So which of the following FF games for PS1 did you like the least?
Chose one, and preferably post your answer as well. Reasons are not required, but prefered.
As for me, my least favorite would be FF9.
While there are many things I liked about the game, there are also some that I didn't like as much as in the other FF games, namely the midget style of the charcters, and most of the main cast.
Zidane, Freya, Amarant, Eiko, Vivi (yes, Vivi!) and Quiina.
I liked Garnet, Steiner and Beatrix though.

FF8 and 9. I can't pick just 1 because they're both totally awful and I hated every moment of them.
FF8 because of the lame ass characters, the actual combat and leveling system and really the lack of exploring for better armors and weapons because of the system. I'm all about having to find the obscure and more powerful items within a game and I felt the " loot " aspect of FF8 was weak.
FF9... I really hated all the characters. Period. The game wasn't exciting at all and I just didn't feel any desire to play.
I never got past the second disc of either title, and I never will.

wow some hate on two great titles. The problem with FF8 and FF9 is they came after the super flashy FF7. If one reads into those game they'll find how great they are. Anyways my least favorite is FF8 not cauz I dislike it but merely because I like FF9, 7, and Tactics(yeap you forgot that one) more.

I'll just go with the numerical main series here, so that's why I left out Tactics. (No one seems to dislike Tactics anyway.)

I'm going with IX. After playing it the second time and... not even sure if I played a third time... I came to better terms with it. Sure, my first time through, I had some fun playing through it, but after I beat it, I just looked back at it, and thought it was a bit disappointing. (Especially the seemingly random final boss.) Most of the characters were unappealing to me (Amarant's the main exception here, despite lack of development), and much of the game's setting and environment just wasn't all that appealing to me, I guess. I can't recall liking the soundtrack that much, and there was nothing too special in the battle system. ...Probably other reasons, too, but I just fail at explaining these kinds of things well.
Despite more recently discovered flaws (through reading anti-FF7 threads and the like), I still love Final Fantasy VII, and consider it one of my favorite RPG's. Final Fantasy VIII is up there as well, as one of my favorites (again, despite flaws, some of which I even agree about). VII and VIII both just had much more appealing characters and settings to me, I guess, which is a big deal. The stories were much more interesting to me, I liked the characters more, the soundtracks were both done quite well in my opinion, and both were just overall more successful at establishing great memories in my mind whenever I think of either title.
I always sound like an outright hater of Final Fantasy IX when I talk about it like this, but really, I consider it a decent game. Decent, but nothing outstanding, in my opinion.

Oh, that's easy: FFIX. Even though it has the best villain out of those 3, the world setting of FFIX doesn't appeal to me at all. I know it's a Final Fantasy game, but as far as I'm concerned the fantasy was wáy overdone in that one. So yup, my vote goes to FFIX.
PS: I dislike Tactics! xP

while the PS1-FF are my favorite of the numerical FF's, IX is probably my least fav of these three!
the characters where good and the story decent, the gameplay failed way to much.
the battle system where no good at all, and I won't even mention Trance mode!
and the triple traid that was so wonderful in FF8, completely destroyed!!!
Post Scriptum: I only tried FF tactic's for an hour or so, but I didn't like it that very much either!

FFVII is my all time favourite rpg so for me it's between FFVIII and IX. For the record, aside from the battle systems I'd take FFVIII and FFIX over the PS2 FF games any day of week. Despite liking both games I found both FFX and FFXII disappointing and I am keeping my hopes up that FFXIII and VS XIII will be as good as they look and restore my faith in the FF series.
As for the poll I suppose I like FFVIII a little more than IX but I still very much enjoyed both titles.

I'm going to be original here and say Final Fantasy VII.
The first thing I hate in VII is the cast. I really dislike the characters and their development, or the lack of it. One member of the cast that had great potential dies in the early stages of the game and the others are just there.
The entire character development is just a pain in the butt.
The second thing I dislike is the setting. Not only does it not live up to the name 'fantasy', but it also doesn't try.
This game (and VIII) should be called: Final Sci-Fi, not Fantasy.
Another big thing I really dislike about Final Fantasy VII is the story. It really does not interest me. It is a piece of crappy cheese with many holes in it.
Final Fantasy VII is a rushed work, that was changed from the original Japanese version and that caused many gaps within the plot.
This also caused the rabid fan boys to believe that Sephiroth was the mastermind and Square's decision to make money off that.
Another reason why I dislike Final Fantasy VII Before I played it, everyone was hyping this game to me, as the best RPG ever.
Not only made it myself really curious, I bought the game a few days later, after getting told about it.
All hyped up, I played this game and found out that this game is nothing more than a mediocre game.
Crazily overhyped and considered by many as the 'best' RPG ever.
Final Fantasy VII lacked consistency and all you were doing in Final Fantasy VII was chasing someone else. That was it. You didn't made decisions on your own, all you were doing was chasing a wannabe villain.
You went to the same place he went and that was it.
PS. Final Fantasy IX deserves much more praise than this. =)

