Full Version: Suikoden V Character Guide

Pesmerga
Well, this is my character guide. It is basically a synopsis about which characters are good and which aren't.
All the characters will be at lvl 99, which I gained with an Action Replay, because leveling that myself is just ridiculous.

Without further ado, here is the list:

Royal Paradise: SS

Unite:

+ Lyon/Miakis: Sworn Protector
+ Sialeeds: Royal Power
+ Roy: Perfect Likeness
+ Georg, Kyle, Galleon, Lyon, Miakis: Falena's Finest

Synopsis:

In previous games, the hero usually excelled in some parts. In Suikoden V the Prince actually doesn't.
He has the Dawn Rune, which in itself is pretty powerful, but low MAG, to fully utilize the Rune.
As a matter of fact, the Prince is better of increasing his ATK, as that itself has a nice number.
The Prince has a wide selection of epic skills to use, including Royal Paradise at SS.
The Prince is a good character for physical combat and thus some physical damage multipliers will suit him fine. Don't use him for his Dawn Rune, the combination is not that good. The Prince is supposed to be a hybrid character, but he is better suited as a physical fighter.

Alhazred

HP: 599
MP: 9/9/7/4
WP: Howls of Demons 230
RNG: S
Combo: 2

Rune slots:

Head:----------

Magic Defense: S
Incantation: SS

Epic:

Divine Right: A
Sacred Oath: S

Unite:

Wabon, Isato: Shining Scalp

Synopsis:

Alhazred is a mediocre magician.
His downsides are his low speed, s range weapon, low defence and evasion. Alhazred cannot take many hits either, as he has a low amount of HP. His MAG and MDF are decent, so he can deal some damage. Another plus about Alhazred is that he can equip 2 skills, unlike pretty much every other mage, that has some fixed skill stuck in one of their slots.

Ax

HP: 999
MP: 5/2/0/0
WP:
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Head:------
R Hand:
L Hand:

Dragon Special: A (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: S
Triple Harmony: S

Unite:

+ Nick: Violent Charge
+ Bergon, Moroon: Looks Can Kill
+ Flail, Lance: Stampede

Synopsis:

I tend to avoid animals, as I have no control over their growth. They can only equip items and that is it. Ax has the problem that Konami ruined the Dragon Cavalry. I say this, because it is true.
Although Ax has a good amount of defence, the fact that he cannot equip armour nullifies that. Also, Ax has low ATK and his other stats don't really exceed either. He can only equip 1 Rune and 1 skill slot, as 1 skill slot is taken by Dragon Special, only on rank A.

Belcoot

HP: 908
MP: 9/6/4/2
WP: Gvozdika 255
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand: Falcon Rune
L Hand:---------------

ATK: 772-------ACC: 595

Sword of Magic: C

Epic:

Raging Lion: S
Fate Control: S
Triple Harmony: S
Untold Clarity: S

Unite:

+ Dinn: Sword Master
+ Shoon, Zegai: Crowd Favourites

Synopsis:

Belcoot has great ATK and is one of the highest in the game. Belcoot also has good TEC/ACC and his 106 base PDF is good as well. Yes, 106 is pretty good for base PDF.
Belcoot comes equipped with the Falcon Rune, which has been nerfed quite badly. He can therefore only equip 1 Rune, which is a shame. He does has two skills slots open and thus gives some freedom. He has 4 good epic skills for him, thus his stats can get a nice boost. Belcoot is good for dealing high damage and receiving, because of his defence and hp.

Bergen

HP: 819
MP: 5/2/0/0
WP: Super Duper Shovel 255
RNG: S
Combo: 2

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand:------
L Hand:------

ATK: 658-------ACC: 379
MAG: 105-------EVA: 208
PDF: 110---------SPD: 402
MDF: 287-------LUK: 391
TEC: 379

Stamina: B
Attack: A
Defense: A
Technique: A
Vitality: B
Agility: C
Magic: C
Magic Defense: C
Incantation: D
Sword of Magic: D
Treasure Hunt: SS (fixed)

Unite:

+ Ax, Moroon: Looks Can Kill
+ Wabon, Gunde: Tunnelin' Thru

Synopsis:

Well, for such a short character, he has surprising stats. Bergen excels in his ATK, which is pretty high. Bergen is also very quick and thus great for dealing a lot of damage in little time.
He even has two Rune slots open. Unfortunately he has only 1 skill slot open and no epic skill available. Also, Bergen has a lot of HP and a good base defense, plus he can wear heavy armour, rendering him able to withstand some blows.

Bernadette

HP: 708
MP: 9/9/7/4
WP: Ast
RNG: L
Combo: 1

Rune slots:

Head:-------
R Hand:-----
L Hand:-----

ATK: 444-------ACC: 297
MAG: 699-------EVA: 390
PDF: 98---------SPD: 309
MDF: 514-------LUK: 101
TEC: 297

Skills:

Stamina: C
Attack: B
Defense: B
Technique: B
Vitality: C
Agility: B
Magic: A
Magic Defense: A
Incantation: A

Epic:

Divine Right: S
Sacred Oath: A

Unite:

+ Nelis, Yahr: Island Storm

Synopsis:

Bernadette, as well as her fellow Island Nation SoDs, are somewhat hybrid characters. Thus able to deal magical damage and physical damage. None won't top the pure mages, or physical fighters, but they are able to deal decent damage in both fields.
Bernadette is a nice example of this. As a matter of fact, she has the highest MAG for a non-mage.
She is a nice option, if you want a character with both MAG and ATK. Although her ATK is not that high, the fact that she has better MAG covers it.
She has three Rune slots open, as well as 2 skill slots. Her skills aren't her best asset, but it doesn't make her any less.
Bernadette is also able to wear medium/chain armour, but she'll be in your back row anyway, thus this doesn't matter.
She is a good one nonetheless.

