Ok, it's no secret that Ovan's in .Hack GU Vol. 2, so I'll just reference other things generally to preserve those who haven't played it.
So ya, ending = ovan behind you + splat on screen.
Who gets the splat???
If it's Haseo, that's kinda lameo because you can "play" him afterward like normal... and "other person" can be in your party. So what's the deal with it??? Or do I need to just go out and get Volume 3??
Other question. What's the purpose of the Doppleganger stuff???

If you fight and beat the Doppelganger in all three Volumes, you get the Strongest Armor in the game for Haseo.
You also get a weapon, but you can't use it until fairly late in the game.
And don't you know what suspense is? The ending was supposed to do that.

I can't imagine why. Volume 1 sets the story.
I missed out on the Doppleganger quest in volume 1. If you want to get every thing, then you need to return to volume 1 and defeat a Doppleganger to obtain it's Twin Blade weapon. Even if you missed the Doppleganger quest in Volume 1 or 2, you can fight it and be rewarded. Fighting the Doppleganger in Volume 2 will give you a Edge Punisher and Flick Reaper weapon and a key item, even if you didn't fight the Doppleganger in Volume 1. In Volume 3, you'll receive a the Doppleganger's guns for Haseo, but not sure if you need the key item from Volume 2 to get the guns.
Still, if you fail to fight the Doppleganger in every game, you can get the best equipment in the game, which would a powerful accessory and armor for Haseo. If you fight a Doppleganger, you'll know it has strong armor and regeneration abilities. You gain them with this equipment. To be honest, this armor is not required to beat the game or even defeat the end game dungeon. It's just make Haseo even more powerful than needed.
Though, I known people like to be over power and would love to have that armor. Myself? I just couldn't be bother to return to volume 1 after missing the first Doppleganger.

I was expecting something more for painstakingly going through three entire volumes of the same RPG back-to-back...
... I don't know if I'll ever find the drive to wade through IMOQ's 4 volumes now.

It should be noted that the guns you get on vol3 are pretty much the best weapons in the series if used properly.

Need to get my vol. 1 back from my GF so I can fight the doppleganger, right now I'm just breezing through the story. Though I truth be told, I haven't picked up vol. 2 ever since I decided to finish Odin Sphere.
