So I finally got my 360 and am needing recamendations to the best games out for it currently.
I am obviously aware of Halo 3 and will be getting it soon, so I don't need to get everyone telling me to get it.
The only games I have for it so far are Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Halo 3 is a generic first person shooter that tries far too hard to be Marathon, and failing horribly all along the way. At least it has fun multiplayer. If you've got XBL Gold, I'd say grab it. Otherwise it's kind of pointless.
Mass Effect is a great TPS/RPG hybrid by Bioware, arguably the greatest RPG developer of our time. (I say arguably because, simply, the Baldur's Gate team is mostly at Obsidian now as well as other places, and because Black Isle and Tolkeia would've given them a run for their money were they still afloat).
Gears of War and Bioshock are the obvious shooter suggestions. Gears of War is a TPS, is fast paced, quite stunning, and a lot of raw fun. Bioshock, of course, is the spiritual successor of the System Shock series and although it loses a lot of the RPG elements its ancestor had, it's still a fun game with an excellent story. Plus, it's retro-future. That's just win.
Eternal Sonata is a beautifully done jRPG in the vain of Grandia. It's not an easy game to describe, but it's chalk full of what you'd expect from jRPGs. The story, score, and art direction alone are enough reasons alone to purchase the game. The gameplay itself is just a great bonus.

Lost Planet. You never knew video games could look this good. The game is a bit awkward, but quite fun. It feels like a mix between Blue Gender and Roughnecks/Starship Troopers.
Dead Rising. Stupid fun, zombie fun.
Rainbow Six Vegas and Advanced War Fighter (1 and 2) have both been successes on the system, and I've heard they great games in their own right. I haven't played them yet, so I can't really say. But they seem to be popular.
Oh, and Viva Pinata. Despite being very childish, it's just an incredibly fun game with gorgeous visuals.

Sorry but Call of duty 4 > R6 Vegas. and yes, I do have both. The multiplayer of R6 is amazing, but once I played COD4 multiplayer, I have not touched R6 since. Not once.
Lost planet is only good one time through, and it's multiplayer is quite flawed. Get a VS, you win. Hands down.
If you are a counterstrike fan, Shadowrun is the game for you. I still play it for a quick paced game.
The Darkness is also an amazing game, one time through though. Not much replay value.
Like to kill zombies? Dead rising is great, over, and over, and over.
First/third person RPG, why not go Oblivion. Ultimate replay value. So much to do, so little time, and the expansion now comes with the game. Be sure to make sure you pick up the newer copy.
Crackdown is alright at best. Only good one time to play.
Condemned always gives me one hell of a fright. Only reason to get that game, is to have something to play between 1-3 AM.
Games to download off arcade.
My Favorite, is Puzzlequest. Litterally I have played for hours before =/ but one of the better puzzle buys. There is also Hexic, and the great Geo.wars.

Dead Rising, CoD4, Bioshock, and Vegas are my only recommendations.
Lost Planet is ok if you can find it cheap.
I don't care for Gears of War myself but for some reason people do. The cover system is great but otherwise I find it to be pretty lackluster.

Yeah, I would recommend CoD4, BioShock, and possibly Burnout Revenge if you like the series.
I haven't played much else, but in my opinion, those games (along with halo 3) take care of everything.

Shadowrun is horrible. No story, no decent visuals, only online play, and they completely and entirely botched the nature of the original RPG. So much potential, so horribly violated.
And Oblivion? Oh
god. Oblivion hardly qualifies as an RPG after the hack job Bethesda gave to it. The only way I can still play that game is on PC with an ungodly amount of mods, and even then only in moderation.
Why, Bethesda? WHY? First Morrowind and now THIS? Whatever happened to Daggerfall?

Crackdown has been a game I have been watching for a while and had a chance to play before. I am pretty interested in at least picking that up, and Mass Effect sounds really good too. Going to be buying DOA 4 soon too, because I know its cheapish anyway and is a great game.

I agree, avoid Shadowrun like the plague.

I personally disagree, I love the Elder Scrolls series and "simplified" or not my favourite two of the series are Morrowind and Oblivion. I still feel they both very much qualify as great Western RPG's, it's all a matter of opinion of course but I'd recommend Oblivion Game Of The Year Edition as a definite 360 purchase it works out cheaper then downloading the extra content from the marketplace.
Don't forget the JRPG Lost Odyssey is out early next year and it's shaping up nicely

I tried to avoid games I knew were also on the PS3.

But yeah, good point. Portal alone is worth the price.

It's sort of like City of Villains in the sense that you're not really evil, you're just a really man person who's inexplicably saving the country side.
Oh yeah, pop on XBL. The marketplace is full of game demos for you to try. Andddd, before I forget, for awesome mech action check out Chromehounds (serious tactical mech action) and Armored Core 4 (anime bangbangblowshitup mech action). Both are considerably different, but oh so fun.

I don't really see online play only as a bad idea.
Considering that's pretty much the only element I play of any game any longer I don't really consider it a negative. Of course I suppose it would be if you're not really into the online play, but to me personally the online play is a huge factor in whether or not a buy a game these days.
Shadowrun wasn't any good though. Warhawk is a great title that's online only, but that's PS3. Or ##### there's plenty of PC multiplayer only titles that rule as well.

