of these days, but for now it remains on my back log list, definitely. Unless I change my mind...

I wouldn't say its underrated, alot of people around here seem to be aware of the game and its excellency, but yea, its awesome! ToP was the first Tales game I played and although its not my fav (ToS), Its a really fun engaging game

Hmm. Never gave it a go on GBA, not sure if there was any significant difference though? It looked nicer for sue, but the gameplay and battle is what makes the tales games.

The issue with all Tales games: They're unnecessarily lengthy, travel takes forever in all the games, and they can lag like crazy in certain backtracking situations. Plus they've always had extra stuff you can do for NPCs which can be tedious at times. Problem for Tales for me is many times they're just not enough. I like the games but I don't love em.
Tales of Phantasia will take forever, because I have the original on rom, you kno with the extremely annoying encounter rate. Plus the odd fact you have one fighter and about 3 mages(weird).
Tales of Destiny, good lord sometimes I had no idea why we were fighting, many times you get sent all over the place with the game getting it's feet then falling down again. It's amazing at lots of parts and sorely weak at others.
Tales of the Abyss, so far so good, but until a big event happens, the little build-ups can be dull, thankfully the huge character development keeps me entertained until something drastic happens(then again that's why I'm liking this ToA so much).
Tales is what I considered a very mixed and debatable game series. People hate and love different games for varying reasons. Strange series that doesn't have a fluid structure.

..............................HUH?
and plus, even if they are long, that's better. I'd rather play a long game than a short one.

You think they're too lengthy? Hmm. weird. I've only played ToS and ToP, but I have to admit that never being an issue for me. In fact, ToS had two discs, and I still wish it'd been longer. But then again, I was really into the story, so maybe I'm bias. Have you tried ToS hoodman, because I definetey recomend trying it if not, I honestly can't say that was a problem in it. ToP, i havet played in a few years so I can't remember as well.
Also - if your using roms anyway, why not get the gba rom? XD

Note I said unecessarily longer. I like long games...Xenogears, yesssss. But they gotta be engaging enough, Tales series hops in and out of that. I like ToA the most out of the ones I've played. I havent played ToS, but I hear it gets a lot of overhype flak. I'll probably like it though(that monster thing on the world map sounds weird how they're juss like little circles). Phantasia is way dated, it's a bit hard to go through things on the keyboard, it'd be easier if I had a controller, definitely so. Anybody kno where I can still find those(Snes emulator controllers) for a reasonable price?!
GBA rom? why I hear the GBA version got bad marks, I have a GBA anyways. I don't have the time to experiment w/ games like I used to, so I have to go based on reviews or word of mouth and nobody around me knos diddy about RPGs so I gotta go by reviews. Tales series just has always been mediocre for me or a bit above average. They have a lotta potential but never get me enough.

Yu, i did note that, which is whyi said i wanted MORe story than discs; i though tthat it was paced in such a way and fun to the extent even more would be better , and the two discs themselves were not enough for me XD

Overhype? I hardly hear anyone even discuss it, let alone overhype it. IMO, its one of the most underrated rpgs ou tthere, since its at least good, and imo great.

haha fair enough i guess, imo the tales series is a good one with splashes of true brilliance eg the battle system. If you check amazon dude, you should be able to get a usb controller for really cheap, i got mine for £5, you just plug it into the usb, it works for normal games, and you can configure it easily on emulators.

I have this game for my GBA, and it’s really not the best. I got it because I heard it was supposed to be really good, and for the pc it probably is, but I’d pass it on the GBA. The battles, which I usually love in a Tales game, go really slow. Your characters basically are captured in slow motion, and in a battle that annoys me to no ends. Random battles, because of this, rightly made me not enjoy the game. They pop up everywhere and all the time, so it just got annoying. I’m probably not going to bother picking this game up again unless I get it for a different platform.
So, yeah...Story wise it was good, but if you would want to play this game, get it for the pc and not GBA...

Hmm, weird. I'll definetely check that out, when i recomended the gba game up there, i was just working under the assumption an update would be better. I haven't played it yet, although, I do have it right here, so I might do some comparison work later. Although with Rogue Galaxy, chrono trigger, and DQVIII lined up, I have hardly time to post, let alone play other games XD

5 pounds, lucky brits. Anywayz, Tales of Phantasia is really engaging I'll agree on that it's just tedious on a keyboard plus I miraculously cannot locate the file anymore on my computer and have no idea to look for it dammit, I have no idea when I'll finish it now, cauz it took a damn long time to get to where I was.

I only played about 4 hours of ToP (on GBA), but nothing in that 4 hours caught my interest. At all. I guess playing ToP after other games in the series was probably a bad idea. It just seems so... slow. My expectations were probably too high going into the game, but for the fact that the battles were so slow, I just couldn't get into it.

Well, as far as ToS goes, i'd definetely agree. If i'd played ToP after, i probably would have had alot of problems getting into it. However, i played ToP first, so the battlesystem aone was enough for me to play on XD

Heh, if only they actually made ToS hard. I have ToP on my GBA and its the hardest RPG I've played for quite a long time. Maybe I just suck but overall it seems more difficult. I got through all of ToS and only died three or four times, but never a game over. Anyway, I played ToS long before I played ToP, but I enjoy them both. ToS seemed like a really refreshing RPG since it just seemed different from all the other average, everyday RPG's there were.

XD I'm not sure if you're counting this, but there are several difficulty modes for ToS, if you go into options while you're playing the game you can amp it right up, and once you've finished the game once, you unlocked a really badass hard mode

ToS is awesome though, i rank it right up there with Grandia 2 as being pretty underrated and overlooked, perhaps because of their origins (GC, Dreamcast), but two of my absolute top games of this generation.

Yeh so somehow I lost the file to this game on my computer. How I'm going to play back all the way to Dhaos's castle(first time). I have no idea. It was tedious as hell and fun but I really don't wanna go through it again. Someone should just tell me the outcome, I don't have enough time to go through that again.
