IGN: First web GTA IV review, another perfect 10
21 Comments by Griffin McElroy Apr 26th 2008 3:30PM
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

Is it too early to say that we're beginning to see a pattern develop here? We know that a mere handful of reviews for Rockstar's latest opus have been published, but should the current trend continue, Grand Theft Auto IV could be the subject of more perfect scores than 1976 Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci. Yes, IGN recently dropped the suspiciously non-embargoed first online review for the title, giving it a 10 out of 10 (on both platforms) and evoking the wrath of the Nintendo Defense Force, calling GTA IV "the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time."

The seven-page, five-thousand word review (and accompanying video review, after the jump) praises the game's art style, the immersive backdrop of Liberty City, the "Oscar quality" story and the "refined" gameplay. The enamored reviewer even commends some of the quirky extra features included by Rockstar, such as Niko's multipuropse cellphone, or the in-game use of alcohol: "You don't have to drive drunk," the reviewer exclaims, "but it's fun to give it a try." Great, now we can look forward to public backlash towards the game's DUI-endorsing write-ups, as well.

Utterly stunning in every resepct. [May 2008, p.79]

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

IGN UK

Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it's managed to meet them. That it's also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game's Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived.

Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

Rockstar have surpassed themselves, delivering unquestionably the definitive GTA and perhaps the greatest videogame of all time. [June 2008]

Ill be picking it up regardless of the scores. I havent played GTA since the Dreamcast had GTA 2 on it, so I'm pumped for this.

I am really looking forward to this game though I love the GTA franchise and the idea of a new one with that open world on the PS3(or 360) is astounding - I'll be grabbing this on the PS3 despite the DLC for the 360 version since the PS3 has free onine multiplayer and the slight edge in visuals(according to IGN). I love sandbox games anyway but GTA is the standard for me, roll on Tuesday smile.gif
Grahf
Until a day or so ago, I just thought I'd pick it up when I had the money (funds going towards MGS4 primarily) but as I started reading into the game more, learning more about the revamped combat and physics and such, it has become a must have for me, so I'll likely be picking this up at the end of next week. I think I'm going to get it for 360 (had a huge debate with myself over which version to get and was leaning towards the PS3 version) and it really boiled down to the fact that all my friends in real life are getting the 360 version, and multiplayer is supposed to be worthwhile.

um, yeah... don't care.
never cared for/about GTA4... this doesn't change my mind in the slightest.

also, don't give a damn about MGS4 either.

I've never been a big fan of GTA, but the fact that the city is a slightly altered duplicate of NYC and parts of NJ makes me really want to try this game. The perfect reviews also seem to be sweeping me up a bit on the express hype train. Now it's not an issue of if I'm going to buy it, but when.
Athrun
So there are video reviews to check out as well? Have to check that out then.
I skipped San Andreas, but I really loved Vice City because of it's thick atmosphere and music. I'm really looking forward to playing this one in a few days.

PS3 was confirmed to get DLC as well, but we don't know what it is exactly yet.

Pfuh, GTA lost its appeal to me long ago. I'm 100% sure that I won't be getting this, no matter what scores it gets. Unless you -reader of this post- can somehow convince me to give the game a chance. But most likely you will just be wasting your time. =P

I might rent this title. Other than that, I'll pick it up when it get it's price reduce in a year or two. I'm not a huge fan of GTA series, but I've enjoyed playing the game on occasion. I just won't pay 60$ U.S. dollars for the title. Popular games end up getting price slashes after a certain period of time, I expect GTA will get one, too.

In short, I won't be playing the game in the near future.

Okay, so, you're posting in a GTA 4 thread about how you don't care about GTA 4.
Magical. Ridiculously Redundant. You try to hard, anyone ever tell you that?

Anyways.
Of course, I'm sure this article exaggerates to one hell of an extent. I've always enjoyed the GTA games though, for some stupid silly reason. You could call it a guilty pleasure if it wasn't for the fact that they are generally well-designed games all around. (It does the whole "open-city" thing better than any game thats ever tried it, imo. Its also extremely funny, the radio stations, dialogue, people, so forth et cetera.)

I'll probably pick this up at some point...maybe when it doesn't burn a $60 hole through my wallet.

The easiest and most effective way to see whether you like a game or not is renting it. Simple isn't?

IGN reviews actually matter? *Shrugs* Never knew that...

