I've never heard anything about this game before, but hey it's an
new and hopefully exclusive RPG for the PS3 that we'll see in the West.

One of the few original RPGs announced for PlayStation 3 thus far is Sega's Senjou no Valkyria. Developed by the creative minds behind Sakura Taisen, the game is an attempt to fuse strategy and action elements. One key element that allows protagonist Welkin and his platoon to remain competitive in the Second European War scenario is the weapons development facility. There, players can use the money they have obtained to develop various weapons. However, powerful high-level weaponry will obviously require more than just money to build. Furthermore, the facility allows Welkin and Co. to enhance their tank. Various parts of the vehicle, such as the chassis, can be leveled up and thereby strengthened at the facility.
Trailer http://uk.gamespot.com/video/942165/617921...icial-trailer-1 Senjou no Valkyria will be available in Japan sometime this spring.

the graphics (which are really cool) remind me a lot of the cutscenes in FFT: War of the Lions (I'm assuming they use the same effects) so for some reason, whenever I see screenshots for this game, I always think its a PSP game until I realize where the pictures are from.

The gameplay is centered around BLITZ -- "Battle of Live Tactical Zone systems." In the command mode, players move and give commands to each of their units, who then shift into action mode, where actually control them on the battlefield from a third-person-perspective. As a whole, however, Valkyrie of Battlefield uses the general rules of a strategy simulation game, where battle is turn-based and movements limited by the character's AP (action points).

Just saw something about this literally a couple minutes ago. I doubt I'll come in contact with a PS3 anytime soon, but regardless, this definitely looks neat. Upon closer inspection, I realized it's not just the usual cel-shading style, but actually fully-animated artwork? Haven't seen it in action yet, but if that's really the case, I'm highly interested.
On the note of the artwork, I'm diggin' this whole theme that seems to be going on here, mixing medieval combat with modern-day warfare, plus some rather tech-y looking equipment (like that drill-sword thing).
Eager to see how the game plays out.

Valkyrie of the Battlefield features a unique turn-based battle system called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones). In-between turns players are treated to an overhead map view, but zoom in to control each individual unit on the battlefield. Movement and other actions are handled in real time, though limited by an AP gauge that varies for each character. This gauge can recharge even during the same turn as you operate other characters. Additionally, players are in direct control of the characters’ aim, allowing for headshots and other advantages. The environment also factors heavily in combat. In an urban level, for example, snipers can be sent onto rooftops to eliminate unsuspecting enemies below while tanks and other units can outmaneuver enemy positions via the streets.
Each character in the game fulfills a unique role - for instance, Alicia Melchiott is a mid-range rifle unit, while her male companion Welkin Gunther is a tank driver. There are also a host of other units including short-range machine gunners, heavy artillery, and snipers.

Dear Sega, please bring this game to the US. Signed, everyone. That's really all we have to say after
looking at the latest massive batch of pictures released for Sega's
Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles ... or whatever the official name will end up being. Not only is the sketch-art style fantastic, but the gameplay promises to be something fresh for 3rd person shooter and RPG fans alike.
We see some new characters in these pictures and what appears to be
the valkyrie of the battlefield. Of course, it may just be our overactive imaginations. Sega, please. No more

A new 7 minute video that demonstrates the story and gameplay.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/180299.html
It seems to have a Paper > Rock > Scissors system, where Infantry is strong against Leader units, while Leader units are strong against things like tanks and other big vehicles, which in turn are strong against Infanry.

And it looks like you have an AP gague similar to Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter, that determines how far you can move and possibly how many actions you can perform in one turn.

Some new screenshots.
The game looks great. Beautiful artwork, and the game's setting looks very interesting. The battle system and the strategic gameplay makes it seem like a mix of Tactical rpg and traditional. Leveling up and upgrading your weapons and skills also looks like fun. There was also a video showing that you can team up with allies by standing next to them to create more powerful attacks by fiering at the target together. The music also reminds me a lot of FF XII. As does the look of the targeting system.
Overall the game is looking very interesting, and I'm looking forward to playing it.

Valkyria Chronicles has optional installPosted Apr 14th 2008 6:30PM by Majed Athab

The
mandatory installs of the past few months have shaken us up quite a bit, making us keep our eyes peeled for any future PS3 games that may have the dreaded feature. So, when we heard that the install for
Valkyria Chronicles was an optional one, we sighed with relief. Still, it would've been better if there was no install at all, but it looks like this is the way it's going to be. If you've noticed that your games and their installs are starting to take up too much space on your 40 or 80 gig system, then it would be a good idea to start
upgrading that HDD.
Valkyria's install is sized at 3.3GB and will cut down regular 15-second load times significantly. The game will be out in Japan soon on April 24, and an
Autumn 2008 release is scheduled for North America and Europe.

