After the advertisement of the exit of Persona 4 on Playstation 2, Atlus reveals us some first information on its baby. One thus learns that the play will be close to the system of Persona 3, excel moreover, with a successful principle of separation between the real world for the phases of dialogues and course to the college, and the alternate world which will be based on keeps on the floors generated by chance, and thus of multiple combat. In more of the implementation of the weather in the life of tous.les.jours, the editor announced that the development was finished to 85%, that there will be more than 180 Persona has to call upon, of multiple ends to free and a lifespan of 60 with 70h in straight line, knowing that Persona 3 easily exceeded the hundred hours when one wanted to finish it at 100%. The exit of this probable last great play of Playstation 2 is fixed at July 10 in Japan.

Wow, awesome. I didn't expect to see screens from the game so soon.
I don't see any names for the characters.

But this persona seems to be named Jiraiya. Cool name. (Naruto reference)

And this one is called Izunagi. Looks a bit like Thanatos with the clothing.

The battle system looks familiar.

Not sure why the characters seem to have glasses in some screens, and not in others. Maybe glasses is the new 'thing' in this game, like the evokers in P3?

This girl seems cool. Looks like she uses kung fu kicks in the screenshot. At least that's what it says.

And in this picture it looks like you'll be able to answer "Yes" or "No" during certain events. Seems to be a new system in this game.

Glad to see that the school is back.

Another new thing for this game seems to be different weather conditions each day.

Looks like time of day and weather will have a big effect on the environment. (It looks like the main character is carrying an umbrella in the last picture.)
Speaking of the environments in the game, from the looks of the pictures above, it looks like the towns might be bigger in this game. I get the impression that the camera will be moving around more as you walk through town. So there might be more exploring in this game.

I wonder if Persona 4 will see a fall release in the U.S. if it's slated for a July release date in Japan.

i agree, that would be very cool.

Heavy Japanese influences with the personae names, which is quite a change from the ones in Persona 3.

If the gameplay is anything like 3, then I'm sure to enjoy this as well.

Hopefully it'll be published in English too.

This week's Famitsu magazine arrives in Japan with tons of information about Persona 4, the next installment of the quirky Atlus RPG series for the PlayStation 2. The sequel to one of the best RPG experiences on the PS2 so far moves the action from the city to the countryside, with the story taking the form of a murder mystery, chock full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing. The game includes a weather forecasting system that indicates when a murder is going to occur. Atlus is packing tons of gameplay into the new title, with 60-70 hours of gameplay and over 180 Personas (Personae?) for you to play with. Persona 4 is slated for a July 10th release in Japan, with a North American release almost a no-brainer, considering the reception of P3 in the states. Follow the link beneath the gallery to Akayuki for more scans from the latest Famitsu.

well this is starting to sound very interesting.. murder mystery, weather patterns, and 180 personas.. thank you atlus, i do love you. Persona 4, Disgaea 3, Chaos Wars... yummy
The Evil Dead
I'm really disappointed with the success off Persona 3 that Atlus isn't sitting down and reinventing the wheel to throw this on the PS3.

Whatever though. If you already have the game engine, just keep pumping them out I guess.
Flame
Looks similar to persona 3, which I guess isn't bad. The storyline seems to be a lot darker with talk of murder and such... I thought P3's storyline lacked the dark setting of previous SMT games. I'll have to keep an eye out on this one, but I have a feeling that it's going to be like the jump from Shadow Hearts Covenant to Shadow Hearts:FTNW in the way of basically the same game with different characters, storyline and a few new features.

Atlus probably knows that PS3 doesn't have much of a selection, and knowing that P3 sold as well as it did, they're playing it safe and putting it on a platform they know will sell.
[poll: how many people where, who've played Persona 3, actually have a PS3?]

all in all, i'm anticipated this alot. one of the last games for the PS2...
if summer release in Japan, you can expect a holiday season/early '09 release stateside. tongue.gif

I wonder where Persona 4 falls into in the timeline if you include Persona 3 and the Anime Trinity Soul, maybe in between?

Dont be a jerk Bomb, he clearly meant Disgaea 1 where Atlus published it and...Well cant really save the Chaos Wars one.

I'm almost sure we'll be getting Persona 4, since P3 was so well-received in America.

I also hope this means Atlus will bring Growlanser 6: Precarious World to the U.S. as well. =)
Nash
Was Growlanser V even that successful? Definitely nowhere near as successful as Persona 3, which was more than enough to justify a localisation of FES!
cloudycat
So RPGFan were correct in their news of Persona 4 back January afterall- Other P4 thread - that's good news to say the least. The PS2 really does have the best Japanese RPG catalogue ever seen on consoles, I wonder if any of this generations consoles will match it?

No, it wasn't.

Persona 4 localization isn't in question. It's when it would be announce. Growlanser VI on the other hand been out since June 2007 and you haven't heard a rumor of the game being localized. Since it's a direct sequel of V, it doesn't help that V wasn't that well received here in the U.S. Why bring a sequel to a game that didn't sell all that well?

The SNES and PS did release many RPG's, but a number of them were never localized for the U.S. or Europe. There's a number of RPG's on the PS2 that never reached another region outside Japan. I won't be surprised if PS3 manage to surpass the PS2 RPG library. I won't used the word "best", I would use the phrase "widest selection of RPG's to choose from ever for a console outside of Japan." since what you or I find the "best" won't exactly be the "best" to anther person.

