Probably going to buy it anyway but I'm too lazy to look and IGN does nothing. THE GOGGLES ZEY DO NOTHING.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1C7pRaq_mM

EDIT - info straight from wiki

Chaos Wars is a tactical role-playing video game that was released by Idea Factory in Japan in 2006. Promotional art for the game is by Nishimura Kinu.

Chaos Wars is a crossover between several companies' console role-playing game series: Aruze's Shadow Hearts, Atlus's Growlanser, Idea Factory's Blazing Souls, Gakuen Toshi Vara Noir, Spectral Force, Spectral Souls and Hametsu no Mars, and RED Entertainment's Gungrave and Samurai Police/Shinsengumi Gunrouden.

First year student of the private Tsukioka School, Kusake Hyoma, heard from his grandfather the legend of "when the gate to the alternate world opens, an incredible green glow can be seen, and the ancestors of the Kusaka family will step on this land." Although he did not believe in this, he was surrounded by unexplainable light when exploring the hill behind the school and found a cave. Thus, the prologue to an unkown adventure begins.

no ted's link to gamestop. when i was writing that i didnt realize you had posted.
Eva
I never knew this game was announced for localization! It's only a month away! I'll be sure to pick this title up once it's release.
The Evil Dead
Thanks Cloudy.

It's Idea Factory, but I'm going to buy it anyway. Strategy RPG's are my friend.

Also the gamestop link works fine. You're just on ludes, Voy.
FusionNoJutsu
Man I can't wait. Been looking forward to this for a while. Even though my own company got it pushed back so they could market it as an exclusive. Bastards. I'm itching to play with Yuri again and those combo attacks look insane.
Athrun
Oh, so this is the game with Yuri and Karin.

I remember seeing this a loooong time ago. I didn't know it was going to be released outside of Japan. Excelent news. Now I have a new rpg to look forward to besides Persona 3 FES in the next few months.

Screw Shadow Hearts 2's endings. This is how it should be.
Wein Cruz
Be sure to post any gameplay/story tidbits you find.

I'm looking forward to kicking a$$ with Carmaine and Julia. xD

The game is a Gamestop Exclusive now so they've been pushing it back to market it as such. >.<!
Nash
The more delay they'd force this game to go through, the more likely it is that the only ones who'd be dealing with that degree of exclusivity are those Gamestop outlets themselves.
The Evil Dead
I can handle the delay. I'm super broke and building up a hell of a backlog of games to buy... WHERE IS MY IRS REIMBURSEMENT CHECK!?!?

It might have bee deposit directly into your bank.

I'm currently working on finishing the Journey in PS3 FES. This delay doesn't bother me.
Crimson Cloud
Looks tempting, I shall get this one. You can never have enough anime RPGs.
The Evil Dead
Anyone else get their copy today? I'm glad I put mine on hold at the time I did because the Gamestop I frequent ( One of the new stores that looks better than the old if you have a bunch in your area ) only was shipped 2 copies and a bunch of people weren't going to receive their copy as he said they may only receive one more shipment of a few more copies.

Glad I went in early. Gonna start playing soon. smile.gif

Also the back of the box is hilarious if you read the text.

def. let me know what you think as you get more into it.
The Evil Dead
I've played afew battles in the game and outside of the fact that it's cheaply made, and that the dictionary in game that offers help is clear and you can't read it because of the screen backround it's pretty solid. The characters are pretty funny and fortunately you can choose to have the original Japanese language.

Movement is circular and no grid based. You can do like team attacks and counter attacks... Reminds me a bit of Disgaea so far but I haven't spent a lot of time with it. Probably gonna put in a couple more hours and I'll throw more thoughts in later.

I like it a lot though. It's not perfection or anything but I'd say it's worth buying ( Unless the game ends in like 10 hours or something. )
Eva
I'll be picking up the title later today.

The game battle system more like Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom than the typical strategy style that's Disgaea.
Lost Seraphim
Both nearest GameStops either aren't carrying it or have it exclusively backordered on request, from what I can tell. I'm going to contact some of the more out of the way stores come payday.

I wasn't even aware Sacnoth/Nautilus closed their doors, so I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces from Shadow Hearts brought into the tactical realm.
The Evil Dead
Is anyone else amused by the poor translation as much as I am? The dialog between characters seems perfectly fine but then I get options like " Go to next " after completing a battle. Go to next what? Considering you get to choose your missions and worlds to do them on what exactly is NEXT out of that? Makes no sense.

Doesn't take away from it or anything just find it to be a bit funny.
Nash
Next whatever of your choice?
The Evil Dead
There is no choice. It just says go to next.