My least favorite was FFIX. I would probably say VII as well as Pes just from what I played, but I never got to get far in it (only a few hours, haha...) since the copy I was borrowing stopped working on my PS1, and also didn’t function on my PS2 either. I didn’t like it much. For the best game evar, it...was disappointing in the beginning, and I’ve lost what little drive I had to play such a great game. I dunno. It’s not like I don’t know what happens in the game anyway >.>
So I would say FFIX. I stopped somewhere in the second disc after having played for two days (about six hours). It just did not grab me. The story was semi interesting, but nothing was so mind gripping that I would even want to continue it. Zidane was one character that I detested, and Steiner was just too stupid; his antics really did not amuse me. I dunno. Princess Garnet was alright, there was actually some substance to her, and what little I saw of Beatrix was really good as well. The other party members (and supporting) were...just not appealing to me.
I dunno. I could go on and add more, I guess, but I’ll just leave it at the fact I thought it was a bad game. Maybe I’ll finish it someday, but for now it shall continue to collect dust until I bother to sell it >.>

By far FFVIII. Loved FFIX by the way and I always enjoy VII, but VIII failed to attract me as much as the others did. I think one of the bigger problems I had with it was that it did not feel like a Final Fantasy game to me when I played through them both times. Granted, I thought that the game was fine, but I was not a fan of the Junction System (and yes I knew how to use and abuse it) and I thought that Squall's love for Rinoa and change of character came too sudden. I did enjoy Luguna and his story segments though and felt like he helped kept the game alive every now and then.
The other problem I had with was that half the characters became heavy weight after half way through the game or so. I remember being at a certain point at the third disc when I realized that a number of characters were not even so much as interacting with each other. It was as if Square forgot they existed.

I'm going to have to say IX... What am I saying I truly disliked IX.
I borrowed the game from a friend who recommended it to me but fortunatly
the fourth disk skipped and I didn't have to finish. But I did like the villian in that
installment.

FF7 was a LOT of fun. Ppl flame the game because of Seph and Cloud fanboys, and yes they do suck, but PLAYING this game is actually FUN. The world map, the limit system, the Gold Saucer, the plot twists, the side quests, overall pace with the WEAPONs and chase of Sephiroth, it was FUN.
FF8 just had this great "feel" to it. It's tough to explain. LOVED the characters, plot coulda been a TAD better but it was good, loved the cities, the world map, the Junction system, and a bunch of other aspects of gameplay and music too.
FF9 is what I voted worst. Couldn't STAND the characters one bit.Awful. Plotline wasn't great. Music is the worst of the FFs IMO. But I continually say this about FF9 that I LOVE: Hands down best FMVs in any game. The FMVs were GREAT (Running from the Petrified Forest, Bahamut vs Alexander, Odin's destruction, Bahamut's summoning, Kuja's rage, and so many more, they were outstanding). But overall I think this is the worst PS1 FF.

I voted for FF9. I enjoyed FF7 quite a bit, and I loved FF8. To date, FF8 and Tactics are the only FF games I can replay without having to force myself to go through them.
The characters in FF9, as a lot of other people have said, didn't feel right. I didn't like many of them, save Steiner, and the whole plot just didn't do it for me. Granted, it was a fun game, but the story, art-style, and characters just didn't cut it.

This was pretty easy for me. I really don't like VIII. I can label things in it that I didn't like (story, characters, battle system) but I can't put my finger on why except on that last one. The junction system made life very difficult unless you spent 30 hours out of the 40 hours it takes to beat the game drawing ##### from the enemies and junctioning in favorable combinations. Then, if you did spend all that time drawing, it's incredibly easy. Simply put, I just did not have fun with that game.
Not quite understanding the IX hatred though. If you ignore the story, it can actually be quite fun. That's what I've found I have to do in order to enjoy most JRPGs.

Uhhhh, i voted 8, becaaaauseeee um. I had to pick one XD.
No seriously, if i had to pick, i'd go with 8. I think when i played it (99 wa sit?) i was a little young at the time for its more serious militaristic storyline and tone. I lvoed FF7 and I found FF8 harsh maybe? Its difficult to describe. I love it now, but at the time, I found it alot harder to get into. Althoug hI did spend every waking moment playing it anyway, since it was better than 99% of games out at the time.