PS3 FanboyAdmittedly, I haven't been paying too much attention to this game's progress. (Not like I'll have a PS3 anytime soon anyway.) Found this in one of my Yahoo widget things, though, and figured it'd be something you'd all like to hear about.
15-second load times being significantly cut definitely sounds nice, but with all these game installs, it sounds like a hassle. Especially with an install weighing in at 3.3 gig? Sheesh. Personally, I think I'd take the 15-second load times, as long as they weren't ridiculously often.

Wish I could say something more than "interesting," but I fail at vocabulary expansion. ^^; So yes, very interesting. Loving the graphics. Great example of how the border between game graphics and anime animation (sounds a bit redundant, but can't think of another way to put it) is definitely thinning, if not vanishing entirely. The music is certainly fitting, and nice on the ears. The gameplay footage has brought several questions to mind, though it definitely looks good. I'm curious to see how the counterattacks during enemy phases are set up/executed, as I am curious to see how characters will differentiate from each other in combat (since there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in the early-game footage). Looks like a nifty combination of strategic third-person shooter and SRPG elements, though.

Game is great so far. Way good.
THE AWESOME:
+Lots of attention to detail, not just graphicallly, but with the physics of things like grenade tosses and stuff.
+A surprisingly high amount of strategy involved. I mean, we knew it was a tactical RPG and stuff, but if you don't pay attention or just try to power trough the other army, you will get your ass handed to you.
+Vyse & Aika cameos. I'll take some videos when I'm back home in Takamatsu. I'm in Osaka for Golden Week. Bitches.
+The presentation, graphics/sound, game progression, everything's put together really well.
THE SUCK:
-Snipers have like, such ridiculously small movement range. This is probably to keep them from being overpowered, but man, it just doesn't seem to make much sense that such a class can't move very far during a turn.
-Some of the shots/throws don't seem consistent with the aiming. Like, I'll fire a missiole from one of my anti-machinists, right? My entire scope will be locked onto a tank not too far in the distance, right? I should hit it, yeah? No, oft times, some obstacle not actually quite within your path will block your shot, such as sandbags at your feet. You'll just like, blow up the sandbags three feet below the gun you just fired. It doesn't make sense. It's really hard to explain, and takig a video of it would be a pain in the ass, but you'll see what I mean. You'll hit odd stuff when you don't expect said stuff to logically be a factor in your shot.
As a note for those of you who commented on special attacks:
-Yeah, if you're right next to an ally, they'll chip into your attack sometimes. I've noticed it more with people who are the same class, and people who are friends. You can see who someone is friends with on their stats (Vyse & Aika are friends of course ^^).
-Other special aspects attach themselves to each character. For example, some might get a slight defense boost by standing on certain types of terrain, being near a certain friend, or whatever. Or perhaps an accuracy boost when srrounded by people of the same class. An attack boost when surrounded by the enemy. Stuff along those lines.
The classes are:
Rifleman:
The most well-rounded of the classes, with good range, good accuracy, good power, defense, and a very large movement range.
Machine gunner:
They carry machine guns instead of rifles, so they get mre shots off per action, but each bullet is slightly less powerful. Generally, though, they're able to inflict slightly more damage than a rifleman. However, they have less than half the movement range of a rifleman and a tad less HP.
Anti-machinist:
So-so movement range, but a long range weapon to make up for it. Though for all its range, this weapon is really hard to be accurate at a distance, so you gotta get close. These guys are best for taking out tanks and repair guys, not so much for infantry soliders like riflemen and machine gunners.
Repair dudes:
Their best ability is that of repairing damage to your tank, which is key, because if Welkin (who drives the tank) falls in battle, it's Game Over. They have above-average movement and are equipped with a rifle, though they have a noted lack of HP.
Snipers:
You know the deal here. Long, long range rifles with power to go for the one-shot kill, if it gets 'em in the head. Though it's not as easy as one might imagine (certainly not like sniping in, say, Metal Gear or some such ^^), because depending on level and such, the bullet can feasibly go anywhere within the scope--the closer you are, the more likely to be where youre crosshairs are, though. So sniping is, just as it would be realistically, very dangerous (or useful, depending on which side is doing the shooting), but it's not a sure kill.
The game flows by taking players to different pages of a book, where they highlight pictures and hit X to start a cinema. (there's no going out-of-order, it's pretty linear). Most of these are story segments, and some are battles. There seems to be a pattern of 1 battle per chapter so far, 7 chapters in. Battles can be like, over an hour long. But they're dope.
A sort-of equivalent of level grinding possibility shows up in the form of skirmishes. Here, players can take their dudes in and fight a battle on a previously cleared battlefield for tactic development, experimentation, and oh yeah, experience points. You don't get very much though, and the amount of required EXP to level each class increases one a scale that would make long periods of grinding require gargantuation amounts of patience. So that's good. Take that, powerlevelers. (OldSchoolGamer will hate this!)
All EXP gained from a battle can be taken into the HQ, to a sergent guy, and the player chooses how to distrubute the points among the classes. I, for example, have level 7 riflemen right now, level 6 machine guns, level 4 anti-tank/machinist, level 3 or 4 repair guys, and level 7 snipers.
Anyway, that's all I can say right now, like 10 hours in or something. About? Whatever, I'm in Osaka so I can't play it for a few days. Will comment more later and answer questions if anyone's got any.

