Major pirate website shut down

One of the world's most-used pirate film websites has been closed after providing links to illegal versions of major Hollywood hits and TV shows.

The first closure of a major UK-based pirate site was also accompanied by raids and an arrest, the anti-piracy group Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) said today.

A 26-year-old man from Cheltenham was arrested on Thursday in connection with offences relating to the facilitation of copyright infringement on the internet, Fact said.

The arrest and the closure of the site - www.tv-links.co.uk - came during an operation by officers from Gloucestershire County Council trading standards in conjunction with investigators from Fact and Gloucestershire Police.

Fact claims that tv-links.co.uk was providing links to illegal film content that had been camcorder recorded from cinemas and then uploaded to the internet. The site also provided links to TV shows that were being illegally distributed.

Visitors to the site could get access to major feature films, sometimes within days of their initial cinema release. Recent links took users to illegal versions of the Disney/Pixar animation sensation Ratatouille as well as to most of this summer's blockbusters.

"Sites such as TV Links contribute to and profit from copyright infringement by identifying, posting, organising, and indexing links to infringing content found on the internet that users can then view on demand by visiting these illegal sites," said a spokesman for Fact.

The group's director general Kieron Sharp said TV Links was the first major target in a campaign to crackdown on web piracy.

"The theft and distribution of films harms the livelihoods of those working in the UK film industry and in ancillary industries, as well as damaging the economy," he said.

Roger Marles, from Trading Standards said sites such as TV Links allowed people to break UK copyright law.

"The 'users' are potentially evading licence fees, subscription fees to digital services or the cost of purchase or admittance to cinemas to view the films," he added.

The British Video Association estimates that at least £459m was lost to the video, film and TV industries due to piracy in 2006.

Ah well. Oink got shutdown too in a similar way this week. I'd laugh if suddenly a bunch of the primetime shows dipped in popularity as a result of this.

Hm NOOOOOOOOO! where do i watch 24 now
Denim
I found out about this the other day. It's terrible news indeed. I mean, I still pay to see movies anyway. >_>; Where the hell else am I gonna enjoy Mystery Science Theater 3000? DVDs? Eff that.

Oh that really sucks, I liked that website =(. It had a couple of problems but it was about the best place to download and watch programs because it had such a wide selection.

I was planning on watching Scrubs 6th season on there, grrr >=[

Piracy site? No, they had NOTHING illegal upon it whatsoever. It just gave links to where we can watch movies. The movies themselves were illegal, but the links aren't. Especially after all they did to prevent downloading of them, such as embedding the movies into the links instead of letting you see them there, so you can't download.

I'll always have my other sources but still, he could possibly be fined around 100 million pounds. For what though, he didn't do any acts of copyright infringement or anything like that.

These damn people are all assuming that because of piracy, they lose money. This is false, however. I watched hundreds of movies off the site. Does that mean I'd have gone out of my way to buy or rent ANY of them? Probably not, I wouldn't have cared enough. However, I actually did end up buying two movies BECAUSE I liked them, and wanted them in good quality with the bonuses and all.

Bah, so they really did shut down. I noticed the other day that the site wasn't working... Damn. Very disappointing. I wish they could've at least kept up some of the nifty little things, like the video game FMV compilations, music videos, et cetera. Was overall a nifty site, though, especially if I wanted to see if a particular movie/show was worth buying eventually, or something like that. *sigh* Oh well. It will be missed.

Thats probably why they got away with it for so long. It was kept pretty hush-hush, it was the kinda thing you only told your chums about.
Loomis
Wait, how did they profit from it?
Souls
I think they asked for small donations, but I'm not 100% on that.

There are a couple of half decent sights like TV links;

alluc.org is one of them. They have a lot of shows, cartoons, movies and animes but they are not quite as organized as TV links was. Plus, they do not have such a great selection that TV links did.

Erhm.

I do believe it might be coming back. Type the URL to see.

That's what Napster said.... Looked at what happened to it.

Where every other site profits from... advertising probably.

I didn't know this site existed either... but I never watched live-action shows anyway. Rest in peace.
Denim
TV Links didn't advertise - if it did, it wouldn't have lasted ANYWHERE near as long as it did. You found out about TV links through word of mouth, also there were no advertisements on the actual site (like we have on this site, for example), it profited from Paypal donations.
Mushroom
Money had to pass hands in my neighbourhood to find out about vlinks XD