Final Fantasy VIII - I liked the game, but hated the levelling system, and the weapon upgrading system. It blew.
However for memorable moments FF8 would win all medals, like the Mission at Dollet, Assasination of Edea (which of course didn't go QUITE to plan), Escape from the Desert Prison, Missile Base Mission, when Garden becomes Mobile, the Battle of the Gardens blah blah blaahhhh!! ETC.

FF9 simply because of that Excalibur II quest it ruined the whole tradition of FF e.g. grinding, spending time to level up is worth the effort, also stupid chocobo quest (peck the ocean anyone?) and ozma for lameness also card game is too simple and has no benefit!
FF8 I didn't like in the beginning but once you get use to its leveling up system, final weapons and how to stat boost like crazy (255 unjunction rinoa strength anyone) along with Tetra Master (holy war spam) and your a winner.
Personally though the spin off titles like chocobo racing, etc are the "worse" games.

A tie between Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. Neither of the games plot or cast interest me all too much. Especially, the main protagonist of each game. In short, the games bore me and other games interested me much more.
I use to be bother by the hype both games received, mainly Final Fantasy VII, but I stop giving a damn quite a long time ago. The hype and praise of each game doesn't effect the amount of hate I have for each game, like it does with other people.

Tough one. I'm tempted to say VII, but to be honest that'd be more to do with the people who keep overrating it than the actual game itself. I don't like VII on its own merits, but when you add in all of the ridiculous praise the game still gets from it's rabid internet fanbase it just makes me hate it more. So while it is pretty poor, it probably isn't the worst of the three.
I used to like VIII at the time, but looking back at it now I don't see the attraction. The thing's full of unlikable characters, stupid plot devices and a terrible battle system. I still like the card game though, so that one positive manages to keep it just above IX.
Now, IX isn't a completely horrible title, it just that it's as boring as #####. The biggest challenge I had with the game was staying awake while playing it. It's completely uncompelling and devoid of interest. So, while it's a very close call, I'm giving my vote to IX for being so incredibly dull.

Shouldn't people dislike the fans themselves instead of disliking the game more? I find this reason to be main contributor to why people who didn't like VII, end up hating the game with a passion, because of the game fan base. I use to dislike the game with a passion, but it's just a video game and people can hype up a game all they like for all I care, doesn't change what the game is, which in my book, is mediocre.

All of the fanboyism just serves to highlight the games flaws even more. If no one contunied to claim that it's the greatest story ever told then it'd just be another forgettable RPG, but with people banging on about Sepheioth being the best villian of all time, or Aries and Cloud being the perfect couple? It puts every element of the game under greater scrutiny, turning even it's minor flaws into gaping chasms. Sure, the game should be judged on it's own merits, but it's hard to do that when every second person on the internet vehemently believes that it contains the meaning of life.
Although I will say that I'm sure I should have said "dislike" instead of "hate" in the paragraph you quoted. I'm no fan of the game, but it certainly doesn't mean that much to me.

Lem, its because FFVII is the most popular FF on PS1 out there. In the general population, thats an unquestionable fact. So the people that don't like it, feel like they're somehow proving something by shitting on the "fanboys". At least the fanboys are blindly (and in many cases hilariously) enjoying something. But someone else always has to be on the opposite end of the spectrum is guess XD

Well if you ignore the hype and had the game at release or a platinum edition copy the fanboy "popularism" effect should have no impact.
The game is pretty old but it was a good game for its time.
Sure I could ask for better graphics, anime style like tales of abyss would be great or harder bosses (once you knew the morph stat boost and materia levelling trick, its a painfully easy game) but I got my enjoyment from the gold saucer minigames, a relatively engaging story (I perfer the whole Tifa/Cloud subplot then the Aeris thing) and a good menu, combat system then I'll say its was a good game.
Like you said though, its down to personal opinion, some people love a certain series of games, whilst others find it very difficult to engage with.
Like I said, FF9 was a bad game, because it went against the whole ff1-ff8 and X-X2 and so forth logic that grinding should reward the player.
I personally like a RPG where I need to train up and with reasonable challenge. In FF9 the Ragnarok/Excalibur II sidequest (i forgot what it was) completely ruined the game for me as well as the rubbish sidequests.

It was smply that big. Anyone who ever had a ps1 knows the game. The same cannot be said for the previous entries into the series, not over here.