The translation is just laughable in some spots, I guess you'd have to play it to find out.

I mean here is what it says on the back of the box as selling points:

" You must learn the basics of battle "

" Then you can complete the quests ahead of you "

" Recruit the best team available "

" Defeat your enemies and win the prize "
LunarMaster
Oh god! I just saw how horrible the voice-acting for this game is on Kotaku. Is the gameplay worth it? How about the soundtrack?
The Evil Dead
You can select the Japanese language track so that saves it.

The music is pretty lame ass but the gameplay is fine if you like SRPG's and even though the translation is poor in some spots the actual character dialog is on par and pretty entertaining. It's worth buying.
Nash
The game seems impossible to find... I'm glad that it's so bad that I won't have enough desire to put some effort into finding it. biggrin.gif
The Evil Dead
I don't recall saying the game was bad at all. In fact I said I like it quite a bit.

The translation is just laughable in some spots and I don't like the music are the only faults I've found in it so far. The actual character dialog and everything is fine though from what I've played and I enjoy the characters and gameplay quite a bit so far.

i listened to the english voice actors on youtube i think it was and your right, they are TERRIBLE.. i had flash backs of Star Wars Episode III
The Evil Dead
I probably wouldn't be playing the game with sound at all if you couldn't select the Japanese language track. No joke. It's awful.
Athrun
Yeah glad to hear it has an option for Japanese voice overs. I'll look into this game soon after I finish P3 FES.
Eva
Six Shadow Hearts characters so far. One villain from the series. The Shadow Hearts series is well representative in Chaos Wars. Alice, Gepetto, Anastasia and Kurando joined recently. Yuri and Karin joined much earlier and Joachim joined shortly after. This game has plenty of characters to choose from. I'm trying to train all of them, but it's becoming more and more difficult.

Shadow Hearts currently has the largest playable characters. I'm surprised GunGrave characters were in this title, too. I'm quite familiar with the majority of the characters in the game, even if I did not play their game. I never played a game with Okita Soji and Hijikata Toshizo, but I know of the character from various anime and real life history of the person. Most people into anime tend to know Shinsengumi, without playing the game.

I'm hoping more familiar Growlanser characters appear since the main character from the first game appeared, but the first game never made it to U.S. I'm just don't know him too well.

I enjoy the game, but I notice the awful translation. I seen better translation in fan sub groups. You expect better from a company.

Is there any way to run away or exit and restart battles for power leveling purposes?
Eva

Is there any way to run away or exit and restart battles for power leveling purposes?

No. Just do mission and searches to level up. Dispatching members will help out with money on Dispatch maps. You don't need to complete missions either. They're randomly generated and the rewards tend to stink. Just go for money rewards. No, you can't run away from battles. You should save often.

Entering a battle the only way to refresh the map list along with the shop.

I also suggest picking 5 characters you're comfortable with and using them. Do not train all the characters. Leveling up isn't too difficult. Equipment helps a lot from a offense and defense point of view. You can train characters later. Be warn, that characters will be forced into battles, even if under level. Certain battles call for Okita, for example, to be on the battlefield. If you power level, it shouldn't be too difficult, but power leveling just time consuming and a couple waste of time. Proceed through the game until better equipment made available.

I ended up fighting a solo battle with Grave. Just did a handful of battles, he was up to par for that battle. If I trained the whole time, it was just a utter waste of time. Just pick five characters and do the story battles. If it's too hard, do a quick random map run. Remember to keep equipment up to date. Try to take advantage of characters and abilities that force equipment drops. The equipment enemies tend to wear is usually better than what you can get at the store until the next upgrade.
The Evil Dead
If they're randomly generated are they indefinite then? Meaning you can always do some sort of mission outside of the one's listed as " Main "?

If so that's pretty sweet and leveling might be easier that way.

I had another question about the game but I totally forgot. It's not very helpful as far as the gameplay is concerned.

Yes.

Another piece of advice. Do not save in the middle of main storyline missions. I told you that characters are forced into battles, this could be deadly if you're force to solo a battle with a weak character or you're having a difficult time winning a battle with only four or three good characters since the other characters are characters you do not use. Training is not difficult, I just won't waste time training for a storyline map. If a map too hard, then train.
maxxumas
Ok...so I finally have the game Chaos Wars and I have mixed emotions about it. First, the bad.

