Joypad magazine - the French Edge - has published the first preview of the next Prince of Persia, just announced by Ubisoft.

The game will be coming to PC, PS3 and 360 this year and is being developed by the original Prince of Persia: Sands of Time team at Ubisoft Montreal. It features cel-shaded graphics, and scraps the Sands of Time rewind powers. The gameplay centres on healing a corrupted world in the style of Okami, Shadow of the Colossus or The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Joypad's preview shows striking images of the game's "illustrative" visual style - a subtle and highly detailed take on cel-shading - and the new Prince, a colourful vagabond swathed in scarves. He wouldn't look out of place in a Final Fantasy game, the article's author points out.

Creative director Jean-Christophe Guyot told Joypad that the aim was to create a more fantastical game and "more poetic vision" than the Sands of Time trilogy, with which it shares no connection. "The previous trilogy mixed the Arabian Nights in with historical Persia," he said (in French, so please excuse our rough translation). "We decided we'd prefer to return to the tales of the Thousand and One Nights for something more colourful."

The move caused some consternation with Ubisoft management, he explained, although they never opposed it. "They knew we weren't going to make a second Assassin's Creed," he said. "However, they did raise their eyebrows a bit at the new, stylised artistic direction. They were worried the Americans wouldn't like it. There were many discussions, but they never said no to us."

Guyot said the style was "Zelda-esque, old school, with very contrasting levels". The settings will be more open and organic than in previous games.

The game's plot draws on a Zoroastrian myth: the war between good and evil gods (and twins) Ohrmazd and Ahriman. Ohrmazd wins and imprisons his brother in a box hidden in an oasis. But Ahriman is freed by an unwitting thief centuries later, and remakes the world in his image, corrupting all living beings. It falls to the thief to undo his actions and return colour to the world, and in so doing he turns from robber into the titular Prince.

He heals the land by killing boss guardians, in the style of Shadow of the Colossus or Twilight Princess, and unleashing the power of the light-wells they guard. The land is then transformed in real-time - unlike Okami's cut-scenes - with grass growing and lighting and colour changing dynamically as the Prince moves through the world.

Although combat is still an important part of the game, enemies will be much less numerous and more vicious. The emphasis is on one-on-one swordfighting duels, with a very dynamic camera. It's described as being more Soul Calibur than God of War.

Platforming has been less drastically altered, with the major addition being a spiked glove that the Prince can use to slide along, and jump from, vertical surfaces. The sands of time powers have been removed due to overuse - "the concept has been so used and copied, we had to move on to something else, put it to one side" - although a still-secret "something" will take their place and fulfil some of the same functions.

Structurally, the game will be a mix of open-ended and linear. The Prince is free to explore the world map and take on challenges in whatever order he wants - dynamic settings taking care of the difficulty curve - but each challenge will be a fairly linear assault course, maximising fluidity and acrobatics, and ending in a boss confrontation. The developers are hoping the bosses will have some of the strong personality of Metal Gear Solid's.

As a fresh start for the Prince of Persia series, it all sounds very promising. Look out for more details from the UbiDays event on the 28th and 29th of May.

well i never did play much of the other games but from what i played i remember really enjoying them, hopefully i can enjoy this also when it does come out.
Loomis
Sounds really interesting.... while I liked the previous ones I'm positive that scrapping the old story for something new like this was the right thing to do... interested in seeing how this turns out. smile.gif
Sigs Minock
i'll probably pick it up...
Mushroom
what the #### is this?

Thats my initial reaction, if I'm being hnoest. Love the original trilogy, played it to death - this doesn't look or sound the same at all. I can see that Assassin's creed has kind of repalced what PoP was for them and they didn't want to re-do the same game they'd just done but, Iwas really looknig forward to a sequel in the same vein haha sad.gif I guess I'll never be happy. This has the potential to be great of course, but it just doesn't look or sound like what I look forward to out of PoP. Andmy reaction to that is i'd rather have a different game where they experiment with all this stuff and continue to put out one of my favourite franchises. Its early going yet though, I'll try not set my mind like this until I see the actual game in action.
Noir
Another one... ##### me. This looks like it might be a little better than the others, I'll probably rent it in a few years.

Wow -- Ubisoft wasn't kidding when they said they were going to take the Prince of Persia franchise is new directions. A new article in Edge magazine explains a lot of the concepts and ideas going into the game, so let us know if you decide this is too much of a change, too fast. The game remains in Ubisoft Montreal's hands -- so you're getting the same team that worked on the first trilogy of games. The team will be using the same engine used in Assassin's Creed (which we expected). The difference between this game and Assassin's Creed is the visual style. The team wants to go for "fantasy, but credible" like those found in the new Street Fighter or classic animated film like Princess Mononoke.

This is a new story. The sands of time are gone and so is that cast of characters, including the prince. You're a wanderer lost in the desert. You're thrown into a conflict between two gods: Ormazd and Ahriman, light and darkness respectively. Ahriman has released a plague on mankind or something, so you decide to meddle in this war and stop it. This is where the changes happen.

Past Prince titles launched you into a world that was filled with a room, then enemies, then another room in an incredibly linear, but satisfying, pattern. Say farewell to that. This game is truly non-linear and will allow you to progress the game in whatever order you see fit. Every fight in the game will be a duel -- you won't be slicing around bad guys like an overpowered acrobat anymore unless it's one-on-one. You don't even win a lot of these duels, apparently -- you just make the enemy retreat for a time and then fight them off again until you manage to defeat them. More secrets are being kept, so we'll inform you as soon as they are revealed!