I am fine with GTA4 getting a perfect score, but IGN is a horrible website. Also, calling it the best game since Ocarina of Time is just a ploy to get more hits. Was it really necessary to say that? They obviously wanted to get under fanboy's skins so that they can get more hits.

Gametrailers gave it a 9.8, so I am not surprised it got a 10.
Grahf
Game Informer gave it a 10 (although they have given out quite a few 10s including Halo 2 and a few others) so it seems to be a trend. I don't know if its the best game since Ocarina of Time, but based on reviews alone, it very well may be.
Razael
I'll believe it when I play it.

IGN rarely gives out perfect scores and they said that to give readers some context. I don't see how praising the last game that they gave a perfect score mean that they have some ulterior motive. Who exactly are they offending?

I'm not a huge GTA fan or anything myself but from what's being said about this game, you're not going to have to be one to enjoy it.

I think it's going to be a game with far more depth than the previous titles.

10's in any mag/site are not a trend.

I'm gonna pass on GTA IV. Why? I'm interested in other titles, I'm sure it's going to be a great game, but I'm pretty sure after awhile there's going to be complaints about glitches or how it's just an overrated piece of trash. Plus like what Vins said, I don't wanna fall under a $60 defecit. I'd rather much buy Persona 3 FES which is about $23 at Gamestop.
LagunaWannabe
I just saw on a CNN.com headline that GTA4 is supposed to be the best seller in the first week of all time, beating a record held by a more recent game titan, Halo 3.

I find that incredible.

This board amazes me. One of the biggest releases of the eyar, if not the decade, and about half of the psoters are negative or straight out uninterest. Sometimes I think I should relocate to a different board with my play tastes these days XD

Anyway, I went out and bought the game this morning, and from what I've played so far its excellent. Believe the hype.
Denim
This game looks amazing. And not just based on the interviews but on the gameplay.
Hey, realistic car jacking. The most realistic cop arrest AI. OMFG. SUX BALLZ GTA BORING.

I was going to try to get it today, but I currently have no money, and when asking for an advance on allowance so that I can get the game, I was met from my parents by the dreaded "I don't think you should be able to have GTA". I then spent probably an hour explaining why GTA IV is revolutionary (which it is, and based on thing I've seen and heard, theres no denying it) and trying to get them to realize that it isn't just a "murder simulator". You see, my parents are those that, when not facing any problem with it, call gaming a serious form of entertainment, but treat it as a fad or a kids toy (my mom even went as far as to compare it to the hype that went into beanie babies) when a game becomes something huge.

Anyway, I'll almost definitely get this game whether my parents say I can or not, because this game is most definitely a landmark in gaming history.

EDIT: for the record, I am 17, so I'm the recommended age (or above) for buyers of this game and can legally buy this game on my own anyway, so saying I'm not old enough is, imo, kind of ridiculous.

i've never been one to listen to hype- usually games are all hyped up and turn out to be complete disappointments [FF7 anyone?]
i've always been one for quirky under-the-radar games.

I went with a buddy of mine to go buy this today. I haven't played it yet because I've had to write a paper, but I've watched a few minutes of him playing and this game is mad good. They really stepped up everything.

I saw a couple of clip of gameplay today, but they really stepped up. Stepped up enough to give me a reason NOT to get it still, the same thing.... Only updated.

Vilagen
Same here. Never been interested in Grand Theft Auto. Not because I do not think that they are good games. They probably are, and I am sure that part IV deserves the credit and attention that it has been getting. It is just that I learned with Grand Theft III that all I care about is running around, taking cars and shooting things more than the missions and story. In that sense, I guess that is why I have felt its two sequels (or spin offs?) were pretty much the same thing, just a different city. I admit that San Andreas was quite a feet to accomplish taking into consideration the size of the entire thing, but in the end the core of the game is still the same. Not that it is a bad thing because I am sure that the fans of the series still want the free roaming, violent game world that GTA is about.

Chances are though that my brother will get the game, so I will probably end up playing it and having some mindless fun.
The Evil Dead
I didn't play it myself but I took a friend to buy it today. I played Crisis Core and we played some Halo 3 in between his sessions. He's logging in some major time now and is going to let me know how it goes.

It's very sweet from what I've seen though... And it uses a cover system like Gears of War so that's a huge up from me. I'm sure I'll have more hands on in a week, and about 2-3 when I buy it if I like it.