SHOOT THE VOICE OVER COORDINATER. No, seriously, drag his(or her) ass into the middle of the street, lace their final cigurett with cianide and pain huge red targets on their head, heart and nuts and comprise the firing squad of drunken country farmers with bad eyesite and acid filled water guns. If you've played the game, you understand what I mean, Now, don't get me wrong. The Japanese voice overs are just fine. Many of them fit the characters perfectly. But the english ones...god almighty. It sounds like what you'd get if you gathered a bunch of half drunk college students together that have never watched a single cartoon or anime in their life and they are phycology majors. The voices are just that bland and bad. And lord help you when you hear the voices for one of your favorite characters. (I'll kill the bastard that did Yuri's voice, I swear to god I will)

>.> Ok, I had to get that off my chest. The 2nd bad thing about the game is...well I suppose its the anticipation that was built up about it. Granted, there were no commercials for it and almost no plablicity in the US for the game but for Strat fans that had heard about it, I'm pretty sure the premise was quite tasty. Then to have the game pushed by like 3 times and finally come out a week ahead of the last push back date was kinda pissy, specially when you see the final outcome. Now, again the game is pretty ok but really, its more of a tool to get you interested in the other games that are exploited in this one.

Now for the good things:

Well, the system is fairly easy to get into and combat...doesn't really have to take a long time. The overall combat system is pretty well done I suppose althought it has its flaws as well. The storyline seems decent enough to keep you going (if for no other reason but to see what other characters will be dumped off on your already redicioulsly mismatched and linar party)

In the end, the game is a fairly good game to get if your a strategy game fan. But If I'd known what I know now, I'd probably have waited till the price dropped a bit and then bought it. Oh well, maybe Idea Factory'll use this game as a springbored in the US to gain favor for some of the other games that are displayed in this one. I'd love to play the Spectrule series and other things like that.
The Evil Dead
Idea Factory won't generate any fanbase with this game. It's a very limited release and as I'm sure you know only available at Gamestop. Actually I doubt it's available even there, now.

The company that got it out here in the states is extremely small and relied on friends and family to do the English voice work from what I've read.

I'm glad it came. It suffers from some problems but the gameplay is solid, which is what matters to me.

IF games were released in the U.S., but they've been under the radar and released by NIS America and other publishers.

Idea Factory:

Generation of Chaos (PSP)
Aedis Eclipse: Generation of Chaos (PSP)
Spectral Souls (PSP)
Octomania (Wii)
Black Stone (X-Box)
Chaos Wars (PS2)
Spectral Force 3 (Xbox 360)

Generation of Chaos, Aedis Eclipse, Spectral Souls and Spectral Force 3 are part of the Neverland universe.

The price of the title likely would have never went down beyond 40 U.S. dollars.

There's no U.S. branch for IF. An outside publisher released Chaos Wars along with there other titles that have been released in the U.S. I don't see IF's title having the popularity for IF to setup a subsidiary company in the U.S. to release their titles. The next title they're releasing that could become popuar is Spectral Force 3, but I do doubt IF will setup a subsidiary company and start releasing their titles more regularly, but if SF3 become popular and gained a following, then you never known. Who would have thought Disgaea would have become as popular as it did here along with the other NIS titles before NIS decided to setup the subsidiary company NIS America?

Moving along, I finished this game during the first week I had the title. I replayed it and unlocked the majority of characters artwork and completed nearly every thing possible that I known of to date. I only need to recruit two characters to complete the game with every character recruited. It's impossible to recruit every character in one cycle.
Athrun
I started playing the game today. I haven't gotten very far, but so far so good. I get the feeling that it'll be fun building up your characters, and it seems like you get equipment pretty easily since enemies drop them.
I haven't bothered trying the English voice acting. I've heard a bit of it in video clips before (Yuri's voice for example), but even if the English voices weren't this terrible, I probably wouldn't have bothered since the Japanese voice actors virtually always do a better job at giving the characters life.

One thing I'm worried about though is a trend in poor translation I've seen lately. "Such a old thing." Usually you'd have expectations on the translators Japanese skills. But since when do we need to worry about the translators basic English grammar that even 10 year olds should know? I noticed similar things in Mana Khemia as well, and I'm not sure where this is coming from. Growing up, I remember the majority of the rpg's, whoever translated them, didn't have these problems with the English language. So why now?
My guess is that with the growth of anime and manga fansubs, more people skilled in Japanese are available for translation jobs. People who may be great at Japanese, but seem to have a hard time with some of the basics of their own language.

Granted I've only noticed this once in the game so far, but I suspect I'll see a few more, like with the last rpg I played.
It's not like I'm a grammar nazzi, but I'm used to seeing zero mistakes like these in pretty much all the rpg's I've played, and this is a mistake a 10 year old shouldn't even make. "an" comes before a vowel. "a" comes before a consonant. That's not too hard is it? If you make a profession out of translating, then you should at least know that much.

