Nintendo in the same field as Microsoft and Sony. They're onto top. Microsoft competition is Sony and Nintendo. It's just odd that people keep talking about competition and leaving the company that's on top in the console and handheld department. It's because Nintendo doing something completely different that might be reason why they're ahead of the competition.
Again, why is it a gimmick? Are people even going to attempt to state why they think it's a gimmick or just split on the idea that doesn't fly with their interest. I could make fun of the idea myself, because it's not a feature I likely won't like, but doesn't make it a gimmick or bad idea, because I don't like it.
Sony and Microsoft have stated on NUMEROUS ocasions that they don't see Nintendo as a competition. Both of the representatives have stated that they only see each other as a competition. They are the bigger companies and have much more money, so they are the big players. They see Nintendo as the whole different entity doing something completely different. Plus, the 360/PS3 are realitively the same price with the Wii so much less. They see consumers either buying a PS3 or 360 AND a Wii. Hence, the competition between the PS3 & 360 for the major console. In reality, they saw the failure of the Gamecub and wrote them off forever.
And them doing something different is the reason that they are ahead. That and they targeted the billions of people who never play games besides the same, small gaming community that Microsoft/Sony is after.
The reason that it is a gimmick is because Microsoft is copying Nintendo. It's like when a knock-off game comes on the market right after a successful one. It's gimmicky. For example, GTA was huge, so you saw all these knock-off "sandbox" style games with too much swearing and stupid violence. Hence, it was gimmicky.
Also, Microsoft/360 aren't known to do something like this. It's like Nintendo releasing a bunch of M-rated FPS. That is not what they are known for, so it is kind of fake of them to do it.