It looks great. There's definitely a lot more depth to it from what I can tell. More interaction with the city and environments. I don't care for cutscenes, but there's a really hollywood camera style during them that keeps things a bit interesting IMO.

Too early for me to really form a solid opinion. I'll post again when I get a bit of solid play time.

Also while I own Liberty City and Vice City Stories I am no GTA fanboy. It'll take quite a bit for them to really win me over to buy it.
Athrun
I got to play the game yesterday, and I'm pretty impressed by it so far. The cars definitely don't handle like they used to any more. It's very hard to turn when you hit the breaks for example. The handling reminds me a bit of Driver.

We haven't gotten access to the whole city yet but it still feels pretty massive and detailed. Plenty of places you can interact with, and most game systems have been refined. Like stealing cars that are locked, and hotwireing them.
There are a lot of impressions to cover, but it's just best to test the game and find out for yourself because there's too much to tell. But one thing the reviewers said was that Nico's character is really likable and his story is one you care about, and after playing through the story a bit, I definitely can see what they mean. He is an awesome character. If you liked Balthier because of his sarcasm, you'd probably like Nico. I definitely want to see where his story is going, and I never was interested in the GTA plot before. Always thought of it as a side thing, even though it was well written.

I didn't notice anything like that. (Pressing a button to seek cover?) From what I could tell it was more like MGS where you can press yourself up against a wall if you stand or crouch next to it. I may have missed it though.
Markies
I'm a GTA Fan. I was more mad with the reviews and IGN as I really can't stand them.

I have played most of the games. I played the first two for a little while. The third one is fantastic as I have beaten it a few times, including 100%. The same goes for Vice City and San Andreas. I've played Liberty City Stories and I'll play Vice City Stories rather soon.

However, I won't be playing GTAIV. Why? Because I don't own a 360 or a PS3 and I am not going to buy the consoles just to play the game. It looks fun. The wanted system seems to make the game easier which is a shame. People say that it is almost too easy compared to other GTA games.

I was very inebriated so I couldn't tell you if you could cover totally behind like small objects or cars for sure but I believe you can. You can press yourself up against walls though MGS style as you said.

Don't take my word for much on the game yet. tongue.gif

haha what? I made a jokey off-hand comment. Hence the "XD". I'm going nowhere friend ^^. And I'm not going to debate my perception of negative to yours- we disagree. ^^

Anyway, I played anoher fair chunk of it today and had a hell of a blast with my friends. Just a bunch of us sitting rround taking turns at the missions, and it was a really good laugh, some of the stuff is awesome, like when the owner of the car keeps hold of the handle and gets dragged along with the car - pretty priceless.
Hoodman
Knew people in here would be debating the reviews, the game, and the hype on this site. I'm a GTA fan, I'm an RPG fan first, but GTA3 was quite the revolution. San Andreas had huge scope, as for Vice City I wasn't too thrilled on that one. GTA4 looks strong for its story and the rest is well the usual GTA stuff which is cool too. GTA4 is probably the first GTA with a story interesting enough to get most of us RPGers into it, as most of us are used to some of the best stories ever.
Though I think something drastically different will need to be done for the next GTA or a new game entirely, because the next game will probably have the GTA franchise jump the shark, I can see it happening really soon.
Crimson Cloud
I believe that this game is a bit overrated. Sure it's nice to hear Niko talking my language for once, although not accurately which annoyed me a bit. Never been that much of a GTA fan but after I played San Andreas and this game, I have to say that most of the stuff was taken out which shouldn't suppose to happen. You can dress up your character but where is the barber shop and why are your stats missing? No gym this time? Yeah, unfortunately.

But hey guess what, there is dating. Yeah, you'll get called every five minutes by your ''so-called'' friends who want to go bowling or playing darts. And maybe to check out some fake American boobs?

This game was fun for few hours, the graphics and the city amazes even now, but it gets really boring after all the jobs keep repeating it selves (which Niko fallows like a slave by the way), and you check all the ways of killing people with a car. And the jobs you are doing for certain people, what the hell for? It never explained why you need all those money? To spend on clothing and taking out your friends? Or to stock up your weapons and ammo maybe? And Niko sometimes appear out of character cuz he do things differently with each job he takes.

I really expected more from this game and I would never-ever give this game a huge 10.
