Guardian: UK plans legally enforceable game ratings

According to British newspaper The Guardian, a new classification system is set to be introduced for video games sold in the United Kingdom. The proposal would deem the rating system legally binding, making it against the law for retailers to sell games to persons below the recommended age rating.

The Guardian does not state who would be responsible for administering the new ratings, although a likely candidate would be the British Board of Film Classification, who spearheaded the Manhunt 2 ban. Although we're hesitant whenever the government tries to step in and tell us what to play (that whole censorship thing), perhaps with a new system they can implement a rating that would allow games like Manhunt 2 to be carried. (Hey, we can dream.)

The proposal also goes into ways the government can restrict children from seeing unsuitable games (don't forget all new consoles have family settings) and internet content. A commissioned review of violence and video games is due next month.

As this only only effects kids I'm all for it since I don't think kids should be playing adult games anyway, I know won't allow my boy to play adult games unless he's an adult lol. It could possibly lead to games being seen as an adult entertainment medium instead of just being looked at as something that's "just for kids".

As for retailers getting legally bound in terms or selling to minors this isn't much different to what was in place for years before when it was just the sales assistant that was held responsible and fined.

In regard to Manhunt 2 staying banned it's no real loss I played the uncut version and it's a pile of shite.

Whatever moves games closer to the same playing field as movies is fine with me.

Ehh, I don't really see this as doing anything. I mean, a kid can get the game one way or another. And if anything, the law-breaking aspect would just make playing those games far more attractive to the younger generation. And ou know, there's plenty of other games out there anyway, so just buy a couple of those and kill some time till you get old enough to buy the other ones.

Wasn't Ireland like the first country to copy America's tobacco law?

And yeah, I pretty much agree with Logain here. It will only make things look more intertesting. Remember when your parents told you not to do something and you did it anyway, because it was so interesting? Same with the games.
If they can't buy it in the store, they'll have other options, I mean the internet is a vast space with endless knowledge.

What works in my opinion is take a closer look to the parents.
They should stop the kid if they're playing violent games, or any game rated above their age.
The kid that killed the other kid in the UK, is no fault to the developer whatsoever, as the story goes that the kid that died lended the game to the other, which was originally bought for him by his own parents.

Whether Manhunt 2 is a crappy game or not is not the issue. The issue is that parents let their children play those games and something needs to be done about that.

But, as cloudycat said, this will most likely, only effect the children. As long as they stop banning video games, I am fine with whatever rule that comes up, to prevent children from getting 16+ games and killing other children.
That does not include raising the price of mature games.

Maybe Ireland was, maybe it wasn't, I dunno. But I live in Northern Ireland, which is governed by the UK

That's about right. I don't see what the big deal is, either. I'm not surprised ever since Manhunt was banned.
Bloo
Well, banning manhunt didn't help the situations anyway.

It just made the situations worst.

Banning became an issue and soon everyone start downloading the game instead lol.

So yeah.

"Legally enforce game ratings or not. The downloading still doesn't stop."

Lance.

Games already level the movie playing field.

If I remember they outdid flicks last year in terms of cash.

But yes I don't mind this myself if used properly like the MPAA ( Even though that's a might be corrupt ).

Means that we won't have ##### senators like " THESE GAMES ARE EVIL " if such a thing comes to light in the US. M Games would get the same treatment as R rated movies and people would be carded if they are underage, and politicians could shut the ##### up.

That can be insulting to americans.

Meh, I'm not really bothered by it since its never really been a big problem to begin with. Kids these days listen to rap on the bus at the age of 5-6 so it really makes no difference where they get influenced by violence.

BBFC certification is better than the MPAA on my part though.
The Evil Dead
Until they ban movies like The Evil Dead.

Yeah, I meant more in terms of being completely identical (or at least damn close to it) in terms of sale regulations, restrictions, advisories, whatevers. So long as they're equal with movies in their distribution situation, people liek Fox News can't bitch like they do.

Good im sick on not being able to get games like manhunt evan though i still got it biggrin.gif and mark echos it will be good becuase they have to put the graphics of game down if they make a 18 rated game into 16+ cuz they blurr out the blood and other things it will be good
