BALTIMORE --A grieving father won a nearly $11 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals out of a belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

Albert Snyder of York, Pa., sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified damages after members demonstrated at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq.

The federal jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress.

Snyder's attorney, Craig Trebilcock, had urged jurors to determine an amount "that says don't do this in Maryland again. Do not bring your circus of hate to Maryland again."

The defense said it planned to appeal, and one of the church's leaders, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the members would continue to picket military funerals.
JEFF JACOBY: What we can learn from a church of hate

"Absolutely; don't you understand this was an act in futility?" Phelps-Roper said.

Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags."

Snyder claimed the protests intruded upon what should have been a private ceremony and sullied his memory of the event.

The church members testified they are following their religious beliefs by spreading the message that soldiers are dying because the nation is too tolerant of homosexuality.

Their attorneys maintained in closing arguments Tuesday that the burial was a public event and that even abhorrent points of view are protected by the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and religion.

A number of states have passed laws regarding funeral protests, and Congress has passed a law prohibiting such protests at federal cemeteries. But the Maryland lawsuit is believed to be the first filed by the family of a fallen serviceman.

The church and three of its leaders -- Fred Phelps and his two daughters, Phelps-Roper and Rebekah Phelps-Davis, 46 -- were found liable for invasion of privacy and intent to inflict emotional distress.

The group is confident the award will be overturned on appeal, Phelps said

"Oh, it will take about five minutes to get that thing reversed," he said.

Earlier, church members staged a demonstration outside the federal courthouse. Phelps held a sign reading "God is your enemy," while Phelps-Roper stood on an American flag and carried a sign that read "God hates *** enablers." Members of the group sang "God Hates America" to the tune of "God Bless America."

Snyder sobbed when he heard the verdict, while members of the church greeted the news with tightlipped smiles.

It was unclear whether the plaintiffs would be able to collect the damages awarded.

Before the jury began deliberating the size of punitive damages, U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett noted that the size of the compensatory award "far exceeds the net worth of the defendants," according to financial statements filed with the court.

Defense lawyer Jonathan Katz said the church has about 75 members and is funded by tithing.

The defense attorney said that the assets of the church and the three defendants are less than a million dollars and that the compensatory award is about three times the defendants' net worth, mainly in homes, cars and retirement accounts.

One of Snyder's attorneys, Sean Summers, said he would tirelessly seek payment of the award.

"We will chase them forever if it takes that long," Summers said.

About time this group faces something. Not exactly "divine" punishment, but it goes to show that hate doesn't pay.
Enjoy.

Right on. Now all we need to do is burn down a few churches, sit back, and enjoy the show.

Just another example of how stupid some Christians are.

You don't know about that group, do you? They aren't exactly what Christians call Christians. Ask around. wink.gif
Nice to know you want to light some fires, maybe a lawsuit will come your way soon enough.
Noir
Well what does the group call itself? They can't be worse than Children of The Illuminated Path.
True Rune
Westboro Baptist Church. Topeka, Kansas. And to think they were civil rights activists..
Children of the Illuminated path? That's not Jim Jones's group is it?
Noir
Not sure. All I know is it's a bunch of nutty motherfuckers with guns out in Texas.
Cel Merion
So it's official, anyone out of texas has a giant stick up their asses. >_> Seriously, as a member of a Bapist church I'm hating the fact that people will see these hicks and think the rest of us are the same. Of course in America I'm used to it by now but still. -.-

Yeah they call themselves the "Baptist Church", but the Baptist religion is more along the lines of a formal group of people supporting some cause/point related to God. These people do NOT represent what "God" really is in religion. These people are absolute nutjobs.

Christian religions for the vast majority do NOT preach that "God hates fags" and that God punishes soldiers for the fact America accepts homosexuality. God on a more general sense, Christians would claim, is about treating your neighbor like you'd want to be treated, following the 10 Commandments, believe in the Divine works of God. NOT to be insensitive by using a racially charged word like "***" at a formal funeral.

Plus, there really is two kinds of Christianity: (This chart shows it well)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:ChristianityBranches.svg

The Catholic side and the Orthodox side. Orthodox is the most level-headed out of the Christian religions. Never are the Orthodox Christians known for extorting money to forgive sins, claiming when Judgement day is to promote people coming to church, and going on bloody crusades.

They tend to follow the bible more closely as well. Not in the strict literal sense, but I'm sure all of you have seen statues of the Virgin Mary and other saints at Roman Catholic churches, but the Bible clearly looks at this idolitry. Making a false idol. Orthodoxy has icons and stained glass instead of idols.

Something small, but its one of MANY things that created the religious schism, and the Protestant and Baptist divisions of Christianity came from the Catholic religion, so they fall under that branch of "altered Christianity"

(Oh man off topic). I was just trying to show how the Baptist religion in general is a very minute and for the most part historically incorrect practice of Christianity, nevermind this small Baptist church in friggin Kansas.

btw... I don't think the article mentioned this, but the church is made up of 34 family members roflcopter. They're all from the same hick family.

They probably supported the war going into it as well. This lot should be executed, firing squad style.

use pellet guns, that way it'll last longer. and it should be televised.

I don't know, Baptists don't seem that bad to me. Eastern Orthodox pray to Mary and the saints as well, I think. They are very similar, just they differ on marriage issues and don't recognize the Pope as the "vicar of Christ" and papal infalialbility(I can't spell this word...), but they have a Patriarch, it's interesting. They do seem to be pretty historically correct and do the services like the apostles did. (At least they say they do.) You should talk to Catholics and EO's to see which one "split". XD On topic, I didn't know that church was basically the same family. Makes sense though, given their message.

Well fundamentally they're very similar, but there's a LOT of differences.

Orthodox Christians believe the same thing they believed thousands of years ago. They believe that what Christ taught with the apostles is the same law of religion that applies today. They don't alter any of the teachings or add on to it (Such as Catholic view of paying for sins, building statues, and following a different calendar)

And as to Calendar, Roman Catholic follow a different one. They follow the Gregorian Calendar (Which is basically A.D. and current years). Whereas Orthodox follow the Julian calendar (Namely for Easter). Ever wonder why Orthodox people celebrate it at a different time every year than Catholic religions? It's because the Gregorian calendar never changes, but the Julian calendar changes yearly according to days and whatnot. So the Orthodox believe the Julian calendar is most accurate to the exact day Jesus died, since the Gregorian Calendar was revised years later by the Catholics. It's more accurite historically as the actual anniversary day.

And there ARE patriarchs in Eastern Orthodoxy, but they don't have the same powers that Catholics give the Pope. Like, there are lots of different KINDS of bishops (bishop, archbishop, patriarch, metropolitan), but they all have equal powers in the church, and they do not speak for it individuall like the Pope. They just have different "ranks" to symbolize who they represent. Not lead.

The way they receive communion is different too. There's no "first communion" ceremony in the Orthodox religion. As a baby you receive communion to forgive original sin along with being baptised.

And probably one of the biggest is the difference between "The Mysteries". Catholics believe that the material objects they turn into communion are through a priest who acts "in person of Christ", whereas Orthodox believe in the Holy Spirit to come and grace and bless the materials. Ever wonder why Orthodox say "In the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit"? And use three fingers to make their cross, whereas Catholics say "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" And only do it with two fingers? It is because Catholics don't acknolwdge the Holy Spirit as a factor (even though it was clearly there in the Bible).

There's a LOT of other differences, some even bigger than those I've mentioned (Mainly on the 7 Sacraments of the church), but I just wanted to list a few to show how different they really are.

Sorry for being so off topic. lol