Byakuren

HP: 999
MP: 5/2/0/0
WP:
RNG: S
Combo: 2

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand:
L Hand:

ATK: 813-------ACC: 398
MAG: 108-------EVA: 300
PDF: 454---------SPD: 308
MDF: 304-------LUK: 104
TEC: 398

Skills:

Stamina: SS
Attack: S
Defense: A
Technique: D
Vitality: A
Agility: D
Magic Defense: A
Freeze: SS (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: SS
Armor of Gods: SS

Unite:

+ Flail, Miroon: Secret Crush

Synopsis:

With high ATK and HP, this character doesn't look that bad. He also has a whopping 454 defence.
However, major drawback here. Byakuren is a large animal, that means she takes up 2 spots. Now, if Byakuren would have stats, equal for two characters, this wouldn't be a bad thing, but she doesn't. Byakuren also misses out on armour, because she is an animal and she cannot equip a single Rune. She can also only equip 1 skill, as 1 slot is taken by Freeze at rank SS. Feeeze really doesn't make any difference in battle.

Cathari

HP: 527
MP: 4/2/0/0
WP: Sneewitchen 255
RNG: L
Combo: 1

Rune slots:

Head: Godspeed Rune
R Hand:----------------
L Hand:----------------

ATK: 879-------ACC: 836
MAG: 95-------EVA: 296
PDF: 94---------SPD: 712
MDF: 209-------LUK: 492
TEC: 836

Stamina: A
Attack: S
Defense: C
Technique: S
Vitality: A
Agility: SS
Magic: C
Magic Defense: C
Incantation: C

Epic:

Fate Control: S
Swift Foot: SS
Triple Harmony: S

Unite:

+ Isabel, Zerase: Conceit

Synopsis:

I don't think words are needed here. Cathari is one of the strongest characters in the game and has the highest stats in several fields. Her SPD, ATK and TEC/ACC are the best and that is quite the achievement. Cathari also has the Godspeed Rune, which is good for when you play the game a first time. Secondly, Cathari has 2 Rune slots open, as well as 2 skill slots, with good epic skills available.
Cathari would benefit most from damage multipliers, give her some Runes that make her uncontrollable, but significantly increase her strength and she'll kill things in no time. Well, she did anyway, but this is just to put emphasize on the whole "killing in no time" thing. Cathari is like having Yiazmat in your party. Yes, way too overpowered.

Cius

HP: 808
MP: 9/6/4/2
WP: General's Sword 230
RNG: S
Combo: 4

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand:-------
L Hand:-------

ATK: 551-------ACC: 292
MAG: 301-------EVA: 403
PDF: 88---------SPD: 293
MDF: 300-------LUK: 208
TEC: 292

Skills:

Stamina: A

Vitality: A
Agility: A
Magic: C
Magic Defense: B
Incantation: C
Sword of Magic: C

Epic:

Raging Lion: A
Fate Control: A
Triple Harmony: A

Unite:

+ Lelei: Lockdown

Synopsis:

Cius' only good thing is his EVA, which is amongst the better ones, but that is it. Despite him being able to wear heavy armour, his base defence is awfully low, if not the lowest in the game. His skills aren't that good either and thus Cius is easily replaced, too easily in fact.

Cornelio

HP: 614
MP: 9/9/7/4
WP: Fortississimo 230
RNG: S
Combo: 4

Rune slots:

Head: DoReMi Rune
R Hand:-------------
L Hand:-------------

ATK: 447-------ACC: 303
MAG: 595-------EVA: 479
PDF: 99---------SPD: 299
MDF: 588-------LUK: 202
TEC: 303

Skills:

Stamina: C
Attack: C
Defense: C
Technique: C
Vitality: C
Agility: C
Magic: A
Magic Defense: B
Incantation: A
Sword of Magic: A
Perfect Pitch: SS (fixed)
Divine Right: S

Unite:

-

Synopsis:

It is funny, that throughout the game, he calls you mediocrity, while he in fact himself is one.
Cornelio has good EVA, which he needs, because his weapon is S range. He has low HP and can only wear light/medium armour.
He comes with the DoReMi Rune, but that is only useful when you have the DoReMi Elves in your team. He can also only equip one skill, as one is taken by Perfect Pitch at SS. That skill is again, only useful when the DoReMi Elves are in your team. Unless you plan on using them, even Alhazred is a better choice.

Dinn

HP: 844
MP: 9/6/4/2
WP: Shams al-Zuha 255
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand:------
L Hand:------

ATK: 779-------ACC: 497
MAG: 308-------EVA: 399
PDF: 101---------SPD: 210
MDF: 405-------LUK: 98

Skills:

Stamina: A
Attack: A
Defense: S
Technique: A
Vitality: A
Agility: A
Magic: C
Magic Defense: B
Incantation: C
Sword of Magic: C

Epic:

Raging Lion: A
Fate Control: A
Triple Harmony: A
Untold Clarity: A

Unite:

+ Belcoot: Sword Master
+ Rahal, Mathias: Fancy Lad

Synopsis:

Dinn is pretty much the same as Belcoot. Both have nice defence, wear heavy armour, high HP and most importantly, high ATK. They even have an unite together.
I do prefer Dinn over Belcoot, as Dinn has 2 Rune slots available, unlike Belcoot's 1. Dinn could have used some offensive S/SS skills, but this is not the case. Dinn is a good choice for some Runes that increase his ATK, or damage, even when it means he'll be uncontrollable.