Well, I wasn't talking about what was best for one person to the next, nor was I talking about individual RPGs or tastes. I was talking about the PS2 having the best choice ie catalogue(or rather a more complete list if you like) available for Japanese RPGs especially in as you said the West. Although I'd still be quite surprised to see a bigger list of of RPGs on both the PS1 and SNES(individually) localised or not, but I'm certainly not about to start counting so I'll just be left to speculate on that one until someone shows me otherwise. Plus since that choice is pretty damn varied there's plenty of various RPGs to choose from to cater for pretty much all JRPG tastes hence my point best catalogue of JRPGs.

To be fair, Growlanser: Heritage of War didn't come out in Japan until summer of 2006, yet we didn't get news of it being localized until around this same time last year. So based on that trend, it wouldn't be surprising if we get news of Growlanser 6 being localized before this summer.

Anyway, I'm also very excited about the possibility of Persona 4 being localized, since P3 was a really unique and fun game too. I hope they make a more exciting dungeon than Tartarus, though. The battles in P3 were great, but that dungeon could've been better. =p

- The story takes place 2 years after Persona 3, and the game will have 3 new protagonists, who are all 2nd year high school students. There will be over 180 demons in the game for you to recruit.

Well there seems to be room for some story connections or cameos between P3 and P4.

Awesome. I didn't expect there to be a long promo video like this already. I'm also happy to hear that the same kind of music will be used for this game. I'll post more about the trailer later, but it looked very interesting.

Ah, looking at that field shadow icon... reminds me of something.

Here's hoping that they'd improve the variety of enemy designs in this one. It was unthinkable that despite its gajillion amount of floors, Tartarus had very limited design choices. sad.gif

TED, stop being a PS3 miter. not everyone has $500 they're will to shell out for- especially then the PS3 game library is still very weak.

So I watched the trailers for Persona 4... although to be honest it's just Persona 3.5... and I'm not overly impressed. I do love persona 3 but this just honestly doesn't look that great. I hate the fact that they have used the same engine with new 'features' placed here and there (You can tell a company is desperate because they always stick a 'fishing' mini-game as a new feature *sigh*).

I was hoping that it would go back to having a darker feel about it like other SMT games and like the darker story lines of the previous Personas but I didn't really see much of it in the trailers. I'm pessimistic about this title, mostly because I know it could be really good and spectacular. I wouldn't have minded waiting longer and having a brand new game with persona trademarks and it being on a next gen instead of Persona 3.5

Hopefully I'm wrong and it's an amazing game....

Well that might be a bit of a high standard to have concidering a majority of sequels are done this way. While you might call this Persona 3.5, someone else might think that anything but a continuation of the same engine should not be called Persona at all, but be treated as a spinoff. Such as the case with DDS and Nocturne for example.

Anyway, the fact that you don't look forward to more of the same is understandable. However, this is exactly what I wanted. I really enjoyed Persona 3, and I think there are still more ways to enjoy this concept.
That it's coming out fast I think is good mainly because there are not that many new games coming out for the system any more.

I'm sorry for asking Atlus to develop for a current generation console. My apologies for wanting to see the next generation of RPG's start making their way to the PS3.

Why is the PS3 library weak? Gee... Maybe because developers like Atlus should be pumping out new RPG's on engines that take full advantage of the PS3 hardware instead of just letting them flow out for a last generation console because the engine the game is on is already completed and used?

It's $400 now anyway, most of you shelled that out for whatever console you got last generation unless you hopped on late, and I have every right to demand that RPG developers like Atlus start playing their hand to its fullest and develop on a current generation console in which they can expand their ideas even further than before.

Don't think that's really asking for much. smile.gif
Voyou San
I like the fact that the game looks and from the screens plays a lot like Persona 3. I love love love Persona 3, i thought they did a great job but yet i thought they still had so much room to expand on the current game and mabye they have done that with Persona 4 so I am pumped. And who knows, it might still be darker than you think, it is a murder mystery isnt it?? smile.gif

and i agree with TED, take this game to its full potental and develop it for the ps3. Show everyone what the ps3 can bring RPG wise. If there is one thing the PS3 is sorely lacking, its some RPG power. But, its not a big issue cause my ps3 has backwards compatibility. smile.gif
Nash
Someone asked for a Persona 3.5? Reminds me that FES is coming here next month, right? tongue.gif

Well, as for me, Persona 3's gameplay was probably my #1 among the 4 SMT games on the PS2, so this is definitely good news.

I'd rather not have this game keeps P3's gameplay AND be released on a next-gen console, because that's just asking for awful feedback. Like, in the case of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn and the rush for a release on Wii.

This one is just gameplay, intro of Igor, some random scenes, not bad (the japanese voices are HORRIBLE lol)

After watching the vids, it seems like the eyeglasses make the Shadows visible or something, or they help constrain the Persona,

Battle looks nearly identical in terms of all-out-attack, spells, knock downs, etc

Believe it or not, I'm actually not that excited for it. Somehow it just seems kinda the same... The characters seem uninteresting to me, I feel like I've seen them all somewhere before, and the battle system is fun but I dunno, the only real thing I'd be looking for is an AMAZING story, and it'd be hard to pull one off better than P3.

I'm sure it'll be a good game, but it'll be tough to try to be BETTER than P3.

Could happen. A number of games receive special edition release, like Persona 3 and Final Fantasy X. If Persona 4 sells well, I can see a special edition being released. I could see a special edition being release even if it wasn't popular. It just won't make sense to release a special edition for a game that sell well.

Dunno if that's new or not; the only Persona 4 trailers I've seen are the behemoth 17-minute motherfather, and the old one of the guy morphing or whatever. So it seemed new to me. If not, sorry.
