does anyone play ffXI and if so how long does patching up usually takes on a 56 kbs connection

You're gonna be sitting down for a few days man.
Seriously. It takes at least 5 hours on a broadband connection, on a 56k its just torture.
I wouldn't even want to PLAY the game on a 56k.

it didn't take five hours for me, but i don't want to imagine how long it would take to get the patches on 56ks
