FF7 Timeline:
Crisis Core > (Last Order) > (Before Crisis) > Final Fantasy 7 > Advent Children > Dirge of Cerberus
Now in Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Sephiroth was defeated and it seemed like Jenova was completely eradicated too, thus after watching FF7AC before DoC and Crisis Core came out, I pretty much thought things were wrapped up. I figured Dirge of Cerberus would be some simple spinoff, and they'd milk the cow with Crisis Core to give Zack some background. But there's something new they've created to continue the story:
Genesis.
If you think about it, his connection with Deep Ground is priceless.
In Crisis Core we already know that he was sealed up by a legendary warrior. Now looking at the timline above, Dirge of Cerberus is the latest game to come out, and he appears in the secret ending of the movie still alive, carrying Weiss' body speaking to Weiss as if he may still be alive. He also says that they're not done yet, meaning Genesis still has some world domination plan in mind.
Crisis Core SPOILER TIME!!!::::
Loveless is not complete. The 5th act is missing, so I'd assume in the next game they'd create something to discover the last act and have it play out in the game. It also appears as though there still maybe Jenova cells in him. And in Crisis Core there is the INCREDIBLY ambiguous scene of the Goddess that is the embodiment of the LifeStream. This entity is also a side boss, meaning she's an actual person.
But bottom line, Square has set themselves up with DeepGround and Genesis because the series is not over. And I'd bet you ANYTHING they'll find some way for Sephiroth to come back too/

In the Final Fantasy Retrospective over at Gametrailers, (
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23449.html ) it was mentioned that Final Fantasy VII is a series/franchise completely different from any other Final Fantasy game.
Square President Yoichi Wada said that the universe of Final Fantasy VII would be around for the next 10 years, which would bring it up to the 20 year anniversary of the PS1 game.
I would suspect them to maybe do one more remake and then retire it completely. But, with everything that has been released under the Final Fantasy VII franchise, I am pretty sure they could go on for a long time with many open plot points.

Believe it or not I do too because they're doing a very good job with it. They haven't killed the franchise at all, only made it better. Like, when I think of characters now, I think of them from the spinoffs, not from the original game, becuase from the original game I wasn't too fond of them the way I am now.
Im glad to hear itll be around till 2017 tho thats dope
When they do make a sequel, I have like, this weird request for them haha. I want them to bring Sephiroth back... and make him GOOD. Like get him the FSCK out of Jenova's control. If anybody's seen Kenshin, and rememberes Shinomori Aoshi how he was always Kenshin's rival and wnated revenge to prove he was stronger till he was finally beat. Then he like, completley changed his outlook and admitted defeat, and traveled with Kenshin trying to atone for his sins.
I'd LOVE to see Sephiroth do that. Like come back, but no longer possessed by Jenova, and with Genesis trying to destroy the world Sephiroth and Cloud and every1 now wants to protect it.
He's just SO goddamn cool in Crisis Core before he was possessed I really really miss that and would love to see him back like that again, just becuase it makes him 100% more as a character.

It's like Hollywood. Gotta keep the franchise going.

Well there was a timeskip at the end of the game and even at the beginning of AC. About 400 or something years from that point where the story left off, and there could be plenty of fillers in between.
