Camelot's studio heads address the future of its RPGs.
by Craig Harris
March 31, 2008 - Camelot might best known for its Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games across the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Game Boy platforms, but there's still a following for its traditional, fantasy role-playing game designs. Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age were two fantastic RPG titles on the Game Boy Advance, but we haven't heard much out of that series since the end of the second chapter back in 2003.
We recently had the opportunity to chat with the Takahashi brothers, head of Camelot Software Planning, about the team's upcoming Wii Love Golf title, and we couldn't resist poking the two about the next game in the Golden Sun series.
"Honestly, just like your readers saying that they want to see a new Golden Sun, a new tennis game, a new Shining Force, well, everyone in Camelot feels the same way -- we really want to get these games out for you guys," they said. "Just like how we said our staff has been hoping to create new RPGs, we are definitely in the planning stages of doing something interesting. We hope that you will be looking forward to our future game. We ourselves are looking forward to the next Camelot RPG as well, just like you."
A cryptic answer, to be sure, but it's obvious that Camelot hasn't forgotten about its RPG roots. Hopefully we'll soon see the third chapter of Golden Sun hit a Nintendo platform soon.

Haha I remember discussing this awhile back with you ^^ Even though I haven't played the second one yet, I agree; Camelot need to get Golden Sun 3 out now, on the wii, because Golden Sun could potentially have been Nintendo's flagship rpg, and its slowly disappearing into memory. Two extremely good games, and no follow-up? Crazyness I tell you XD

@MoK: Do you have a source for that? Or did you mean that it probably will never come out (because I would then assume that those are other games people want, but have never been made)?

Which is ironic, because I'm pretty sure Duke Nukem Forever actually is on good track to come out now XD is this good karma for GS3? I hope so <3

I'd like to see it come out on the DS, personally. Seems like an excellent platform for it.

Perfect platform if you want to basically do the same thing again. I really think its time for nintendo to take GS and do big things with i, and t make it one of those nintendo games. I guess they could stick with the handheld, pokemon's main series has stuck to it, but it'd be coo lto see a full fledged epic 3D rpg.

I’m not sure I’d really want to see it on the Wii though, haha...I don’t have anything against the system, but if they would make it for Wii, I’d like to be able to use a GC controller or something...Not to sure how well I’d like having to get interactive (physically) with my rpg. =p. I could go with the DS though. It’d be for a similar experience as on the GBA, so I have nothing against that. But, despite that all, I suppose I almost would prefer it be on on of the large systems just because they could make it longer, have better (perhaps even orchestrated) music, etc...

haha, don't get me wrong >< I do NOTsuggest the wii due to interactivty etc, or anything to do with the wii's "advantages" XD Its the same with the new ToS game - I'd rather be able to play it regularly. I simply would lvoe to see GS done on a large epic scale with the soundtracke tc as you mentioned to do it justice. I played the 1st and lvoed it and i honestly thin kit could be a big thing, and imo its always bigger on the main consoles. If that makes any sense, (im kinda drunk XD)

I would love them to do something big and epic with GS as well, but just not on the Wii. I like the novelty of the console, but somehow I don't feel it lends itself very well to the types of RGP's I like. That's why I'd suggest the DS. I think we'll see in the future that big, epic storylines won't be difficult to realize on the DS as well. As, for example, I've got a feeling they'll do with Dragon Quest IX.

The end of GS 2 has bugged me for years. When you beat the game, it makes you put in the finished file in your save slot, just the same as they did for the first one. But my beef was, why would you take up a whole file if there's no sequel? Wouldn't that data be used the same way as it was in GS2 where you can load your data into the new game? Granted I had a younger brain back when I first played it but still...every other RPG just brings you back to the last time you saved. Where's GS3!? ##### dammit.
It's a lost cause for me now anyway. I don't have a DS or a Wii and its highly doubtful I will get either. And if a Camelot game comes out, most likely it will be put on one of those two systems. So ultimately, no sequel of Golden Sun for me. Such a shame my Game Boy SP has to go into dark obscurity. It's a great handheld. The Wii is just too weird for me. I'd much prefer play Mario Kart with a regular controller, I dont want to use the wheel. I guess I'm just old and boring at heart.

I would rather see GS3 on the DS as well. I loved having an original RPG to take with me places. I was obsessed with both games so much I snuck my SP into school to play it in Study Hall~
The ending was really good but left so many things open, and DID ANYONE NOTICE THE WORLD MAP? If you look at the corners it looks kind of like a forest or something, so maybe there was a world under Wayard(if I am correct thats what it was called)
Long shot in the dark but you never knoooww. : O
<3 Hope it comes out.

It's actually been a while since I've played either of the games, so I can't really say if I noticed that or not. I'd have to pop the game in my DS to check. I suppose it's always possible there's something like that going on, but I'd have to check before I start making predictions, haha...And yes, the world is called Wayard. =).
