ADV Cancels 37 Titles
Anime Offerings on 'Indefinite Hiatus'
Canceled
January 28, 2008

In a letter to retailers ADV Films has identified 37 anime properties including Devil May Cry, Gurren Lagann, and Pumpkin Scissors that are "on indefinite hiatus, effective immediately." The list includes virtually all of the properties that ADV has announced since its financing deal with the Sojitz Corporation (see "Japanese Investment Bulks Up ADV") in late June of 2006. The properties that ADV has announced (and released) since then are from a variety of anime studios but they were all licensed through the ARM Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan Contents Investment, an investor group that included the Sojitz Corporation, the Development Bank of Japan and KlockWorx. In its letter to retailers ADV explained: "ADV has suspended certain elements of its former alliance with ARM Corporation, which financed the acquisition of these titles. ADV is working closely with various constituencies with the goal of restoring most if not all of these properties to our release schedule at a later date to the extent possible."

The list includes properties that have already been released in their entirety such as Nerima Daikon Brothers, Guyver, and 009-1, series such as Pumpkin Scissors, Kurau Phantom Memory, and Red Garden that have only been partially released, and eagerly awaited anime such as Devil May Cry, Gurren Lagann and 5 Centimeters per Second that have been announced for later this year. The complete list of ADV anime properties on hiatus is:

Coming on the heels of Geneon's departure (see "Geneon Ankles American Anime Scene") the ADV announcement is more bad news for the reeling North American Anime Industry. For the past few years ADV has been the number two anime company in the North America, with a solid 12-13% share of the anime DVD market. Recently though ADV has been showing signs of stress. It has pulled its support from its industry-leading collection of anime clubs and two weeks ago announced that it would cease publication of Newtype USA (see "Newtype USA Ending"). The collapse of ADV's deal with ARM does not necessarily mean the end of one of the trailblazing American anime companies, which was founded in 1992. ADV still has an extensive library of titles including the ever-popular Neon Genesis Evangelion. Still the fate of ADV subsidiaries such as The Anime Network, the Newtype successor PiQ (see "Newtype Successor Broadens Focus"), and the ADV manga publishing program that includes the bestselling Yotsuba&! manga remains in the balance as does the future of one of the pioneering powerhouses of the American anime market.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed about Gurren Lagann. Seemed like things were going pretty smoothly.
The Evil Dead
So how the ##### am I supposed to watch the new Guyver series? I was waiting for them to release it all in like a box set before buying.

Someone PM me with wonderful sites to get glorious anime. =/

Ugh. Was already pretty upset when I discovered that Geneon went down, so this doesn't exactly make me feel any better. D: (Even though I don't really recognize any of the titles, other than Air Gear and DMC.) I hope they can get things back on track.

Le Chevalier D'eon, Welcome to the NHK, Utawarerumono, and Innocent Venus...you shall be missed.
Lost Seraphim
What a shame. I was just looking into N.H.K. the other day too, after thoroughly enjoying Yoshitoshi ABe's work in Haibane Renmei.

I sure hope that ADV doesn't shut down, as much as I hate some of their productions, it would be bad for the North America's anime market. Considering Bandai would be (if I am correct) the only anime distributor in the market. In anycase, I'll be watching this unfold closely.
Nash
Whoa, so much for seeing Utawarerumono on a Region 1 DVD release. tongue.gif

Cancelled licenses, huh. That'd make life a little less stressful.
Servant Saber
To clear up some misconception, ADV has dropped NONE of these animes, nor their liscences.

They're having some trouble with the actual companies that sold them the liscences, and are suspending the releases until they can clear everything up. I imagine that, by the time summer rolls around, they might have things worked out.

WHIEW!!!! Good. I was looking forward to Devil May Cry. Hopefully Dante's as cocky as he was in 3 instead of how he was in 2 (which sucked more than Utah during our dual meet against them)
The Evil Dead
Thanks for clearing that up Sammy... I was confused for a bit and slightly disheartened enough though I'm not really into anime that much anymore. The new Guyver series sounds too promising to pass up though.

Does this mean no more anime women for TED?
Servant Saber
Neither ADV nor my employer, Suncoast, has canceled the Pre-order I have down on the first DVD of Gurren Lagann.

Yes, I work for a company and help manage a store that sells this stuff. We got a letter from ADV saying to not put out any displays but to at least sell the first volume.

Which means they haven't cancelled it, and likely anything. And TED, Guyver has already been completely released. You could probably still find some places that are selling it. It's not like they're telling us to pull stuff from the shelves.
The Evil Dead
Really? Every time I check Best Buy they only have like the first few episodes. Not being a huge anime dude I haven't really looked into it. I'll check online. Thank ya.

Nah. I think that's one thing you can count on. In fact the only connection I really have with anime anymore is through the, uh, adult orientated material. smile.gif
