New Cave Entrances Seen on Mars

Riding with Robots writes "The Mars Odyssey orbiter has come across what look to be openings to cavernous spaces under the surface of Mars. NASA reports the find is fueling interest in potential underground habitats and sparking searches for caves elsewhere on the Red Planet. These latest images follow other recent discoveries of intriguing places to explore. From the article: 'The find has led some to wonder if these or other caves on the planet may provide shelter to life or former life on the Red Planet. "Somewhere on Mars, caves might provide a protected niche for past or current life, or shelter for humans in the future," said Tim Titus of the U.S. Geological Survey in Flagstaff. These caves, however, likely never hosted life due to the extreme altitude of their location. "Even if life has ever existed on Mars, it may not have migrated to this height," said Cushing.'"

Underlined crap are links to further information.

I really hope that this does lead to findings of life, or life at some point on Mars. That'd really have the Christians itching their sacks, yes? While I honestly doubt there's any further signs of life on the planet, it'll be interesting to see if anything develops with the exploration of these caves.

The truth is out there

This is interesting. I hope scientists will find even more things on Mars as time proceeds. Who knows what kind of unusual things might be discovered exploring this planet.
Jerame
Well, it wouldn't surprise me if Mars did have signs of life --- either past or present. I mean, we've got how many planets in the solar system, and we're expected to believe that Earth is the only one that has sustained life?

What the hell would be the point of the others? Decoration?

Well, it would suprise me in the case of mars, since its so desolate. But Iagree with that theory. With the millions of solarsystems, stars and planets going on, the odds are far more likely that intelligent life has evolved elsewhere outside of earth, than not. I'm not saying thats green men, or humans like us, it all depends on the planets climate and all that stuff, but yea. Its far more plausable that there's life out there.

Only some Christians, you mean.
I can't speak for everyone, but not all of us are stupid enough to actually think we're alone in the universe.

Anyway, this should be interesting. I'm not hoping much, but it'll be nice to see if there's anything to be had in this new caves. Now all we need to do is get a probe onto the surface.

I wouldn't call someone stupid for thinking we're alone, given we know nothing. But perhaps it is "stupid" to dismiss that there "could" be. On topic, sounds interesting, I don't know what they'll find, but i'll try and stay tuned. XD

Wow, NASA has finally discovered something interesting.

As long as any aliens they find aren't as annoying as ET, I'm happy.

Even if they found cave entrances on mars I don't think that we'll find anything else!!! If e.t.'s inteligence is higher than ours what makes us think that we'll "find" anything about them? Unless it was left behind for us to find! Otherwise I don't think that e.t. don't want to socialize with creatures like us!
I believe that they will reveal themselves when mankind evolves into a superior being in all aspects!

Well, the Catholic Church still believed the Earth was flat in the 80's when they finally admitted it, so I don't know about it being stupid to think we're not the only ones in such a vast open space, where there can be anything.

Mars has potential to sustain life, especially considering it is on the edge of the so called circle of life, which is where Earth is in, where it is ideal for humans to live in. That, or Mars used to be in there, not sure anymore.

Anyway, I do hope they will find some form of life, though looking for bacteria, or other forms of micro organism is a bit silly in my opinion, I'd rather hear about them finding something more humanoid, or at least being able to walk and eat on its own, instead of being not visable to the human eye.

Also, didn't they found this planet not too long ago?
Instead of looking on Mars, I think they should be spending money on technology that allows them to travel faster than what they do now, because it is getting silly.
The only downside is, is that when you warpspeed to god knows where, the route to coming back.

This really interests me cause I'm not aware that the Catholic Church thought that. My parents and grandparents are Christians that have grown up with a lot of Catholic influence, yet they were never ignorant about Earth being a sphere.

According to the vatican the church has to stand to it's beliefs even if it's completely destroyed by todays knowledge. They gotta be a "rebel" of some sort and be against today's beliefs like the use of condoms and pre-marital intercourse! According to the priest of my towns' church the vatican does this for two reasons:
1- To bring some moral support in a world with no morals;
2- To keep the church interesting because, if the church would think and act like todays' thinking, people would see the church has something vulgar and unimportant in peoples' lives.
Vilagen
Yeah, but what kind of beliefs do you mean, because believing that the Earth is round and believing in the Bible is not a contradiction. Not saying that the Catholic church is not stubborn, but I have a hard time believing that they were teaching that the Earth was flat all they way up till the 80's.
Brahma
When I say beliefs I mean what says in the bible, like gay people will go straight to hell and condoms are the work of the devil and you can't masturbate cuz sperm is holy! Believing that the world was flat in the 80's could be possible but it would be taught by very few people in the church! C'mon! There was proof that the world was round decades ago! Surely people in the 80's would still believe that the world was flat! And the vatican also knew this. They just admited that the world was round only in the 80's.
andor
they found bacteria on mars does that count as aliens?
unknownassailant
im just glad that nasa has finally earned the funding the government has given them
Brahma
I guess that bacteria can be considered as alien if it's a type of bacteria unexistent in our planet...
Demonwing
Don't really see anything important about this, it's just a cave. If there was life on Mars, it probably died out when the planet became a desert, possibly leaving bacteria and whatnot.
Apple_Juice
i really wouldnt be surprised if they do find any other kind of life form in the universe. cause come on, only us? in the whole universe? thats bull, there has to be something out there.
Nokte
I like how Mars isn't in our star's habitable zone whatsoever and how Europa actually has a better chance at supporting life. That Venus has a better chance at supporting life. Past and present.

Ah well.

I agree. Of all the thousands of Millions of billions etc of planets in all that is space is it not a tad bit aggorant to believe that earth is the only one that has life?
