Well it recently came out in Europe and I wondering your opinions, current progress on the game.

In FF1 currently I'm a level 65 Knight, Ninja, White Wizard, Black Mage at final chaos shrine but tackling the optional dungeons starting at the earth shrine (killed 3 of the bosses on bottom floor last one being two-headed dragon)

FF1

+
- Magic is actually useful (level 8 Full Life, Flare and of course haste (1) temper (3) ftw
- Optional boss music is rocking
- Good combat, I don't actually just use one move continously
- Quite challenging although this could be a disadvantage as explained in -
- Bestiary, FMV, option dungeon, good graphics, music
- Cheapish price £19.99 each
- Finding out how FF all began e.g. you get a little canoe, cid, a joke at zelda in menold (link is dead tongue.gif) and classic enemies like Ochu and goblins also how phoenix downs only restored 1 HP and sanctuary to revive if no cash for phoenix.

-
- Story could have been better if heroes were less randomly generated but still interesting.
- Random battle rooms where random encounters occur like every step whilst bats block you
- Getting lost easily (entered earth shrine at level 25 was highly amusing >_>)
- NPC text is way too NPC (repeat hell ..)

It's fine overall. It's a pretty well-done remake, I suppose. I mean, it's a 20-year-old game, so it's not like, mind blowing, but it's good.

Actually this was one of my primary beefs. Both FF and FF2's PSP versions are pretty small, in terms of filesize, and could have fit on a single UMD with plenty of room to spare. So separating them and charging for both -- especially when Final Fantasy II still sucks just as much as it always did -- is a little bothersome. II should be tossed in as a freebee for those that buy the still-cool original, if you ask me. But hey, Square knows people'll buy it anyway, so....

Perhaps, but for its time, Final Fantasy was one of the most epic game stories around, without a doubt.

Heh, yeah. That stuff got annoying then, and is still annoying now. Sucks most especially when backtracking

I'm not seeing the problem here. >_>

Oh come on now xp.gif
The Evil Dead
I want to play these really bad... They're considering bringing PSP titles to the PS3 though, so I may have them sooner than I think. I've honestly almost gave in to getting a PSP recently because of the growing number of RPG's available.
AlliedG
plenty of rare ones too I recommend Tales of Eternia, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth and of course FF Tactics War of the Lions.

I didn't find FF2 too bad to be honest (only played like 10-15 mins) perhaps because it has proper story characters and some nice music.

The combat system them is quite a shock though, no levels and I feel too much like a blue mage e.g. lose hp to increase hp and level up spells by spamming them >_>

The bestiary, artwork and bonus dungeons were good additions too.

Finally 8-bit theatre explains my woes about NCP oh so well ^-^

Any time the hands-down, absolute best way to level up is to hit the attack command, but then cancel -or- to strategically wail away on your own party members...something is broken.

But why does it stand out so much in FF1? I'm curious here. The game...
-Is 20 years old
-from an era when there wasn't a whole lot of dynamic conversatio with NPCs to begin with
-STILL managed to put in a lot of characters whose comments change over time, including the Dancer in Cornelia, always with the helpful tip for your current point of the story.
-This problem exists to this day in...nearly EVERY JRPG known to man, dude laugh.gif

True, perhaps I find it too mechanical or something like that or perhaps the citizens can be too helpful ohboy.gif

Ah, so you've got this qqualm with almost every Final Fantasy game, and most RPGs in general. I gotcha. I thought your beef was limited to FF1, which would've been silly.
AlliedG
I guess I notice it less in more up to date RPG's as replies will change after some major event (which does happen in FF1) but somewhat less.

Currently in lifespring grotto and just beat Atomos level 73.

Oh also who was in your team bomb?

I've got

- Knight
- Ninja
- White Wizard
- Black Wizard
Bomb
I rolled
Fighter (Knight)
Red Mage (Wizard)
Black Mage (Wizard)
White Mage (Wizard)
The Evil Dead
The shame is I was going to buy these games but I've read they're pretty much utter crap.

Anyone think otherwise?

Define "utter crap."
The first one: It's Final Fantasy. If you've played it, you've played it, and this version will not be a "new" experience, aside from the slightly updated music and the newfangled PSP sprites.
The second one: has always licked balls. This version is also not a new or different experience.

They're well-done in the remaking department, but said remaking was done to 20-year-old games. You can update the visuals and remix the music all you want, but when you pop these in, really, it's not going to be much different than other times you've played Final Fantasy*

(*= except that it doesn't do the thing from the NES version where if a target dies, other characters who were attacking it get their turns canceled. But they've been rid of that since the PSX remakes.)
AlliedG
got rid of that bit bug, each potion taking up indivudal slots (99 one item slot as is standard now) and drink command I believe.

FF1 is a good solid game and the actual main storyline, coupled with bonus dungeons e.g. labyrinth of time make it a good game. Just be prepared for dungeon, grinding and don't expect much character interaction. (after all the 4 guys are just random dudes)

Finding out the origins, storyline is also quite interesting.

FF2 is a painful experience, mainly due to MP issues (oh great I've just beaten this boss on a high-level floor, got low hp and now no mp to teleport out to relative safety ...) Also too many times when I wander into high-level areas and just owned.

FF2 is also a amusing experience as to level yourself up, you need a tendancy for self-abuse (seriously) .. i.e. casting spells, attacking yourself until you die and then reviving.

However I applaud squaresoft at the time for trying out new ideas and the storyline isn't too bad. (actually proper characters now and portraits) and chocobo XD

The "lv up" system in FF2 could have been much better if stats were assigned in a certain area along with normal EXP (instead of removing). E.g. you level up you choose which stat gets bonus growth.

I have the FFI and FFII bundle on my SP and they look and work fine. I was impressed by the remake on the GBA since they cleaned it up a bit, of course PSP put that out of the water, the opening video for FFII was also pretty impressive for a handheld. And yes, I did end up getting FFII on my PSP, I was bored and didn't know there was a Tales game on the PSP, sue me. The PSP version looks a hell of a lot better obviously and has a few extra dungeon's to my knowledge but if you have it on the GBA then I wouldn't bother with it honestly. They should have bundled it like they did on the GBA since neither game is exactly spectacular.

And on a side note, FFII's leveling up system makes me want to kill myself even more than FFX's did. XD
AlliedG
Woot beat Omega at 3 am last night at level 73 happy.gif

Healaga, Thundaga, Temper, Haste = Murasame =D
