I only did FF VIII because i think this is the series with the best line up of summons.
They look really cool, despite the Ps1 grafix, but the attacks rocked my socks.
so my favorites are:

Diablos and Leviathan. Period 8)

He came during my final battle, and uses it. I was so happy he came... ONE damage.

Mine would still be Diablos and Leviathan, but the exception of Neo Bahamut, that was sick 8)

I hate them all, so I'll say Bahamut just because he's a dragon.

Gilgamesh, mainly because it killed Omega Weapon for me.

Diablos

Man, his Dark Messenger is an amazing attack. It is not just one of the strongest attacks in the game (can deal up to 10k), but also has some of the nicest cinematics.

Eden

Sure, these cinematics are ridiculously long, but they sure are pretty amazing. I just wished they did something more with the big explosion at the end, it is a bit, well with the whole sequence in before and the planet stopping to turn, a bit bland.

Tonberry

Doink! Laughed my arse off, when I first saw this one. It is also funny that the dual shock vibrates like crazy just before the stab.

Cactuar

Another one that made me laugh. It is simply the silly animations of Cactuar as the whole set up. He appears like a superstar and performs his 10k needles, which is simply the most effective GF, if you have him at lvl 100.

Doomtrain

Simply because of all the bad status effects you give your opponent. It is awesome.

Shiva

My favourite Shiva summon in all the FF games. Why, it is because of her looks and animations. She looks so diffirent from the standard versions of her, plus the whole attacks looks much better imo.

Quetzalcoatl

I just love the animation. I can't really explain it, I do have to say that Quetzalcoatl looks pretty good in this game as wel. Anyway, it is the attack animation =).

Alexander

Not to keen on his whole, "I am a castle" thing, but this attack sureley made the step for his amazing battle with Bahamut in Final Fantasy IX.
Holy Judgement rocks in this game, though not as powerful once you progress in the game.



This game also holds ugly summons.
So far in every game, Ifrit has turned me down. I never liked him and I doubt I ever will. Pandemona was awful aswell and Leviathan was the worst in the series.
Come on, he magically makes a big cliff and at the top, he turns himself into a waterfall. Luckily they improved Leviathan in something much better in IX.
Another one that was pretty awful was Siren... and is it me, or is she hairy? =p

Oh Ifrit and Shiva are my top favorite GF and also through all FF summons, in apperance that is!

It could be that FF8 was my first FF, but I still think, this is how Ifrit and Shiva is supposed to look like!
and their attacks, while not overwhelming special, they where nice!

FFX Shiva is a close second to FF8 shiva.

Oh wow Pes, yeah Ifrit is probably my favorite GF, I usually love his art how its kinda like the beast/demon.

I remember enjoying Shiva's animation too, but other than that, none of the GFs really stand out to me. I remember Eden taking FOREVER to attack lol with its animation.

Doomtrain, Tonberry, Diablos, *spoilers* Griever

Yeah, but the extremely long wait gives you plenty of time to boost all the way. Plus Eden knows Devour, which can (if used properly) change the difficulty of the game in a major way.

I never liked the looks of Ifrit. I just find him looking ugly and I was glad when Ifrit wasn't there in XII, but Belias doesn't look much better either



He comes with great abilities, so he is a good addition to your party.

My favorites are probably Shiva, Quetzalcoatl, Diablos, Cactuar and Odin.

Odin was pretty awesome because he would always instant KO, unlike Gilgamesh. And I just love Odin's Zantetsuken animation.
Shiva's attack animation in this game is definitely my favorite. And Quetzalcoatl and Diablos were pretty cool as well. Cactuar was a funny G.F. and I guess I like the actual battle against him more than having him as a summon. Squall's Renzokuken animation changed as well some times depending on the boss. And against Cactuar it was a bit different than usual, which is another reason why I liked that battle.

Pfft, so what? Odin doesn't show up in any boss fights and somehow Seifer manages to kill him.

I think you can keep him if you get him after the Seifer fight.
Besides, it's not the bosses you want to instant KO, but annoying enemies. If you do, then you can join the very very very lame cheap ass club along with Mr. "I-used-Zanmato-on-Penance" Xerno.

When are they that annoying though? The only use Odin has ever been to me was on The Island Closest to Hell and The Island Closest to Heaven. But Odin is practically worthless if you just use Selphie (the higher her level is, the higher the chance is that you'll get her to use The End when it comes time to use a Limit Break).