Eresh

HP: 543
MP: 9/9/7/4
WP: Ner-gal 200
RNG: M
Combo: 1

Rune slots:

Head: Pale Gate Rune
R Hand: Resurrection Rune
L Hand:----------------------

ATK: 350-------ACC: 196
MAG: 788-------EVA: 303
PDF: 93---------SPD: 300
MDF: 698-------LUK: 308
TEC: 196

Skills:

Stamina: D
Attack: D
Defense: D
Technique: D
Vitality: D
Agility: D
Magic: SS
Magic Defense: SS
Incantation: S
Sword of Magic: S
Tutor: SS (fixed)

Epic:

Divine Right: SS
Sacred Oath: SS

Unite:

-

Synopsis:

Eresh is the mage with the highest MAG in the game. Eresh is a very powerful mage and we could have guessed, as she is acquainted by Jeane and she is very mysterious, even more than Jeane herself.
She has only 1 Rune slot open, as the Pale Gate Rune and Resurrection Rune are fixed, but who can complain? One downside about her is that she can only equip 1 skill, as one is taken by tutor, which is rather useless.

Ernst

HP: 700
MP: 9/9/7/3
WP:
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Head: Beast Rune
R Hand:
L Hand:

ATK: 534-------ACC: 303
MAG: 498-------EVA: 388

TEC: 303

Skills:

Defense: A
Technique: C
Vitality: A
Agility: S
Magic: A
Magic Defense: A
Incantation: A

Epic:

Armor of Gods: A
Divine Right: A

+ Norma: Beast Tamer

Synopsis:

Ernst is a very unfortunate character. His stats are very mediocre, which isn't a bad thing, but he is counted as an animal, as you can see by his high PDF. This means that he is not able to equip any armour, apart from accessories.
Another downside to Ernst is his Beast Rune. Some people think it is the Beast Rune from Suikoden II, but this is wrong.
This Beast Rune is pretty crap, as you have to spend one turn, transforming Ernst to his human form, before you can use the Rune and the Rune isn't that powerful. Aside from that, he cannot equip any other Runes and he doesn't have any outstanding skills either.

Faylen

HP: 721
MP: 9/9/5/2
WP: Hurricane Boomerang 250
RNG: L
Combo: 1

Rune slots:

Head:
R Hand:---------
L Hand:----------

ATK: 669-------ACC: 601
MAG: 396-------EVA: 291

Skills:

Stamina: B
Attack: A
Defense: B
Technique: A
Vitality: B
Agility: A
Magic: B
Magic Defense: A
Incantation: B
Treasure Hunter: S (fixed)

Epic:

Fate Control: SS

+ Faylon: Brotherly Love
+ Norma, Viki: Pretty Girl
+ Shoon, Lu: Teen Rebellion

Synopsis:

Faylen's stats aren't bad. She has high ATK and her TEC/ACC isn't bad either. Her weakness here is the fact that she can equip only two Runes and 1 skill. Treasure Hunter won't aid you in battle, as it only effects post battle.
That aside, she is a long range character, thus hits only once and with the low MAG, she isn't suited for any casting.
If you give her some damage increasing Runes, even if it makes her uncontrollable, she could be useful, but she is easily replaced.

Faylon

HP: 772
MP: 9/7/4/2
WP: Clobberific 250
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Head:

ATK: 772-------ACC: 298
MAG: 315-------EVA: 207

Skills:

Stamina: S

Technique: A
Vitality: A
Agility: C
Magic: D
Magic Defense: A
Incantation: D
Treasure Hunt: A (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: S

Unite:

+ Faylen: Brotherly Love

Synopsis:

Just like Faylen, Faylon has high attack power. Unlike Faylen, Faylon is a S range character. Funnily enough, his base PDF is lower than Faylen's and he cannot equip heavy armour. Faylon's only strength lies in his ATK, but that is it. All his other are average, or lower.

Flail

HP: 999
MP: 5/2/0/0/
WP:
RNG: S
Combo: 5

Rune slots:

Head:--------
R Hand:

ATK: 491-------ACC: 308

Vitality: A
Agility: B
Dragon Special: SS (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: S

Unite:

+ Rahal: Azure Charge
+ Ax, Lance: Stampede
+ Miroon, Byakuren: Secret Crush

Synopsis:

Earlier I said how Konami screwed up the Dragon Cavalry. Well, here is another good example. In general, animals tend to have high base stats, to cover up the fact they cannot equip any armour.
Now, Flail's base PDF is good, but he has nothing else. He can only equip 1 skill, 1 Rune and to insult the Dragon Cavalry even more, his base ATK is a mere 491. Flail's name looks very similar to "fail", maybe that is what Konami was thinking. Flail is the dragon of Rahal, the supposed best fighter in the Dragon Cavalry...

Galleon

HP: 865
MP: 7/4/2/1
WP: Thundering Halberd 250

Mow Down: SS (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: A
Armor of Gods: SS
Triple Harmony: A
All-out Strike: A

Unite:

+ Georg, Kyle, Miakis: Maze of Steel
+ Frey, Georg, Kyle, Lyon, Miakis: Falena's Finest

Synopsis:

Galleon is "only" good for 1 thing: tanking. Galleon has tremendous ATK, a very high 111 PDF and can equip heavy armour. To emphasize on the whole tanking thing, Galleon has the Knight Rune, to protect other party members.
Mow Down, his fixed skill gives him a chance of hitting clusters of enemies as well.
However, Galleon has one "weakness". This game doesn't need tanks and thus he isn't "needed". He'll be good for nuking enemies with his immense ATK, but there are better options.

