Okay well as many of you know, Square-Enix (as well as any company) is notorious for putting lots of meaning behind the names of Characters and places concerning symbolic meaning, definitional meaning, and mythological meaning, so here's my question:
What is the meaning behind the Game title "Dirge of Cerberus"?
My own analysis so far:
The name of Vincent's gun in Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus is actually called Cerberus. This name is not the name of ANY of his guns in FF7, so why the name change?
Well as many of you know Cerberus is the 3 headed dog that guards Hades (The Underworld), and Vincent's gun is a 3 barrelled gun (like the 3 dog heads). So maybe how Cerberus the Guardian protects the Underworld and Souls, Vincent's gun protects the Souls of the "Dead" as well (lucretia).
And a Dirge is a funeral song of mourning. So Dirge of Cerberus would be like, the ending song for the guardian. If Vincent thinks of himself as Cerberus, or the guardian of the lost souls, maybe it could be similar to like, the demise of guarding all the souls?
I dunno, I think this is about right, and if it is, it's EXTREMELY symbolic, but what do you all think?

Or maybe Cerberus, or Kerberos swallowed a dirge and now Vincent is looking for it, because he needs to cut his apple?
Just FYI, Dirge is a knife in World of Warcraft =P.

Honestly... it's because it's cool to stick English in the title... especially if no one know what the words mean.
I'll humour Square-Enix though... I'm pretty certain that Cerberus refers more to Vincent then it does to his gun... or more to the point, his gun (which he named cerberus) is an extension of himself (it is Vincent's "three heads"). Not sure why Vincent would be Cerberus, I can only assume it's about him protecting something yadda yada.
Anyway, more to the point is the word "Dirge"... a song sung at a funeral. This journey that Vincent undertakes is his metaphorical "Dirge"... an adventure he is undertaking to lay something to rest (much like a song someone sings to lay someone to rest). Who is he laying to rest? Probably Lucrecia... I'm not sure, I've only gotten onto the assault on Midgar part.

It also fit nicely within the alphabet scheme of the collection.
Advent Children
Before Crisis
Crisis Core
Dirge of Cerberus
This is probably coincidence though

There it is. In the end, the whole collection will be called FF7 ABCs.
Also note that the second word of each starts with a C (excluding Of).

And you know they could easily get through to 'z'... in fact they might even have to invent some new letters for the last few. And you know Square Enix would... and they can... they are Square Enix.
Can you wait until 'R' for the FFVII: Remake

xD Nice... and somewhat believable. God bless you Square Enix... They are obviously trying to provide milk for the whole world... and with the way they are milking the cash cow... they may just succeed.

Dirge Of Cerberus,
A dirge is a somber song expressing mourning or grief, such as would be appropriate for performance at a funeral.
It means that, the rattling of that Gun Cerberus, is like a funeral song for the foes thats all.
ANYWAY.
I lol at Denim's list xD
But well...

yeah, there are too many FF VII fans.
It's not a bad thing, but too many think it's the pinnacle point of all RPGs.

In some sense it was just because of graphics, but other than that FF7 wasn't anything GROUNDBREAKING. It's one of my favorite games but definitely not the best RPG ever. But you're right, it's just too bad too many people think it was the pinnacle because it was not.

Safe to say if it is that remark has made my day.