But in the end I'm just glad that the game has been released in English.
The Evil Dead
It was brought over by a small group there are a few translation errors. :: Shrug :: I get your point, but it's more than likely something minor that was overlooked. Makes me wonder if they even had like a human proofread the script.

Most larger titles are pretty good about it but you know... If I get like a NIS or Atlus title sometimes I just kinda expect little goofy grammatical errors or mistranslations on occasion.
Athrun
I see. Perhaps I just never noticed much before, or maybe I mainly played games from major rpg companies, but this felt like a bit of a recent trend to me. Anyway, I hope it's just something that was overlooked. And it's not like it's a major problem (bad English voice acting is worse), but it's mainly because it was such a simple grammatical error that it bugged me. And because I saw them on a few occasions in the previous game I played, so I thought it might appear more than once.

Anyway, in case someone wants it, here is a character recriutment FAQ from gamefaqs.
There may be some spoilers, so beware if you don't want to know who can join you.

QUOTE
There are a total of 50 characters in the game. Unfortunately, choices force you to only ever get a max of 45.

Multiple characters with +'s in a row means choice of one. Each section is hopefully listed in order of appearance.

Defeat Shelly with Rin's Thousand Arms, defeat Lygen with Hyoma's Guilty Break, and get an A-Rank in the first battle. In the second battle, defeat Lygen with Hyoma. If done properly, this should allow you to recruit Shelly.

Makes me wonder if they even had like a human proofread the script.

You would think they proof-read the game before releasing the game. Got nothing to do with being a small company regarding proof-reading since it can't be that difficult or time consuming. I doubt it will hurt your expense bill in creating the game that badly, if it even noticeable.

I don't mind myself. Just a point being brought up by most people. Most people just bringing it up, but don't mind too much, but there is people that are grammar nazi's and will be pissed off about it.

You might have not notice it that often. It's just too obvious in Chaos Wars not to notice that recent examples of poor grammar in video games will pop into your mind, like your Mana example. There's likely been grammar issues before, just not as noticeable. By far, Chaos Wars was terrible from a grammar stand point by far compared to other RPG's.

Not as much bad dub actors and actress, since that's preference. It's more like the dub actor or actress needs to have emotion and majority of characters in Chaos Wars didn't oppose to their Japanese counter parts. That's bad voice acting to me when the actor has no emotion in their voice. It's a preference whether you like the voice. To a degree, whether a voice fits a character not is preference, but can also be contributed to bad voice acting.

Again, you wonder if they even proof-read their script. Even I am not that terrible with my grammar these days.

If you want more awful grammar mistakes, then check the dictionary out. A couple of entries aren't even complete sentences. That was baffling. xd.gif

If you stuck with character recruitment, then ask here. I recruited every game through 2 cycles myself.

Well I'm on Chapter 3 now, following that character recruitment guide above, and so far so good.
But it feels like I'm getting too many characters to keep even the ones I like leveled up. And some times I can't decide who to use in battle. Wish there was an easier way to level people up, either by allowing more team mates in a battle, or like when you send one of your team members out on a quest on their own. (But those don't show up too often)

I have my main three though, Hyoma, Rin and Hiro. Then I switch between Karen, Wallace, Carmine and Shizuku
To my surprise I ended up not using Yuri much, but I may start to again.

Just pick 5 and level them up. Don't waste time leveling more characters up during the plot. Later on, you can level characters up by equipping better equipment, but at this moment, don't bother. Beware, characters are forced into battle often. Grave and Hyoma are the characters who solo a couple of battles. There's a number of character force into battle during other plot missions. You can work around having one less member, but the sole battles could be the end of you.

Steva I will level them all up using random battles. I HAVE THE POWER!

Don't bother. Just get through the game and when you have better equipment, leveling up is faster and easier.

The game not that difficult. You can sole with Hyoma when he's strong enough.

I dont know what it is about this game, but every time I've played it, without fail, I've fallen asleep after just a few battles battles. Not always during the evening or night mind you. Because of this I've progressed very slowly. Last night I managed to play two battles before I fell asleep. I'm on Chapter 4 right now. I will try to get to Chapter 7 soon, because one of the characters I want is in Chapter 7.

anyone played this on ps2? Apparently its a crossover of a buncha jRPGs but the problem is we didnt get half the games that are crossed over neither in the states nor in Europa.

i just bought it today since i heard it has really low amount of copies made. Also god Demon Stone since i heard it has RPG elements and it was mint/cheap.

I got about halfway through the game, but haven't played it since. Which was a few months ago.
The game itself wasn't much fun, but it has interesting characters, and I wanted to know more about them so I kept on playing. I'll probably finish it one of these weeks.