Gavaya

HP: 997
MP: 7/5/2/1
WP: Kama 250
RNG: S
Combo: 3

Rune slots:

Magic Defense: A
Incantation: D
Sword of Magic: D
Freeze: S (fixed)

Epic:

Raging Lion: A
Triple Harmony: A

Unite:

+ Nikea: Sacred Greenhorn

Synopsis:

Gavaya has 2 big pluses. He has high ATK and a lot of HP. Aside from that, he can equip heavy armour and has three Rune slots open. Gavaya is an excellent choice for the famous Rune combos, such as using the Fury Rune, or Crazed Rune, or basically any Rune you see fit, as long as it increases his damage. Gavaya's other stats aren't too great and he should mainly be used for his ATK. He is great for racking up damage and that is all there is to Gavaya.

Synopsis:

Genoh has the same problem Byakuren has. Genoh takes up two spots in your party and doesn't have the stats to back those two spots up. With high ATK, Genoh is able to lash out, but as we have seen earlier, there are characters that take up 1 spot and have Rune slots open to increase their damage. Genoh is fixed with the Parent Turtle Rune, which in itself is pretty bad and Genoh's skills really don't help him. They increase his already high PDF and HP, which he doesn't need. Because Genoh is an animal, he also misses out on armour and Genoh is awfully slow. Technically, Genoh is a tank, but if you want a tank, Galleon is your choice.

Epic:

Raging Lion: A

Unite:

Synopsis:

Goesch packs quit a punch. I am certain that many people don't bother to use him, which is a shame, because he is not too shabby.
He has high HP, wears heavy armour and has nice EVA. Aside from that, his ATK is pretty high as well, as a matter of fact, it is one of the highest in the game. He does has one skill slot being used with Mow Down at SS, which is nice for attacking clusters of enemies, but I find that skill only good in select situations. He doesn't excel in skills though, which is a bummer. He has two Runes open, so you have some freedom. As with other physical fighters, simply increase his physical damage with Runes and he'll do a good job at mowing down enemies. He could have used some SPD though, but nobody is perfect.

Gunde

HP: 999

Synopsis:

Gunde ain't that bad, actually. He has a lot of HP, high ATK and high PDF. His LUK and ACC/TEC aren't too bad either.
Take into account that he wears heavy armour and you have yourself a nifty character. He also comes with two Rune slots, so he can be given some nice damage increasing Runes. He does miss out on epic skills, which is a shame.
In all honesty, he doesn't need them, but other characters do have them and thus replace Gunde. To put it down, he just falls short, no pun intended.

Synopsis:

Hazuki is a personal favourite character and I like having her in my party. The reasons are, she is pretty quick, has nice ATK and high ACC/TEC and is prone to multi-striking. With her ATK, multi-striking is pretty good. Another good point is her LUK, which scores high as well. The downside is her fixed Sickle Rune, which is alright, but prevents her from being a much better character. She has low HP, but she is able to wear heavy armour. Oh, she is also pretty quick, one of the quickest in the game. Another good point of Hazuki is her skills, she can equip two and she has the ones she need on S rank.

Synopsis:

Isabel is another personal favourite of mine. In terms of stats, she is similar to Belcoot and Dinn and there is little difference between them. Isabel has high ATK and ACC/TEC and can hit up to 3 times. She has two Rune slots open for you to make her stronger, as well as two skill slots. The reason why she could have your preference will possibly depend on your party. If you have Zerase and Cathari in your party, both whom are incredibly powerful as well, then Isabel is the better choice, as they have an unite together, Conceit. Anyway, with high HP, ATK, TEC/ACC and the option to wear heavy armour, as well as having a high base PDF, Isabel is a pretty good character that competes with the best.

Synopsis:

Isato is another nifty character. He comes with good ATK, TEC/ACC and SPD. He has three Rune slots open and 1 skill slot, as one is taken by Barrage at SS. Isato is a both physical and magical, but he looks better suited for physical attacks. His MAG is a bit low to make him good at magic and he'd be great for nuking enemies from the back row. The reason is that he has three Rune slots open and thus could be given an impressive damage boost with all the Runes you can equip.

Unite:

Synopsis:

Jeane doesn't need any introductions, as she is somewhat of an icon. As usual, she excels in magical powers and that is all you need her for. The only real surprise on Jeane here is, she has very high PDF. As a matter of fact, her PDF is the second highest for humans, with only Nikea having a better PDF, the reason is probably because she can only wear robes, thus this is somewhat useless. Secondly, she is a M range and can therefore be in the back row.
She has 2 "weaknesses", which are her Charm Rune and her fixed skill: Rune Sage.
Charm Rune can be handy, but wouldn't it be better if she'd had a different Rune there? Rune Sage is a skill that is unnecessary. If you want a Rune equipped, just walk up to her in your castle, or in random village. Pretty much most villages have a Rune shop anyway. Anyway, Jeane remains a good character nonetheless.

Synposis:

Josephine is an average mage. This is not a bad thing, as she can do a decent job at dealing damage, or healing, whatever you want to use her for.
She has one flaw though, which reverts back to Suikoden I and II. We had some powerful mages in those games, namely Luc, Crowley and Mazus. They all shared the same flaw, they were S range and had low HP, as well as low PDF, even with all their robes equipped, thus easily died. That and the games were more difficult.
Josephine, as well as Alhazred share these flaws as well, which is a shame. Aside from that, the stronger mages in this game are M, or L range. Josephine has 2 Rune slots open, thus giving her some freedom, as well as 2 skill slots.
She isn't that bad, but the whole S range thing might (possibly) affect your decision.

