I've just recently got into reading manga starting with the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" series. I instantly fell in love with it once it shined its heavy character development and deep philosophical storyline. I am currently half way through the"Battle Angel Alita" series and I am having a great time with it, but I am now starting to worry what manga I will go through after this!

So I come to you all for help. Could you recommend me some titles?

Basically, I am searching for thorough character development accompanied by a deep, thought out storyline - philosophical, if you wish. Those two are the most important to me. I like to really get to know the characters. It doesn't have to be action and does not have to be set in a specific time frame. I do although prefer a more serious tone rather then over-the-top, wacky sort of theme, but a little bit of comic relief here and there doesn't hurt.

I know I am being hardly specific. Let me list a few anime titles in which I enjoy to give you an idea:

Elfen Lied (I really wish they would translate the manga to English)
Spirited Away
Serial Experiments: Lain
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Let me know if you have any recommendations!

go pick up deathnote

probably one of the best manga series on the market atm
if not, it's surely one of the most popular at least

i think its just me but i like the whole .hack mangas. legend of twilight, reborn i think is one of them, and there are like 3 others. i wanna get them all!! lol and there is one i think called enchanted or something. im not sure but that one is good
Red_ryaN
the only .hack manga I've heard of (and read)

was the legend of the twilight bracelet series
A.I buster series
and another birth series

and yes, they are all amazing, LOTTB is what got me into anime, and manga tbh

Rurouni Kenshin is a good one. the anime didn't cover the final arc, which imo, really fleshed out the characters.

the only manga (that hasn't been mentioned) I can come up with is Full Metal Alchemist that fits your description!
Servant Saber
Claymore. It's a really awesome, violent, and deep fantasy anime. It's really well drawn, too.
Hellsing is also shaping up to be a really kickass ride at the moment.

If you liked Battle Angel Alita, I'd also recommend Last Order, if you haven't read that already.

Death Note would have been a perfect series, if not for a holier-than-thou ending which pretty much ruined the build-up that it had amassed throughout the storyline.

I'd recommend Monster instead. If you like thriller, that is.
Servant Saber
It is awesome, by the way, that someone else is reading the NGE manga, which is drawn and written by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, probably one of my most favorite artists ever. I can't get enough of how well he draws Misato, Rei, and Asuka. Seriously. He draws awesome ladies. This is from volume 11, just to give you an idea.

Another good read is Full Metal Panic! which is only nine volumes and covers the first season of the anime, as well as a few bits and pieces of Fumoffu, and some original stuff as well.
Ken Masters
You should try Mobile Suit Gundam Ecole Du Ciel. I just started reading it again, the difference of how the mood of the story changes within six volumes is amazing. From fluffy almost light-hearted, to backstabbing galore is so enthralling.
Crimson Cloud
Try Berserk manga. I'm not sure if it's finished though, I stopped somewhere along the way.

Ya, I haven't read too much manga, I've seen the whole Akira series (really more interesting than the movie...) I'm really into Bleach now. Best part, FREE!!!! www.bleachportal.net and go to the Manga section.