Yeah, his Renzokuken changed with various bossbattles, inlcuding Bahamut, Ultima Weapon and the final battle.

Sure, Malboros are extremely difficult in FF VIII, but with Doomtrain and the right guard against certain statuseffects he causes with Bad Breath (sleep, berserk, silence), he'll be less trouble.
Island Closest To Hell has the nasty Ruby Dragons though. Their Breath attack is dangerous, no matter on what level you are.

With a good juctioned Vit stat, Breath is reduced to triple digit damage. Also, Malboros are weak if you junction Berserk/Confuse/Sleep/Pain to Status Def. There's not much that can hurt you if you know what you're doing

Doomtrain generally the most functional, Vit 0, love it!

Man... all the them sucked for the single reason that they all took so damn long and were cheap, you could summon them with no cost and as long as you were compatible enough you could summon them quick enough so they wouldn't take any damage while they were protecting you.

Anyway, there were some cool looking GFs, namely Diabos and Ifrit. Shiva was cool, but has nothing on her FFX incarnation. The designs WERE very good, but then again FFVIII was very much focused on the visuals (not saying it's a bad thing). FFVIII Ifrit is probably the only one out of the series that I like the look of. He is either too green or just a stupid design (coughFFXcough).

I seriusly didn't like Ifrit's FFVII design, YELLOW... sorry I got'to throw up!!!

I personally liked FFX Ifrit the best. I thought all of the previous summons in FFX were the best out of most of the recent 3D FF's. Except maybe Bahamut, but FFVII was cheap and gave you three different Bahamut looks.

In any case, from FFVIII I liked Diablos the best. His move really isn't all that spectacular unless you have him up to level 50 or something and are fighting a boss half way through the game. Beyond that though, he can only do a max of 9999 when at a certain point, almost all of the characters can do that kind of damage, so Diablos becomes worthless, besides his awesome Mug ability. But...I liked him the best anyway just because he looked cool. Call me vain.

I'm biased when it comes to dragons (especially Bahamut in particular), so I'll go with Bahamut. :3
He's generally one of the best in every game, anyway, and this was no exception in VIII.

I've always had a place in my heart for Diablos, though, ever since I first fought him and used him. Lots of handy abilities, sweet design, nifty animation, et cetera. Pretty sure he's able to one-hit most enemies when he's at level 100, too. (If memory serves me right, his attack does x% of the enemy's maximum HP value, where "x" = his level, or something along those lines.) Speaking of his attack, I always found it really useful on enemies not immune to gravity-based attacks, since it's based on the enemies' maximum HP value, rather than the remaining amount (like Demi bases its damage on).

Edit: Ah, forgot to mention that, as Exire pointed out, Diablos' damage caps at 9999. Despite that, though, I'm pretty sure once he hits level 100, it's either one-hit kills, or if they're resistant/immune to gravity-based attacks, then whatever his normal damage would be against that kind of enemy. ...Of course, if anyone can confirm or deny this, please do.

Bahamut was extremely cool in this one, long animation and a lot of damage thrown at the enemy.

Big Fan of Diablos. They did a good job with Doomtrain's visuals.

I'm not a fan of Doomtrain, that I can say... I don't find status effects a lot of help for my style of battling... Eden too, it's too long to wait, I'm impatient...

Pandemona was just plain disappointing, I like wind attributed summons, but this one just plain sucked...

Diablos is a different story though... I just had to get him ASAP, then have him learn Mug, Enc Half, and such...

Odin was also cool... Just wish he had his Gunge Lance...

I liked the Eden animation, though it was insanely long - it made boosting easy though. You could screw up 3 times and still get it to 250 in time. Bahamut also had a good animation, plus I just generally like Bahamut anyway (how could you not like the king of dragons?!).

That said, I think that Doomtrain animations were pretty cool but I didn't particularly find it that useful of a summon. Diablos it goes without saying, was pretty damn sweet, least of all for the abilities he lets you learn.

My favorite was Diablos.

Really? I was so dissapointed with the eden animation... mostly because I have no idea what actually happens in it. Too many bright lights and explosions, but still no clue what is actually happening. The break 9999 damage was nice, and devour was humerous (On my first time I gave it to Rinoa XD) but I hate overpowered things in games. I can't complain too much though, he is an extra and you do have to fight a hard boss (and near the end of the game) to get him.

ODIN hands down best even tho you couldnt summon him whenever you wanted