Synopsis:

Killey is a famous character. I think he was one of the first characters in Suikoden II to use the Fury+Double Strike+Double-Edge Rune combination.
This time, Killey has been "nerfed". Killey is now a L range character and cannot multi-strike. Killey is similar to Cathari in the whole set up. Both have the same high stats, however, Killey has something that Cathari hasn't.
Killey has 3 Rune slots open, which is a big plus over Cathari. He only has 1 skill rank though and no S rank skills, unfortunately. Anyway, with an insane amount of ATK and high TEC/ACC, as well as SPD and LUK, Killey is quite the character. Maybe he isn't as unique as he was in Suikoden II, but he is still ranked with the top in this game.

Synopsis:

Kisara is similar to Bernadette. Both are somewhat hybrid, but both are better at casting spells, as they're magical powers are higher. Kisara has nice MAG and is therefore capable of doing a nice job at casting spells, whether it be healing, or dealing damage. Her MP is impressive as well, as normally only mages reach that. Her downside lies in the fact that she is S range and can only wear light/medium armour. Accompanied by average HP and low PDF, she'll get hit hard (even with those air bags covering half her body).
Kisara has three Rune slots open and two skill slots and thus you have some freedom with her.

I can easily remember in the early days that people were saying Kyle wasn't good enough. I always said he was the Flik of Suikoden V, despite him wearing Viktor's outfit at some point in the game.
Kyle is a hybrid character, which is obvious in his ATK and MAG. Kyle is a great character, if you're looking for a hybrid. With three Rune slots and two skill slots, Kyle has quite some freedom and it is up to you how you want to use him. He has good MP and thus the ability to back up the mages, if needed. His ATK is quite nice as well and can therefore attack monsters and save his MP for when he needs it. Kyle is a good character.

I'll repeat the same as I did with the other dragons. Konami screwed up the Dragon Cavalry. Lance also proves this point.
His PDF is awesome, but the fact that he can't wear armour nullifies that. His ATK is average at best and that is the same for his other stats. He can only equip one Rune and one skill, so you're very limited, as you are with the other dragons. I dunno, the Dragon Cavalry doesn't really live up to their name, at least not in battle.

He also has 2 Rune slots open, as well as 2 skill slots, so you can let your Crazed/Fury/whatever Runes do the talking.
Don't worry if he becomes uncontrollable, the monsters will be dead soon enough anyway. Maybe a higher SPD would make him a better character, as well as being able to wear heavy armour, but in all honesty, he is fine as he is.

She has two Rune slots open, one is taken by the Mischief Rune and she has 2 skill slots open. Although only Swift Foot is perfect for her, Technique on A is a nice second choice. Lu is a good character that has no problem racking up damage from the back. I think if you can give her some damage increasing Runes, she'll come close to the damage the strongest characters reach.

He does have an amazing three rune slots for you to use and all right stats, especially his evasion is nice. However, considering he is an M rank, he can thus be placed on the backrow, rendering that evasion useless. His speed and magical defense are good as well, but it it won't make him legendary. Pick Muroon if you want to make the game more difficult.

Nelis is another mediocre character. Her stats aren't bad, but as with many other characters, there are better ones.
Bernadette is a better character in this case, as she has higher magic.
Nelis has three rune slots for you to use and 2 skill slots to use, including 2 epic skills available. She also has an unite with one of the more powerful characters in the game, Jeane, but it includes using Sharmista. If you want both Bernadette and Nelis, than Yahr might be another character you want in your team to use their unite: Island Storm. Nelis is a good character for those who want good characters, but none like Richard, Nakula/etc.

For a spear user, her attack power is pretty low and in return has more magical power.
She is sort of a hybrid spear user, but it really doesn't stand out. Kyle is by far superior, if you want a good hybrid character.
She has two rune slots open for you. Although the Unicorn Rune is set in 1 slot, it can be removed. She also has some epic skills available, but only 1 skill slot for you to use, as pierce is fixed on one, as with many spear users is the case.

She is a great character for the front row and good for dealing out high amounts of damage. She is fixed with the Boar Rune, but it is quite powerful. Unfortunately, not as powerful as it used to be, but still a good assett.
Nikea also has two skill slots open with two epic skills that will make her even more powerful. Stick a damage multiplier in her last Rune slot and you have yourself a strong fighter that can take a few punches, if she doesn't evade them instead. Nikea deserves a chance.

She has three rune slots open, giving you plenty of room to you, but she'd be better for magical purposes, as her skills support that idea better.
She has various epic skills available, but unfortunately only 1 skill slot, as one is taken by Potch Finder, at rank SS, which is handy if you're in need for money, as this will give you some extra cash per fight. Despite being more magic orientated, she can fend for herself on the front row, with a good chance of multi striking and nice evasion and even defence.

Rahal is a personal favourite of mine. Unfortunately, he isn't that great of a character. His stats are lower than Norma's, which is quite bad. I mean, considering he is the best fighter in the Dragon Cavalry (storywise) and his stats are lower than a "circus" girl, it sort of is an epic fail.
Anyway, Rahal has got various epic skills open, plus two slots for you to use, as well as three Rune slots.
Rahal can be made quite strong, but all his base stats are quite disappointing. Also, although he apparently can hit 4 times, you'll rarely, if not at all, see him do that.