Personally I like the art/graphic style the game has. The fact they’re changing things up doesn’t mean much to me as I haven’t played any of the predecessors (own Sands of Time though for the GC) though, so I can’t really say based off of that whether or not I’ll like the game. It looks interesting though.

Man, when I remember the first prince I played, I can't help but have that strange reminisce feeling. Even back then it had good action and intense situations which also contained it's trilogy. Loved the series and I'm looking forward to it. I don't mind change if they at least keep the basics. Although we shall see...

Ubisoft has been a doing a pretty good job with the marketing of the new Prince of Persia game. It's not easy to build hype by slowly doling out new screens, info and more without revealing too much or over-promising. While that sometimes means that news of the game comes in some strange forms (like speed art) they're well done and provide some good background to the game and world the team is working on.

The above video is of an enemy called the hunter (not from Halo kids) and includes some interesting backstory too. A second speedpaint video embedded after the break is of the Prince's female companion, Elika.

The two videos can be found here: http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/07/12/mo...speedpaintings/

The videos basically show the characters being drawn. Not sure if that really interests anyone, but I thought it was kind of neat to see the speed-drawing stuff...

Meeeh. I still want to see some real proper gameplay footage before I judge, but it just puts me off how in every itnerview etc they're like "this isn't your old PoP!" or "This is as far removed from the last trilogy as you can get!" etc. I LOVED the last trilogy. It made them alot of money. Outside of a few acrobatic similarities in assassin's creed, I see nothing doing what the prince of persia series was doing. So why the need for change? I genuinely was amped for a next gen looking PoP with more puzzlery (XD). Again, I'm trying not to judge because this game could be good, the ideas sound good and it may look good (still want to see gameplay in motion on that one though)....I just really liked prince of persia how it was, and I'll miss the part it played in my gaming.

I did not expect Prince of Persia 4 to go this way. I am impressed, this game is going to be great. I especially like the art direction.

Some E3 news:

QUOTE
During the Ubisoft Press Conference the lead producer of Prince of Persia detailed the support character of Elika. As the magical Princess follows the new Prince throughout the world she also helps him with support moves. Helping the Prince perform longer jumps, double jumps and even in combat where both characters fight in tandem to destroy enemies with stylistic combo moves. Elika proves to take care of herself, thankfully she does not require Ico-style hand holding. Each enemy is designed to be a challenge. Gone are the days of introductory baddies and all that remains are a steady stream of equally difficult adversaries which Ubisoft hopes will make every battle a cinematic and dramatic experience.

Elika also can support the Prince by pulling him from his death. Anytime the player dies a short scene will show Elka pull the Prince out of his fate and back into a safe place in the world. Prince of Persia also sports an open world structure which allows players to choose the path they take, which will also change the story of the game.

Prince of Persia is slated to release this Holiday season.

Agreed I'll take this over the old art style any day.

It's about four minutes long.

The art style is amazing. I'll probably end up buying this game, I just hope it's um...friendly to newcomers to the series, yet provides enough challenge to make it replayable. I played Sands of Time, but gave up at a ridiculously frustrating puzzle. I was younger then and less patient, but...I remember finding it incredibly boring to spend an hour or so on one puzzle.
Mushroom
Can't say any one puzzle took me that long at all in the previous games. The second game has frustrating backtracking though >_<.

Ubisoft's stance with this game is they've taken everything a skilled gamer could do in the old games, and made it so anyone can pick the game up and do that. I'm fine with that as long as they also mean there's now more to learn and do since the game should have at least a decent level of difficulty.
Dragon Brigade
Not having to pay extra for a limited edition game than you would the normal retail one is...unusual. If I were getting this game (don't have anything to play it with), I'd be up for it, personally.

Limited Edition Stuffs

Edit: I should say you don't pay extra if you preo-order it. IGN also has a little blurb on where the comic book will come into play, but that page isn't currently functioning.
Mushroom
Mmmm, its tempting, but I'm not so sure I want this on release. In November there's literally a huge amount of games that I want including (but not limited to) Quantum of Solace, Resistance 2, Smackdown vs. Raw 09, Mirror's Edge, maybe CoD5, Tomb Raider and of course PoP. With that amount, some will be bought and some will have to wait, and its far more likely Resistance will pull me in with their collection's edition than this. I'll really have to see if I can save some cash in October...and even then, Dead Space and Bioshock come straight to mind >_< Add in budget for x-mas pressies, and its going to be a fun but expensive ride to the end of the year.
Dragon Brigade
The release date is set for December 2. Source

I wonder how well this one will do. There are tons of other games coming out in the vicinity of that time frame. >.>.

Joystiq hands-on with PoP

The video they show at the top (didn't watch the second one, though I think it might have been the same) is sort of blurry, but the game-play looks good.

Joystiq hands-on.

This new one is of the final version, and personally I'd be really tempted to buy it...
Pesmerga
I had to test this game for work and my personal experience was quite good with this game.
It had a sort of DMC feel to it, with over the top acrobatic moves and clever one-liners.
When I have a next-gen console (current-gen I should say), I will probably get this game.