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3167758&p=37It's easy to get all misty-eyed waxing nostalgic about Sega's glory days as daring arcade innovator and platform holder...especially now that the company seems to have purposefully morphed into a tepid Activision clone. Back in the day, Sega's Japanese teams produced cutting-edge titles in every genre, with a particularly impressive lineup of role-playing games emerging during the '80s and '90s. Unfortunately for Sega, its console sales always lagged far behind Nintendo's, so classics such as Phantasy Star, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Skies of Arcadia never reached the massive audiences they deserved. Had the console wars fared differently, perhaps Sega could've supplanted Square and Enix to lead the lucrative Japanese RPG market.
When viewed from that somewhat tragic, sepia-tinged perspective, Sega's new PlayStation 3 strategy-role-playing game Valkyrja Chronicles seems like an unexpected godsend intended to remind us of the publisher's past glories. It's a creative, clever twist on an established genre that helps to fill the gaping role-playing gap that's keeping Sony's pricey console on permanent slow-burn status in its native Japan.
The game instantly grabs your attention with its classy cel-shaded visuals that employ Sega's "Canvas" engine --subtly animated pen strokes give the graphics a distinctive storybook look that's absolutely charming. Likewise, the game's quirky story and setting -- an alternate-reality WWII in which the Eastern and Western European nations battle for the rich fuel reserves of Gallia (think: Holland) -- impart a fun, fanciful spirit not far removed from the works of renowned anime creator Hayao Miyazaki (Porco Rosso, Spirited Away). In this war, both men and women become unwilling military conscripts, so having everyday citizens among your troops lends the proceedings a tender, personable vibe. You'll encounter over 50 different fleshed-out characters that can join your squad, ranging from a scandalous '30s-era lesbian (she gets big boosts by fighting alongside other ladies) to Skies of Arcadia guest stars Vyse and Aika.
But as charming as the game's visuals and narrative might be, gameplay stands firm as Valkyrja's most engaging aspect. The constrictive hexes of traditional strategy-RPGs have wisely been tossed out, replaced by a fluid free-movement system: You draw from a central pool of CP (Command Points) to position characters and attack, so you're given far more freedom on the battlefield than you'd expect. Expect more interactivity than you're accustomed to, as well: Valkyrja invites you to manually aim shots like in a first-person shooter -- go for headshots for max damage, or try foot-sniping to immobilize foes. Factor in a rudimentary cover system, and you'll start to see that Sega's guys in Japan actually took inspiration from Gears of War.
But don't think that the more action-oriented gunplay detracts from the tactical depth. The game offers a vast variety of unit types and subtypes (for example, soldiers can be infantry, scouts, snipers, or support) that can be customized and leveled up how you see fit. And unlike many strategy-RPGs, Valkyrja doesn't require you to endlessly grind your characters' levels in order to proceed. Here, you'll generally discover that there's one perfect tactical solution to each stage that can be sussed out by properly playing to your units' strengths.
It's unclear what changes Sega intends to make to this fall's domestic Valkyrja release, but we're hoping for a top-notch localization that plays up the game's distinctive European setting. But regardless of how its release is handled, this game proves that the spirit of old Sega persists. A few more like this, and perhaps the impossible dream of a Skies of Arcadia 2 or (dare we dream) Phantasy Star V might not seem quite so far-fetched.