Richard is a beast. This is the most dangerous character in the game. Richard has high attack power, spd, tec, acc and eva.
Richard can hit up to 4 times and there is a very small chance he won't multi-strike.
That is not all, look at his skills! Richard's skills are ridiculous! All the skills he needs he has on S, or SS and he has two skill slots open. Richard is the perfect character, for I believe the tiger formation. The formation that puts you in two < < vertically. Anyway, the reason why he is perfect, the computer will 9/10 attack Richard and Richard has pretty much immunity against physical attacks. Richard will parry and evade almost everything and when he does, there is a good chance that he'll counter as well. Richard is far too powerful for this game, I cannot think of anyone that comes close to Richard's abilities. His "weakness" is that he cannot be made more powerful with Runes, as he only has 1 Rune slot open. However, he doesn't need it. Think of Richard as having Ruby Weapon in your team. I mean, with Untold Clarity at SS, this already proves a point. Untold Clarity is the second best epic skill, as it improves all combat skills, except stamina.

Anyway, Roog is similar to Rahal, in that he has 3 Rune slots, 2 skills slots and some epic skills, but in all honesty, Roog isn't that good. The only remarkable thing he has is his evasion.

We know about Hoi copying Riou in Suikoden II, but this is just new. Not only do his stats copy the hero, also his skills do.
To put down Roy in words the best way is as follows: Roy is a watered down version of the prince. If you could replace the prince with a character to make the game slightly more difficult, Roy is THE option.
Roy has the option to use Royal Paradise, the best epic skill, as it effects everything, but only on A rank.
Should Roy be in your team? Well, he is on the same level with Rahal, but Rahal can be customized more, due to having 2 skill slots and 3 Rune slots, but Roy has Royal Paradise and is M ranged.

Viki has Chain Magic on rank SS stuck and it is awesome. There is a chance that she'll cast the same spell twice in a row, which is a great thing, especially with her stats.
Viki suffers the fact that she has the Blinking Rune stuck on her, which in all honesty isn't that great, but Jeane suffers the same thing with her Charming Rune and I find the Blinking Rune to be more effective.
Viki has great stats, great skills and to me is the best mage in the game, simply because of Chain Magic.

Wabon could have been a great surprising character, but isn't just it.
He lacks a good base defense, despite that he can use heavy armour and he lacks good skills. He misses out on epic skills even. Speaking of skills, one slot is fixed with Forge, which is pretty much useless.
Although he can deal some damage, the fact that he is slow and lacks evasion counters it. Wabon won't add anything special to your party. There are other characters like Wabon that could do the same and more. If you do plan on using Wabon, give him some rune like that makes him Berserk, or along the lines, just so that he'll become a mindless killing machine. He'd do a good job at that, but as I said, others can do the same thing and better.

Yahr has 2 Rune slots open, as 1 is taken by the Angry Dragon Rune. As with the Falcon, Boar and other Runes alike, this one is nerfed and rendered "bad" in my book. In previous games, these Runes were quite powerful, but in Suikoden V they're not, or at least, not as.
Yahr has access to some epic skills as well and he has two slots open, thus you've been given quite some freedom with him.

Synopsis:

Zegai is a monster. He has incredible attack power. Basically, that is all he needs, but he has more. He has high base defence and can equip all the heavy armour he wants. Secondly, his HP hits the roof as well.
His "weakness" here is that one of his skill slots is taken by Combat Teacher, which is rather useless and one Rune slot is being used by the Wrath Rune, but that Rune can be very helpful. Zegai in Fury rune is like Emerald Weapon on your team. Yes, this is the second time I used a Final Fantasy VII reference.
If only you could remove the Combat Teacher skill, what a change that would make to Zegai. His skills are astounding and a SS in Untold Clarity is the same as beating Penance with half the Sphere Grid. Yes, Untold Clarity is an epic Epic Skill.

This is pretty much the most damaging mage in the game. Not necessarily because of her stats, but simply because of her Star Rune. The Star Rune deals tons of damage and is the most powerful Rune in the game. Well, storywise it is the Sun Rune, but we never get to use it.
Aside from her Star Rune, Zerase is quite dangerous as well, she has high magical strength and can attack from the backrow with a surprisingly high attack power, for a mage.
The downside here again is the one skill slot, as one is taken by Tutor, which sucks. Zerase is an incredible force in your team. Pretty much makes your team invincible. She alone could take out bosses.

He is with you on quite some trips, as he is involved in the story quite a bit, but he could have been better. He only has 1 skill slot open, as one is been taken by Treasure Hunt on A, which is bad, as others have it on S, or even SS.

Finally an update! =D

Somewhat pointless for those who actually own the official strategy guide (which gives stats based on level 50, as well as pretty much all of the other areas you covered), though much more dependable, since the official guide is on crack in some areas. My only other "complaint" is how you seem to really downplay one or two characters simply because they're not the absolutely best choice(s). (Bernadette's the main one who caught my attention in this respect.) Personally, I think you should refer to this more as a "damage guide" (or something like that) than a character guide, since you seem to be focusing more on just overall damage output than character flexibility and such. (Could be wrong here, of course. Just the impression I've gotten so far.)

That stuff aside, certainly useful for those who don't feel like doing the experimenting themselves. And, as I said before, this is certainly more reliable than the official (BradyGames) guide in some ways, such as the skill lists.

I've noticed that you stick to that Fury + Double-Edged combo a lot, though damage-wise, there are some better choices I think you should look into. The Boost Rune, for example, gives a x2.0 damage boost (rather than Fury's x1.5, and without the decreased accuracy of Fury), albeit only lasting three turns and then reducing that character's HP to 1. The Crazed Rune is a great choice for characters who don't have signature runes or magic, since that also gives a x2.0 damage multiplier, at the cost of just not being able to control that character. (If this goes to somebody like Cathari, then who cares? Most of anything she hits will die anyway, lol. And with her speed, she almost always attacks first.)

