EA owns Mass Effect ... so, what now?

Also discussed during EA's BioWare/Pandemic conference call was the fate of the (thus far) Xbox 360-exclusive Mass Effect. While Microsoft is still publishing the first installment of the game (which is due November 20) – now that the previously BioWare-owned IP belongs to EA – Gamasutra notes that it "would conceivably from here out be EA published."

If one examines EA's publishing practices, it isn't difficult to assume that this would also conceivably be a multi-platform title, meaning Microsoft may have just lost one of their biggest exclusives. Will we see a PS3 sequel at parity with the 360? Or perhaps a Wii version: Mass Wiifect ... over a dozen minigames ... in space!

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson tells Joystiq that while the publisher has not "announced specifics regarding sequels" to Mass Effect, it will be "talking to EA and BioWare in the weeks to come." In addition, Microsoft remains "committed to the franchise's long term success."

Update 2: BioWare tells GameDaily that the developer's "focus is pure and simple; it's to deliver the best game possible for our fans with Mass Effect, and that's an Xbox 360 exclusive." Currently, there are no plans to extend the franchise to PS3.

God help us all...

So much for KOTOR 3 in the future menu.
The Evil Dead
I don't see why you'd say that... Unless Microsoft has already snatched up the rights to the next KOTOR game(s?) it could mean we'll see KOTOR on all systems as EA likes to throw stuff everywhere if Bioware has the ability to make Star Wars games, which I'm sure they do.

That's my guess at least. I mean it may not happen anytime soon, but I think there would be a lot of please people if they went multi ( And by multi I mean 360/PS3, lollermcskate at what the Wii version would turn out like ). I mean who didn't want to play KOTOR on their PS2? It could have been done, damnit.

My guess is that Microsoft will pay dearly to try and keep this game exclusive. I also think that they might just have an edge over the competition on this matter for the simple fact that Peter Moore is now working for EA (maybe a spy for MS) and the fact that the 360 is helping them rake in the most money.

As for platform sales (for the three months leading up to September 30), they go a little something like this:

Xbox 360 - $218 million
PlayStation 2 - $73 million
Nintendo Wii - $59 million
Nintendo DS - $47 million
PlayStation Portable - $21 million
PlayStation 3 - $17 million

Still it is EA so I would not be surprised if Mass Effect Mini Game Collection even gets a Wii release in the future. I do really hope they make a KOTOR 3. That game would probably be amazing.

O EA, they're a screwy company if you ask me. I hope BioWare really cranks out Mass Effect

Uh. EA doesn't own Mass Effect. EA owns Bioware, yes, but until sold the intellectual property belongs to its creator.

Honestly, I'm happy for Bioware. EA didn't purchase Bioware for any reason other than to gain some credibility, and they know that the only way they'll get that is if they just dump truckloads of money into the studio and stand back while they churn out results. There wont be any tampering with future Bioware games. It'll just be check after check. The fact that Bioware already had close ties with EA's current CEO just confirms this.

Yes, it belongs to its creator...Bioware...Whom EA own.

These rumours would not exist at all if what you are saying is true.

But, as made clear by Bioware, Mass Effect franchise is to remain exclusive to 360, probably part of a deal MS set up. I'm sure Bioware and (especially) EA would like to spread to other consoles, but if they're under contract they're under contract.

You know, it really irks me when MS makes certain games be on the console only, when really, they pretty much own the computer gaming market (as no one makes ##### for the Mac except Blizzard). I want this game on PC.

Common sense rules, doesn't it, Lem?

I mean you can try to debunk a credible sources article title Nokte, but I don't recommend it.

Only partially right. If memory serves, the owner of the IP is actually Drew Karpyshyn or one of the former CEOs of Bioware. Although they're now employed by EA, that doesn't mean they've given over their rights to the IP. Furthermore, unless Bioware sells the IP rights to EA (see: Fallout and Bethesda) EA will have no control over the property itself. And again, if memory serves, Bioware's original IPs were absolutely not a part of the EA buyout.

For as long as EA owns Bioware they can easily say "Hey, do us a favor and make [blank] based on Mass Effect" but once Bioware leaves, they take their IPs with them. And if the owner of the IP itself leaves, then neither Bioware nor EA will have control over it.

Bioware developed their own original IPs because they were tired of dealing with the intellectual properties of others. They aren't about to just give up their own stuff.

Here's a great example: Despite being owned by Microsoft, Bungie still retained their IP to Marathon even after the split. Microsoft never once owned the Marathon IP, they just employed the creators.

And finally, to quote directly from the article (and, interestingly, from EA's own mouth); "Says EA CEO John Riccitiello, 'We bring a lot to the table ... we simplify the process of courting publishers, basically taking it to zero.' He adds that EA, being the publishing giant that it is, can 'reach places where [BioWare and Pandemic] don't get to so we can build their properties bigger.'" Emphasis added.

I proclaim this article title debunked. Humorously, debunked using the article itself.

You might be reading too much into the wording of a sentance as to how the actual aquisition of IPs played out.

Truth is we dont know if EA now have the Mass Effect IP or not.

::Shrugs:: It only seems logical to me that if EA owned the Mass Effect IP they would be stating "Ours" and not "Theirs." wink.gif

As I've stated before, all EA is trying to do is buy some credibility in the gaming market. Or become the Skynet of the gaming industry. Either or.