I agree with you that Halo 3 is overrated, but im not getting it for the story. I wont even play the story I bet. I'm getting it for Xbox live, I mean who gets Halo and doesn't play it online. That's what Halo is. Without that Halo would never be anything at all, another no-name sucky FPS.

I wouldn't say it's a waste of time. It's going to be a staple of XBL until the death of the 360 as Halo 2 was for the original Box and part of the lifespan of the 360.
The multiplayer is decent enough... Halo BS and all.

And how is Call of Duty 4 a crappy online title? I mean I'm a PC FPS gamer first and foremost, but Call of Duty 4 is an extremely well done title. I can understand if for some reason you don't like it but I fail to see how it's bad in any way. It offers an extremely well balanced online game with many options, and numerous unlockables to keep you playing. There's a great number of gametypes to play depending on what you like, plus all of the matches are fast paced and extremely entertaining in my opinion.
I personally found no faults with it and I've been FPSing since Doom. Also I've disliked CoD until this current title. I really felt that Infinity Ward stepped it up with CoD 4.

Dec 4 2007, 01:29 PM
Yeah, I personally would take CoD4 online over Halo 3 (although I can't deny that Halo has a far better menu system) CoD4 is better because it is deeper, has better maps, and a larger variety of weapons. The only bad thing about CoD4 online is the menu system. What I mean by this is that when I'm playing with friends, sometimes after games, they get booted, and a new party has to be formed. Other than that very minor complaint, the online is very good.

It was a subtle attempt to point out that I wouldn't want a crappy online FPS, but that I would immediately go for the decent or good alternative were it readily available. And it is. So I would.
But meh, I'm not much of an FPS gamer anyways. I prefer games where the main objective is to think, not just twitch shoot and jump. It's why I only ever approach MMOs and RTS' when I go online.

Dec 4 2007, 07:48 PM
There's plenty of thinking that needs to be done in FPS titles... To think you can just go blindly firing and win is silly. Many FPS titles take more skill than just about any other genre of game out there. I think that's quite an unfair judgment. There's plenty of strategy that can be applied even to the most fast paced fragger.
I love MMO's and what have you myself for online play, but you can't say that FPS titles online are for the dense. Many titles, especially the better ones, offer constant challenge and the ability to improve your own game and adopt strategies of your own to help you improve your performance and be more consistent with your kills to deaths and what have you. Not to mention there's many titles that reward gamers who play the game more and do better within the title.

I agree that a lot of the better FPS's require much more strategy than one might think. CoD4 is a good example of this, where you have to customize a certain class and use certain weapons, as well as work with a team during a game to do well.
Also, I'm not at all into MMO's, but from what I hear, MMO's these days take little to no thinking, but thats just loose talk I've heard.

That's pretty much it, for the most part. Even Vanguard (our savior MMO, the game that was to alleviate this) has been dumbed down considerably for the WoW Generation.
I've got my fingers crossed that WAR will take some intelligence to play... And that I'll be able to shank each and every kid who calls it a Warcraft rip-off.

Yeah, I bought it and I don't have XBox Live just yet, though I do want it. The reason I haven't though it because I need the stupid wireless component which I think costs way too much money to bother. Actually, it was not the title I was looking for at the time, but I had a Target giftcard and I'm at an area that doesn't have one in miles, so I took what I could. You know, it is not even that I think that Halo is a bad FPS. I find the first two to be a lot of fun to play in just campaign mode. I would say the same thing about the Campaign mode in this game if it was not so ridiculously short. The first eight hours or so were great, but then the last two levels were just pathetically dry. Legendary Mode is fun none the less, but that is all I can say for the single player campaign.

Do not get the wireless adapter. Not only is it expensive, but it is also crap( dropped me out of quite a few games while playing online). If there is any way for you to use an ethernet cable, do so.
The very final scene in Halo 3 was fun, but the story didn't have the impact that the other 2 games had. I never did play the first to missions (started the campaign on Mission 3 with a friend) so maybe I'm missing some crucial info.
I've heard nothing but great things about COD4, but when I played the PC demo, I wasn't too impressed. Maybe the demo sucked and I should just get the game.

First of all I plan to buy it from Ebay or something else other than through retail, because it is insanely expensive. Unfortuanly, if I plan to do any online gaming it needs to be through a wireless connection. Also, are you sure that the component is to blame for the drops for the strength of the connection? At this place I haven't had any problems using a wireless connection to play games. I used it for my DS and my computer, not to mention stuff I downloaded for my Wii and I haven't had a problem with that, so I am assuming that the component would not either.

I acutally have a wireless G gaming router. I use it for the Wii and DS and they seem to work fine (although I've never played a heavy network dependent FPS on them). The wireless adapter I bought actually went bad, but luckly Microsoft replaced it for me. I'm just letting you know that it drops the signal every once in a while and it will make it look as if you left a game early (which happen to me a few times). Just giving you a heads up.

Man I'm getting Halo 3 to finish the dang fight. I get games not for the online skills. Because until I get effortless internet than I won't care at all about online abilities that and I'm not big on playing with other people. Hence my strong love and adherence to console RPGs or action adventure games. Once I called it lonely, but since life has gotten better I call it not wanting to deal with understanding any gamers but myself.