You should also explore the unite attacks a bit more. Just the more damaging ones, of course. I can say already that Conceit (Cathari + Isabel + Zerase) can be pretty devastating. Since you're testing characters' overall damage output ability, it might be interesting to see whose unite attacks are most useful, as well.
(I'm sure doing this is plenty work already, so I'm so not barking orders or anything, haha. Just a suggestion, if you feel up to it.)

Just as a side-note, while it's only a bit of a one-hit wonder, Belcoot's Falcon Rune can be pretty devastating if you hook him up with a Violence Rune (another sometimes-handy rune I didn't mention before). Being a short-range fighter, he's liable to get hit a few times per turn, so the activation rate of the Violence status (x3.0 damage) is rather high, so with that multiplier added onto the x3.0 damage multiplier of his Falcon Rune (as well as a pretty reasonable strength stat to begin with, and whatever you might add with equipment)... He can pretty easily whip out a nice handful of damage in that kind of attack. Not to mention he still has a chance to hit multiple times with it. =o

I've got tons of other, minor notes to add, but I'll save those for Live Chat sometime, or something. Lol.
Pesmerga
I know you like Bernadette and I was expecting that you would say something about her.
Anyway, I did say she's a good character, magic wise, but I can't deny that there are several characters that are better than her, magic wise.
That is all I said, really. Wasn't saying she's not a good choice, but there are better ones.
Besides, I don't downtalk Bergen and he's not a first choice.
And yes, Byaruken is an unwise choice. Don't even try to say otherwise xD.

I know there are some better runes available, but I like to be in control of my characters. Cathari is a perfect candidate for the Crazed Rune and I have tons of Crazed Runes, but I like to decide which enemy she attacks =P.

A Rune you didn't mention was the Multi-Strike Rune, which increases your chance on succesful hits, which could provide good use as well.
Also, never leave out the Killer Rune.

I keep my opinion in the Falcon Rune. I think it is useless, especially because you can use it once per battle and the annoying after effect. It might be handy for dashing out damage, but if I put Richard next to him, I am clearly going for Richard and his Swallow Rune.

On that note, for now I only talk about the characters, it already takes enough time to do that.
It is annoying, as my save file is near the end of the game and I have to walk back into Sol-Falena every time to change my party.
I will do other things in the end, such as the unites and rune set ups.

I know you have the guide, so nothing surprising will come up, apart from maybe stats, but others don't have the guide, or read anything about it on the internet, besides, lvl 99 is just a new point of view.
I am pretty sure that characters don't grow twice as fast after lvl 70, so there won't be any difference in between the 99s and the 50s from your guide.
Chalryn
Yeah, again, was just a sort of impression I got. My apologies for the misunderstanding.
I generally don't use large characters anyway. Animal characters in general just really lack flexibility a lot of the time, and often don't have the kinds of stats that would make up for that lack of flexibility. (Of course, there are a few exceptions throughout the series, but none really stand out as amazing characters in the end.)

I was only talking about damage multipliers, which was why I left out Multi-Strike and Killer, but yes, both are indeed other good choices. (Personally, I'm not sure I've noticed much of a difference whenever I've tried out the Multi-Strike Rune, though. >_O)

Yeah, most of the command runes in Suikoden V were majorly nerfed, though for good reason. I mean, hell, how much easier would the game have been if those runes didn't have such limits to them? xD If Belcoot's Falcon Rune were the same as previous games' versions, that'd make him pretty overpowered. (Same goes for other command runes.) I wouldn't be too surprised if they also got limits for the sake of making players use the 'Attack' command more, rather than just relying on their 3x damage command rune every turn (or every other). While I was a bit disappointed by the limits in Suikoden V, they made plenty of sense.
I like Richard's Swallow Rune, simply for the chance of instant-death without ditching the damage of an attack. Other than that, though, it's really no different. It's still a once-per-battle command rune. His ridiculous stats are what make the rune so different (multiple hits more often, specifically).

Yeah, as I said, just an idea if you ever feel up to it.

I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make in that last paragraph. huh.gif I already said that your guide would be helpful for those without the guide, which I'm sure is a good amount of people. Also not sure about that last bit... What exactly are you saying? Lol. That may be true that there isn't much difference in stat differences between level 50 and 99, but... what does that prove?
Pesmerga
The last paragraph was me trying to say that nothing surprising will come out for anyone that has the guide, as characters of lvl 90 won't be different as when they were 50. Just higher stats.

Well, about the nerfed runes, I wouldn't mind so much if they even nerfed the animations. I mean, what the hell happened to the Boar Rune and the Falcon Rune? They were so magnificent in the previous Suikoden games... and now they suck.
Chalryn
I always figured Galleon would make a nice tank... if you ever needed one in the game, that is. sleep.gif Considering he's a physical character, he has some really nice MDF, and of course, plenty of HP. Being able to equip all heavy armor, and having a SS-rank Armor of Gods (or just Defense, if you prefer) just adds onto his use as a tank. That fixed Knight Rune, of course, allows him to tank for weaker characters, too. With that fixed Mow Down skill at SS-rank as well, his reasonable attack power can often be applied to clusters, and that attack power can be increased further by whatever rune you may choose to equip to his spare hand. Overall, he's just a nice tank character, as he can take plenty of damage (reduced), a well as deal a pretty nice amount. His main downfall here would be his speed and failure to multi-strike much, though such is expected of a "tank."

Gavaya is indeed an interesting character for customization. I still haven't bothered to use him, myself, but I know he can definitely be turned into quite a monster. A similarly nice character, I think, is Nakula (whom I'm sure you'll cover later on), though he's got a couple differences from Gavaya.

Again, I still haven't used Goesch, as he ultimately doesn't appeal to me, but the guide also points out that he's probably the hardest-hitting medium-range character (especially when you take his two free rune slots into consideration), despite his other weaknesses.

