I couldn't believe this when I read it. I mean I know all those major CEO's talk a lot of ####### but this one really takes the cake. With a console that still has a high failure rate ( I mean yay replacement plan or whatever, but what the ##### ) AND with the current XBL issues which are still running around I was very surprised that Bill felt alright making the statement.
ALTHOUGH, I'll have it noted it's rumored Microsoft may be looking to have someone else actually produce the 360's while they just handle the software aspect... If true this could be good news in the end for 360 users as a more reliable company could be throwing together the hardware for the machine which at this time is it's biggest flaw and major failure.

Hacks,
Microsoft Xbox 360Those who've been visited by the Xbox 360's infamous
Red Ring of Death will be heartened to hear Bill Gates feels your pain. In a
video interview with the BBC, the Microsoft chairman responded to a viewer question about console reliability. After apologizing for the problems and patting himself on the back for Microsoft's free replacement and warranty program, Gates points to what he calls "incredible reliability on the new work that we've done. Our commitment is it will be the most reliable video game box out there."
It's a nice sentiment, but if we're measuring lifetime failure rates, the 360 has
a long way to go to get that "most reliable" mantle. Regardless, we can all probably agree with Gates' sentiment that "we've got to make sure the hardware never stands in the way of [enjoying games]." Amen to that.

It looks like Microsoft is learning from Sony's bad PR moves. They should learn to keep their mouth's shut sometimes. Saying crazy things will only make people think your crazy.

Hahaha XD To be fair, what do you expect him to say? That xbox's aren't reliable? Joe Gamer checknig that interview will be like "##### bill gates said the xbox is reliable, it must be frickin true!". But yea, dumbass statement by Bill, He could just have apologised and said that he'll make sure it doesnt happen again.

Do Wiis and PS3s break 33% of the time?
I didn't think so. Shut the ##### up, Bill.
That said, I still want one of your systems. >_<

Eh the only "reliable" consoles are long gone. No such thing exists anymore. The PSX's had hardware problems, the PS2s(dont know anything about the PS3), and the Faultbox 360 can speak for itself.

Hahaha, Bill Gates has guts. That, or he's oblivious to his failure rate. Even at their OS'.

PS3's and Wii's are reported to have less than a 1% failure rate. I posted about it awhile back.
Never had a problem with mine, neither has my roommate... We play fairly often but not like machines or anything.

Hopefully without jinxing myself(touch wood) I have had my 360 since April 2005 and I have played it ALOT with no major issues. I have had a PS1 since 1996, a PS2 since two weeks before launch in the UK and it still runs as well as the day I had it and I have had a Gamecube since launch. The only faulty console I have ever had was my PS3 but to be fair I personally think it was damaged in transit. Maybe I'm lucky either that or I just look after things better than others

360's do have issues though my local Tesco has
two 360's on display and they're
both red ringed that's two out of two consoles screwed(100% failure) and my friends replaced 4 360's in a year hopefully the new Falcon models are better.

The only system I ever had trouble with was the original x-box. Went through 3. PSX and PS2 still managing to work somehow but I know they had faulty lasers and did break down, but not at the level shown by the 360.

Let's be honest. It was never going to be reliable because they rushed to get it out before the PS3. And microsoft don't tend to make the most reliable of... well, anything. I made sure to insurance on mine. Wouldn't have gotten it other wise. Everyone I know has had at least ONE thing go wrong with theirs.

A few months back I was in EB Games and tried a demo on the display X360 when it suddenly froze. The reset button didn't work either so I asked someone who worked there to take a look at it, and he opened it up and tried to get it started but it wouldn't start. The screen was just black. Not sure if it red ringed or whatever it was, but I only got to hold the controler for a few seconds before it happened. That was my second experience with X360. The only other time I played one was also on a display console when it first came out. Thought I'd try it out some more, but that didn't last long. =p

Before you get a Red Ring, the system starts to just freeze often. If you have a console from 2005, you're chances of getting a red ring are extremely high. The first system I had didn't work out of the box, so they replaced it ( shipped it and had it back in 5 days). The problem with the new console I got was that it was still a 2005 model. That one also broke down. I now have a new model that was made in september of last year, so I think I finally have a good version. It also seems that this one is much louder than before, but I haven't had one issue with it so far.

Louder? Do you mean louder as in the weird banging noises that consoles make, or in another way? Because over the past couple of years my PS2 has gotten to the point where it almost syncs up with some songs, and it drives me up the wall, so I dunno if I would be able to enjoy gaming if it's that bad.

My 360 has a pretty constant humming that sounds like a jet engine mixed with a lawn mower. It's at it's loudest when reading from a disc. The PS2 sounds more like dragging a brick on pavement, but picking it up every few steps for those in between silences.

The slim PS2 makes more sound than the fat one. I never noticed any sound from my old PS2, but I can hear the slim one at times. But it's mainly the disc spinning, but it's only noticable when there's little or no sound coming from the tv.

I have the old PS2 and it's quite loud. It seemed to get louder over the years. And yes the PS3 is quite which is nice. My guess is that it will follow the PS2 and get louder with time, but my 360 is one loud piece of equipment.

Is it louder than Dreamcast? That thing could wake up the neighbours.
LunarMaster
Feb 19 2008, 10:19 AM
I don't think it's as loud as the DC, but it seems to have a very consistent hum. My last system wasn't as loud, but it also only worked for about a year.

My stupid family are abusing my poior PS3, they play it for like 6 hours straight, then let it rest for about 30 minutes, then go at it again. I'm seriously thinking of taking it when I move out for college, though it'll be a shame, considering I play it on my parents Sony Bravia.

Christ sake what do you guys do to your consoles because I have a fat PS2 and it is quiet as hell. You can only hear the fan when it is quiet. I had a PS1 and it was quiet as well. You guys have to stop abusing your consoles.

I have a launch PS2 and it doesn't read CD's, blue PS2 games, or PSX games anymore. It's barely holding up (still runs regular PS2 games). Put some good use to it.