Minor typo: Gunda --> Gunde. (Only the first time you typed his name.)
Pesmerga
Galleon is a tank, he is the Humphrey of Suikoden V.
Though, to be honest, are you ever in need of a tank? He would be extremely handy if there were enemies that dealt massive damage, but alas.

Thanks for the note on the typo =D.
Chalryn
ohmy.gif You've been slacking in here. Lol. (Although I've been forgetting to check for a while, as well.)

On a somewhat-random note, though related to getting some nice damage out of characters, I think I've found the potentially most-damaging single-target unite attack in Suikoden V. =] Figure you may like to look into it, especially with character reviews like these. Anyway...

Take a look at the Fancy Lad attack for this game.
Characters: Dinn, Mathias, Rahal
Effect: 1.3x damage to one enemy

First of all, I hope we all understand that damage multipliers aren't everything. ^^ While 1.3x is indeed a good multiplier for a 3-person attack, I think there may be higher multipliers for a couple others... Anyway, just looking at Dinn and Mathias, they've got some of the higher/highest Strength stats in the game. On top of that, both can equip all heavy armor. (Although this is just a plus, and doesn't really affect strength.) Dinn has two rune slots open for customization, and both skill slots as well. Mathias only has one skill slot available for changing, though he's got all three rune slots open for customization. (Also, let's not forget that Mathias is even a medium-range character, so he doesn't necessarily have to be up front with the other two.) Rahal isn't exactly a great attacker, but he does have both skill slots open, as well as all three rune slots, so with the proper customization, he can be a nice addition to this combo, still.

Taking all of those factors into account, I'm pretty certain this would be the best single-target unite attack in Suikoden V. (Cathari, Isabel, and Zerase's "Conceit" might be second to this, or only a few steps behind.)
Pesmerga
there, I finally made an update.

I have to fix some stats though, as I found out I made a slight error, read writing stats down with skills still equipped.
Chalryn
Sweet. =D

Yeah, Moroon actually was pretty decent when I decided to seriously try him out. Really, what his main weakness is, though, is in defense. Considering he's a short-range character, it's pretty awful. Since he's a beaver, he can only equip lighter stuff, and he can't equip footwear at all. But other than that, he is actually surprisingly decent.
And "Dancing Rhapsody" is awesome. cool.gif

Nakula is the Teni Star, so of course he's a beast. Unlike the past couple, Nakula lives up to being Pesmerga's successor. (Or perhaps predecessor, given the timelines?) I always had a feeling he'd be a great physical fighter, but... for whatever reason, I just never got around to really using him. I think other characters' personalities just caused me to pick them over him, like in the case of Zegai. ^^;

I think I pointed out earlier that Nelis has the slight advantage in physical stats over Bernadette, which may be neat for those who like hybrid characters. Either way, she and Bernadette are similarly nifty characters.

Nick... I don't think I was aware of those S/SS skills. Huh. I'm pretty sure I gave him a chance at one point, but he simply didn't measure up to much of anything. Obviously, just like anyone else, some damage multipliers could make him decent, but I just never thought he was much of any use. But, hey, maybe I'll give him another shot sometime. (When I have a fully-functional copy of the game. sleep.gif)
Pesmerga
Yeah, I was surprised with Nick as well, he has better stats than I thought he would have.

Anyway, some more updates =D.

Woot
Sigs Minock
i used Nakula in the final dungeon... though, i had'em equipped with the Berserk rune (uncontrollable), Power rune (+1.5 att, -50% pdf), and Drain Rune; for a M-range attacker, he often criticalled for 1000+ damage.

Like Belcoot was a lousy Falcon-rune bearer, Yahr was a lousy Raging Dragon bearer- due to his comparatively low attack power. (compared to other short-range fighters)
Oulan (S2's Raging Dragon bearer) was a beast... because of her, it's probably why i liked Nikea (or maybe it was because Nikea has some "super-duper cool" moves...).
Pesmerga
God, my first post is bloody long x'D.

Hmm, I added a top 5 for each category, just for the sake of it. Damn you, Cathari =P.

On that note, as Chalryn had mentioned before, I'll see if I can do some info on the unites as well, to see what unites are strong and convenient and which ones are just utterly useless. I am looking at you, beavers!

Also, I'll have to revise some of my earlier post, the part that I posted months ago.
The reason is that I wasn't thinking the same way back then and thus underestimated/overestimated some characters, or simply didn't had enough information at the time yet. I was writing things down as I went along.
Who knew Bernadette had the highest MAG of the non-mages? Chal probably did =P. Anyway, I need to improve some things, which I will hopefully do in the next few days.

I think it's kind of unfair to just throw the beast characters (who have obviously higher base defense due to lacking armor) in there. So, hey, here's a Top 5 for the human(-oid) characters (according to your guide here), plus the strongest armor available to them. (Excluding accessories, but including unique armor and the Saint's Cloak.)

1. Galleon: 111 + 251 = 362
2. Bergen/Nakula/Zegai: 110 + 251 = 361
3. Isabel: 107 + 251 = 358
4. Belcoot: 106 + 251 = 357
5. Gavaya: 105 + 251 = 356
Pesmerga
Haha, noticed the error. The second one should be Zerase, not Eresh.
I actually agree with you on the animal part, I might change it actually. (been away for the week)
I will stick with base PDF though and not include armour. The top 2 in base PDF will be Nikea with 120 and Jeane with 112, Galleon will probably be third and everything else I'll have to look up, but probably similar to what you got there.

Anyway, thanks and I hope you like the changes I made so far (read Bernadette =P).
